Unit 4 Wildlife protection阅读理解A typical lion tamer(驯兽师) in people's mind is an entertainer holding a whip(鞭) and a chair. The whip gets all of the attention, but it's mostly for show. In reality, it's the chair that does the important work. When a lion tamer holds a chair in front of the lion's face, the lion tries to focus on all four legs of the chair at the same time. With its focus divided, the lion becomes confused and is unsure about what to do next. When faced with so many options, the lion chooses to freeze and wait instead of attacking the man holding the chair. How often do you find yourself in the same position as the lion? How often do you have something you want to achieve(e.g. lose weight, start a business, travel more)-only to end up confused by all of the options in front of you and never make progress? This upsets me to no end because while all the experts are busy debating about which option is best, the people who want to improve their lives are left confused by all of the conflicting information. The end result is that we feel like we can't focus or that we're focused on the wrong things, and so we take less action, make less progress, and stay the same when we could be improving. It doesn't have to be that way. Anytime you find the world waving a chair in your face, remember this: All you need to do is focus on one thing. You just need to get started. Starting before you feel ready is one of the habits of successful people. If you have somewhere you want to go, something you want to accomplish, someone you want to become...take immediate action. If you're clear about where you want to go, the rest of the world will either help you get there or get out of the way.1. Why does the lion tamer use a chair?A. To trick the lion.B. To show off his skills.C. To get ready for a fight.D. To entertain the audience.2. In what sense are people similar to a lion facing a chair?A. They feel puzzled over choices.B. They hold on to the wrong things.C. They find it hard to make changes.D. They have to do something for show.3. What is the author's attitude towards the experts mentioned in Paragraph 3?A. Tolerant.B. Doubtful.C. Respectful.D. Supportive.4. When the world is "waving a chair in your face", you're advised to ________.A. wait for a better chanceB. break your old habitsC. make a quick decisionD. ask for clear guidance正确答案:A A B C精美句子1、善思则能“从无字句处读书”。

leading-edge technology.Low-cost,dependable and small modern cameras are a big help.Cameras placed in hard-to-reach places have taken videos of everything from small desert cats to larger snowloving felines(猫科)in the northern Rocky Mountains. These cameras are important tools to learn new information on wildlife. Some videos help scientists see the effects of climate change. For example, the desert animal javelina and the treeloving coatimundi(长鼻浣熊)have been caught on cameras north of their normal home. This could mean global warming is enlarging their living area northward.Researchers use cameras along with global positioning systems,or GPS.They attach GPS devices(设备)to mule deer and antelope (羚羊)in and around Yellowstone National Park. Then they can record their movements,or migrations(迁移).These cameras can be left in very rural(荒里予的)areas for days, weeks or even months. They can provide information on how many animals are moving over a given period of time.Rural video can show details about animal behavior, such as the calls made by migrating mule deer. Also, some cameras record animal life, showing everything from bison in Saskatchewan,Canada,to the underwater weed forest off California ' s Channel Islands. However, rural cameras have their problems too.Animals such as wolverines and bears sometimes attack them.Scientists do not know if the attacks are the results of anger or interest. Also, the devices have become popular tools to help hunters look for animals. Some people argue that it is unfair to use the cameras that way.Even with such problems, rural cameras are clearly an important scientific tool in researching wild animals.1.Which of the following helps scientists know about climate change?A.How active animals are.B.Where animals go.C.What animals This could end the worries of many parents fearful for their children’s safety on the roads.Until now the local government have been prepared to provide bus services for children living more than three miles from their school, or sometimes less if special reasons existed. Now it has been decided that if a group of parents ask for help in organizing transport they will be prepared to go ahead, as long as the arrangement will not lose money and children taking part will be attending their nearest school. The new plan is to be fired out this term for children living at Milton who attend Impington School. The children live just within the three-mile limit andthe local government said in the past that they would not undertake to provide free transport to the school. But now they have agreed to offer a sum of money for a bus service from Milton to Impington School and back, a plan which has the support of the school’s headmaster. Between 50 and 60 parents have said they would like their children to take part. Final calculations have still to be carried out, but a government official has said the cost to parents should be less than £20 a term. They have been able to arrange the service at a low cost because there is already an agreement with the bus pany for a bus to take children who live further away to Impington. The same bus would now just make one more journey to pick up the Milton children. The official said they would get in touch with other groups of parents who in the past had asked if transport could be provided for their children, to see if they would like to take part in the new plan.50. What is the aim of the plan?A. To prevent the students’ road accident.B. To relieve the traffic pressure.C. To save time for the parents and students.D. To help the parents save money51. How can the local government arrange the new bus service at a low cost?A. By letting the bus run in the morning only.B. By limiting the number of the students.C. By getting the support from the headmaster.D. By linking(连接) the new bus service with the existing one.52. Which of the following is possible if the plan is carried out?A. The bus pany will make much more money.B. The children can choose whatever school they like.C. The parents can get rid of their worries.D. The students in Impington school can have free bus rides.53. This passage is most probably ______.A. a personal letterB. an advertisementC. a headmaster’s reportD. a newspaper articleCGrown-ups know that people and objects are solid. At the movies, we know that if we reach out to touch Tom Cruise, all we will feel is air. But does a baby have this understanding? To see whether babies know objects are solid, T.Bower designed a method for projecting an optical illusion(视觉影像)of a hanging ball. His plan was to first give babies a real ball, one they could reach out and touch, and then to show them the illusion. If they knew that objects are solid, and they show surprise in theirfaces and reach out for the illusion and found empty air, they could be expected movements. All the 16-to 24-week-old babies tested were surprised when they reached for the illusion and found that the ball was not there.Grown-ups also have a sense of object permanence. We know that if we put a box in a room and lock the door, the box will still be there when we e back. But does a baby realize that a ball that rolls under a chair does not disappear or go to never-never land?Experiments done by bower suggest that babies develop a sense of object permanence when they are about 18 weeks old. In his experiments, Bower used a toy train that went behind a screen. When 16-week-old and 22-week-old babies watched the toy train disappear behind the left side of the screen, they looked to the right, expecting it to reappear. If the experimenter took the train off the table and lifted the screen, all the babies seemed surprised not to see the train. This seems to show that all the babies had a sense of object permanence. But the second part of the experiment showed that this was not really the case. The researcher substituted(替换) a ball for the train when it went behind the screen. The 22-week-old babies seemed surprised and looked back to the left side for the train. But 16-week-old babies did not seem to notice the switch(更换). Thus, the 16-week-old babies seemed to have a sense of “something permanence,” while the22-week-old babies had a sense of object permanence related to a particular object.54. The passage is mainly about ______.A. babies’ sense of sightB. effects of experiments on babiesC. babies’understanding of objectsD. different tests on babies’feelings55. In Paragraph 3, “object permanence”means that when out of sight, an object ______.A. still existsB. keeps its shapeC. still stays solidD. is beyond reach56. What did Bower use in his experiment?A. A chairB. A screenC. A filmD. A box57. Which of the following statements is true?A. The babies didn’t have a sense of direction.B. The older babies preferred toy trains to ballsC. The younger babies liked looking for missing objects.D. The babies couldn’t tell a ball from its optical illusion.IV. 短文改错I was only about six that he held his hand58. _________________out to me. Satellite (卫星) pictures show large wooded areas have been cleared from central Mexico. The forests are the winter home for millions of monarch butterflies (黑脉金斑蝶). The butterflies travel there each year to reproduce (繁殖).Each year, more than two hundred thousand people travel to Mexico to see the butterflies. From November to March, millions of butterflies can be seen in the trees and the sky. Mexican officials hope that by protecting the forests, they can increase the number of visitors. These satellite pictures show the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve. About four hundred forty-five hectares (公顷) have been cleared illegally (非法地) since 2004. When the world is "waving a chair in your face", you're advised to ________.A. wait for a better chanceB. break your old habitsC. make a quick decisionD. ask for clear guidance 正确答案:A A B C。

Unit 4 Wildlife protection五年高考练阅读理解A(2021全国甲,B,)Port Lympne Reserve, which runs a breeding(繁育)programme, has welcomed the arrival of a rare black rhino calf(犀牛幼崽). When the tiny creature arrived on January 31, she became the 40th black rhino to be born at the reserve. And officials at Port Lympne were delighted with the new arrival, especially as black rhinos are known for being difficult to breed in captivity(圈养).Paul Beer, hea d of rhino section at Port Lympne, said:“Obviously we're all absolutely delighted to welcome another calf to our black rhino family. She's healthy, strong and already eager to play and explore. Her mother, Solio, is a first-time mum and she is doing a fantastic job. It's still a little too cold for them to go out into the open, but as soon as the weather warms up, I have no doubt that the little one will be out and about exploring and playing every day.”The adorable female calf is the second black rhino born this year at the reserve, but it is too early to tell if the calves will make good candidates to be returned to protected areas of the wild. The first rhino to be born at Port Lympne arrived on January 5 to first-time mother Kisima and weighed about 32kg. His mother, grandmother and great grandmother were all born at the reserve and still live there.According to the World Wildlife Fund, the global black rhino population has dropped as low as 5500, giving the rhinos a “critically endangered” status.词汇积累1.reserve n.保护区vt.预留,预定2.obviously adv.明显地3.fantanstic adj.极好的4.adorable adj.可爱的,讨人喜欢的5.candidate n.候选人6.critically endangered极度濒危的1.Which of the following best describes the breeding programme?A.Costly.B.Controversial.C.Ambitious.D.Successful.2.What does Paul Beer say about the new-born rhino?A.She loves staying with her mother.B.She dislikes outdoor activities.C.She is in good condition.D.She is sensitive to heat.3.What similar experience do Solio and Kisima have?A.They had their first born in January.B.They enjoyed exploring new places.C.They lived with their grandmothers.D.They were brought to the reserve young.4.What can be inferred about Port Lympne Reserve?A.The rhino section will be open to the public.B.It aims to control the number of the animals.C.It will continue to work with the World Wildlife Fund.D.Some of its rhinos may be sent to the protected wild areas.B(2020全国Ⅱ,C,)When you were trying to figure out what to buy for the environmentalist on your holiday list, fur probably didn't cross your mind. But some ecologists and fashion(时装)enthusiasts are trying to bring back the market for fur made from nutria(海狸鼠).Unusual fashion shows in New Orleans and Brooklyn have showcased nutria fur mad e into clothes in different styles. “It sounds crazy to talk about guilt-free fur—unless you understand that the nutria are destroying vast wetlands every year,”says Cree McCree, project director of Righteous Fur.Scientists in Louisiana were so concerned that they decided to pay hunters $5 a tail. Some of the fur ends up in the fashion shows like the one in Brooklyn last month.Nutria were brought there from Argentina by fur farmers and let go into the wild. “The ecosystem down there can't handle this non-native species(物种). It's destroying the environment. It's them or us,”says Michael Massimi, an expert in this field. The fur trade kept nutria in check for decades, but when the market for nutria collapsed in the late 1980s, the cat-sized animals multiplied like crazy.Biologist Edmond Mouton runs the nutria control program for Louisiana. He says it's not easy to convince people that nutria fur is green, but he has no doubt about it. Hunters bring in more than 300,000 nutria tails a year, so part of Mouton's job these days is trying to promote fur. Then there's Righteous Fur and its unusual fashions. Model Paige Morgan says, “To give people a guilt-free option that they can wear without someone throwing paint on them—I think that's going to be a massive thing, at least here in New York.”Designer Jennifer Anderson admits it took her a while to come around to the opinion that using nutria fur for her creations is morally acceptable. She's trying to come up with a label to attach to nutria fashions to show it is eco-friendly. 5.What is the purpose of the fashion shows in New Orleans and Brooklyn?A.To promote guilt-free fur.B.To expand the fashion market.C.To introduce a new brand.D.To celebrate a winter holiday.6.Why are scientists concerned about nutria?A.Nutria damage the ecosystem seriously.B.Nutria are an endangered species.C.Nutria hurt local cat-sized animals.D.Nutria are illegally hunted.7.What does the underlined word “collapsed” in paragraph 5 probably mean?A.Boomed.B.Became mature.C.Remained stable.D.Crashed.8.What can we infer about wearing fur in New York according to Morgan?A.It's formal.B.It's risky.C.It's harmful.D.It's traditional.C(2019天津,C,)How does an ecosystem(生态系统) work? What makes the populations of different species the way they are? Why are there so many flies and so few wolves? To find an answer, scientists have built mathematical models of food webs, noting who eats whom and how much each one eats. With such models, scientists have found out some key principles operating in food webs. Most food webs, for instance, consist of many weak links rather than a few strong ones. When a predator(掠食动物) always eats huge numbers of a single prey(猎物), the two species are strongly linked; when a predator lives on various species, they are weakly linked. Food webs may be dominated by many weak links because that arrangement is more stable over the long term. If a predator can eat several species, it can survive the extinction(灭绝)of one of them. And if a predator can move on to another species that is easier to find when a prey species becomes rare, the switch allows the original prey to recover. The weak links may thus keep species from driving one another to extinction.Mathematical models have also revealed that food webs may be unstable, where small changes of top predators can lead to big effects throughout entire ecosystems. In the 1960s, scientists proposed that predators at the top of a food web had a surprising amount of control over the size of populations of other species—including species they did not directly attack. And unplanned human activities have proved the idea of top-down control by top predators to be true. In the ocean, we fished for top predators such as cod on an industrial scale, while on land, we killed off large predators such as wolves. These actions have greatly affected the ecological balance.Scientists have built an early-warning system based on mathematical models. Ideally, the system would tell us when to adapt human activities that are pushing an ecosystem toward a breakdown or would even allow us to pull an ecosystem back from the borderline. That's why AWF scientists are studying elephant behavior, protecting habitats and finding ways for humans to live peacefully with elephants in Africa.Years ago, overhunting and the ivory trade were the biggest threats to elephants' survival. Luckily, ivory bans (禁令), hunting rules and protected areas protect elephants from these dangers today. The 21st century brings a different challenge to elephant conservation —landuse. Elephants walk across borders and outside parks and other protected areas. So they often destroy crops, causing conflicts (冲突) between local farmers and these big animals.Successful conservation strategies (策略) must allowelephants to walk freely in their natural habitats while reducing conflicts between elephants and local people.AWF researchers are searching for a way to give both elephants and people the space they need. Unit 4 Wildlife ProtectionⅠ.阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)AAn incredible dog has mastered more than just the doggy paddle (狗刨式游泳)—the golden brown pet helps disabled children learn how to surf. Ricochet's owner Judy Fridono said, “I was working with her at balance and coordination. Her balance is so good that she can help to stabilize the board for the kids. And it makes them feel good to know that Ricochet is there with them, keeping them company. ”Since becoming an expert, twoyearold Ricochet helps the disabled children build up the confidence to get on the board themselves. Dressed in a yellow jacket, Ricochet helps to counterbalance the board and acts as a reassuring presence.Ms. Fridono knows what an impact her beloved dog can have. She herself was severely disabled since her teens. Having Ricochet around lifts her spirits, and inspires her to conquer her pain to get on the board. “Ricochet has taught me to focus on what I can do, rather than what I can't,” she said. One of those who have benefited from Ricochet's skills is sixyearold Ian McFarland. In 2008 a car crash left him with brain damage. Although he had loved surfing before the accident, he was too nervous to go back into the water. His fear turned to excitement, when he was told he could try a tandem (双人) surf session with Ricochet. Their session was a success and by the end of it, Ian was smiling from ear to ear. As well as providing treatments, Ricochet also raised £5,000 to help continue Ian's recovery.Over the last 10 months, Ricochet's excellent performances on the sea have raised more than £30,000 for a number of charity causes (慈善事业).【语篇解读】本文介绍了一只会帮助残障孩子冲浪的小狗。
