（辜鸿铭）Confucius said to his disciples: “Seck for wisdom; hold fast to godliness; live a normal life; and enjoy the pleasures derived from the pursuit of the polite arts.”
“学术”义
4.15子曰：“参乎！吾道一以贯之。

”曾子曰：“唯。

”子出，门人问曰：“何谓也？”曾子曰：“夫子之道，忠恕而已矣。

”
（辜鸿铭）Confucius remarked to a disciple, “In all my life and teaching there is one underlying connected principle.”“Even so,” answered th e disciple.
Afterwards, when Confucius had left, other disciples asked the disciple who was above spoken to, “what did the master mean by what he said just now?”“The principle in the master’s life and teaching,” answered the disciple, “is comprised in the two words: conscientious and charity.”

If, on the other hand, in government you encouraging education and good manners the people will have a sense of shame for wrong-doing and, moreover, will emulate what is good.”

5.21 子曰：“宁武子，邦有道，则知；邦无道，则愚。

其知可及也，其愚不可及也。

”（辜鸿铭）Confucius remarked of a public chara cter of the time, saying “He was a man when there was order and justice in the government of the country, acted as a man of great understanding. But when there was no order and justice in the government of the country, he acted as if he was a man of no understanding, but it is not easy to imitate in the way he showed how to act as a man of no understanding.
（2）“有道德学问的人，好人”义
1.14 子曰：“君子食无求饱，居无求安，敏于事而慎于言，就有道而正焉，可谓好学也已。

”
（辜鸿铭）Confucius remarked, “A wise and good man, in matters of food, should never seek to indulge his appetite; in lodging, he should not be too solicitous of comfort. He should be diligent in business and careful in speech. He should seek for the company of men of virtue and learning,
in order to profit by their lessons and example. In this way he may become a man of real culture.”“无道”
（1）“政治黑暗”义。

3.24 仪封人请见，曰：“君子之至于斯也，吾未尝不得见也。

”从者见之。

出曰：“二三子何患于丧乎？天下之无道也久矣，天将以夫子为木铎。

”
（辜鸿铭）An officer in command of a certain Pass on the frontier where Confucius on his travels was passing, asked for the permission t o be presented to him, saying, “Whenever a wise man passes this way, I have always had the honor to wait upon him.” Confucius’s disciples accordingly presented him.
When the officer came out of the interview he said to the disciples, “Gentlemen, why should you be concerned at your present want of official position! The world has long been without the order and justice of good government; now God is going to make use of your Teacher as a tocsin to awaken the world.”

14.19 子言卫灵公之无道也
（辜鸿铭）Confucius on one occasion was commenting on the scandalous life of the prince of a certain State.
