The original text of "The Wolf" in Grade Seven:
A butcher was returning home late one evening, with all the meat in his basket gone, leaving only some leftover bones. On his way, he encountered two wolves who followed him from afar.
The butcher was afraid and threw a bone at them. One wolf stopped after getting the bone, while the other continued to follow. He threw another bone, and the second wolf stopped, but the first one came back again. The bones were all gone, but the two wolves still followed him as before.
The butcher was greatly alarmed, fearing that he would be attacked from both front and rear. He saw a wheat field nearby, where the owner had stacked firewood into a mound, covered with a tarp. The butcher ran to lean against it, putting down his basket and holding his knife. The wolves dared not approach him and just stared at him intently.
After a while, one of the wolves left, while the other sat in front like a dog. After a long time, its eyes seemed to close, showing a very relaxed attitude. The butcher suddenly stood up and slashed the wolf's head with his knife, killing it with several more strokes. As he was about to leave, he turned to look behind the pile of firewood and saw another wolf had dug a hole in it, intending to sneak in from behind to attack him. Its body was already halfway in, with only its tail sticking out. The butcher cut off its hind leg from behind, killing it too. He then realized that the first wolf had been pretending to sleep, as a ruse to lure him.
Wolves can indeed be cunning, but in the blink of an eye, both of them were killed. How many tricks can wild animals really pull? It's just something to laugh about.。
