Unit 1 Great scientists第一部分:阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)AWhen Julie Jones and Caroline Atkin were schoolgirls, they promised to be best friends for ever. Years later, Caroline died from a brain tumor at the age of 45, leaving five children. In her last weeks, she asked Julie to raise the children as her own. Julie, a single mother of three with a small income, didn’t hesitate.“I held her in my arms and said ‘You’ll be OK’, but I knew I was losing her.”She says.“The hospital rang me and I rushed there, but Caroline had just gone,” she says.“I went to her house. The children arrived home from school in a taxi and I gathered them in my arms and said: ‘Mommy has gone to Heaven.’”“Michael, who was 11, left the room. Kieran, ten, sat in great surprise; James, nine, broke down; while Emma, seven, and Chantelle, five uneasy. I brought them home.”Julie, mother of Adam, 20, Peter, 19, and 14-year-old Christian, moved the table from her dining room to turn it into an extra bedroom for the girls. She says “I put a tent up in the garden, and the children took turns to camp outside. We turned into a game. The children were terribly hurt by losing both their parents. But now, despite our lack of space and money, we have become one happy family.” The table in the kitchen is so small that Julie had to cook Christmas dinner in two sittings. Her eldest son has left for university and his bedroom is used by the younger boys.Julie had to work 50 hours a week and runs the home on her salary.“The children aren’t quiet anymore. Diagnosed with diabetes(糖尿病), Thomas would need to inject himself with insulin three times a day for the rest of his life or risk nerve damage, blindness and even death. And if that weren’t bad enough, he had no health insurance. After a month of feeling up set, Thomas decided he’d better find a way to fight back. He left Canton, Michigan for New York, got a job waiting tables, nicknamed himself the Diabetic Rockstar, and created diabeticrockstar. com, a free online community for diabetics and their loved ones—a place where over 1100 people share personal stories, information and resources.Jason Swencki’s son, Kody, was diagnosed with diabetes at six. Father and son visit the online children’s forums (论坛) together most evenings. “Kody gets so excited, writing to kids from all over,” says Swencki, one of the site’s volunteers. “They know what he’s going through, so he doesn’t feel lonely.”Kody is anything but alone: Diabetes is now the seventh leading cause of death in the United States, with 24 million diagnosed cases. And more people are being diagnosed at younger ages. These days, Thomas’s main focus is his charity (慈善机构),Fight It, which provides medicines and supplies to people —225 to date—who can’t afford a diabetic’s huge expenses. Fight-it. org has raised $23,000 —in products and in cash. In May, Thomas will hold the first annual Diabetic Rockstar Festival in the Caribbean.Even with a staff of 22 volunteers, Thomas often devotes up to 50 hours a week to his cause, while still doing his full-time job waiting tables. “Of the diabetes charities out there, most are putting money into finding a cure,” says Bentley Gubar, one of Rockstar’s original members. “But Christopher is the only person I know saying people need help now.”5. What can we learn about Fight It?A It helps the diabetics in financial difficulties.B It organizes parties for volunteers once a year.C It offers less expensive medicines to diabetics.D It owns a well-known medical website.CHappy birthday! Do birthdays really make people happy? Of course they do. Birthdays celebrate the day we were born. Besides, that extra candle on the cake suggests another year of growth and maturity—or so we hope. We all like to imaginethat we’re getting wiser and not just older. Most of us enjoy seeing the miracle of growth in others, as well. For instance, seeing our children develop and learn new things makes us feel proud. For Americans, like people in most cultures, growing up is a wonderful process. But growing old? That’s a different story.Growing old is not exactly pleasant for people in youth-oriented American culture. Most Americans like to look young, act young and feel young. As the old saying goes, “You’re as young as you feel.” Older people joke about how many years young they are, rather than how many years old. People in some countries value the aged as a source of experience and wisdom. But Americans seem to favor those that are young, or at least “young at heart”.Many older Americans find the “golden years” to be anything but golden. Economically, “senior citizens” often struggle just to get by. Retirement at age 65 brings a sharp decrease in personal income. Social security benefits usually cannot make up the difference. Older people may suffer from poor nutrition, medical care and housing. Some even experience age discrimination (歧视). In 1987, American sociologist Pat Moore dressed up like an older person and wandered city streets. She was often treated rudely—even cheated and robbed. However, dressed as a young person, she received much more respect.Unfortunately, the elderly population in America is increasing fast. Why? People are living together. Fewer babies are being born. And middle-aged “baby boomers” are rapidly entering the groups of the elderly. America may soon be a place where wrinkles (皱纹) are “in”. Marketing experts are already noticing this group of consumers (消费者).8. The main idea of the third paragraph is________.A. the golden years can make the old earn lots of moneyB. many old people in America are leading a hard lifeC. the old in America have to retire at the age of 65D. American social security benefits are not good9. From the last paragraph we know that the underlined word “in” can be replacedby________.A. seriousB. badC. disappearing slowlyD. growing fast10. From this passage we can know________.A. in America, growing up is not a wonderful processB. in America, growing up is as wonderful a process as growing oldC. in America, growing up is a wonderful process, while growing old is notD. in America, growing old is a wonderful process, while growing up is not11. What should be mentioned in the following paragraph?A. The public will change their attitude towards old people.B. People will provide more services to the old in their communities.C. Companies will soon produce more goods for old Americans.D. The government will pass laws to ensure the benefits of the people.DTo many web-building spiders, most of whom are nearly blind, the web is their essential window on the world: their means ofcommunicating, capturing prey (猎物), meeting mates andprotecting themselves. A web-building spider without its web islike a man cast away on an island of solid rock, totally out of touch and destined to starve to death. So important is the web to an orb-web spider’s survival that the animal will continue to construct new webs daily even if it is being starved. For 16 days the starving spider builds completely normal webs. Then, as the animal gets scrawnier (憔悴的), it constructs a wider-meshed web using fewer strands (线). Such webs would only trap larger prey, which is more economical from the perspective of a starving spider. The spider stores energy by recycling web protein. It simply eats its own web each evening and re-uses it to produce new silk. In studies with radioactively labeled materials, it was found that 95 percent of web protein reappears in the next day’s web. Most of t he energy needed for web-building is used in walking over the strands as they are laid down.Scientists are impressed by the adaptability(适应能力)of the spider’s highlypreprogrammed brain, which is larger for its size than the brain of any other invertebrate (无脊椎动物). If web-building is interrupted, or if some of the existing strands are destroyed, the spider simply goes back to see where the web is left off and then finished building a normal web. One spider will even finish building the incomplete web of another.12. What is probably the best title for the passage?A. Secrets of Spiders’ AdaptabilityB. Importance of Webs to SpidersC. Secrets of the Spiders’ LifeD. Spiders’ Highly Preprogrammed Brain13. According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?A. Web-building spiders have good eyesight.B. One web-building spider usually conducts one web.C. Most spiders will stop conducting webs when hungry.D. Web-building spiders will probably die without their webs.14. A spider conducts a wider-meshed web when _______.A. it is 16 days oldB. it is getting weakerC. it has fewer strandsD. it hunts for food15. A spider’s ability to finish an incomplete web proves that _______.A. it has a highly preprogrammed brainB. it reuses its web protein to reproduce new silkC. the web is everything for a spiderD. it is able to rebuild a destroyed web第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

ADo you suppose Darwin, one of the greatest scientists of all time, really did foolish experiments?Or did he do experiments that were so simple and basic that other people just thought they were foolish?Sometimes, people think they already known the answer to a question or the solution to a problem.Sometimes, they really do know an answer or a solution, but without thinking they are important.Charles Darwin didn't settle for(满足于)just thinking he knew something. And he believed all things could be important however simple they seemed to be.Suppose you drop sheets of paper that are of exactly the same size and shape. If you drop them at the same time in the same place, they will fall in the same way.Now make one of the sheets of paper into a tight little ball and let it drop along with the other sheets. What happens? You have done an experiment that is so simple that you might think it couldn't be worth anything. But this simple experiment is important. It explains part of our presentday understandings of physics that were worked out long ago by Galileo and Newton. And these understandings set_aside some of ancient Greek physics.Scientists sometimes stop to look at very simple things and to think very hard about them.Even the simplest idea, which we might think is foolish, can shake the foundations of science.1.The passage tells us that Charles Darwin ________.A.was a great English scientistB.always liked doing the experiments that others thought difficultC.thought even the simplest thing was importantD.didn't get on well with others2.The underlined phrase “set aside” most probably means________.A.throw away B.store upC.put to use D.realize3.The author of the passage tries to________.A.convince us that Charles Darwin,Galileo and Newton are the greatest things could be important though they seemed to be simple.D.Galileo and Newton worked out ancient Greek physics.BMisery and setbacks are not always as terrible as one imagines.Hard times can offer new ways of looking at life that would otherwise never be known. And,if you are a writer, this can be the source of much of your success.Popular British author,Charles Dickens'(1812—1870) family could hardly make ends meet. They could only afford to send one of their six children to school.Dickens was not that child. His parents chose to send a daughter, who had a talent for music,to an academy. Then at the age of 12,Dickens' life took another turn for the worse. His father,a clerk, was placed in prison for unpaid debts. And,being the oldest male left at home,Dickens took up work at a factory. His horrible experience there became the fuel for his future writing. His father was freed three months later and inherited a small amount of money.Dickens was then sent to school. From 1836 to 1837,he wrote a monthly series of stories. Thus The Pickwick Papers, came into being, which brought fame to the 23yearold man.Throughout his career,Dickens covers various situations in his novels. He wrote about the miserable lives of the poor in Oliver Twist, the French Revolution in Tale of Two Cities, and social reform in Hard Times. He also wrote David Copperfield,a book thought to be based on his own life.“I do not write bitterly or angrily, for I know all these things have worked together to make me what I am,”he once said. His difficult childhood did shape the person he became,as well as his writing career. There are shades_of young Dickens in many of his most beloved characters, including David Copperfield and Oliver Twist.Like the author, all these characters come from poor beginnings and are able to rise above their setbacks and achieve success.“Minds, like bodies, will often fall into an illconditioned state from too much comfort,”he once wrote. On June 9th,1870,aged 58,Dickens died, leaving one unfinished work. The words on his tombstone read:“He was a sympathizer to the poor, the suffering and the oppressed (受压迫者),and by his death, one of England's greatest writers is lost to in itD.to work hard for itCGeorge Washington Carver was born some time in the early mid-1860s.A sickly child,Carver was unable to work in the fields,so he did gardening. He was left with many free equip his own lab.He and his students would search trash heaps(垃圾堆) for things to use. This proved that Dr.Carver was well ahead of his time.In 1916,he published a research report on peanuts, which helped many farmers turn to peanuts as a cash crop and saved the economy(经济) of the South when it was destroyed by the cotton insect attack.Carver continued his research with the peanut. He went on to If you look at female animals who have never gone through pregnancy, they act differently toward young. But if she goes through pregnancy, she will sacrifice her life for her infant that is a great change in her behavior that showed in genetic alterations(改变)to the brain.”13.How do scientists know “Motherhood may make women smarter”?A.Some researchers have told them.B.Many women say so.C.They know it by experimenting on rats.D.They know it through their own experience.14.What does the phrase “litters of pups “mean in the second paragraph?A.Baby rats. 高中英语Unit1Greatscientists单元检测试题含解析新人教版必修52017113012
Unit 1 Great Scientists单元检测Ⅰ.阅读理解AMy mom takes pride in the fact that I was talking in three and four word sentences before I was ten months old. Some say it’s a gift while others simply think I talk too much.As my thirties came to a close, I found myself reflecting on my life. I’m very happy and have no significant sadness or disappointment. However, when I looked back on those times of difficulty, I saw a clear common denominator(特征): I didn’t seem to know when to stop talking. Whether it was hurt ing someone’s feelings, or having carelessly told a secret, the incident could have been avoided, had I closed my mouth sooner. So I decided to practice the power of quiet. To take this step, I needed to understand how people could sit comfortably in a group and not talk. Why does my husband feel completely content to say nothing in a conversation? He’s highly intelligent and has wonderful opinions but he’ll sit quietly and just listen. Even when he’s asked a pointed question, he’ll answer with few words while still communicating effectively. What a talent! Can you imagine being happy just listening? In surveying those I know who talk less than I do, I got two answers—they either didn’t feel confident enough to speak up, or they just didn’t feel the need t o participate in the conversation. Of course there were other reasons for not talking, but these were the two most popular answers. The first one didn’t work for me. I’m just fine letting people know what I think about them, and hopefully it will make the conversation much more interesting. The second one didn’t work either. I do feel the need to participate. I feel it physically like an electrical pulse through my body; sometimes it’s so strong that it causes me to behave badly in the form of interrupting or speaking in an unusually loud voice.I had to look further. An interesting thing happened on this journey to the power of quiet. During myweekly yoga class, it came to me like an answer so clear that the words rang in my head like soft, heavenly bells.I talked too much so people would know I cared about them. It was my way of taking care of those I love. I decided before my fortieth birthday, that from that day forward, those around me would know I loved them, and cared what they thought and felt, but I was going to practice the power of quiet. As my forty-second birthday comes close, I can say that deciding to talk less has been more about centering on quality rather than quantity. I’ve found that listening more shows those who I care about that I really do care how they feel. Now when I break in, it means more to them. Oh, sure, I still have my short periods of talking too much, but for the most part this has been one resolution that I can calla success.1. The writer was determined to practice the power of quiet because of ______.A.other people’s criticismsB.her reflections on her past lifeC.her mother’s adviceD.her age2. In Paragraph 3 the writer mentions her husband mainly ______.A.to show how one communicates effectivelyB.to explain the reason for his silence in a conversationC.to give her high opinion of his communication skillsD.to give an example of those who have the power of quiet3. By “I had to look further”, the writer means she had to ______.A.look into the future in order to succeed in practicing the power of quietB.try harder to prevent herself from talking too muchC.find out other reasons why she should talk lessD.survey people in other areas who talk littleBThink about vitamin D when you’re catching up on summer rays. It’s sometimes called the “sunshine vitamin” because it’s produced in your skin in response to sunlight. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble (脂溶性的) vitamin in a family of compounds that includes vitamins D-1, D-2, and D-3. It can affect as many as 2,000 genes in the body.Vitamin D has several important functions. Perhaps the most vital are regulating the absorption of calcium and phosphorous(磷), and promoting normal immune system function. Getting enough vitamin D is important for normal growth and development of bones and teeth, as well as improving resistance against certain diseases. In addition to its primary benefits, research suggests that vitamin D may also play a role in:● reducing your risk of multiple sclerosis(多发性硬化), according to a 2006 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association● decreasing your chance of developing heart disease, according to 2008 findings published in Circulation● helping to reduce your possibility of developing the flu, according to 2010 res earch published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition● regulating mood and warding off depression● losing weight or preventing heart diseaseHow do you get it? Your body produces vitamin D naturally when it is directly exposed to sunlight. A little can go a long way. All you need is 10 minutes a day of midday, pre-sunscreen sun exposure, especially if you have fair skin. Besides getting vitamin D through sunlight, you can also get it through certain foods and supplements to ensure adequate levels of the vitamin in your blood.4. Why is Vitamin D sometimes called “Sunshine Vitamin”?A.Because it is produced in your skin reacting to sunlight.B.Because it is named a fat-soluble vitamin.C.Because it is produced with enough sunshine.D.Because it is like sunshine in summer.5. How can a person ensure enough Vitamin D in his/ her body?A.He/ She could ask doctors for help.B.He/ She should walk a long way in the sunlight.C.He/ She should be exposed to sunlight for a long time.D.He/ She should get it through sunlight, foods and supplements.6. Which of the following is NOT the function of Vitamin D?A.Preventing heart disease.B.Helping the body grow normally.C.Producing calcium and phosphorous.D.Decreasing anxiety and nervousness.7. Which is the best title of the passage?A.Vitamin D Family.B.Vitamin D, You Need It.C.Ways to get Vitamin DD.A Good Medicine --Vitamin DⅡ.完形填空阅读下面的短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

Unit 1 Great scientistsⅠ.阅读理解Nuclear radiation has a certain mystery about it, partly because it cannot be detected by human senses. It can’t be seen or heard, or touched or tasted, even though it may be all around us. There are other things like that. For example, radio waves are all around us but we can’t detect them, sense them, without a radio receiver. Similarly, we can’t sense radioactivity without a radiation detector. But unlike common radio waves, nuclear radiation is not harmless to human beings and other living things. At very high levels, radiation can kill an animal or human being outright(彻底地) by killing masses of cells in important organs. But even the lowest levels can do serious damage. There is no level of radiation that is completely safe. If the radiation does not hit anything important, the damage may not be significant. This is the case when only a few cells are hit, and if there are killed outright. Your b ody will replace the dead cells with healthy ones. But if the few cells are only damaged, and if they reproduce themselves, you may be in trouble. They reproduce themselves in an unusual way. They can grow into cancer. Sometimes this does not show up for many years. This is another reason for some of the mystery about nuclear radiation. Serious damage can be done without the knowledge of the person at the time that damage has occurred. A person can be irradiated(放射治疗)and feel fine, then die of cancer five, ten, or twenty years later as a result. Or a child can be b orn weak or easy to get serious illness as a result of radiation absorbed by its grandparents.Radiation can hurt us. We must know the truth.1.According to the passage, the danger of nuclear power lies in____.A.nuclear mysteryB.radiation detectionC.radiation levelD.nuclear radiation2.Radiation can lead to serious results even at the lowest levels______.A.when it kills few cellsB.if it damages few cells, and if they reproduce themselvesC.though the damaged cells can repair themselvesD.unless the damaged cells can reproduce them selves3.Radiation can hurt us in the way that it can______.A.kill large numbers of cells to cause death immediatelyB.damage cells which may grow into cancer years laterC.affect the healthy growth of our younger generationD.lead to all of the above results4.Which of the following can be mostly possibly inferred from the passage?A.The importance of protection from radiation cannot be overemphasized(过分强调).B.The mystery about radiation has been solved.C.Cancer can’t be caused by radiationD.Radiation can hurt those who do not know about its danger.Vienna—In spite of Iraq’s decision to stop oil deliveries, the 11-nation Organization of Petroleum Expo rting Countries (OPEC) will not increase production to make up the shortfall, ministers decided Tuesday in Vienna. The 11 oil ministers decided to meet again on July 3 to discuss the effects of the Iraq temporary stop. The organization’s president, Charkid Khelil of Algeria, said after the meeting that stocks were high and prices were stable, so quota(配额) increases were not necessary. The E.U. A speaker said OPEC had to take all possible measures to keep or lower the oil price.Saudi Arabia’s Oil Minister Al i Al-Nuaimi had earlier said there would not be any shortfall of oil in the market. The organization had already taken steps to fill the gap, he said. OPEC Secretary General Ali Rodriguez added that the period of the Iraq stop to export was not known, so other exporters were not going to lift quotas yet. If the market was destabilized(动摇), a suitable response could be made.Iraq on Monday stop shipments of crude oil to protest against the U.N.
