Obama still smokes in secret
US President Barack Obama may have just made life more difficult for cigarette smokers, but he still smokes every now and then in secret.
Obama, who has publicly struggled to quit smoking, said he still hasn’t completely kicked the habit even after signing a law this week that will set tough new rules for the tobacco industry.
“As a former smoker I constantly struggle with it. Have I fallen off the wagon sometimes? Yes. Am I a daily smoker, a constant smoker? No,” Obama said at a news conference.
“I don’t do it in front of my kids, I don’t do it in front of my family. I would say that I am 95 percent cured, but there are times where I mess up,” he said.
The new law gives the US Food and Drug Administration the power to strictly limit the making and marketing of tobacco products.
At a White House signing ceremony Monday, Obama said he was among the nearly 90 percent of smokers who took up the habit before their 18th birthday.
“Once you go down this path it’s something you continually struggle with, which is exactly why the law we signed is s o important because what we don’t want is kids going down that path in the first place,” he said at the news conference.
Nearly 20 percent of Americans smoke and tobacco use kills about 440,000 people a year in the United States due to cancer, heart disease, and other serious diseases.
56. According to the passage, Obama _________.
A. has no plan to give up smoking
B. still smokes as usual
C. no longer smokes

57. What does the underlined sentence mean in the third paragraph?

B. Have I stopped smoking completely?
C. Do I still smoke sometimes?
D. Do I still smoke as much as before?
58. Which of the following is Not TRUE?
A. Nearly 90 percent of the population of America smoke.
B. Nearly 90 percent of the smokers of America began to smoke before they turned 18.
C. Nearly one-fifth of Americans smoke.
D. Smoking kills about 440,000 people a year in the USA.
59. The new law first looks at _________ health.
A. adults’
B. middle-aged people’s
C. women’s
D. children’s

Mistakes are a part of life. To err is human. Failure is also a part of life, not the end of life. Be happy facing life’s challenges. When you make the effort to be happy and to improve your life, you are actually rewarded along the way.
Life is like a game and maybe you can award(奖励)points for every effort that has been a success for you. Try it. Add ten points for every achievement. And when you have reached 50 points, just yell, “Hey, I’ve won!” and give yourself a reward. If you happen to have missed your
points for whatever re asons, tell yourself, “well, I tried!” which is better than not trying at all. Don’t let it be said you didn’t try.
What is it that you want to make yourself happy? Actually happiness means different things to different people. For example, an athlete will be happy winning his first race. For a new mother happiness would be seeing her baby’s first steps. Happiness for a poor person would mean having a meal just for today. So happiness for you is really something simple that you want for yourself.
It really does not have to be big. As a matter of fact you should always have realistic expectations. Make the best out of every given situation. If you expect a certain result from a situation and it does not happen, don’t get despondent. This just means trying harder next time. We all have in us the power to succeed. Don’t let “give up” be a part of your vocabulary.
60. By saying “To err is human”, the author means that _________.
A. human beings should try to avoid making mistakes
B. no one is perfect and everyone makes mistakes
C. mistakes and failures make up our life
D. human beings make mistakes easily.
61. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 2?
A. Try to reach 50 points.
B. Never stop trying in your life.
C. Award yourself for your success.
D. Don’t be afraid of missing your points
62. The author proves his idea in Paragraph 3 through _______.
A. examples
B. nu mbers
C. experiments
D. stories
63. The underlined word “despondent” in the last paragraph means ________.
A. frightened
B. disappointed
C. surprised
D. excited
C
Ho rror gripped(紧握)the heart of the World War I soldier as he saw his lifelong friend fall in battle. Caught in a trench with continuous gunfire whizzing(子弹等在空中掠过的声音)over his head, the soldier asked his lieutenant(陆军中尉), if he might go out into the“No Man’s Land”between the trenches to bring his fallen comrade back.
“You can go,”said the lieutenant,“but I don’t think it will be worth it. Your friend is pro bably dead and you may throw your own life away.”The lieutenant’s words didn’t matter, and the soldier went anyway.
Miraculously he managed to reach his friend, hoisted(扯起)him onto his shoulder, and brought him back to their company’s trench. As the two of them tumbled in together to the bottom of the trench, the officer checked the wounded soldier, then looked kindly at his friend.“I told you it wouldn’t be worth it,”he said.“Your friend is dead, and you are mortally wounded.”
“It was worth it, though, sir,”the soldier said.
“How do you mean‘worth it?’”responded the lieutenant.“Your friend is dead!”
“Yes sir,”the private answered.“But it was worth it because when I got to him, he was still alive, and I had the satisfaction of hearing him say,‘Jim, I knew you’d come.’”
Many a time in life, whether a thing is worth doing or not really depends on how you look at it. Take up all your courage and do something your heart tells you to do so that you may not regret not doing it later in life.
64. W hat’s the lieutenant’s attitude towards the soldier’s saving his friend?
A. Negative.
B. Positive.
C. Neutral.
D. Supportive.
65. The underlined word“Miraculously”can be replaced by .
A. Happily
B. Excitedly
C. Surprisingly
D. Disappointedly
66. According to the soldier, why did he say“It was worth it.”?
A. Because the soldier saved his friend in time.
B. Because the soldier successfully brought his friend back.
C. Because what he did will bring him great honor and make him get promoted in his
later life.
D. Because his friend was still alive when he reached him and he didn’t make his friend
disappointed.
D
A child-like robot. Wakamaru, developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries of Japan and combining the roles of nurse, companion and security guard, will soon be in the market to look after the growing number of old people with no one to look after them.
Cameras fixed under the“eyebrows”of the robot enable it to“see”as it moves around in a house. The images can be sent to the latest mobile phones, which can show the pictures. Wakamaru speaks with either the voice of a boy or a girl. It is also designed to provide companionship, saying hello to its“papa”when he comes home. Based on a vocabulary of around 10,000 words, it is the first household robot which is able to hold simple conversations. It can not only speak, but also understand answers and react accordingly. It will ask“Are you all right?”if its owner doesn’t move for some time. If the answer is no, or there is no answer, it will telephone preset numbers, send images and work as a speakerphone. It can recognize up to 10 faces and be set to tell forgetful people when it is time to take medicine, eat and sleep.
However, like most robots, it cannot climb stairs. Mitsubishi developed Wakamaru from robots which have already been made to go around nuclear power facilities.“Looking at the ageing of society and the falling birth rate we decided that this could work as a business. We want to offer it as a product that helps society,”said the project chief. The developers plan to sell the robot from April this year at between5,000 and 6,000 pounds.
The life expectancy(寿命)of Japanese women has shot up to almost 85, the highest in the world. At the same time, large families are bei ng replaced by nuclear families. This has left many Japanese anxious about their elderly parents. Therefore, the technology has gained nation-wide publicity in Japan.
67. The passage is written with the purpose to .
A. introduce a new robot
B. solve the ageing problem
C. tell people the rapid development of technology
D. tell people how to use the robot
68. It can be inferred from the passage that .
A. the robot can dial proper number for help
B. the robot is likely to have a promising market
C. the robot enables the Japanese to live longer
D. many elderly Japanese are anxious about their future
69. The underlined part“nuclear families”in the last paragraph probably means“”.
A. families with nuclear power facilities
B. small families without a parent
C. families with children and old people
D. families with parents and their children only
70. What is the best title for the passage?
A. The Latest Development of Robot
B. Japanese Robot and the Ageing Society
C. Large Market of the New Robot
D. Japan-made Robot Helps the Old
第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

选项中有两项为多余选项。

When I was a little girl, my mom would say,“Half the fun of doing anything is sharing it with others.”71 Friends and mates allow us to enjoy our successes and our joys, comfort us in our hard moments, and provide a mirror for us to learn more about ourselves. I’ve always looked at friends as the family we choose. They enrich our lives. As Robert Louis Steven once said,“72 ”
To be a good friend or partner, it’s important to be a good listener. Hear what your friend or mate has to say first rather than jump to conclusions or get defensive. 73 When they hear their words repeated back to them, it can help them to realize what they said was not exactly what they meant to say.
74 You know the old golden rule,“Care for others the way you would like them to care for you.”The support of a friend during a tough time could make the difference between success and failure. Encouragement and confidence are the gifts that can help change a person’s life.
Take care, though, with whom you choose to have close relationship, for they can have a great effect on yourself—respect and life path. As someone once told me,“75 They will either take you up or down.”
A. I am afraid so.
B. It is quite true.
C. Friendship is the most important factor.
D. Sometimes it is useful to be their mirror.
E. A friend is a present which you give yourself.
F. The attitudes of your friends are like the buttons on a lift.
G. Patience, sympathy and understanding are also important qualities.

Dear Mary,
I am a Senior 3 student. I’m going to take this summer’s colleg e entrance examination. In preparation for it, I am studying very hard. As a result, I often feel exhausted both physically and mentally. However, my parents still put a lot of pressure on me. I know they have great expectations for me, but I feel that the pressure is too heavy for me to cope with. I attempted to communicate with them, but failed.
Now I’m quite upset about it. How can my parents understand me? I really don’t know what to do. Could you please give me some advice?
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua。
