AWhen Charles Stratton was five, he stopped growing. His mother took him to see the famous showman, P.T.Barnum.Mr.Barnum thought a small person would be the perfect addition to his show.He hired Charles' parents along with him, and they traveled the world together. He gave the two-foot-tall Charles a name, General Tom Thumb. He taught Tom how to sing, dance, act and tell jokes. When he felt Tom was ready to perform on stage, he made up ads.To stir up great interest, he said that Tom was eleven years old and had come from England.During the show, Tom fought battles pretendedly with tall people. He also danced upon a wooden plate held by a person who was eight feet tall.Tom's act was very popular and brought in a lot of money.By the time Tom was an adult, he had grown very rich.He had become a billionaire at the age of twenty five.Fortunately for Tom, Mr.Barnum added more little people to his show, and Tom became lucky in love as well. One of the little people was Lavinia Warren, a schoolteacher.Tom was able to win her love, and they married. The ceremony and reception were the talk of the town. They were attended by many rich and famous people and by about 2000 guests.Crowds filled the streets of New York to have a look at their tiny wedding marriage. The couple even met with President Abraham Lincoln on their honeymoon just before going to live in Tom's house in Connecticut.Their wedding, which took place during the Civil War, provided a welcome escape from the sad problems of war.Not willing to let this bit of sunshine fade, communities throughout the country sponsored "Tom Thumb" weddings. In these weddings, small boys and girls, all dressed up, went through marriage ceremony for fun.1.The underlined words "talk of the town" means________.A.it was in the newspaperB.it was the most popular topicC.people spread bad rumors about itD.it was discussed in a city meeting2.What does the author think about Tom's wedding?A.Tom and Lavinia were stupid.B.People gave it too much of their attention.C.It was funny and ridiculous.D.It helped people cheer up in a dark time.3.What is the main idea of the last paragraph?A.Weddings always make people feel full of sunshine.B.People are always disappointed during war time.C.Entertainment can serve an important purpose.D.People should be married when they are small children.2.BDeath is natural, but do you have any idea of the process of dying? Modern scientists divide the process of dying into two phases --- clinical or temporary death and biological death.Clinical death occurs when the vital organs, such as the heart or lungs, have ceased to function, but have not suffered permanent damage. The organism can still be revived(复活).Biological death occurs when changes in the organism lead to the “breaking up” of vital cells and tissues.Death is then unchangeable and final.Scientists have been seeking a way to prolong the period of clinical death so that the organism can remain alive before biological death occurs. The best method developed so far involves cooling of the organism, combined with narcotic sleep.By slowing down the body’s metabolism(陈代谢), cooling delays the processes leading to biological death. To illustrate how this works, scientists performed an experiment on a six-year-old female monkey called Keta. The scientist put Keta to sleep with a narcotic. Then they surrounded her body with ice-bags and began checking her body temperature. When it had dropped to 28 degrees the scientists began draining blood from an artery. The monkey’s blood pressure decreased and an hour later both the heart and breathing stopped: clinical death set in.For twenty minutes Keta remained in this state. Her temperature dropped to 22 degrees. At this point the scientists pumped blood into an artery in the direction of the heart and started artificial breathing. After two minutes Keta’s heart became active once more. After fifteen minutes, spontaneous(自发的)breathing began, and after four hours Keta opened her eyes and lifted her head. After six hours, when the scientists tried to give her a penicillin injection, Keta seized the syringe and ran with it around the room. Her behavior differed little from that of a healthy animal.1.For a person who suffers from the clinical death, _________.A.his most important organs are damaged.B.he still has the possibility of getting back to life.C.he can not avoid final death.D.he is still very much alive2.Scientists try to make the time of clinical death longer in order to __________.A.slow down the body’s metabolism.B.bring vital cells and tissues back to active life.C.cool the organism.D.delay the coming of biological death.3. How did the scientists put Keta into clinical death?A.By putting her to sleep, lowering her temperature and draining her blood.B.By surrounding her body with ice-bags and draining her blood.C.By lowing her blood pressure and stopping her heart from beating.D.By draining her blood, lowering her blood pressure and stopping her breathing.4. All of the following indicate that the monkey has almost restored to her original physical state except the fact that__________.A.her heart beat again.B.she regained her normal breath.C.she rejected a penicillin injection.D.she acted as lively as a healthy monkey.3.C“People are ruder today because they are rushed and more ‘time poor’ than ever before,” says Patsy Rowe, “ Manners have fallen off the radar(雷达).” Due to our strong attraction to electronic equipment it is a wonder that more people don’t wake up each morning and greet the singing birds with complaining about the noise. Here are some examples of rudeness. Some people prefer to do almost everything over the Internet. To them, dealing with an actual human is like an evolutionary step backward. It feels very slow because humans don’t work at 4G speeds. When you have dinner with friends, you will often notice someone paying more attention to his mobile phone. We have programmed ourselves to think that every new message brings life-changing news, so taking calls and checking our texts are more important than talking to the people we are with. What is worse, some people even tend to send anonymous(匿名的)rude messages by email. However, rudeness is never acceptable.Don’t assume it is OK to be rude if the person you’re in touch with won’t recognize you.If you have something awful to say, have the courage to face the person and say it, write a letter or email and sign it, or forget it.Upsetting people with unsigned messages is cruel and disgusting. We shouldn’t blame technology for our shortcomings.Technology is here to help us, but we should not allow it to take over our lives. An important step is acknowledging our shortcomings.People spend a lot oftime pointing out bad manners but it would be even more helpful if we’dpublicly acknowledge good manners when we see them.1.What can be inferred from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 1?A.People can tell good from bad behavior.B.Radar is able to observe human behavior.C.People care little about their behavior.D.Radar can be used to predict human behavior.2.Some people are less willing to deal with humans because__________.A.they are becoming less patientB.they are growing too independentC.they have to handle many important messagesD.they have to follow an evolutionary step backward.3.The author thinks sending unsigned awful messages is ___________.A.RidiculousB.disgustingC.acceptableD.reasonable4.What can we learn from the last paragraph?A.We should applaud good behavior.B.Technology can never be blamedC.We should keep pointing out mistakes.D.Technology will take over lives one day.4.DI have two sons. They are as different as night and day.My youngest is sweet, loveable, easy-going, and finds joy in everything. My oldest we’ve nicknamed the “Evil Genius” is ambitious, self-confident, and suffers no fools.Whenever we mentioned Santa my husband and I were rewarded with major eye rolling and deep sighs from my oldest. At first we both tried to ignore it.We both knew that our eldest had figured out the big secret. But I’d be damned(指责) if he was going to ruin it for his six-year-old brother who had plenty of Santa-loving years ahead of him.I looked at my husband in the eye and said, “I’ll handle this.” to which he responded “Okay just be careful because I’m not sure he knows - he might just be acting like it.” But I knew. And I had it in my mind that he was about to break his younger brothers spirit and break the news to him.I was afraid he was going to take the Christmas spirit away from my sweet innocent youngest and stamp all over it.I had to protect him.I needed to control this now before it got out of control.I rushed into the play room where my oldest was playing alone.I looked him dead in the eyes and said: “Wellyou know Santa isn’t real, right?” And as I stared at my eight-year-old son for what seemed like a long time of silence, his eyes started to fill with tears. And a tear dropped down his cheek when he screamed out, “He’s not?”“Um well it’s not that he’s not real (shut up you idiot- stop saying he’s not real), but he doesn’t really make and deliver all the toys.Dad and I get some of them for you.So he’s real. He’s just got a little help from us.”The Evil Genius wasn’t buying it.He just sat there looking at me with an expression of doubt. You know when you make a terrible mistake but you can’t stop yourself from making it worse? That was me because I just had to know.I had to know why he had seemed to be over Santa. So I asked him why he rolled his eyes and sighed every time his father and I mentioned Santa, to which he replied that kids at school had been saying Santa wasn't real but that he still thought he was.1.What’s the best title for the passage?A.Two different sonsB.Santa secret given awayC.Protecting one, ruining the otherD.Making a mistake worse2.What did the writer conclude when “Evil Genius” rolled his eyes and sighed?A.“Evil Genius” had discovered Santa was not real.B.“Evil Genius” had broken the secret to his younger brother.C.“Evil Genius” had passed his Santa-loving years.D.“Evil Genius” had been influenced by his classmates.3.What does the underlined sentence mean in the passage?A.“Evil Genius” refused to buy toys.B.“Evil Genius” didn’t believe his mother’s words.C.“Evil Genius” wanted to keep silent.D.“Evil Genius” would not give away the secret.4.What lesson can we learn from the story?A.Lies can never change facts.B.Honesty is the best policy.C.No one is perfect.D.We should think twice before we act.二、信息匹配(共1小题)5.根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,有两项为多余选项。

It just shows how badly she wanted off the swimming team.”“Wanted off the swimming team?” said Papa. “She never said anything about that to me.”“Of course she didn’t,” said Mama. “She was afraid you’d blow your top. You already had her getting a swimming scholarship to college and winning gold medals at the Olympics. Can you imagine how much pressure she must have felt? For her, being on the team couldn’t have been much fun.”“Oh, my gosh!” Papa said, clapping a hand to his forehead. “I’ve been so stupid! I just thought she’d want to be a champion swimmer because she’s so good at it.”“It’s like anything else, dear,” said Mama. “No matter how good at it you are, if it stops bei ng fun, you won’t want to do it anymore.”Papa put his head in his hands.“She must be really mad at me,” he mumbled. “Maybe I should say sorry to her.”Sister’s footsteps could be heard on the stairs. She came into the kitchen and looked hopefully up at her parents.“Honey,” said Mama with a smile, “your papa and I have decided that there’s no reason for you to be on the swimming team if you don’t want to.”Sister’s face lit up like a Christmas tree. “Yippee!” she cried.“And,” added Papa, “there’s no need for any more drills. I’m sure you’ll bring your grades back up all by yourself.”Sister ran to Papa and jumped into his arms. She gave him a big hug. “I’m going to go play cards with Lizzy!” she said. “See you later!”From the kitchen window, Mama and Papa watched their daughter run down the sunny road toward Lizzy’s house.“It’s good to see her happy again,” said Mama.“It sure is,” Papa agreed. “As for the swimming team, there’s always next year.”“If?” Mama prompted him.“Oh, right,” said Papa. “If she wants to.”Mama smiled. “At least you’re learning, dear,” she said. Health Is Better Than WealthC. Better Late Than NeverD. Something Is Better Than NothingWhat's the most important thing in life?People's answers vary greatly. For British scientist Robert Edwards, the answer is having a child. "Nothing is more special than a child," he told the BBC. Edwards, the inventor of the In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) technology—more commonly known as "test-tube (试管) baby" technology—passed away on April 10, 2013 at the age of 87."Edwards changed the lives of millions of ordinary people who now rejoice (高兴) in the gift of their own child," said Peter Braude, a professor at King's College London. "He leaves the world a much better place."Edwards started his experiments as early as the 1950s, when he had just finished his PhD in genetics. At that time, much of the public viewed test-tube babies as "scary", according to Mark Sauer, a professor at Columbia University, US. Edwards and his colleague Patrick Steptoe faced opposition from churches, governments and media, not to mention attacks from many of their fellow scientists. "People said that we should not play God and we should not interfere with nature," Edwards once told Times. He said that he felt "quite alone" at the time."But Edwards was a fighter, and he believed in what he was doing," said Sauer. Without support from the government, the two struggled to raise funds to carry on. And in 1968 they finally developed a method to successfully fertilize human eggs outside the body. The first test-tube baby was born on July 25, 1978. Her name was Is Louise Brown. Despite people's safety concerns, Brown was just as healthy as other children. "IVF had moved from vision to reality and a new era in medicine had begun," BBC commented.Ever since then, public opinion has evolved considerably. Couples who were unable to have babies began thronging (拥向) to Edwards' clinic. Nowadays, Reuters reports, some 4.3 million other "test-tube" children exist. Edwards received a Nobel Prize in 2010 and was knighted (封为爵士) by Queen Elizabeth in the following year. Before his death, Edwards was still in touch with Louise. "He is like a grand dad to me," she said in an interview with the Daily Mail.He is a granddad to millions, in fact.8.What’s the article mainly about?A. The first test-tube baby.B. A new era in medicine.C. The inventor of IVF technology.D. The changes IVF technology has brought.9. The writer quoted Peter Braude to ________.A. show how difficult it was for Edwards to do his workB. describe what kind of person Edwards wasC. explain why he is loved by all childrenD. comment on his achievement10.The underlined word "opposition" in Paragraph 6 is closest in meaning to "________"A. attackB. supportC. testD. influence 11.What is the correct order of events in Edwards' life?a. He received a Nobel Prize.b. He struggled to raise funds.c. The first test-tube baby was born.d. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II.e. He succeeded in fertilizing human eggs outside body.f. He started his experiments on IVF technology.A. f-e-b-c-a- dB. f-b-e-c-d-aC. f-b-e-c-a-dD. f-e-d-a-c-bRobots make me nervous—especially the ones which seem to think for themselves.I was embarrassed to admit this till I heard that Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, felt the same way.Gates said in an interview with the social networking and news website Reddit: “I am in the camp that is concerned about super intelligence. First the machines will do a lot of jobs for us and not be super intelligent. That should be positive if we manage well. A few decades after that though the intelligence is strong enough to be a concern.”Well, maybe I don’t have to worry about my computer and kitchen equipment yet. After I use them I can always pull the plug. But in the future, machines might find a way to prevent us from switching them off. Th ere’s a terrible thought! Maybe the problem with computers too clever for us is not that they are evil like some we’ve seen in sci-fi movies. What could put us in danger is that they might be too efficient. That’s what philosopher Nick Bostrom from Oxford University believes. He says that machines are indifferent (漠然) to humans and in pursuit of their own goals, the destruction of people might be just additional damage. Bostrom gives us an example: A machine which might have as its only goal to produce as many paperclips as possible might look at human bodies as extra material for paperclips and go after you. Because it is, well, a machine, it would not take pity on you. It’s a good thing that American writer Isaac Asimov thought about how far robots can go and left us his three rules of robotics. They state that a robot may not hurt a human being or allow the human being to come to harm.I’m glad my machines at home are “dumb”. All my cleaner wants to take over is the carpet in my living room. Let’s hope they don’t create an appliance which wants to take over the world!12.The author quoted Bill Gates’ words in Paragraph 2 in order to make thetext ________.A. better-knownB. more persuasiveC. better-organizedD. more interesting13.An intelligent paperclip machine would harm us because ________.A. it is much cleverer than usB. it would take over the worldC. it would see us just as materialD. it has the strong feeling of destroying us14.How does the author feel about Isaac Asimov’s rules of robotics?A. We lived on a farm and, in the winter especially, we were quite cut off from the outside world. As soon as I left school, I packed my bags and moved to the capital. However, I soon discovered that city life has its problems too.One big disadvantage is money---it costs so much to go out, not to mention basics like food and housing. Another disadvantage is pollution.I suffer from asthma(哮喘), and at times the air is so bad that I am afraid to go outside. Then there is the problem of travelling round. Although I have a car, I seldom use it because of the traffic jams. Onechoice is to go by bicycle, but that can be quite dangerous.Of course there are advantages. First, there is so much to do in the city, whatever your tastes in culture or entertainment. Besides, there are wonderful jobs and greater chances of moving to a more important job or position. Finally, if you like shopping, the variety of goods is very surprising---and, what is more, shops are often only a short walk away.Is life better then, in the city? Perhaps it is, when you are in your teens(十几岁) or twenties. However, as you get older, and especially if you have small children, the peace of the countryside may seem preferable. I certainly hope to move back there soon.1.What was the writer always thinking about when he was a child?A. Staying on the farmB. Moving to the countrysideC. Leaving home for the cityD. By inferringB. By comparingC. By listing examplesD. By giving explanations3.A new generation addiction is quickly spreading all over the world. Weboholism(瘾), a twentieth century disease, affects people from different ages. They surf the net, use e-mail and speak in chat rooms. They spend many hours on the computer, and it becomes a compulsive habit. They cannot stop, and it affects their lives.Ten years ago, no one thought that using computers could become compulsive behavior that could affect the social and physical life of computer users. Such behavior has seriously affected teenagers and college students. They are likely to log(写日志) on computers and spend long hours at different websites. They become hooked(着迷) on computers and gradually their social and school life is affected by this situation. They spend all free time surfing and don’t concentrate on homework, so this addiction influences their grades and success at school. Because they can findeverything on the websites, they hang out there. Moreover, this addiction to websites influences their social life. They spend more time in front of computers than with their friends. The relation with their friends changes. The virtual life becomes more important than their real life. They have a new language that they speak in the chat rooms and it causes cultural changes in society.Because of the change in their behavior, they begin to isolate themselves from society and live with their virtual friends. They share their emotions and feelings with friends who they have never met in their life. Although they feel confident on the computer, they are not confident with real live friends they have known all their life. It is a problem for the future. This addictive behavior is beginning to affectall the world.1.The main idea of the passage is about__________.A. the cause of weboholismB. the advantage of weboholismC. the popularity of weboholismD. the effect of weboholism 2.We can infer from the passage that_______.A. weboholism has the greatest effect on teenagersB. students can hardly balance real and virtual lifeC. people are addicted to games on the InternetD. virtual life is more vivid and attractive than real life. 3.Which of the following is NOT true of weboholism?A. It contributes to the development of the web.B. The chat room language may change social culture.C. The problem will be getting more and more serious later.D. People addicted to the web often become inactive in real life.4.Speaking from my past experience, it is very difficult to find good friends that you can trust but once you have found them, they are worth keeping forever! Therefore, I think friendship is the most important relationship that anybody could have. The qualities I look for in a friend are a good sense of humor but sensitivity when it matters. Also that friend would have to be strong-minded and highly spirited. I think that these qualities are the key qualities to look for in a good friend.Even the strongest friends can still have arguments, although usually about more serious topics, rather than the usual teenagechildish arguments. Some matters can seriously affect a friendship. If one of your friends started experimenting with harmful and dangerous drugs, what would you do ? A good friend would try to help as much as possible, whereas a bad example of a friend would simply shrug(耸肩) and turn a blind eye.Not only the bad things affect friendship ---- good activities do too. Such as bonding with one another, not just by going out on a night with them but by spending quality time with them and talking to each other, which indicates a good ability to communicate. This is a key aspect of a good friendship.Good friends do not always have to be in the same age group as you.I have a good friend and she is 47 years old and I am 16.Unfortunately, some people lose contact with their friends as they grow older, which is a sad way to lose a good friend.I think friendship is one of the most important things in life because if you have no friends you will have no happiness. 1.According to the author, true friendship _______.A. is easy to getB. deepens with timeC. needs managementD. affects one’s happiness 2.Paragraph 3 is mainly about______.A. why drugs are bad for teenagersB. problems that will test friendshipC. ways that help avoid argumentsD. whether a friend is trustworthy3.According to the author, which matters least in friendship?A. He was called by New Yorkers “the Little Flower” because he was short and always wore a carnation(康乃馨). He was a colorful character who used to ride the New York City fire trucks, raid(突袭)places that were illegal to make and sell alcohol with the police department, take homeless children to baseball games, and whenever the New York newspapers were on strike, he would go on the radio and read the Sunday funnies to the kids. One bitterly cold night in January of 1935, the mayor turned up at a night court that served the poorest district of the city. LaGuardia dismissed the judge for the evening and took over the bench himself. Within a few minutes, an old woman was brought before him, charged with stealing a loaf of bread. She told LaGuardia her daughter’s husband had deserted her, that her daughter was sick, and that her two grandchildren were starving. But the shopkeeper, from whom the bread was stolen, refused to drop the charges. “It’s a bad neighborhood, Your Honor,” the man told the mayor. “She’s got to be punished to teach other people around here a lesson.”LaGuardia sighed. He turned to the woman and said, “I’ve got to punish you. The law makes no exceptions—ten dollars or ten days in jail.” But even as he pronounced sentence, the mayor reached into his pocket. He took out a bill and said, “Here is the ten-dollar fine which I now pay for the defendant(被告); and furthermore, I am going to fine everyone in this courtroom fifty cents for living in a town where a person has to steal bread so that her grandchildren can eat. According to a UK government survey in 2017, about 570, 000 bike journeys were made every day in London. In fact, almost half of the vehicles that pass over London Bridge each day are bikes.London introduced a public bike-sharing system in 2010. “There can be no doubt that our trusty bicycles have changed the way people get around our great city,” Johnson told The Guardian in 2015.In London, bikes are used for more than just taking short trips to and from the subway. No matter where you want to go in the city, riding a bike is usually the quickest and easiest choice. And it’s not just shared bikes that the government is encouraging people to ride. In many companies across the UK, the UK government’s Cycle to Work scheme(计划)allows workers to buy a brand new bike without having to pay any tax(税). This means that it's common to see many people cycling to and from work, and some companies even provide showers and lockers in the workplaces for their workers. Some value it highly, believing that it is responsible for social progress and prosperity. Others say that competition is bad; that it sets one person against another; that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.I have taught many children who held the belief that their self-worth relied on how well they performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often life-and-death affairs. In their single-minded pursuit of success, the development of many other human qualities is sadly forgotten. However, while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed, others take an opposite attitude. In a culture which values only the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary players, they strongly blame competition. Among the most vocal are youngsters who have suffered under competitive pressures from their parents or society. Teaching these young people, I often observe in them a desire to fail. They seem to seek failure by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they always have an excuse: “I may have lost, but it doesn't matter because I really didn't try.” What is not usually admitted by themselves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost, that would mean a lot. Such a loss would be a measure of their worth. Clearly, this belief is the same as that of the true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistaken belief that one's self-respect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others. Both are afraid of not being valued. Only as this basic and often troublesome fear begins to dissolve can we discover a new meaning in competition.12.What does this passage mainly talk about?A.Competition helps to set up self-respect.B.Opinions about competition are different among people.C.Competition is harmful to personal quality development.D.Failures are necessary experiences in competition.13.The underlined phrase “the most vocal” in Paragraph 3 means ________.A.those who try their best to winB.those who value competition most highlyC.those who are against competition most stronglyD.those who rely on others most for success14.What is the similar belief of the true competitors and those with a “desire to fail”?A.One's worth lies in his performance compared with others'.B.One's success in competition needs great efforts.C.One's achievement is determined by his particular skills.D.One's success is based on how hard he has tried.15.Which point of view may the author agree to?A.Every effort should be paid back.B.Fear of failure should be removed in competition.C.Winning should be a life-and-death matter.D.Competition should be encouraged.二、阅读七选五(本题共计1小题,总分10分)5.(10分)In a world surrounded by bad news, it may feel like an unhappy place sometimes. 16.Here is a list of ideas to help you. AJoey is loyal, encouraging and self-sacrificing, always putting others’ interests ahead of his own. He is a hard worker, who also loves to run and play. In short, he’s an ideal friend and a heroic character. Here is the thing: Joey is a horse, who appears as the main character in Steven Spielberg’s new film War Horse. It is based on Michael Morpurgo’s 1982 novel, which also caused the same-titled Tony Awards winning play. The film follows the saga of Joey, a racehorse that’s trained for farm work under the loving care of Albert (Jeremy Irvine) after Albert’s drunk father Ted (Peter Mullan) overpays for the animal at auction (拍卖会).Then the World War I tears Albert and Joey apart. Joey is sold into the war effort for the British and starts his episodic adventures in Europe.Splendidly staged, the battle plots in the film are visually astounding and impressive. And with Spielberg’s unique, top-notch direction and storytelling skills, War Horse cannot escape its episodic nature, calling to mind another Spielberg film about the horrors of war and its effects upon soldiers and civilians—Saving Private Ryan. While that film shocked us with horrific scenes of bleeding, it relied on a company of easily-described characters and a focused storyline to present heroic themes.Like Saving Private Ryan, War Horse clings to a series of characters, not only Albert, but also British officers, French civilians and German soldiers, who display courage in the face of danger. Everyone who comes in contact with Joey is either already in touch with their inner angel or is quickly moved to become more humane.Although none of this covers the fact that we’ve seen this stuff elsewhere before, the lovely sentiment will steal your heart. And the emotional signature of Spielberg can be felt as he establishes the relationship between the boy and the horse and the mood of the piece—there will be tears. Therefore, calling this beautiful, dramatically incomplete film “Saving Private Joey”, is entirely justifiable. 21.In common with “Saving Private Ryan”, the film War Horse _________.A.is full of terrifying scenes of bleeding and killingB.received the title of Tony Awards Winning PlayC.tells the story happening in the Second World WarD.covers a lot of characters22.Which statement is true according to the passage? _________.A.War Horse is based on the same-titled novel by Steven Spielberg.B.Joey is a heroic character because he saved many people’s lives.C.Joey came to Albert’s care after Ted paid a lot of money for it.D.Albert sold Joey into the war effort for Europe.23.According to the passage, what does the underlined word astounding mean? _________.A.confusingB.astonishingC.inspiringD.disappointing24.What is the best title for the passage? _________.A.Joey—a heroic race horseB.Albert and JoeyC.Spielberg’s JoeyD.Saving Private JoeyBLast July, we asked what you dream of doing as an adult. I don’t worry about my girl; I’m sure she’ll be well trained in mixed martial arts. I worry about my son. I’m pretty sure he’s going to be feminine (女性化的). Sorry to say that, but let’s face it. No dad wants his son to go feminine. At the rate we’re moving in a couple of years you won’t be able to tell the difference between boys and girls. Sound extreme? Think about this. In every movie where advanced time-traveling beings come to our planet, there’s one constant: You can’t tell the male aliens from the female aliens! But that’s the future. Kids today are soft and fat. People ask why. Is it junk food? No. Junk food has been around for fifty years. Is it video games? No. Video games have been around for thirty years. None of the kids playing them back in the day were terribly obese. We’re all scratching our heads trying to figure out what we’ve introduced to society to ruin our kids. But it’s not anything we’ve added that has ruined our kids. It’s stuff we’ve gotten rid of.Take the gym rope for example. Remember that thing that stretched from the floor to the ceiling in your gym class that you could never climb? Most of the kids couldn’t make it to the top. But that wasn’t the point; the pointwas you had to try while some middle-aged guy who couldn’t make it up a flight of stairs shouted at you. We should have put our son on that rope, and given him a head start. But we didn’t want to shame the boy, so we took it down.Taking down the rope would be a good idea if there were no ropes in life. But they’re everywhere. You just can’t see them. They’re in every goal unrealized and expectation not met. The point everyone missed about the rope is you weren’t supposed to make it to the top. It was there to create a fire that burned in the oversize belly of every kid.32.What is the example of aliens used to show? ________A.Girls are growing like boys.B.Boys are going feminine.C.There are really time-traveling beings.D.Alien movies are popular with children.33.What causes kids today to be soft and fat? ________A.Junk food.B.Video games.C.Stuff introduced to society.D.Things removed from society.34.How does the author find teenagers today? ________A.They have too much dignity.B.They are overprotected.C.They are less independent.D.They are thought too highly of.35.What does the rope probably symbolize? ________A.Goals.B.Expectations.C.Competition.D.Assistance.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分, 满分10分)根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项. 选项中有两项为多余选项.Starting university can be a costly experience for most people. I always encourage such people, but I also explain that there’s a big difference between “being a writer” and writing. In most cases these individuals are dreaming of wealth and fame, not the long hours alone at a typewriter. “You’ve got to want to write,” I say to them, “not want to be a writer.”The reality is that writing is a lonely, private and poor-paying affair. For every writer kissed by fortune there are thousands more whose longing is never rewarded. When I left a 20-year career in the U.S.Coast Guard to become a freelance writer(自由撰稿者), I had not prospects at all. What I did have was a friend who found me myroom in a New York apartment building. It didn’t even matter that it was cold and had no bathroom. I immediately bought a used manual typewriter and felt like a genuine writer. After a year or so, however, I still hadn’t gotten a break and began to doubt myself. It was so hard to sell a story that barely made enough to eat. But I knew I wanted to write. I had dreamed about it for years. I wasn’t going to be one of those people who die wondering. What if? I would keep putting my dream to the test even though it meant living with uncertainty and fear of failure. This is the Shadowland of hope, and anyone with a dream must learn to live there.12.The passage is meant to________.A.warn young people of the hardships that a successful writer has to experienceB.advise young people to give up their idea of becoming a professional writerC.show young people it’s unrealistic for a writer to pursue wealth and fameD.encourage young people to pursue a writing career13.What can be concluded from the passage? ________A.Genuine writers often find their work interesting and rewarding.B.A writer’s success depends on luck rather than on effort.C.Famous writers usually live in poverty and isolation.D.The chances for a writer to become successful are small.14.“people who die wondering. What if?” (Line 5, Para. 3)refers to “those ________”.A.who think too much of the dark side of lifeB.who regret giving up their career halfwayC.who think a lot without making a decisionD.who are full of imagination even upon death15.“Shadowland” in the last sentence refers to ________.A.the wonderland one often dreams aboutB.the bright future that one is looking forward toC.the state of uncertainty before one’s final goal is reachedD.a world that exists only in one’s imagination第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项.选项中有两项为多余选项.If you have ever been in a school play or even made believe you were a doctor, detective, or a space traveler, you know the enjoyment that acting brings. Almost all of us have the wish to play the part of someone or something else. 16In the ancient world, acting was often associated with religious ceremonies and other special occasions. As far back as 2200 B. C, trained Chinese actors performed ceremonial dances in costume and makeup at harvest festivals.17 To the dance was gradually added pantomime—the imitation of movements and gestures as well as the wearing of masks, the singing of chants, and finally the use of dialogue. While acting was coming into its own in the ancient Chinese classical theatre, it was doing the same in thewestern world, in Greece. From about 500 B.C. on, acting became a highly specialized art in Greece. Greek actors, however, still wore masks, and their motions were largely fixed by custom. 18Modern acting, on the contrary, gives the individual actor great opportunity to develop his or her personal talents for serious, comic, or musical drama. The names, faces, and styles of famous movie actors are known worldwide. 19 A special form of acting takes place in radio drama, which was highly popular before television. In radio drama the actors face an unique challenge. They are unseen by their audience. So they must rely on voice alone to make their characters real to the listeners.20 Only forty percent of Broadway actors are employed, most of them for only part of the year. Those who become stars need not only talent, but determination. They must not be easily discouraged. Otherwise, they might give up before the opportunity for stardom presents itself.A.The origins of acting are in the act of remembering.B.Drama in Greece began with festivals honoring Dionysus.C.It is believed that this was the first step in the development of acting.D.Historical records indicate that this desire is as old as civilization itself.E.Acting is not, as many people think, a quick, easy road to fame and riches.F.Broadway and television provide other stages on which actors can display their talent.G.Consequently, they had little opportunity to demonstrate their individual personalities.第Ⅱ卷第二部分英语知识运用(共两节, 满分45分)artworks which they had 33 to sell to tourists. ACaught in the WebA few months ago, it wasn't unusual for 47-year-old Carla Toebe to spend15 hours per day online. She'd wake up early, turn on her laptop and chaton Internet dating sites and instant-messaging programs – leaving her bed for only brief intervals. Her household bills piled up, along with the dishes and dirty laundry, but it took near-constant complaints from her four daughters before she realized she had a problem."I was starting to feel like my whole world was falling apart – kind of slipping into a depression," said Carla. "I knew that if I didn't get off the dating sites, I'd just keep going," detaching (使脱离) herself further from the outside world.Toebe's conclusion: She felt like she was "addicted" to the Internet. She's not alone.Concern about excessive Internet use isn't new. As far back as 1995, articles in medical journals and the establishment of a Pennsylvania treatment center for overusers generated interest in the subject. There's still no consensus on how much time online constitutes too much or whether addiction is possible. But as reliance on the Web grows, there are signs that the question is getting more serious attention: Last month, a study published in CNS Spectrums claimed to be the first large-scale look at excessive Internet use. The American Psychiatric Association may consider listing Internet addiction in the next edition of its diagnostic manual. And scores of online discussion boards have popped up on which people discuss negative experiences tied to too much time on the Web."There's no question that there're people who're seriously in trouble because they're overdoing their Internet involvement," said psychiatrist (精神科医生) Ivan Goldberg. Goldberg calls the problem a disorder rather than a true addiction.Jonathan Bishop, a researcher in Wales specializing in online communities, is more skeptical. "The Internet is an environment," he said. "You can't be addicted to theenvironment." Bishop describes the problem as simply a matter of priorities, which can be solved by encouraging people to prioritize other life goals and plans in place of time spent online. The new CNS Spectrums study was based on results of a nationwide telephone survey of more than 2,500 adults. Like the 2005 survey, this one was conducted by StanfordUniversity researchers.About 6% of respondents reported that "their relationships suffered because of excessive Internet use." About 9% attempted to conceal "nonessential Internet use," and nearly 4% reported feeling "preoccupied by theInternet when offline."About 8% said they used the Internet as a way to escape problems, and almost 14% reported they "found it hard to stay away from the Internet for several days at a time.""The Internet problem is still in its infancy," said Elias Aboujaoude, a Stanford professor. No single online activity is to blame for excessive use, he said. "They're online in chat rooms, checking e-mail, or writing blogs. not limited to porn () or gambling" websites.Excessive Internet use should be defined not by the number of hours spent online but "in terms of losses," said Maressa Orzack, a Harvard University professor. "If it's a loss you're not getting to work, and family relationships are breaking down as a result, then it's too much." Since the early 1990s, several clinics have been established in the U. S. to treat heavy Internet users. They include the Center for Internet Addiction Recovery and the Center for Internet Behavior. The website for Orzack's center lists the following among the psychological symptoms of computer addiction:● Having a sense of well-being (幸福) or excitement while at the computer.● Longing for more and more time at the computer.● Neglect of family and friends.● Feeling empty, depressed or irritable when not at the computer.● Lying to employers and family about activities.● Inability to stop the activity.● Problems with school or job.Physical symptoms listed include dry eyes, backaches, skipping meals, poor personal hygiene (卫生) and sleep disturbances.People who struggle with excessive Internet use maybe depressed or have other mood disorders, Orzack said. When she discusses Internet habits with her patients, they often report that being online offers a "sense of belonging, and escape, excitement fun," she said. "Some people say relief…because they find themselves so relaxed."Some parts of the Internet seem to draw people in more than others. Internet gamers spend countless hours competing in games against people from all over the world. One such game, called World of Warcraft, is cited on many sites by posters complaining of a "gaming addiction."Andrew Heidrich, an education network administrator from Sacramento, plays World of Warcraft for about two to four hours every other night, but that's nothing compared with the 40 to 60 hours a week he spent playing online games when he was in college. He cut back only after a full-scale family intervention (干预), in which s told him he'd gained weight."There's this whole culture of competition that sucks people in" with online gaming, said Heidrich, now a father of two. "People do it at the expense of everything that was a constant in their lives." Heidrich now visits websites that discuss gaming addiction regularly "to remind myself to keep my love for online games in check."Toebe also regularly visits a site where posters discuss Internet overuse. "I have a boyfriend now, and I'm not interested in online dating," she said by phone last week. "It's a lot better now."21. My degree, with honors, in English literature had not really prepared me for anything practical.I knew I wanted to make a difference in the world somehow, but I had no idea how to do that. That’s when I learned about the Lighthouse Project.I started my journey as a Lighthouse Project volunteer by reading as much as I could about the experiences of previous volunteers. I knew it would be a lot of hard work, and that I would be away from my famil y and friends for a very long time. In short, I did not take my decision to apply for the Lighthouse Project lightly. Neither did my family.Eventually, however, I won the support of my family, and I sent in all the paperwork needed for the application. After countless interviews and presentations, I managed to stand out among the candidates and survive the test alone. Several months later, I finally received a call asking me to report for the duty. I would be going to a small village near Abuja, Nigeria. Where? What? Nigeria? I had no idea. But I was about to find out. After completing my training, I was sent to the village that was small and desperately in need of proper accommodation. Though the local villagers were poor, they offered their homes, hearts, and food as if I were their own family. I was asked to lead a small team of local people in building a new schoolhouse. For the next year or so, I taught in that same schoolhouse. But I sometimes think I learned more from my students than they did from me. Sometime during that period, I realized that all those things that had seemed so strange or unusual to me no longer did, though I did not get anywhere with the local language, and returned to the United States a different man. The Lighthouse Project had changed my life forever.24. What do we know about the author?A. His university education focused on the theoretical knowledge.B. The social media giant h as never denied that it’s keeping track of conversations you have near your phone ( if the Facebook app is open , that is ) , but not , one expert has told NBC that Mark Zuckerberg’s empire may be keeping ears on you at a more regular basis . According to Professor Kelli Burns , who teaches mass communication at the University of South Florida , it may be listening more often than it lets on .To prove her point , Burns turned on the microphone feature on her phone , and said , “ I’m really interested in go ing on an African journey .I think it’d be wonderful to ride in one of those jeeps . ” Less thana minute later , when she checked her Facebook page , she was met by a story about a journey –the first post on her newsfeed . There was also a car ad on her page .While Facebook says that it’s only keeping its ears open to help “ identify the music you’re listening to and TV matches you’re watching , ” Burns’ little experiment suggests that there may be other motivations at play as well . But the social media company has denied claims that it records any conversations , and told The Independent , “ Facebook does not use microphone audio to inform advertising or News Feed stories in any way . Businesses are able to serve related ads based on people’s interes ts and other statistic information , but not through audio collection . ”Whether you believe this statement or not , there are ways to stop Facebook from listening in at all . Simply turn off your phone’s microphone by heading over into Settings ( if you’re an iPhone user ) ,going to the Privacy tab , then clicking on Microphone . From there , you can remove Facebook’s mic privileges , and probably , stop the company from hearing your conversations . On Android , you can also go to Privacy under the Setti ngs tab , and change Facebook’s permissions . So the next time you’re chatting with your friends about your summer vacation plans , keep an eye on your Facebook feed . There may be more participants in your conversation than you realize .28. Why does the author mention the Big Brother in the first paragraph ?A. To explain who Big Brother is .B. To stress the importance of Facebook .C. To introduce the topic about Facebook .D. To encourage readers to share their ideas .29. What does the underlined “ it” in paragraph 1 refer to ?A.Big Brother .B. An empire .C. Facebook .D. A university .30. What might Facebook do if it is turned on ?A. Chat with you like a real friend .B. Turn on your phone’s m icrophone .C. Identify the movie you are watching .D. Show ads based on your conversation .31. What is the best title for the text ?A. Walls Have EarsB. The Apple of Your EyeC. Turn off Your Cell PhoneD. Facebook : a Caring BrotherDWhat’s the most expensive place to station an employee overseas? London? Tokyo? São Paulo? Try Luanda, Angola. That’s the finding of a survey by Mercer, the world’s largest human resources consulting firm, headquartered in New York City. Two African ci ties (Luanda, N’Djamena) were in the top 10, along with four (Moscow, Geneva, Zurich, Bern) in Europe, three (Tokyo, Singapore, Hong Kong) in Asia and one (Sydney) in Australia. Switzerland alone has three cities in the top 10.Mercer’s 2013 Cost of Livi ng Survey examined data from 214 cities worldwide, comparing a market basket of over 200 goods and services, including unfurnished luxury two-bedroom apartments or three-bedroom houses, movie tickets, blue jeans, international newspapers, coffee, fast food restaurant meals, gasoline, milk and soda.If it sounds odd that Angola would be the most expensive, Mercer’s Barb Marder explains that"Despite being one of Africa’s major oil producers, Angola is a ly poor country yet expensive for expatriates (居住国外的人) since imported goods can be dear. In addition, finding secure living accommodations that meet the standards of expatriates can be challenging and quite costly."The survey found similar supply issues in N’Djamena, Chad, the other top 10 city in Africa.Mercer measured locations worldwide against New York, on a U.S. dollar basis, meaning that exchange rate shifts could impact the rankings. For example, although Tokyo is Asia’s most expensive city for people who live in a foreign country, the weakening of the Japanese yen against the dollar makes it seem cheaper than it was a year ago. Canada, too, has become a bargain as the U.S. dollar strengthens against the Canadian dollar.Measurements were taken in March, 2013.What’s the trend in the United States?"Overall, U.S. cities either remain stable in the ranking or have slightly decreased due to the movement of the U.S. dollar against the majority of currencies worldwide,"explains Mercer’s Steven Nurney. However, that may change as real estate(房地产) prices r ise nationwide. New York is the nation’s most expensive place to station expatriates. While housing is generally the most important factor in the survey rankings, the survey revealed some other significant differences in prices. For example, you may need a vodka chaser after paying $ 8.29 for a cup of coffee in Moscow, but the same coffee in Managua, Nicaragua would cost only $ 1.54. Expect to pay $ 20.10 for a movie ticket in London, versus $ 5.91 in Johannesburg.32.The questions asked in the first paragraph are used to .A.express the author’s puzzlement at themB.call on readers to provide their answersC.remind readers of the existing issueD.introduce the topic to be discussed33.Which of the following cities may be the cheapest for employees overseas?A.Geneva.B.Sydney.C.Tokyo.D.New York. 34.One reason why the cost of living for employees overseas in Angola is high is that .A.the quality of life there is superiorB.its imported goods cost a lot of moneyC.the rent for an apartment is really highD.the living environment is human-friendly35.The key factor that impacts the ranking is .A.the general standard of incomeB.prices of daily necessitiesC.the exchange rate against U.S. dollarsD.the housing prices【二】根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
