Contacts(交往)between Japan and the rest of the world have
grown a great deal in the twentieth century. In the last thirty
years, business contacts between Japan and the West have become
very important. Many foreign companies now have offices in Japan
and Japanese businessmen do business around the world. Differences between Japanese and Western ways of doing business, how-
ever, often confuse(搞混)the foreign businessman and make doing
business in Japan difficult for foreigners.
The American businessman, for example, wants to start talk-
ing business immediately. He wants quick decisions. He does not
want to wait. The Japanese, on the other hand, likes to arrive at
decisions gradually after giving them a great deal of thought. An-
other thing foreign businessmen have difficulty understanding is
when a Japanese means" Yes" or" No". This is because of cultural
differences between Japanese and Western society which make it
difficult for a Japanese to say" No" directly.
In English it is easy to say "No" to something we do not want
to do. But in Japan, it is very difficult to say "No". To refuse an invitation or request with "No", or a similar phrase, is felt to be impolite. It is thought to be selfish and unfriendly. So instead of saying
"No" directly the Japanese have developed many ways to avoid saying" No". These enable them to avoid hurting other people's feelings. However, this often makes communication with the Japanese
difficult for foreigners to understand and follow.

A. it is not always easy for foreigners to do business in Japan
B. Japan is a very important country for businessmen
C. business contacts between Japan and the West are important
D. Japanese businessmen do business all around the world

A. American businessmen do things more quickly than Japanese ones
B. American businessmen like to say" Yes" and" No"
C. Americans usually say what they are thinking
D. Americans do not express themselves clearly
63. The passage tells us that
A. Japanese businessmen are not good at business
B. foreign businessmen should first try to understand Japanese
C. foreign businessmen must be more polite
D. if we want to succeed we must learn from Japanese

For some time past, it has been widely accepted that babies
and other creatures learn to do things because certain acts lead to
"rewards(报酬), "and there is no reason to doubt that this is true.
But it used also to be widely believed that effective rewards, at least
in the early time, had to be directly connected to such basic physiological (生理的)"drives" as thirst or hunger. In other words, a baby
would learn if he got food or drink or some sort of physical comfort, not otherwise.
It is now clear that this is not so. Babies will learn to behave
in ways that produce results in the world with no reward except
success in sight.
Papousek began his studies by using milk in the normal way
To "reward' the babies and so teach them to carry out some simple
movements, such as turning the head to one side or the other. Then
he noticed that a baby who had had enough to drink would refuse the milk but would still go on making the learned response(回答)
with clear signs of pleasure. So he began to study the children's responses in situations where no milk was provided. He quickly found
that children as young as four months would learn to turn their
heads to right or left if the movement " turned on” some lights--and
indeed that they were able to learn some more turns to bring about
this result, for example, two left or two right, or even to make as
many as three turns to one side.
Papousek's light experiment was placed directly in front of the
babies and he made the interesting observation that sometimes
would not turn back to watch the light closely although they w~
"smile and speak” when the light was on. Papousek concluded that
it was not the sight of the lights that pleased them. It was the success they were achieving in solving the problem, in mastering
skill, and then there is a basic human nature to make sense of the
world and bring it under control.
64. According to the writer, babies learn to do things which ___________.

There are various reasons why the cancers appear to be on the
increase. For one thing, though their victims ( ..~ :~ ~ ) are to be
found in all age groups, they are particularly likely to attack persons
in their middle and advanced years. Naturally., since people live
longer these days, there are more cancer victims than formerly.
Again, with better methods of diagnosis, doctors can more readily
recognize cancerous growths that would formerly have passed unnoticed or that would have been wrongly diagnosed. It is believed,
too, that certain habits and conditions of modem living, including
heavy smoking and the pollution of the air, may expose people to
more cancer-causing circumstances than before.
We all look forward to the day when a simple medical test can
find cancer while it is still small. Researchers around the world are
working on such a test. Most of their work involves the examination of proteins and fats in the blood.
Researchers in Boston have found substances in the blood of
cancer patients that do not appear in healthy persons. The test
showed which persons had cancer and which did not. It was correct
more than 90 percent of the time.
The researchers believe the test may be able to show cancer
very early in its development. Cancers discovered early usually can
be treated successfully.
The test examines fat particles in the blood called lipids. Cancer seems to change lipids although doctors do not know why. The
test showed differences between the lipids of the persons with cancer and the lipids of those without cancer.
The researchers say the new test could be a step to develop a
simple way to check patients for cancer before the disease shows on
X-rays.
68. According to the passage, the underlined word "diagnosis"
means___________
A. treatment
B. examination
C. research
D. success

small

70. Which of the following is TRUE?
A. The simple way of checking cancers has something to do
with proteins and fats in patients' blood.
B. We know, from the passage, why the middle-aged persons
can easily suffer from cancer.
C. X-rays is the simple way to determine whether a person has
cancer or not.
D. Maybe cancers have nothing to do with a person's habits and
living conditions.
71. Which is the best title for this passage?
A. Cancers are on the Rise
B. Recent Test in Boston
C. How to Find Cancer

Alaska, which was called Russian/America before it was sold
to the United States, joined the Union as the forty-ninth state in
1959.
Alaska is now the largest of all the 50 states of the U. S. A. It
was in 1867 that President A. Johnson's Secretary of State (国务卿), Seward, bought Alaska from the Russians at the cost of 7.2
million dollars. The buying of the huge northern land seemed at
first something foolishly done. Not only was Alaska difficult to
reach, but it was also hard to live in, and it appeared to have no importance in time of war. Besides there are volcanoes (火山) there
as Alaska lies on the Pacific "ring(环状)of fire". In Alaska large
treeless areas are covered with snow all the year. For these reasons
the buying of Alaska was called " Seward's Folly"( 愚蠢)at that
time.
However, in 1886, gold was found in Alaska, and people
poured into the island. Since then other important natural resources
were discovered, including oil. But most people visit Alaska in order
to see the endless beauty of nature that the northern land discloses
to them. For example, there are about 11,000 islands in Alaska.
And in a certain area of Alaska the sun does not set for eighty-
two days every year.
72. Alaska is now ___________ of the Union.
A. the fifth state
B. one of the fifty states
C. the forty-- ninth state
D. the fiftieth state
73. Alaska joined the Union as a state ___________
A. 92 years after Seward bought it
B. 92 years before Seward bought it
C. as soon as it was sold to the U. S.
D. as soon as gold was found there
74. The buying of Alaska was called" Seward's Folly”at that time
because___________
A. it was difficult to reach
B. it was hard to live in
C. it was too cold there
D. nobody knew it was rich in natural resources
75. Now most people come to Alaska in order to ___________

One day, as soon as he hurried home, Ning Ning took a bench and
climbed up to find the savings box. He poured all his coins out,
wrapped them with a handkerchief and then went away. His little
brother Ding Ding saw all this and thought, "Why did Ning Ning take away all of our savings? Perhaps he will buy something nice to eat. "
Ding Ding was thinking of this with great delight when Ning Ning came back, with nothing in his hands. Ding Ding was very surprised and
asked Ning Ning why he hadn't bought anything. Everything was clear when Ding Ding was led to a small blackboard, on which was written " NingNing and Ding Ding have given 16.8 yuan to the Project Hope. "。
