Traveling alone can be daunting. I have traveled by myself many times but, on every occasion, there was someone to meet me at the other end of the bus, train or plane journey. This time was different.
Last week I had a holiday, from work, but none of my friends had the same week off. I decided that I still wanted to do something, so I booked a train ride to Toronto and reserved a bed in a hostel for one week.
One week by myself. Would I be lonely? Would I be bored? Quite the opposite. In fact, there are many benefits that come from traveling alone. Firstly, I was able to do whatever I wanted. I spent hours in museums that would have seemed boring and dull to some of my friends. I walked all around the city, which some people may have found too exhausting. Instead of relying on someone else to remember directions or to suggest activities to do, I discovered my independence and developed map-reading skills that I didn’t know I had. I could get up and go to sleep whenever I wanted and I didn’t have to wait for anyone else to shower and get ready every morning. Being in the safe environment of a hostel with like-minded travelers also gives a great opportunity to meet new people from all over the world, which can help combat loneliness.
Despite the benefits, I found that there were also some disadvantages of traveling alone. I missed having someone to talk to and to bounce ideas off. Experiences are often more enjoyable if they are shared, and part of the fun of traveling is the memories yo u have afterwards. Without a travel partner, I won’t be able to laugh about and remember my Toronto adventure with a friend or family member in years to come.
In addition, eating in a restaurant or cooking in the hostel was less fun on my own.
I am very proud of myself for traveling alone, and I had a fantastic time in Toronto. However, in the future, I think I will always prefer to travel with another person or in a small group. Though, maybe it depends on who you travel with I would rather be by myself than with someone who is lazy, difficult and argumentative. 41.What happened to the author last week?
A .She traveled alone to Toronto during a work vacation.
B .She felt lonely away from home and missed her family.
C .She found someone meeting her during a trip to Toronto.
D .She made a trip with her friend during the same week to Toronto. 42.We can learn from the article that the author ________. A .finds it boring and dull to visit museums B .has already acquired great map-reading skills C .believes she could benefit by traveling alone more D .enjoys sharing traveling stories with family and friends
43.What does the underlined word “combat” in paragraph 3 probably mean?

A.Optimistic and talkative. B.Humorous and generous.

Biologists from the John Innes Centre in England discovered that plants have a biological process which divides their amount of stored energy by the length of the night. This solves the problem of how to portion out(分配)energy reserves during the night so that the plant can keep growing, yet not risk burning off all its stored energy.
While the sun shines, plants perform photosynthesis(光合作用). In this process, the plants change sunlight, water and carbon dioxide into stored energy in the form of long chains of sugar, called starch(淀粉). At night, the plants burn this stored starch to fuel continued growth.
“The calculations are precise so that plants pr event starvation but also make the most efficient use of their food,” said study co-author Alison Smith. “If the starch store is used too fast, plants will starve and stop growing during the night. If the store is used too slowly, some of it will be wasted.”
The scientists studied the plant Arabidopsis, which is regarded as a model plant for experiments. To give the plants some math tests, the biologists let night arrive unexpectedly early or late for them.
During one of the exams, they shut off the lights early on them that had been grown with twelve-hour days and nights. Putting them into darkness after only an eight-hour day means they didn’t have time to store as much starch as usual. And this forced the plants to adjust their normal nightly rhythm.
Amazingly, even after this day length trick, the plants did very well in their exams and ended up with just five percent of starch left over at the end of the night. They had neither starved, nor stored starch that could have been used to fuel more growth.
The authors suggested that similar biological calculators may explain how a migratory bird, the little stint, can make a five-thousand-kilometer journey to their summer habitat in the Arctic and arrive with enough fat reserves to survive only approximately half a day more, on average.
The results of the study were published in eLife.
46.According to the passage, plants _________. A.use little energy during the day
B.usually stop growing at night
C.waste a lot of energy at night
D.store starch during the day
47.What did the scientists do when studying Arabidopsis?
A.They changed the plant’s light conditions.
B.They provided the plant with more starch.
C.They tried to keep the plant’s natural rhythm.
D.They attached a biological calculator to the plant.
48.When morning arrived, the experimental plants ________.
A.nearly died of lack of food
B.used most of their stored energy
C.began to regulate their food store
D.stored enough starch for the next day
49.What can we learn about the little stint?
A.They may have a system to control energy consumption.
B.They often die during their long and difficult journey.
C.They leave the Arctic in summer every year.
D.They are unable to calculate the distances.
50.The passage mainly tells us _________.
A.plants feel hungrier day by day
B.plants are good at storing energy
C.plants do math to survive the night
D.plants use starch to fuel their growth
D
There is something to be said for being a generalist, even if you are a specialist. Knowing a little about a lot of things that interest you can add to the richness of a whole, well-lived life.
Society pushes us to specialize, to become experts. This requires commitment to a particular occupation, branch of study or research. The drawback to being specialists is that we often come to know more and more about less and less. There is a great deal of pressure to master one's field. You may pursue training, degrees, or increasing levels of responsibility at work. Then you discover the pressure of having to keep up.
英语试题 第9页(共24页) 英语试题 第10页(共24页)
Some people seem willing to work around the clock in their narrow specialty. But such commitment can also weaken a sense of freedom. These specialists could work at the office until ten each night, then look back and realize they would have loved to have gone home and enjoyed the sweetness of their family and friends, or traveled to exciting places, meeting interesting people. Mastering one thing to the exclusion (排 除)of others can hold back your true spirit.
Generalists, on the other hand, know a lot about a wide range of subjects and view the whole with all its connections. They are people of ability, talent, and enthusiasm who can bring their broad perspective (视角)into specific fields of expertise (专长).The doctor who is also a poet and philosopher is a superior doctor, one who can give so much more to his patients than just good medical skills.
Things are connected. Let your expertise in one field fuel your passions in all related areas. Some of your interests may not appear to be connected but, once you explore their depths, you discover that they are. My editor Toni, who is also a writer, has edited several history books. She has decided to study Chinese history. Fascinated by the structural beauty of the Forbidden City as a painter, she is equally interested in learning more about Chinese philosophy. "I don't know where it will lead, but I'm excited I'm on this pursuit."
These expansions into new worlds help us by giving us new perspectives. We begin to see the
interconnectedness of one thing to another in all aspects of our life, of ourselves and the universe. Develop broad, general knowledge and experience. The universe is all yours to explore and enjoy. 51.To become a specialist, one may have to_____. A .narrow his range of knowledge B .avoid responsibilities at work C .know more about the society D .broaden his perspective on life
52.The specialists mentioned in Paragraph 3 tend to______. A .treasure their freedom B .travel around the world C .spend most time working D .enjoy meeting funny people
53.According to the author, a superior doctor is one who_____. A .is fully aware of his talent and ability B .is a pure specialist in medicine C .should love poetry and philosophy
D .brings knowledge of other fields to work
54.What does the author intend to show with the example of Toni? A .Passion alone does not ensure a person's success. B .In-depth exploration makes discoveries possible. C .Everyone has a chance to succeed in their pursuit. D .Seemingly unrelated interests are in a way connected. 55.What could be the best title for the passage? A .Be More a Generalist Than a Specialist B .Specialist or Generalist: Hard to Decide C .Turn a Generalist into a Specialist D .Ways to Become a Generalist

2. 本卷共6小题,共35分。

第三部分:写作
第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读短文,按照题目要求用英语回答问题。

How do you keep a library when you've got no room for your books? With rising rents and record numbers of young people having to move with their parents, it's clear that we are a moving generation.
As a student in Leeds, I moved three times in four years, in London it was seven times in three years. Regularly having to load our possessions into laundry bags and boxes takes a lot of our finance and energy, but the effect on our book collections is rarely considered. Keeping a collection of beloved books in a damp flat with no shelves, which you'll probably have to move out of in six months' time, is a challenge. Deciding which books to keep and which to reject becomes increasingly difficult. Do you hold on to the books you know you'll reread or do you keep the to-be-read pile intact?
Donating books to a charity shop or local school may be virtuous, but when you haven't had time to read them since your last move, it becomes depressing. There's a copy of Much Ado About Nothing I've been moving around with for nearly a decade because it is the only piece of Shakespeare in the marketplace.
英语试题第11页(共24页)英语试题第12页(共24页)
“Just buy a Kindle!” you might argue —but for many people, books are more than just books. They offer us an emotional connection to the past, to the person who gave them to us. They are a way to brighten up a dark flat; they are a link to home; they are the hardest thing to move and the most enjoyable thing to unpack. They can't be removed.
So what if you are already lacing your second move this year and can't bear the thought of pensioning off more of your beloved books? You start reading more. Read all the books in your current bedroom and work out if they're worth the trip; give away as many books as you can; leave books with trusted friends to be reclaimed at a later point. Start looking at your books creatively.
56.Why has the moving generation appeared? (no more than 15 words)
57.What makes the author keep a copy of Much Ado About Nothing? (no more than 10 words)
58.What is the main idea of the fourth paragraph? (no more than 10 words)
59.What does the underlined phrase “pensioning off” in Paragraph 5 mean? (no more than 3 words)
60.What would you do with your books when you have to move? Give a persuasive reason. (no more than 25 words)
