For years, my time spent in the shower could have got me a mention in Guinness World Records as the shortest time taken to bathe. I hurried up during this process.
One day, however, while at a party, I heard an artist friend telling everybody that his idea came while he was having a shower. “What about you?” he asked, “Don’t you get your creative thoughts from the same place?”
“I’m in and out in a hurry,” I told him proudly. “I have no time to waste!”
“What a pity,” he said. “That’s the place where you need to slow down; plenty of great thoughts come from the re!” I tried it out. I slowed down the whole process, started enjoying the warm water, taking a little longer to soap myself and even spending more time just enjoying the process, and realized how much I had missed in hurrying up all these years.
A woman told me how much stress her friend was suffering from and how she sought to convince her that she needed to find ways to relax. She gave her a videotape on stress management and relaxation techniques, and encouraged her to watch it right away. Fifteen minut es later, her friend handed back the tape. “It was good,” she said,” but I don’t need it.”
“But it’s a 70 - minute video,” the woman replied, “You couldn’t have watched the whole thing.”
“Yes, I did,” her friend said. “I put it in fast - forward!”
A major social problem of the 21st century is Hurry Sickness. We hurry through work. We swallow fast food. We complain that we don’t have enough time. We race through the days and weeks until one day we look back in amazement and comment, “My god, how the years fl ew by!” Then we realize the heavy price we have paid for traveling fast.
Symptoms of Hurry Sickness include stress and anxiety, bad relationships,
lowered work performance and even disease. Some people don’t survive it. What’s the cure? Slow down, for life is so short and precious that we must live it well. 24.What was the advantage of taking a shower in the eyes of the artist friend?
A. Time was saved.
B. Nothing was missed.
C. Great ideas flew away.
D. Creative thoughts came.
25.What was th e trouble with the woman’s friend?
A. She felt stressed.
B. She found the tape useless.
C. She found no way to relax.
D. She watched the tape too fast.
26.What are the major trouble people face in the 21st century in the writer’s eyes?
A. People run fast to work.
B. Everything is done in a hurry.
C. People don’t have enough time.
D. Time flies without being noticed. 27.How can the problem be settled?
A. By pacing down.
B. By learning to survive.
C. By developing friendship.
D. By performing good work.

The Web as a Way of Life
If you ask people today why they use mobile phones to communicate with their friends or why they turn to TV for entertainment they will look at you as if you are crazy. These things have become such an integral part of life that they are no longer noticed, let alone remarked on.
In the same way, within a decade no one will notice the web. it will be just there. It will be a way of life. People will use it for shopping, education, entertainment and communication. They will invent new uses for it.
A change like this is generational. Old people have to learn something about new things outside their everyday life, while kids who grow up with a new technology simply treat it as given.
In the future, everyone’s business card will have an email address. Every lawyer, every doctor and every business from large- to- small will be connected. On the other hand, the variety of activities on the web will be broadening at an amazing rate. You can find all kinds of interesting materials on the web.
Many sites will have a huge traffic flow. People will trade the time they now spend reading the paper or watching TV for time spent surfing the web. Americans, particularly young Americans, will spend less time in front of the TV, and more on the web.
We usually overestimate(估计过高) what we can do in two years and underestimate what we can do in ten. The web will be as much a way of life as the car by 2008 and probably before.
28.The web will be an integral part of life because ________.
A. we will use it to do lots of things
B. it will replace the TV
C. we won’t notice it is there
D. it will help us to lead better lives
29.In the future ________.
A. all business cards will have email addresses
B. doctors and lawyers will not use the web
C. traffic will be controlled on the web
D. all business will be done on the web
30.According to the last paragraph it can be most probably inferred that ________.
A. we have no idea how the web will develop
B. there will soon be more computers than cars
C. we are very good at predicting the future
D. the development of the web will be faster than we expect
31.The writer is ________ about the development of web.
A. unsure
B. fearful
C. confident
D. crazy
D
I told my friend Graham that I often cycle two miles from my house to the town centre
but unfortunately there is a big hill on the route. He replied, "You mean fortunately." He
explained that I should be glad of the extra exercise that the hill provided.
My attitude to the hill has now changed. I used to complain as I approached it but now
I tell myself the following. This hill will exercise my heart and lungs. It will help me to lose
weight and get fit. It will mean that I live longer. This hill is my friend. Finally I comfort
myself with the thought of all those silly people who pay money to go to a gym and sit on
stationery exercise bicycles when I can get the same value for free. I have a smile of
satisfaction as I reach the top of the hill.
Problems are there to be faced and overcome. We cannot achieve anything with an
easy life. Helen Keller was the first deaf and blind person to gain a university degree. Her
activism and writing proved inspirational. She wrote, "Character cannot be developed in
ease. Only through experiences of suffering can the soul be strengthened, vision cleared,
ambition inspired and success achieved."
One of the main determinants of success in life is our attitude towards adversity. From
time to time we all face hardships, problems, accidents and difficulties. Some are of our
making but many are no fault of our own. While we cannot choose the adversity, we can
choose our attitude towards it.
Douglas Bader was 21 when in 1931 he had both legs cut off following a flying accident. He was determined to fly again and went on to become one of the leading flying
aviators in the Battle of Britain with 22 aerial victories over the Germans . He was an
inspiration to others during the war. He said, "Don't listen to anyone who tells you that you
can't do this or that. That's nonsense. Make up your mind, you'll never use crutches or a
stick, and then have a go at everything. Go to school, and join in all the games you can. Go
anywhere you want to. But never, never let them persuade you that things are too difficult
or impossible."
The biographies of great people are full of examples of how they took steps to overcome the difficulties they faced. The common thread is that they did not become depressed. They chose their attitude. They chose to be positive. They took on the challenge.
They won. Nevertheless, there is still the problem of how you change your attitude towards
adversity.
32. Which of the following is true according to the author of the passage?
A. Those who want to achieve success can't expect to live an easy life.
B. Climbing hills on bicycles is the best way to take exercise.
C. Going to a gym is greatly beneficial to people's health.
D. People's attitude to hardships is the only factor of their success.
33. By quoting what Douglas Bader said, the author intends to tell us “____________”
A. Failure is the mother of success.
B. A bad workman quarrels with his tools.
C. Nothing is difficult to the man who will try.
D. If you risk nothing, you will have nothing.
34. Following this passage, the author will further talk about _________ .
A. how his friend helped him to change his attitude towards the challenge he faced
B. why it is important to keep optimistic in face of trouble
C. what steps to take to change your attitude towards the difficulty you face
D. what great people have in common
35. Which of the following can best function as the title of the passage?
A. Different attitudes towards misfortune
B. Face difficulties with a smile
C. Nothing is impossible
D. Life is full of adversity
