Peak Cavern (The Devils Arse)
Located just west of Peveril, Peak Cavern is one of the most popular landmarks in Castleton. The Peak Cavern is also known by locals as the Devil's Arse, originally because of the allegedly flatulent-sounding noises that used to emanate from inside the cave according to Castleton locals. In 1880 the name of the cave was changed to Peak Cavern from the Devil’s Arse in order not to offend to Queen Victoria when she visited Castleton to watch a concert in the cave. Over recent years, the cave has been promoted by its owners using its traditional, more improper name.
Another popular route for hikers is the Limestone Way, which spans 50 miles (appr. 80 km) and provides visitors with the opportunity to see the famous White Peak. The area is protected due to its outstanding natural beauty and hosts some of the most beautiful towns and villages in the whole of England. The landscape of the park is both diverse and extensive, and includes moorland, hills and farmland. There are also a number of other points of interest available such as caverns. The most popular outdoor activities for those visiting the park consist of Hiking, Climbing, cycling, Mountain Biking and visiting a number of historical houses (such as Chatsworth House). The highest point in the Lake District is Kinder Scout which is 636 metres above sea level.

Peak District National Park
The Peak District is an upland area in central and northern England, lying mainly in northern Derbyshire, but also covering parts of Cheshire, Greater Manchester, Staffordshire, and South and West Yorkshire. An area of great diversity, it is conventionally split into the northern Dark Peak, where most of the moorland is found and whose geology is gritstone, and the southern White Peak, where most of the population lives and where the geology is mainly limestone-based.
One of the most popular pursuits for visitors to the Peak District is hiking. There are a number of public footpaths and bridleways which weave their way across the terrain. The most famous of these is the Pennine Way which is 268 (appr. 431 km) miles in length beginning at Edale. The Pennine Way passes through the North of the Park and extends all of the way to the Scottish border.
Castleton Caves
Castleton is home to four ‘show caves’ – essentially four old underground caves that have proved enormously popular with tourists due to their fascinating heritage and wonderfully interesting interior. They are called Peak Cavern (which is also affectionately known as The Devil’s Arse), Speedwell Cavern, Treak Cliff Cavern and Blue John Cavern. The four caves all offer different qualities, and are all a must see for any visitor to Castleton.

Peveril Castle was built for the purpose of overseeing the King’s Royal Forest of the Peak. The original structure was built from wood, but when wear and tear was evident the castle was re-built with stone around 1175, and this is essentially the building that you can see in Castleton today. A square keep with round headed windows was built around the same time, which still stands in Castleton to this day.
Founded in 1951 the Peak District was the first national Park in England. Although the name Peak District might suggest mountainous terrain this is not actually the case in reality. The Park spans an area of around 550 square miles (1424 square meters) and its terrain consists of rolling hills, farmland and moorland.
The village of Castleton has a long and captivating history, dating right back to before the place was even named. From approximately the 1100’s, Castleton was the centre of the Royal Forest of the Peak, becoming a market town around 100 years later. The Castleton village that is recognisable in modern times only truly began to come into fruition in the 11th century during the Norman period. After the infamous Battle of Hastings in 1066, William the Conqueror began to build castles the length and breadth of the country and eventually had one built in Castleton for his (allegedly illegitimate) son, William Peveril, in 1080. The castle was named Peveril Castle, the name Castleton was derived and the castle quickly became central to the Castleton’s outlook.
