A
In the tenth grade, I began working for free at a vet’s that was run by a friend.
I wanted to get experience for what I thought would be my future job. However,on one
particular Saturday morning I learnt something perhaps more important.
The hospital was in the middle of one of the poorer sections of the city and some people could only pay for the most basic treatments. On this Saturday,a man and his young son,who was probably about 7 years old, walked in with a small cat in a cardboard box. There was something wrong with the cat’s left eye. But the man could not afford to pay for the cost of the medicine. He kept quiet for a while, and then he asked where the nearest animal shelter was. Hearing this, his son cried and started to argue with him. All of a sudden,an older woman who was sitting in the waiting room stood up,walked up to the counter, and told the man that she would pay for the cost. The man thanked her and the son got to keep a healthy cat.
I always thought it was the right thing to help out a needy person, but I only saw people do acts of kindness on TV or in movies. What the woman did made me believe that these things do happen in real life, and quite often.
Now,when I can’t decide whether to help someone who is in need,I remember this woman, and then I have the courage to step up to the plate. Sometimes other people follow. 16.We can infer that a vet’s is most probab ly a hospital for .
A.kids B.the poor C.animals D.women
17.For what purpose did the writer work at the vet’s?
A.To help his friend with his work.
B.To make some pocket money.
C.To learn more about society.
D.To gain some work experience.
18.What wou ld the man probably do with the cat if the woman didn’t help him?
A.Give it up. B.Take it home without treatment.
C.Give it to the woman. D. Give it to someone on the street.
B
Many people go to school for an education. They learn languages, history, geography, physics, chemistry and mathematics. Others go to school to learn a skill so that they can make a living. School education is very important and useful. Yet no one can learn everything
they want to know. The teacher’s job is to show his students how to learn. He teaches them how to read and how to think. So, much more is to be learned outside school by the students themselves.
It is always more important to know how to study by oneself than to memorize some facts or a formula. It is usually quite easy to learn a certain fact in history or a formula in mathematic s. But it is very difficult to use a formula in working out a maths problem. Great scientists, such as Einstein, Newton and Galileo didn’t get anything from school. But they were all so successful. They invented so many things for mankind.
The reason for their success is that they knew how to study. They read books that were not taught at school. They worked hard all their lives, wasting not a single moment. They would ask many questions as they read and they did thousands of experiments.
Above all, they knew how to use their brains.
19. Many people go to school for an education. But some others go to school for ______.

Cheating can happen in a lot of different ways. When people cheat, it’s not fair to other people, like the kids who studied for the test or who were the true winners of a game.
Many people like the action of cheating. It makes difficult things seem easy, like getting all the right answers on the test. But it doesn’t solve the problem of not knowing the material and it won’t help on the next test — unless the person cheats again.
Some people lose respect for cheaters and think less of them. The cheaters themselves may feel bad because they know they are not really earning that good grade. And, if they get caught cheating, they will be in trouble at school, and maybe at home, too.
Some kids cheat because they’re busy or lazy and they want to get good grades without spending the time studying. Other kids might feel like they can’t pass the test without cheating. Even when there seems to be a “good reason” for cheating, cheating isn’t a good idea.
If you were sick or upset about so mething the night before and couldn’t study, it would be better to talk with the teacher about this. And if you don’t have enough time to study for a test because of swim practice, you need to talk with your parents about how to balance swimming and school.
A kid who thinks cheating is the only way to pass a test needs to talk with the teacher and his or her parents so they can find some solutions together. Talking about these problems and working them out will feel better than cheating.
28. The author thinks that when kids cheat in class, _______.
A. it does harm to their health
B. teachers should punish them
C. it is unfair to other people
D. teachers shouldn’t stop them at once
29. We can learn from the passage______.
A. cheaters are oft en thought highly of
B. people show no respect for those who cheat
C. parents whose kids cheat are often in trouble
D. kids cheat in the test because of swim practice
30.In the passage those cheaters are advised to_______.
A. find good solutions instead of cheating
B.spend more time on school than on sports
C.try hard to be intelligent rather than lazy
D.ask their classmates for good methods of study

书面表达
Dear Andrew,
Very happy to hear from you and you’re wel come to study in our school for the next two months. As for the question about the transportation to and from school. I’d like to recommend you riding a bike.. Here are some reasons.
Firstly, riding a bike to and from school is very common among the students, for buying or repairing a bike doesn’t cost a lot. Secondly, parking a bike is easy and convenient in our school, no matter how busy the traffic could be. Actually, bike-riding is also a practical way to exercise and is environmentally---friendly. What you have to do is just to keep a proper speed while riding . Remember to lock it whenever necessary. In this way, you will feel it simple and relaxing to ride a bike here.
Hopefully, what I’ve mentioned above could be helpful and wish y ou a fun time i n
our school.
