Romanticism was an artistic, literary, and intellectual movement that originated in Europe toward the end of the 18th century and in most areas was at its peak in the approximate period from 1800 to 1850.

Realism was a loosely used term meaning truth to the observed facts of life. Realism in literature is an approach that attempts to describe life without idealization or romantic subjectivity.

Modernism:The years from 1910 to 1930 are often called the Era of Modernism, for there seems to have been in both Europe and America a strong awareness of some sort of “break” with the pa st.

Epic（史诗）：it is a long verse narrative on a serious subject, told in a formal and elevated style, and centered on a heroic or quasi-divine figure on whose actions depends the fate of a tribe, a nation, or the human race.

Heroic Couplet（英雄双韵体）refers to lines of iambic pentameter which rhyme in pairs: aa, bb, cc, and so on.

The sonnet is a poem in 14 lines with one or the other rhyme scheme,a form much in vogue in Re naissance Europe, expecially in Italy ,France and England.

Elegy（哀歌或挽歌）：a poem of mourning, usually over the death of an individual. An elegy is a type of lyric poem, usually formal in language and structure, and solemn or even melancholy in tone.

A complex and often lengthy lyric poem, written in a dignified formal style on some

lofty or serious subject. Odes are often written for a special occasion, to honor a person or a seas on or to commemorate an event.

Iambic pentameter is a meter in poetry, consisting of an unrhymed line with five iambs or feet

Pentameter: А poem is said to be written in (a particular) pentameter when the lines of the poem have the length of five feet

Imagery is in literature a "mental picture" which appeals to the senses. It can both be figurative and literal.

a stanza is a grouped set of lines within a poem, usually set off from other stanzas by a blank line or indentation.

Theme is something that the poet wants to express

Diction:A writer‘s choice and use of words in speech or writing, particularly for clarity, effectivene ss, and precision.

A soliloquy is a device often used in drama when a character speaks to himself or herself, relating thoughts and feelings, thereby also sharing them with the audience, giving off the illusion of being a series of unspoken reflections

Dramatis personae is a phrase used to refer collectively, in the form of a list, to the main characters in a dramatic work

Setting: the place and time in a work of narrative
