It was so sweet.Jeremy: Oh—You like that, huh? Well, I cry at movies, too!Unit 3 Home “The view is great.”Sean: This is Sean McCain, live with Julie Morris, from Gemini One, the internatonal space station. Julie, can you hear me?Julie: Yes, I can hear you.Sean: Julie, can you tell us, what is it like living on the Gemini One?Julie: The Gemini One is wonderful. It’s not so different from living on Earth, really. We have jobs, friends, entertainment, natural beauty. And we have all the modern conveniences that you have on Earth.Sean: What modern conveniences?Julie: Well, we have movie theaters, game centers, music clubs, shops, restaurants—Sean: How about food? How do you get your food?Julie: I go shopping, just like everyone on Earth. You can get any type of food here.Sean: Is food expensive?Julie: Some of it is. The stuff that’s imported from Earth is very expensive. Likea banana from Earth can cost $100. But most food is really cheap. Sean: Do you miss getting away to the countryside or the mountains? Don’t you miss nature?Julie: Well, we have lots of nature up here. I can go hiking and mountain biking, riding in the hills, take a swim in a beautiful lake. It’s nice to relax and enjoy the moment while your packages are being wrapped. I like all of the traditions, and the care and attention that people give you, and the manners. My dad was, like, into motorcycles when he was younger—And he was in one of those, you know, motorcycle clubs.Nate: You mean, like a motorcycle gang?Jane: Yeah—But that was before he was married. I’ve been riding a motorcycle myself since I was 17.Nate: You? No way!Jane: Yeah, I’ve always done stuff like that.Nate: Really, like what else?Jane: Well, surfing, snowboarding—My dad and I even went skydiving once.We didn’t tell my mom, though. I’d like to get away from the phone for a week. And I think it’d be good for you.Cathy: So you’re telling me there’s no TV, no computers, and I have to wake up every morning to go hiking. Why on earth would anybody want to go there?Unit 10 Style “It means a lot to me.”Jean: I’m ready, are you? Why don’t you take that necklace off before you go in the pool?Chandra: Oh, this? Work in pairs and have a discussion about the important qualities you expect of a good father.I suppose a good father should have the following qualities. First, he should be a pillar of strength for the family. No matter what happens he is the one that the family can rely on. And he must be hard-working and optimistic about life. Second, he ought to have a strong sense of responsibility. Whatever he does, he should think about the family. He should also spend as much time as possible with his family no matter how busy he is/ In my opinion, a good father isone who cares about his children and knows how to communicate with his children. And he should know how to educate children, that is, to praise, not always scold and criticize them. What’s more, he should set a good example for his children to follow. He shouldn’t have any bad habits such as smoking, heavy drinking and gambling.10 Write a paragraph of around 80 words telling about one aspect of your parent’s character. You may begin your writing with the sentence: “My father/ mother is a (seriou s, strict, quick-tempered, optimistic, warm-hearted, understanding, generous, etc.) person.” You can also write your own beginning sentence. My Generous FatherMy father is a most generous man and is always ready to help someone in need. Although he earns a small salary, he never turns away those friends and neighbors who come to him for financial help. He even treat strangers very generously. One time, he met a pitiable-looking old man in the street who said he couldn’t go home because he had lost all the money he had with him. Father took the old man to our home, gave him a meal and then sent him home with some money. Father’s generosity has earned him a lot offriends, as well as a good reputation.Passage BThink About It1 The best of motherhood is to love with devotion. It is a kind of love wholly devoted to those who are loved. People often praise the greatness of motherhood because of its selflessness.2 A mother will try whatever she can to save her child if the child is in danger. For instance, if her child fell into the river, the mother would jump into the water instinctively even if she is not able to swim.3 Yes, I do believe that love can work a miracle. Unit 7 Family TiesPassage A Things I Learned From DadThree successful people reveal how fathers shape their destiny.Rebecca Lobo: Be LovingI knew - even when I was very young - just how much my mom and dad loved each other. Whenever one of them went out, they kissed each other good-bye. My brother, sister and I thought this was gross! But when I get married, I can only hope that I will have found someone who loves me as much as Dad loves Mom. Because there was always so much love in the family, I grew up with an incredible security blanket.Mom battled breast cancer when I was in college. Despite his worry, Dad was a pillar of strength for us and especially for her. After her mastectomy, she decided against the added trauma of breast-reconstruction surgery. Mom told me that in their entire marriage Dad never suggested that she even change her hairstyle. Instead he has always told her how beautiful she is. And that's why she thinks fighting cancer wasn't as hard as it could have been. She knew that no matter what, Dad and his love would be there. Rebecca Lobo, a former College Player of the Year, plays basketball for the WNBA's New York Liberty.Richard Branson: EncourageMy sisters and I grew up in a little village in England. Our father was a struggling lawyer, but I always knew he was special. He never criticized, but used praise to bring out our best. He'd say, "If you pour water on flowers, they flourish. If you don't give them water, they die."I remember as a child I said something unkind about somebody, and my father said, "Any time you say something unpleasant about somebody else, it's a reflection of you." He explained that if I looked for the best in people, I would get the best in return. I've tried to follow this principle in running my company.Dad's also always been very understanding. At 15, I started a magazine. It was taking up a great deal of my time, and the headmaster of my school gave me a choice: stay in school or leave to work on my magazine.I decided to leave, and Dad tried to sway me from my decision, as any good father would. When he realized I had made up my mind, he said, "Richard, when I was 23, my dad persuaded me to go into law. And I've always regretted it. I wanted to be an archeologist, but I didn't pursue my dream. You know what you want. Go fulfill that dream."As it turned out, my little publication went on to become Student, a nationalmagazine for young people in the U.K. My wife and I have two children, and I'd like to think we are bringing them up in the same way Dad raised me.Richard Branson is chairman of the Virgin Group of Companies, which owns Virgin Atlantic Airways, Virgin Entertainment and Virgin Cola.John Lewis: Have Hope As a young boy, I used to complain about having to get up so early to work on our farm in Troy, Ala. One day my father took me aside and said, "Son, we have to do this in order to make things better. Hang in there and things will improve."Dad was an optimist by nature, and he instilled in me this concept of hope about the future. He also taught us that we couldn't just be concerned about our own circumstances. We also had to be concerned about others.I saw my father always giving and always sharing. We didn't have that much to share or to give, but he had faith that things would work out-even under tremendously difficult conditions. There was a lot of fear back then in Alabama. Segregation was very rigid. Water fountains for us were marked "Colored," and we could only walk on one side of the street. But somehow he survived under these circumstances without becoming bitter, angry or hateful. My father passed away in 1977. But if he had lived to see my election to Congress he would have been very proud and happy. I'd like to believe that he's looking down and watching me today.John Lewis represents Georgia's 5th District in the U.S. House of Representatives.PA 父亲的教诲 三位成功人士讲述父亲怎样塑造我们的人生。
