We frequently stepped on each other’s feet. Both of us were being rhythmically(有节奏地)challenged, and we figured a series of lessons might help us look somewhat skilled on the danc ing floor. However, it didn’t.It didn’t matter that the lessons didn’t pay off. Our learning something new together gave us a string of good memories, such as taking a Thai cooking class ona cold Chicago night and learning how to make a classic cocktails in a common bar. These experiences are my best memories from the past 10 years. We always have such a great time when we’re trying something new together. It seems to have strengthened our relationship, and makes me feel like we have a closer connection. It turns out my theory as such is backed by research. One study shows that learning new things with your spouse(配偶), friends, or partners, can strengthen your connection or friendship. But how exactly does this work? The key is weakness. “Learning new thin gs together strengthens connection because it is at those moments that we can show our weakness to one another,〞says Dr. Hisla Bates. “When we are learning a new task, misfortunes and failures are sure to happen. In those moments when we fail, the other party can be there in favor of us. We can Work together to find a solution, and working together helps deepen the connection.〞The benefits gained from learning new things with your partner can come from activities as small as hiking, trying a new diet, going boating in the local lake or taking a fitness class together. You don’t have to bungee jump or skydive to grow closer. Try selecting activities that both partners are unfamiliar with, as this will ensure you’re on the same page.Trying to learn something new together once a month will benefit you and your spouse or friends . Overall, some of my best memories with my husband are the moments when we are learning something new together.1. What were the author and her husband doing in Paragraph 1?A. Playing sports.B. Practising dance.C. Teaching lessons.D. Takinga walk.2. The underlined word backed (in Paragraph 3) can be probably replaced by_______.A. judgedB. madeC. doubtedD. supported3. There are problems which psychology doesn’t have answers to, and which no words can describe. Sometimes the best thing one can do is to listen openly and silently. And I would do in this way.The first two times we met, David didn’t say a word. He sat there, only looking up to look at the children’s drawings on the wall behind me. I suggested we play a game of chess. He nodded. After that he played chess with me every Wednesday afternoon — in complete silence and without looking at me. It’s not easy to cheat in chess, but I admit I made sure David won once or twice.Usually, he arrived earlier than agreed, took the chess board and pieces from the shelf and began setting them up before I even got a chance to sit down. It seemed as if he enjoyed my company. But why did he never look at me?“Perhaps he simply needs someone to share his pain with,” I thought. “Perhaps he senses that I respect his suffering.” Some months later, when we were playing chess, he looked up at me suddenly.“It’s your turn,” he said. After that day, David started talking. He got friends in school and joined a bicycle club. He wrote to me a few times, about his biking with some friends, and about his plan to get into university. Now he really started to live his own life.Maybe I gave David something. But I have also learned that one — without any words— can reach out to another person. All it takes is a hug, a shoulder to cry on, a friendly touch, and an ear that listens.24.What was David like when the writer first met him?A. He was very nervous.B. He was in deep sorrow.C. He was mentally troubled.D. He was frightened by the writer.25. What do we know form the second paragraph?A. The writer didn’t know what to do.B. The writer had a plan to help DavidC. The writer decided to keep silent.D. The writer couldn’t solve the problem.26. Which of the following is TRUE?A. The writer cheated when playing chess.B. David never looked at the writer.C. Chess healed David’s wounded heart.D. The writer gave his chess to David.27. What is the main idea of the passage?A. A boy fixed his mental problem by playing chess.B. A psychologist should be good at listening.C. A calm mind helps solve problems.D. A listening ear matters in helping others.23.(8分(Picking pineapples can be hard, heavy work often with little reward. The price paid for each individual fruit is a small part of a penny. The leaves from pineapple plants are usually thrown away. A use for them has now been found, turning the leaves into fabric, which provides some extra income for workers.“I think everybody is quite surprised that the fabric is made of pineapple, because it doesn’t smell like pineapple, it’s not spiky, it’s got a nice texture(质地) to it. So it’s quite an unusual thing to be working with.” said Ben Patton, designer for Material Products. To make the fabric, fibers are extracted(提取) from the leaves. These get sent from the Philippines to Spain.Once there, machinists complete the process of turning them into a material which hasbeen named ‘Pinatex’.An online shop based in Cambridge has begun using Pinatex to create handbags, satchels (背包)and purses. And these are the finished bags. If you want one, they’ll charge you around 137 pounds. The texture is slightly crinkled – not too different to some leathers. As manufacturers become more confident using the material, it’s hoped that more items will be made out of it in the future, making use of pineapple leaves that were otherwise destined to be wasted.28.What is the function of the first paragraph?A.Giving the main idea.B.Bringing in the topic.C.Raising the problem.D.Introducing the background.29.Why are Ben Patton’s words quoted here?A. To show that the pineapple is a useful fruit.B. To show that pineapple leaves are comfortable to feel.C. To show that the new material is surprisingly good.D. To show that the product is profitable.30. What does the underlined word “fabric” in the fourth paragraph mean?A.Cloth.B.Leather.C.Bag.D.Money.31. 于对市爱美阳光实验学校古高一英语下学期期末考试试题第一:阅读理解〔共两节,总分值40分〕第一节〔共15小题;每题2分,总分值30分〕阅读以下短文,从每题所给的四个选项〔A、B、C和D〕中,选出最正确答案。

ACold weather can be hard on pets, just like it can be hard on people. Sometimes owners forget that their cats are just as used to the warm shelter (住所) as they are. Some owners will leave their animals outside for a long period of time, thinking that all animals are used to living outdoors. This can put their pets in danger of serious illness. There are things you can do to keep your animal warm and safe.Keep your pets inside as much as you can when the weather is bad. If you have to take them out, stay outside with them. When you’re cold enough to go inside, they probably are too. If you must leave them outside for a long time, make sure they have a warm, solid shelter against the wind, thick bedding, and plenty of non-frozen water. If left alone outside, dogs and cats can be very smart in their search for warm shelter. They can dig into snow banks or hide somewhere. Watch them closely when they are left outdoors, and provide them with shelter of good quality. Keep an eye on your pet’s water. Sometimes owners don’t realize that a water bowl has frozen and their pet can’t get anything to drink. Animals that don’t have clean and unfrozen water may drink dirty water outside, which may contain something unhealthy for them.1.What do we learn about pets from Paragraph 1?A.They are often forgotten by their owners.B.They are used to living outdoors.C.They build their own shelter.D.They like to stay in warm places.2.Why are pet owners asked to stay with their pets when they are out in cold weather?A.To know when to bring them inside.B.To keep them from eating bad food.C.To help them find shelters.D.To keep them company.3. Theviews invite a long look from a comfortable chair in front of the wooden house.Every window in our wooden house has a view, and the forest and lakes seldom look the same as the hour before. Each look reminds us where we are. There is space for our three boys to play outside, to shoot arrows, collect tree seeds, build earth houses and climb trees. Our kids have learned the names of the trees, and with the names have come familiarity and appreciation. As they tell all who show even a passing interest, maple makes the best fighting sticks and white pines are the best climbing trees. The air is clean and fresh. The water from the well has a pleasant taste, and it is perhaps the healthiest water our kids will ever drink. Though they have one glass a day of juice and the rest is water, they never say anything against that. The seasons change just outside the door. We watch maples turn every shade of yellow and red in the fall and note the poplars’ putting out the first green leaves of spring. The rainbow smelt fills the local stream as the ice gradually disappears, and the wood frogs start to sing in pools after being frozen for the winter. A family of bird rules our skies and flies over the lake.5.. What can be learned from Paragraph 2?A. The scenes are colorful and changeable.B. There are many windows in th e wooden house.C. To share the joy of living in the nature.CHaving parked near the car wash beside the supermarket, I came away to wait for my wife to come from work. Coming my way from across the parking lot was what society would consider a bum (流浪汉). From the looks of him, he had no car, no home, no clean clothes, and no money. There are times when you feel generous but there are other times that you just don’t want to be bothered (打搅). This was one of those “don’t want to be bothered times.〞“I hope he doesn’t ask me for any money,〞I thought. He didn’t. He came and sat on the seat by the bus stop but he didn’t look like he could have enough money to even ride the bus. After a few minutes he spoke, “That’s a very pretty car〞. He was ragged (衣着破旧的) but he had an air of dignity (尊严) around him. I said, “thanks,〞 without taking a look at him.He sat there quietly for a moment. The expected begging for money never came. As the silence between us widened something inside said, “Ask him if he needs any help.〞I was sure that he would say “yes〞. So I asked, “Do you need any help?〞He answered in three simple words that I shall never forget. The three words shook me. “Don’t we all?〞 he said.I was feeling successful and important, above a bum in the street, until those three words hit me. Don’t we all? I needed help. Maybe not for bus fare or a place to sleep, but I needed help. I reached in my wallet and gave him not only enough for bus fare, but enough to get a warm meal and shelter for the day. Those three little words still ring true. No matter how much you have, you need help too. However, no matter how little you have, you can give help too.9. We had not seen rain in almost a month. The crops were dying. Cows had stopped giving milk. The streams were long gone back into the earth. If we didn't see some rain soon we would lose everything.I was in the kitchen making lunch for my husband and his brothers when I saw my six-year old son, Billy, walking toward the woods. He was obviously walking with a great effort... trying to be as still as possible. Minutes after he disappeared into the woods, he came running out again, toward the house.Moments later, however, he was once again walking in that slow purposeful long step toward the woods. This activity went on for over an hour: walking cautiously to the woods, then running back to the house. Finally, my curiosity got the best of me. I crept out of the house and followed him on his journey. He was cupping both hands in front of him as he walked; being very careful not to spill(洒出) the water he held in them. Branches and thorns slapped his little face but he did not try to avoid them. He had a much greater purpose. As I leaned in to spy on him, I saw the most amazing site.Several large deer appeared threatening in front of him. But Billy walked right up to them.I almost screamed for him to get away. And I saw a baby deer lying on the ground, obviously suffering from heavy loss of water and heat exhaustion, lift its head with great effort to lap up the water cupped in my beautiful boy's hand.I stood on the edge of the woods watching the most beautiful heart I have ever known working so hard to save a life. As the tears that rolled down my face began to hit the ground, they were suddenly joined by other drops... and more drops... and more. I looked up at the sky. It was as if God, Himself, was weeping with pride.25. Why did the author follow her son?A. Because there might be danger.B. Because her son was doing a good deed.C. Because she was curious.D. Billy walked into the woods and then returned over and over again.D. There were few trees in the woods.27. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?A. Importance of waterB. The water of lifeC. How to save animalsD. Animals in dangerCGrowing up in Philadelphia, Lieberman started cooking with his stay-at-home dad when he was seven. His food-loving family had two kitchens, and he quickly learned what was the best way to bake his cakes. Lieberman improved his kitchen skills greatly during a year abroad before college, learning from a cook in Italy and studying local specialties(地方特色菜)in Germany, Spain and France. At Yale, he was known for throwing dinner parties, single-handedly frying and baking while mixing drinks for dozens of friends. Just for fun, he and some friends decided to tape a show named Campus Cuisine about his cooking. Lieberman was a real college student showing his classmates how to do things like make drinks out of dining-hall fruit. That helped the show become very popular among the students. They would stop Lieberman after classes to ask for his advice on cooking. Tapes of the show were passed around, with which his name went beyond the school and finally to the Food Network.Food Network producer Flay hopes the young cook will find a place on the network television. He says Lieberman’s charisma is key.“Food TV isn’t about food anymore,” says Flay. “It’s about your personality(个性)and finding a way to keep people’s eyeballs on your show.”But Lieberman isn’t putting all his eggs in one basket. After taping the first season of the new show, Lieberman was back in his own small kitchen preparing sandwiches. An airline company (航空公司)was looking for someone to come up with a tasteful, inexpensive and easy-to-make menu to serve on its flights, Lieberman got the job.28. We can learn from the tex t that Lieberman’s family ____.A. have relatives in EuropeB. love cooking at homeC. often hold partiesD. owna restaurant29. The Food Network got to know Lieberman ____.A. at one of his partiesB. from his teachersC. through his taped showD. on a television program30. What does the word “charisma” underlined in the text refer to?A. A natural ability to attract others.B. A way to show one’s achievement.C. Lieberman’s after-class interest.D. Lieberman’s fine cooking skill.31. Why did the airline company give Lieberman the job?A. He could prepare meals in a small kitchen.B. He was famous for his shows on FoodTV.C. He was good at using eggs to make sandwiches.D. He could cook cheap, delicious and simple meals.DIt’s nothing new that you can find many files or services you can download or use from the Internet. The question is : Is downloading legal or not? In most cases the answer is negative, because sharing and downloading are illegal. Of course, you can find files for legal downloading, but you have to pay for them.It seems innocent if you click on the download mark, but it isn’t. It should be compared with stealing in a store. Would you steal a magazine, an MP3 player or a car? Downloading from the Internet is a theft, and sharing files, once you have stolen them, only makes it worse. For example, if everybody only downloaded, movies wouldn’t make money and the studios wouldn’t invest millions of dollars to make new ones. Many people may think it better, easier and cheaper to do downloading. I think, that is the main reason why Internet users prefer sharing something to buying them. In the modern world we love convenience and what could be more convenient than getting music, films and games without having to leave your house? You don’t need to pay for what you get, there is no registration, and you don’t have to wait until shops open or the CD/DVD you want is posted to you. However, you could be in big trouble if you are caught. You could go to prison as a result of acting unlawfully, but so far only a tiny amount of people have been charged for downloading illegally. The majority of people who download illegally, and use the files for their personal use, will not ge t in trouble. And that’s why it’s important for people to understand what the long-term consequences are if they don’t want to pay for their music, films and TV. Will film and music companies still spend millions of pounds every year if they have no chance of making a profit? The answer is plainly “no”.Finally I would like to say that the Internet offers a lot of services for money, but people will always try to get them for free. To summarize my thoughts I’d like to highlight that illegal downloading is both unfair towards producers and dangerous for those who practise this kind of activity. You have to decide whether to buy or download.32.Many people download files free from the Internet because_________.A. They follow others’ examples to do such thin gs.B. They don’t think they may be charged by the producer.C. They think everything on the Net can be shared by others.D. They think it is legal, convenient and easy.33.What can be inferred from Paragraph 2?A. Downloading helps movies become more popular.B. Downloading free files is as illegal as stealing.C. Sharing files on the Internet is dangerous.D. Sharing files on the Internet can make a profit.34.What does the underlined word “highlight” in paragraph 4 mean?A. StressB. ExplainC. AdmitD. Deny35.What is the author’s purpose of writing this text?A. He advises readers to download legal files.B. He asks readers to limit the amount of free downloading.C. He wants to make it clear that downloading for free is against the law.D. He tells readers how to avoid being charged for downloading.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,共10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
