She was working full-time, and did not want tomove away from her job and family to continue her education. Leanne liked that she was able to studywhenever and however much she wanted. But while the program met her needs at first, Leanne felt there were things she did not get fromstudying online. Later, she earned her undergraduate degree from a traditional, face-to-face studyprogram at Thomas Jefferson University.Leanne says physically being in a classroom helps build a strong connection between students andtheir professors. In some ways she liked taking control and leading her own studies. But many times, she also felt lost without that special connection. In addition, it may not be just a student's learning that suffers in a distance learning program. There is some concern about what future employers think about an online degree, too. Some employment specialists from Public Agenda, a nonprofit research organization, believe thatstudents in online programs learn less than those in traditional programs and online programs areeasier to complete. Some employers may have limited understanding of what is possible through an online program. However, until there are widely accepted standards for online programs as there are for traditionalones, crkical opinions will likely remain. Also, there appears to bc a barrier for online programs becoming more widely accepted. If morewell-known, high quality schools start offering such programs, employers will likely consider the twomethods as equal. But the high cost to create high quality online programs suggests this will not beeasy.Today, more students are choosing online college programs over traditional programs every year. But there is still a long way to go before online and traditional programs operate on the same level.24.

AElizabeth Blackwell was born in England in 1821, and moved to New York City when she was ten years old. One day she decided that she wanted to become a doctor. After writing many letters asking for admission(录取) to medical schools, she was finally accepted by a doctor in Philadelphia. She was so determined that she taught school and gave music lessons to get money for the cost of schooling. In 1849, after graduation from medical school. she decided to further her education in Paris. She wanted to be a surgeon(外科医师) , but a serious eye problem forced her to give up the idea.Upon returning to the United States, she found it difficult to start her own practice because she was a woman. New York CityBIf we were asked exactly what we were doing a year ago,we should probably have to say that we could not remember. But if we had kept a book and had written in it an account of what we did each day,we should be able to give an answer to the question. It is the same in history. Many things have been forgotten because we do not have any written account of them. Sometimes men did keep a record of the most important happenings in their country, but often it was destroyed by fire or in a war.Sometimes there was never any written record at all because the people of that time and place did not know how to write. For example,we know a good deal about the people who lived in China 4,000 years ago, because they could write and leave written records for those who lived after them. But we know almost nothing about the people who lived even 200 years ago in central Africa. Because they had not learned to write.Sometimes, of course, even if the people cannot write, they may know something of the past. They have heard about it from older people, and often songs and dances and stories have been made about the most important happenings, and these have been sung and acted and told for many generations. For most people are proud to tell what their fathers did in the past. This we may call “remembered history”.Some of it has now been written down. It is not so exact or so valuable to us as written history is,because words are much more easily changed when used again and again in speech than when copied in writing. But where there are no written records, such spoken stories are often very helpful.6. Which of the following ideas is not suggested in the passage?A.“Remembered history”,compared with written history,is less reliable B.Written records of the past play the most important role in our learning of the human history.C.A written account of our daily activities helps US to be able to answer many questions.D.Where there are no written records, there is no history.7.We know very little about the central Africa 200 years ago because ___ A.there was nothing worth being written down at that timeB. the people there ignored the importance of keeping a recordC.the written records were perhaps destroyed by a fireD.the people there did not know how to write8.“Remembered history” refers to ___.A.history based on a person’s ima ginationB. stories of important happenings passed down from mouth to mouthC. songs and dances about the most important eventsD. both B and C9.“Remembered history” is regarded as valuable only when ____.A. it is written downB. no written account is availableC.it proves to be timeD.people are interested in it10 .The passage suggests that we could have learned much more about our pastthan we do now if the ancient people had _____A.kept a written record of every past eventB. not burnt their written records in warsC.told exact stories of the most important happeningsD.made more songs and dancesCHave you ever wondered why birds sing? Maybe you thought that they were just happy. After all, you probably sing when you are happy. Some scientists believe that birds do sing some of the time just because they are happy. However, they sing most of the time for a very different reason. Their singing is actually a warning to other birds to stay out of their territory.Do you know wha t a “territory” is? A territory is an area that an animal, usually the male, claims (声称) as its own. Only he and his family are welcome there. No other families of the same species are welcome. Your house is your territory where only your family and friends are welcome. If a stranger should enter your territory and threaten you, you might shout. Probably this would be enough to frighten him away.If so, you have actually frightened the stranger away without having to fight him. A bird does the same thing. But he expects an outsider almost any time, especially at nesting (筑巢) season. So he is screaming all the time, whether he can see an outsider or not. This screaming is what we call a bird’s song, and it is usually enough to keep an outsider away.11.Some scientists believe that most of the time bird’s singing is actually ________.A.an expression of happinessB. a way of warningC. an expression of angerD. a way of greeting12.What is a bird’s “territory”?A. A place where families of other species are not accepted.B. A place where a bird may shout at the top of its voice.C.An area for which birds fight against each other.D.An area which a bird considers to be its own.13. Why do birds keep on singing at nesting season?A.Because they want to invite more friends.B.Because their singing helps frighten outsiders away.C.Because they want to find outsiders around.D.Because their singing helps get rid of their fears.14. How does the writer explain birds’ singing?A.By comparing birds with human beings.B. By reporting experiment results.C. By describing birds’ daily life.D.

To the Egyptians, green was a color that represented the hope and joy of spring, while for Muslims, it means heaven. Red is a symbol of good luck in many cultures. In China, children are given money in a red envelope to bring good fortune in the New Year. For many nations, blue is a symbol of protection and religious beliefs.Greek people often wear a blue necklace hoping to protect themselves against evils(灾祸).People’s choice of colors is also influenced by their bodies' reactions (反应)toward them. Green is said to be the most restful color. It has the ability to reduce pain and relax people both mentally and physically. People who work in green environment have been found to have fewer stomach aches.Red can cause a person’s blood pressure to rise and increase people’s appetites(食欲). Many decorators will include different shades of red in the restaurant. Similarly, many commercial websites will have a red “Buy Now” button because red is a color that easily catches a person’s eye.Blue is another calming color. Unlike red, blue can cause people to lose appetite. So if you want to eat less, some suggest that eating from blue plates can help. The next time you are deciding on what to wear or what color to decorate your room, think about the color carefully.9. To caus e a person’s blood pressure to rise.11. Which of the following would be the most proper title for the text?A. Colors and Human Beings.B. The Cultural Meaning of Color.C. Colors and Personal Experiences.D. The Meaning and Function of Color.DYou may have been told before not to be afraid of anything. Fear is often associated with weakness. Fear is something to be avoided. But that’s not true, according to Time For Kids magazine. Fear can be good for us. Fear tells us about danger. Without fear, we wouldn't know to run away from a tiger or step back from a cliff(悬崖).In a study published in the Justice Quarterly journal in August, researchers from Michigan State University said that a healthy fear of crime keeps teenagers away from potentially dangerous people, places, and activities. Fear makes us jump, scream and sweat. But interestingly, sometimes we make ourselves feel fear on purpose. Think about scary books and movies, and also the long lines for a scary roller coaster ride(过山车).Margee Kerr, a US sociologist, explained why to Time For Kids. Fear fills our brain with healthy chemicals, especially endorphins and dopamine, and these things create feelings of happiness and excite us, according to Kerr. In addition, when you’r e scared, your body produces a chemical which helps people bond with each other.“Watch people walking out of a haunted house(鬼屋), and you'll see lots of smiles and high fives(击掌),” Kerr told Time For Kids. That also explains why schools and companies organize challenging trips and physical activities to build up team spirit. People experience and deal with fear in different ways. If you happen to be a“coward” who gets scared easily, don’t worry. There is some evidence that being scared can help a person manage stressful situations.Kerr said that things like giving a report in front of your class or performing in a school play help build a sort of endurance(忍耐力)to fear that makes us more confident. “You become more comfortable with the physical experience of fear, and so you’re better able to work through it during tense situations, ” said Kerr.So learn to love your fear. It only grows when we forget how helpful our fear is trying to be.12. What’s the best title for the passage?A. Ways to build up team spirit.B. Different ways to deal with fear.C. Love your fear.D. Fear, a sign of weakness.13. Which of the following is True according to the passage?A. Experiencing fear helps us to build a sort of endurance to fear.B. People who get scared easily have no chances to get changed.C. Fear is harmful to our health.D. Fear is something to be avoided.14. The underlined phrase“bond with” is closest in meaning to .A. fight againstB. look down uponC. be more careful withD. get closer to15. Which of the following is Not mentioned to experience fear?A. Attend challenging trips or physical activities.B. Take some medicine containing endorphins and dopamine.C. Read scary books or see scary movies.D.
