A. This can affect your work.C. However, this should not discourage you.

e. 表示解释关系表示解释关系的词有:in other words, in fact, as a mater of fact, for example, for instance, actually, that is to say等;【2020年松江区一模卷】68. ________For instance, the printing and handling of money is expensive. Passage1UrbanizationUntil relatively recently, the vast majority of human beings lived and died without ever seeing a city. The first city was probably founded no more than5,500years ago.1_.In fact, nearly everyone lived on farms or in tiny rural(乡村的)villages. It was not until the20th century that Great Britain became the first urban society in history---a society in which the majority of people live in cities and do not farm for a living.Britain was only the beginning.2_.The process of urbanization---the migration(迁移)of people from the countryside to the city---was the result of modernization, which has rapidly transformed how people live and where they live.In1990,fewer than40%of Americans lived in urban areas.Today,over82%of Americans live in cities.Only about2%live on farms. The rest live in small towns.Large cities were impossible until agriculture became industrialized.Even in advanced agricultural societies. It took about ninety-five people on farms to feed five people in cities._3.Until modern times, those living in cities were mainly the ruling elite(精英)and the servants, laborers and professionals who served them.Cities survived by taxing farmers and were limited in size by the amount of surplus food that the rural population produced and by the ability to move this surplus from farm to city.Over the past two centuries, the Industrial Revolution has broken this balance between the city and the country.4_.Today,instead of needing ninety-five farmers to feed five city people, one American farmer is able to feed more than a hundred non-farmers.A.That kept cities very small.B.The effects of urban living on people should be considered.C.Soon many other industrial nations become urban societies.D.But even200years ago, only a few people could live in cities.E.Modernization drew people to the cities and made farmers more productive.F.Modern cities have destroyed social relations and the health of human beings. A.That kept cities very small.B.The effects of urban living on people should be considered.C.Soon many other industrial nations become urban societies.D.But even200years ago, only a few people could live in cities.E.Modernization drew people to the cities and made farmers more productive.F.Modern cities have destroyed social relations and the health of human beings.1,前一段讲解了城市的早期起源,最后一句“第一座城市在5,500年之前发现的,”横线后一句用“事实上,几乎每个人都住在农场里或者小的乡村”链接,所以表示转折链接,所以选D(语义层次——转折关系)2,前一句表示“英国仅仅是个开始”,后句“城市化过程是现代化的结果”。

Even when taking our leave it seems we English are vicitims of some strange deficiencies in our valedictory vocabulary. The standard term 'Goodbye' is both too formal and too final. It maybe just the job for usher" ing someone out of your life altogether ; but most leave-takings-for better or worse-are temporary affairs. perhaps in an attempt to escape implications of finality, many people now say (Bye bye' instead; others try to make this particularly nauseating bit of baby-talk more acceptable by shortening it to "Bye".2、段中主题句。

His hope is that one day he will create groups of beasts that can “live” on the beaches and survive without human interaction.Sculpture with a Life of Its OwnThere is a new type of animal that has beenwalking along the beaches since the 1990s. Theyare called Strandbeest, which is Dutch for beachbeast. _______67_______ They are creationsof Dutch artist Theo Jansen, and they can move themselves using nothing more than the power of the wind. Jansen has even created a way for his beasts to “eat” the air, and store its power by pressurizing bottles. This stored power also allows the sculptures to detect when they have entered the water and change their direction. He has even devised a method for them to stop themselves in the sand if a storm is approaching! The beauty of these creations is that they have no electronic parts, yet they have a basic logic system that helps them walk in their habitat. Jansen’s creations look alive as they move with a steady, even motion on the hard sand. Every year, he improves his designs. ________68________Jansen’s kinetic sculptures use an innovative design to transform simple motions into amazing works of art. The Strandbeests have a mechanical linkage that creates a walking motion using triangles The sculptures are large but have a delicate appearance. The fascinating combinations of thin tubes and fine fin-like (像鳍一样的) sails moving in the breeze create a striking image. One could easily believe they are some sort of strange lifeform walking along the beach. _______69________ He created a beast, named Animaris Rhinoceros Lignatus, which was made out of wood and weighed 250 kilograms.________70________ There are many artists that use motion to create spectacular visual effects. Some are large pieces, but many can sit on a desk or hang on a wall. However, theyall have one thing in common: you can’t appreciate their artistry until you see them move. Jansen also sells mini versions of some of his beasts. They come in boxes that you can assemble without any special tools. You, too, can try your hand at creating kinetic art!答案67.A 68.F 69. B 70. A Useful Tool for Music LoversWith the development and expansion of the Internet, many hobbies and interests of modern people have gained a new dimension. The Internet allows enthusiasts to unite to share their excitement about trends, to communicate and share experiences. Specialized websites provide users with even more information about their subjects of interest and help discover new boundaries of their passions. This refers to movies, arts, modeling, programming, literature, and music as well. One can hardly find a person who would not be listening to music on the way to work, at home, or elsewhere. (67)______________________.One such website is Last.fm: a mix of a social network and an Internet-radio that tracks down the music its users listen to. (68)______________________. Besides, it has a number of advantages compared to other sources providing similar services. The design of Last.fm gives a welcoming impression, though some might find it too simple. The site is displayed in red tones, with the possibility of switching it to a black skin and, despite the quantity ofinformation, is easy to understand and navigate. Users can also decorate their profiles with pictures of themselves, all kinds of badges, diagrams, tag clouds, and statistics relating to music. The availability of multiple functions also speaks in favor of Last.fm. One of its significant advantages over many other musical websites is the function of scrobbling (歌曲记录), which means tracking down the music one had been listening to.(69)______________________. With its aid, Last.fm searches for people with similar musical preferences and shows one a list of those whose interests match to some extent. These people are called neighbors and the idea is that they can get familiar with the fans of their favorite kind of music and, most likely, make new friends. The information about upcoming events nearby, as well as recommendations given about new music that a user might like are also gathered and introduced by the means of scrobbling. If a person listens to one or two bands on a consistent basis, the website will display a few new artists that play in a similar genre, including new ones, so that a user can be in touch with the latest trends within their musical interests.(70)______________________. However, there is a serious drawback connected to it. The fact is that the majority of free tracks and albums are available only to citizens of the USA, Germany, and Great Britain, while in other countries, users can only listen to short introductory samples. And yet those lucky ones from the places mentioned before can listen to one track online up to five times a day. Besides, the website had recently changed its policy towards monetization and reduced the number of free services. Last.fm also works as a kind of musical Wikipedia, providing users with biographies of bands, or actual musicians. There is hardly a need to mention that musicians can also benefit from using the resource, presenting information about themselves and involving fans. If you want to make sure that you understand this story as fully as possible, you might consider printing the article and reading it on paper. That is one of the findings of a recent study of research done on the differences between paper and screen reading.Virginia Clinton, a professor of Education, Health and Behavior at the University of North Dakota, carried out the research examination. She found what she called a “small but significant” difference in reading text from screen versus paper.Clinton’s examination found that reading from paper generally led to better understanding and impr oved a person’s performance on tests connected to the reading material. And, she found no major differences in reading speed between the two. (67) _________________________Such differences were notable only when the reading materials were expositive texts-- or explanatory and based on fact. Clinton said she found no major difference when it came to narrative, fictional texts.Clinton also found that paper readers usually have a higher recognition of how well they have understood a text than screen readers. This skill is called metacognition. (68) ________________ “Metacognition” simply means thinking about one’s own thinking.Clinton and other researchers have found screen readers often believe they understand a text better than they really do. And, they are more likely than paper readers to overestimate how well they would do on a test of the materials they have read. She said, “We think that we’re reading the story or the book better than we actually are. We think we understand what we are reading bett er than how we are actually reading.”Yet, this inflated sense of understanding, or overconfidence, is especially common among screen readers. There are many possible reasons for such findings. Overconfidence of screen readers, for example, could be the result of a distracted, less focused mind. (69) _________________ Research shows the majority of people -- of all ages -- prefer reading from paper. But, if someone prefers screen reading to paper reading, that person’s understanding of the material is not likely to suffer.Clinton said, “If you are enjoying the reading process, you’re going to be more involved. You’re going to be paying better attention. Preferences are a key issue here.”(70) ________________________ “If you are reading from paper, your mind thinks, ‘This is something important. I need to pay attention to it’,” Clinton said.Although her findings may support paper reading over screen reading, Clinton says she does not believe screen reading should be avoided.Instead, she points to new and developing tools that can be used to improve a screen reader’s understanding and focus.答案67-70 CFDA2021青浦一模against the viruses.Guard against FluVaccination (接种疫苗) is among the most effective ways to help us prevent diseases. For viruses that don't change too much —the measles virus(麻疹) for example—getting vaccinated is a once-and-for-all method to prevent you from becoming infected with the virus. If you had two measles vaccines when you were a child, you will be protected for life._____67_____ It generally peaks between December and February. Flu vaccines cannot protect us in the long run. There is no permanent immunity, according to Theodore Strange, associate medical director at Staten Island University Hospital in New York. _____68_____Apart from a person's immune protection from flu vaccination declining over time, flu viruses are also constantly changing. _____69_____ To develop effective flu vaccines, over 100 national influenza(流感) centers around the world conduct year-round observation for influenza. Researchers will test thousands of influenza virus samples from patients, according to US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The World Health Organization also suggests three or four influenza viruses that are most likely to spread among people during the upcoming flu season. But even when a vaccine is developed, getting it can prove to be difficult, as demand tends to exceed supply._____70_____ The availability of the flu vaccine supply does not always coincide with peak demand. So,scientists prioritize access to the vaccination. The CDC recommends key populations, such as medical staff, teachers, students, children and those aged 60 and above, receive flu vaccines. A. Don’t get discouraged. The Art of Man-on-the-Street InterviewsHave you ever observed the busy people of the street? Do they arouse your infinite thinking? The man-on-the-street interview may become a popular word because it is new. The man-on-the-street interview is an interview in which a reporter hits the streets with a cameraman to interview people on the spot. (67) ______________ But with these tips, your first man-on-the-street interview experience can be easy. When your boss or professor sends you out to do man-on-the-street interviews for a story, think about the topic and develop a list of about ten general questions relating to it. For example, if your topic is about environmental problems in America, you might ask, “Why do you think environmental protection is important in America?” (68) ______________ Hit the streets with confidence. As you approach peopl e, be polite. Say, “Excuse me, I work for a certain well-known TV or radio station, and I was wondering if you could share your opinion about this topic.” This is a quick way to get people to warm up to you.(69)______________ If someone tells you she is not interested, move on to the next person. Keep in mind that not everyone wants to be interviewed, so don’t get hung up on it. Limit your time. Each interview that you get on the street shouldn’t be longer than ten minutes. As soon as you get the answer you need, move on to the next person. Make sure that as you go from interview to interview, you are getting a variety of answers. A safe number of interviews to conduct is about six to ten. (70) ______________(70)For the media, the ability to increase ratings and influence may be the only meaning they want. In fact, different people have different views towards the interview. Someone says this should be the product of the fast- food information age. Nonverbal communication is the process of sending and receiving messages without using words, either spoken or written. Similar to the way that italicizing (斜体) emphasizes written language, nonverbal behavior may emphasize parts of a verbal message.(67) ______ For instance, in “The Advancement of Learning” (1605), Francis Bacon observed that “the features of the body do r eveal the tendency and inclination of the mind in general, but the motions of the facial expressions and parts do not only so, but do further reveal the present humour and state of the mind and will.” Psychologists Paul Ekman and Wallace Friesen (1969), in discussing the interdependence that exists between nonverbal and verbal messages, identified six important ways that nonverbal communication directly affects our verbal messages. First, we can use nonverbal signals to emphasize our words. (68) ______ Second, our nonverbal behavior can repeat what we say. We can say yes to someone while nodding our head. Third, nonverbal signals can substitute for words. Often, there isn’t much need to put things in words. A simple gesture is enough. Fourth, we can use nonverbal signals to regulate speech. (69) ______ Fifth, nonverbal messages sometimes contradict (与…矛盾) what we say. A friend tells us she had a great time at the beach, but we’re not sure because her voice is flat and her face lacks emotion. (70) ______ Being upset could mean we feel angry, depressed, disappointed, or just a bit on edge. Nonverbal signals can help to make clear thewords we use and reveal the true nature of our feelings. Are You a Prisoner of Perfection?Do you struggle for a goal that is beyond your reach? Do you hold an idealized vision that is impossible to realize? Are you setting yourself up for failure and sh ame when you can’t achieve the unachievable? 67____________Shame and fear are often the hidden drives of perfection. We believe that if we fashion a perfectly polished personality, flash our intelligence, and perfect our humour, then no one can hurt us w ith criticism and we’ll win respect and approval. For the majority of us, the addiction to staying perfect protects us from any sign of being imperfect. 68____________ We fear that showing shortcomings will expose us to the accusation that we’re weak. We stick to a desire to be right, perfect, and polished, even when it’s obvious that the emperor has no clothes.Perfectionism keeps us leaning toward the future. We’re constantly evaluating ourselves in order to be better. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to do our best and self-correctingalong the way. 69____________ We get painfully self-conscious and take ourselves too serious. Sadly, the simple pleasure of enjoying the moment and being ourselves are taken away from us.A cure to perfectionism is to make room for our human shortcomings. We realize that failing at any enterprise doesn’t mean that we are a failure. Without failures, we’ll never learn from our mistakes; we’ll never move forward in our lives. Those who succeed have made countless mistakes. 70____________ Being human, perfection is impossible. By accepting ourselves as we are and doing our best, we begin to rid of the shame that drives perfectionism.答案67.F 68. D 69.B 70. A. He believed it's time to change marine parks to be more humane and to make more money at the same time.Entrepreneurs in New Zealand are working with America designers to develop robotic dolphins that look almost exactly the same as real dolphins.________67________ A robotic dolphin that can nod an answer to a child. It might not sound attractive or may even sound worrying, but as marine parks around the world are under pressure to stop using real whales and dolphins, the creatures are an attractive alternative, their creators say."Marine parks have been making less money for more ten years because many people think the parks are cruel and because of the cost of live animals, but people still really to learn about and experience these animals," said Roger Holzberg, a California designer of the life-size robot bottle-nose dolphins. ________68________.We have to persuade marine park owners that these dolphins can make them money, even more money than live animals," Holzberg said. ________69________ On average, bottle-nose dolphins live for less than 20 years in captivity but 30 to 50 years in the wild.Melanie Langlotz, one of the entrepreneurs behind the project, has a background in reality games. "It became clear that any large aquarium, in order to compete with any other aquarium, would need to have all the big animals on display, such as dolphins and sharks," she said. "The bigger, the better." ________70________ Finally, the group decided to use robotic animals instead of live ones. The sample robotic dolphin, Langlotz said, weights more than 270kg. A test audience was unable to guess the dolphin was not real, she added. Animal rights supporters also welcomed the change, hoping robotic dolphins would replace real ones in marine parks worldwide.答案67-70 BFCA2021浦东新区一模Late in January Shen Yinjing, a therapist in Shanghai, volunteered to help distressed people in the coronavirus-stricken city of Wuhan by offering counselling over the phone or by text. By continuing to work and staying socially engaged, the boomers, in their new appearance as the young old, will change the world. The yold are more numerous, healthier and wealthier than previous generations of seniors.(67)________________ Of the 3.7 years of increased life expectancy in rich countries between 2000 and 2015, says the WHO, 3.2 years were enjoyed in good health. Working is one of the factors that are helping people stay healthy longer. A German study found that people who remain at work after the normal retirement age manage to slow the cognitive (认知的) decline. The yold are also better off, while the wealth of all other age groups declined. The yold are challenging the traditional expectations of the retired in many aspects. They won’t wear indoor shoes and look after the grandchildren. (68)________________ They also spend much more, when taking a foreign holiday, than younger adults, so they are vital to the tourism industry. And, because of the importance of pensions, the yold are transforming insurance companies from passive distributors of fixed annuities(年金) to financial service providers for customers who want to manage their pension pots more actively.(69)________________ They find that older workers have, if anything, slightly above-average productivity and that teams of workers from multiple generations are the most productive of all. Societies should be better off because public spending on health and pensions should be lower than expected, as people work longer and need less medical care.Today, some big things will have to change, under pressure from the yold themselves. The most important is public attitudes towards older people and in particular the expectation that 60-somethings ought to quietly retire into the background. (67)___________ Luckily, one of the most efficient and most popular time management techniques is also one of the world's simplest—the Pomodoro Technique. The Pomodoro Technique was developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s.(68)___________ Each block is known as a pomodoro, the Italian word for “tomato.” Cirillo named the system after the tomato-shaped kitchen timer that he used to track his work time when he was studying as a university student. He developed a habit of doing short blocks of work followed by resting periods. He realized this method could help him work with timeinstead of struggling against it.In 2006, Cirillo published his Pomodoro Technique manual for people to download free of charge. The Pomodoro technique can be applied in almost all parts of our life. It was built around a handful of important steps. First, choose a task that you’d like to get done.(69) ___________ What matters is that you are ready to give it your full attention.Next, set a timer for 25 minutes. Try to spend the full 25 minutes with your complete attention on the task. Then, when the timer goes off, take a five-minute break. Sit back, have a drink, go for a short walk, or do something else that is not work-related. Once you have completed four of these 30-minute cycles, treat yourself to a longer break that lasts 15 to 30 minutes.(70)___________After trying the Pomodoro Technique, you may want to experiment a little. Some people have found that 90-minute blocks work best, while others might perform better with more flexible periods. It varies from person to person. He insiste d that “the water should be actually boiling at the moment of impact, which means that one should keep it on the flame while one pours”._____67_____ “Some people add that one should only use water that has been freshly brought to the boil, but I have neve r noticed that it makes any difference,” he went on to state. However, on that point at least, it seems he was wrong. William Gorman, one of Britain’s leading tea experts, has now put forward that the water used for making a cup of tea should never be boil ed more than once. “Usually when people’s tea goes cold they reboil the kettle and make another cup. _____68_____ You need freshly drawn water for a good cup because reboiling it takes all the oxygen and nitrogen out of it, ruining its layered flavor.”Besides, Mr. Gorman advocates another practice of making tea, one that Orwell would surely have protested. Mr. Gorman said, “_____69_____ When you microwave tea, all you’re doing is just moving the molecules around and getting it back up to a decent temperature. It is not impacting the flavor at all.”_____70_____ In some countries teapots are fitted with little dangling baskets under the spout, to catch the stray leaves, which are supposed to be harmful. Actually one can swallow tea-leaves in considerable quantities without ill effect, and if the tea is not loose in the pot, it never infuses properly. They agree by doing this, you actually risk losing a good cup of tea.答案67-70 CBFD2021金山一模How to Leave Work at WorkSome jobs have very clear lines between when you’re “on” and when you’re “off,” while in others the lines are vague—or potentially nonexistent. (67)_________________ As a time management coach, I’ve found these three steps can help. I encourag e you to challenge yourself to gradually implement these changes and see how much you can leave your work at work—both physically and mentally—in 2020.Step 1: Define “After Hours”If you have a traditional 9-to-5 job, your hours are set for you. (68)_________________ If your employer has a certain number of hours that you’re expected to work each week, start by seeing how to fit those hours around your fixed personal commitments, like taking your kids to school or extracurricular activities. When do you need to start and stop to put in the proper work time?Step 2: Have Mental ClarityNext, make sure you have mental clarity on what needs to get done and when you will complete it. This includes having a place where you write down the many tasks that you need to do, whether that’s in a notebook, a task management app, a project management system, or in your calendar. (69)_________________ Then once you have this list, plan out your work. This planning reduce anxiety that something will fall through the cracks or that you’ll miss a deadline. The final part of increasing your mental clarity is to have an end-of-workday wrap-up.Step 3: Get Work Done at WorkIt may seem crazy to say this, but I want to encourage you to give yourself permission to do work at work. For many, they perceive “real work” as something they reserve for post-5 or 6 pm, after everyone else has left the office or after they’ve tucked their kids in bed for the night. (70)_________________ But if you want to stop feeling distracted by work after hours, you need to actually do your work during the day.As individuals, we need a mental break to do our best work, and taking time for ourselves without the distraction of work can help us become our best selves. I can’t guarantee that。

Without a good credit score and history, the experts say, it's more difficult qualify for a mortgage(按揭)or a car loan-and more expensive if you're approved for a loan, too, because you won't get the best interest rates. In many states, bad credit can even raise your insurance payments, cost you a rental apartment, or make it harder to get hired. _______67________First off, there are several credit scores out there. Whileit's important to cultivate your credit scores by using credit responsibly, your FICO credit score may not be the same as what VantageScore reports, and lenders may use a different one entirely, so focusing on one score can be a fruitless exercise. More important as financial reporter Dave Ramsey notes on his blog, your credit score is not a measure of your overall financial health. He writes:"________68________"FICO, the most popular credit-scoring agency, users several weighted factors to determine your credit score, including payment history (35 percent), amounts owed (30 percent), length of credit history (15 percent), new credit (10 percent), and credit mix (10 percent).________69________ My husband and I enjoyed steady credit scores above 820 for a while. That new car smell comes from a mixture of chemicals, some of which can be highlypoisonous.________67________Many of these contain volatile (挥发性的) organic compounds (VOCs), some of which can be deadly in sufficient quantities. Others are just bad for you.“It’s a chemical cocktail made up of lots of poisonous substances,”said Jeff Gearhart, Research Director of theEcology Center in the US state of Michigan. The EcologyCenter has been monitoring and testing chemical levels in the inside of the car for years, and has noted some improvement. But Gearhart says there is still work to be done.“There are over 200 chemical compounds found in vehicles,”he said. “Since these chemicals are not regulated, consumers have no way of knowing the dangers they face.”________68________ Immediate symptoms can range froma sore throat to headaches, dizziness, etc., depending on thesensitivity of an individual.According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, continued exposure to some of these can lead to reproductive impacts and damage to some organs and central nervous system—or even cancer.________69________The danger is the greatest when the car is new, and that new car smell is most noticeable.________70________It is the release of chemical vapors, which leads to the smell. Heat from a vehicle left in the sun can make matters worse, and speed up the chemical reaction. They also spend plenty of time trying to hide their feelings, intentions or nature.________68________In America facial recognition is used by churches to track worshippers’attendance; in Britain, by retailers to spot past shoplifters. This year Welsh police used it to arrest a suspect outside a football game. In China it confirms the identities of ride-hailing drivers, permits tourists to enter attractions and lets people pay for things with a smile. Apple’s new iPhone is expected to use it to unlock the homescreen.Set against human skills, such applications might seem enhansive. Some breakthroughs, such as flight or the internet, obviously transform human abilities.________69________Although faces are peculiar to individuals, they are also public, so technology does not, at first sight, intrude on something that is private. And yet the ability to record, store and analyse images of faces cheaply, quickly and on a vast scale promises one day to bring about fundamental changes to notions of privacy, fairness and trust.________70________Masking true feelings helps fix the wheels of daily life. If your partner can spot every prohibited yawn, and your boss every hint of annoyance, marriages and working relationships will be more truthful, but less harmonious. Universally accepted standards can only have a significant beneficial effect on the incidence of accidents.

A.It doesn't take an environmentalist to realize that this practice is not sustainable.B.What do you think of this phenomenon?C.Then he pressed them into square pieces and coated them with something sticky.D.Hopefully,such issues could be resolved as soon as possible.E.But what if we could recycle them?F.Sometimes,as with chopsticks, those materials are right under our very noses. You're enjoying a delicious bowl of noodles or your favorite rice dish, chatting with your friends.Being the responsible person that you are, when you're finished you clean up your table and throw away your garbage, including your disposable(一次性的)chopsticks. These chopsticks wind up in a landfill along with other chopsticks around the globe.67Turns out we can.For those consuming Asian food, using chopsticks as eating tools is almost second nature. It has been estimated that 20to33percent of the world's population uses chopsticks on a daily basis. Not all of those are disposable, but no doubt many are.Estimates indicate that up to80billion disposable chopsticks are used worldwide every year.68 Enter Felix Bock,a doctoral student at the time in the forestry program at the University of British Columbia, Canada.Bock was eager to find a way to recycle wood from construction projects, and he had a particular interest in bamboo. One day he found a drawer in his girlfriend's house filled with disposable bamboo chopsticks, and an idea began to form in his mind.Bock's smart idea was to give a second life to disposable chopsticks by making them into home decorations. He tried to convince restaurant owners to install recycling bins in their restaurants. He also designed a method to clean and sanitize(消毒)the chopsticks so that they could be reused.69The square pieces were then artistically arranged into household and office products.Bock's company, called ChopValue, has repurposed chopsticks into wall decorations, desktops, cutting boards and even table games such as dominoes(多米诺骨牌).Since2016when the company was founded,ChopValue has rescued billions of chopsticks from landfills.Instead of an economy based on the typical take-make-dispose model,ChopValue seeks to create one that transforms waste into a usable resource.Bock states in an interview with Global Shakers,"Frankly,I'm frustrated by everyone trying to be sustainable when they are looking away from the visible things that we can do immediately with the materials right in front of us."70A.It isn’t just about removing the garbage from the ocean’s surface.B.Hopefully,they can be a big part of the solution to ocean pollution.C.This small robot gathers up everything it encounters, including gasoline and oil.D.For larger, more open areas,a much larger robot called the Interceptor has a similar function.E.If all goes well, they’re hoping to expand the number of robots and take the technology to other waterways in needof cleanup.F.Cleaning up trash that litters the ocean is good, but to keep the oceans clean, new garbage must be stopped fromgetting there.Trash-Eating RobotsIt has become common knowledge that our oceans are filled with garbage.Broken objects, used plastic bottles and so on fill our beaches and cover the ocean floor, doing immense damage to ocean creatures. Many individuals and organizations are working to remove this garbage and recent technological developments have given them a new tool to do so:trash-eating robots.Robots of various shapes have been designed to collect garbage that they find floating in the ocean. For example, the French company IADYS has developed what it calls the jellyfishbot.67The jellyfishbot is remotely controlled and can clean up to1,000square meters per hour.It contains a net that can hold up to30liters.The jellyfishbots’small size and ability to be easily controlled make them ideal for cleaning up crowded areas such as ports.68Designed for use on rivers, the Interceptor looks like a boat with a conveyor belt that picks up trash.A shallow barrier attached to the Interceptor guides floating trash to the conveyor belt, but fish can swim under it safely. Once a sensor indicates that the dustbins are full, the Interceptor automatically sends a text message to onshore operators. These operators collect and empty the dustbins, sending the garbage to local waste management facilities. Most of the garbage in the oceans comes down rivers.69Hence the Interceptor is used to stop pollution before it enters the ocean. The Interceptor is completely solar-powered and operates on its own, which minimizes the need for human involvement.Robots are able to clean up large amounts of garbage without humans struggling with beach cleanup by hand.70A.Their long-lasting relationships are important for survival in the wild.B.He teamed up with Fiona McCully,a scientist in animal behaviour.C.The scientists conclude that it’s important to keep flamingos in a large flock.D.According to a recent study,so do flamingos.E.This avoidance may serve to prevent the fights.F.New research shows that flamingos with brighter colors tend to be more aggressive.Flamingos(火烈鸟)make long friendshipsWhen it comes to making friends, humans often seek people with similar interests and personalities.____67____. The long-legged birds can form friendships that last for years, and they depend on their friends for support when they fall out with rivals.Scientist Dr Paul Rose had already spotted that flamingos seemed to form narrow exclusive circles.____68____.To find out why flamingos befriend some but not others, they studied both Chilean and Caribbean flamingos living in a nature reserve in Gloucestershire,England. Each bird wore a ring around one leg with a unique code to tell them apart.McCully spent months studying their behaviour and built a personality profile for each flamingo. She found that confident, aggressive flamingos walked proudly around in their friendship groups, while the quieter birds carefully avoid those individuals.____69____.McCully and Rose found that for the Caribbean birds, personality seemed to matter more in friendships than it did for Chilean flamingos.Caribbean birds were more likely to defend their friends and the confident ones had much larger social groups than the quieter birds. The researchers found this surprising because in many ways, including body shape and how they search for food in the wild, the two species are very similar.____70____.In that case, all personality types are represented and each flamingo has the chance to find a like-minded friend.McCully and Rose said,“If humans require friendships to be happy,is it really such a great leap to think that flamingos might need the same?”A.Although these are all animals that can act people-like,the presence of these cells does not mean that the animalshave feelings.B.Anyone who claims to know what animals feel doesn’t have science on their side.C.In recent experiments, dogs have shown that they know to follow a human’s pointed finger to find a food treat.D.Many people think that empathy is a special emotion only humans show.E.Other experiments have cast doubt that animal behavior can reliably signify an underlying feeling.F.This illustrates the difficulty in accurately interpreting animal behavior as a marker of human-like feelings.Do animals have feelings?People often assign feelings to animals. That zoo polar bear’s vacant stare must mean he’s sad.The uh-oh expression a dog flashes after knocking over the garbage indicates shame. But scientists haven’t determined whether these human-like expressions really mean anything. After all,it’s very difficult to read a dog’s mind.Scientists believe that certain brain cells in humans called spindle cells(棱形细胞)are responsible for human social behavior and the interplay between thoughts and feelings.Studies have revealed that chimpanzee, dolphin and whale brains also possess spindle cells.67Even animals that don’t have spindle cells, such as dogs, have shown behaviors that can suggest a human-like social sense.68Scientists report that this shows dogs are sensitive to human social cues and are able to correctly interpret them.Still, this only proves that dogs know how to find food, not that they have feelings.Observations of apes have also revealed behavior that appears to represent various human-like desires. In some tests, chimpanzees demonstrate what looks like altruism(利他主义)helping their own kind and even other species without the expectation of a reward.69In a recent study,a Barnard College researcher tested dogs to see if their guilty looks were linked to actual bad behavior.Dogs were tempted with a treat and told by their owners not to eat it.The dog’s owners weren’t allowed to see whether their pets had eaten the treat or not,but were told either that they did or that they didn’t,and were then instructed to scold the dogs that disobeyed. The experimenters noted that scolded dogs showed a guilty look whether or not they had actually done wrong.70A guilty look suggests a feeling of guilt in a human but not necessarily in a dog, according to the Barnard research.Similarly, even apparent empathy(共情)behavior might not actually mean these feelings are present in the brains of animals.A.The technology isn’t always misused.B.It also suggests that deepfake technology is now at a turning point.C.The technology is moving so fast that lawmakers will likely always fall behind.D.That is why I believe we are going to have to rely on technology to protect us from a problem it helpedcreate.E.A better approach with a longer time horizon is media provenance systems to confirm the origins ofimages and videos.F.To be effective in practice, such systems would have to be widely adopted by all content creators, which will take time.Deepfake technology is now a threat to everyoneLast October,MIT Prof.Sinan Aral warned his Twitter followers that he had discovered a video of himself that he hadn’t recorded supporting an investment fund’s stock-trading algorithm(算法).In reality,it wasn’t Prof.Aral in the video, but an artificial-intelligence creation in his likeness,or what is known as a highly persuasive“deepfake.”It is striking that scammer s(诈骗犯)targeted Prof.Aral, considering he is a leading expert on the study of misinformation online.__67__Thanks to a number of free deepfake apps that are just a click away, anyone can become a victim of such a scam. The term deepfake has come to mean the use of AI to create fake media in which someone appears to be doing or saying what in reality they haven’t done or said.__68__But positive use cases are likely to be overshadowed in coming years by the technology’s potential role in financial scam, identity theft, etc.Another big challenge is that in an online world where people can upload content of unknown names,it can be difficult to find the individuals behind deepfakes.__69__One such solution is to detect deepfakes through machine-learning methods. While these detectors can be successful in the short term, people looking to avoid such systems will likely just respond with better technology, creating a continuing and expensive cat-and-mouse game.__70__While lawmaking eventually may offer protection against deepfakes,I believe the market could be quicker—provided we,as consumers and citizens,care.A.Bedtime rituals can also help you reduce anxiety.B.For adults, bedtime rituals typically last30minutes to an hour.C.But engaging in some bedtime activities could actually help you sleep better.D.Then when the time comes to fall asleep, you’ll be ready.E.There’s no fixed format for the perfect bedtime ritual.F.Evidence indicates that people who read a book in bed have better sleep quality.Bedtime RitualsAt the end of a long day,you might want to collapse in front of the TV and watch an episode of your favorite show. _____________67_____________Settling down with a cup of lemon tea or reading a book can tell your body it’s time to sleep. If you turn these activities into a ritual—that is,if you do them every night around the same time—you will be all the more likely to get the rest you need.A bedtime ritual is important not only because it prepares you for sleep but also because it helps establish healthy sleep habits. If your current habits don’t support good sleep,a bedtime ritual can help you make necessary changes. _____________68_____________Worry can make it hard to fall asleep at night, but for some people, anxiety at bedtime is common.Rituals can provide comfort by offering predictability and structure. Some rituals, such as journaling, might also relieve anxiety by giving the writer a fresh perspective or sense of meaning._____________69_____________Consider trying several bedtime rituals before settling on a consistent routine. What’s important is figuring out what works for you.Start out with two or three activities according to your needs and preferences. If you enjoy exercise and movement, try yoga or gentle stretching. If you find comfort in order, create a to-do list for the next day.If classical music calms you, turn on some Bach or Mozart enjoying a bath.Whether your bedtime ritual takes place in bed or somewhere else, make sure your environment is relaxing.Wear comfortable clothes or pajamas, curl up(蜷曲)under a cozy blanket, and keep the lights low. _____________70_____________A.Tailor Vitamin C intake to your weight.B.The subjects who couldn’t perform this had a higher risk of death.C.Vitamin C supplements are always safe and effective for everyone.D.Regular exercise can improve your balance and reduce the risk of falls.E.Both are harmless and don’t require treatment unless their appearance is an issue.F.But these products can contain a large amount of salicylic acid(水杨酸)and could leave you with permanentscars.News From TheWorld of MedicineThe balance challengeCan you stand on one leg for ten seconds? This question could help doctors assess the overall health of their middle-aged and older patients, argues a Brazilian-led study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.(67) ____________________During a follow-up period of seven years, the researchers drew the above conclusion after accounting for basic factors like age and sex.Besides causing falls, poor balance can also signal underlying medical issues, such as declining eyesight or nerve damage caused by diabetes(糖尿病).Much like grasp strength and walking speed, balancing ability doesn’t tell the whole story of your health, but it’s a useful clue.Don’t remove skin tags and moles yourself. Two of the most common types of skin spots among adults are dark spots known as moles and the growths known as skin tags.(68)____________________In some places,mole-and skin-tag removal kits are sold for home use.(69)____________________US FDA recently issued a warning about these kits after receiving reports about consumers who had injured themselves. You’re better off visiting a dermatologist, who are experts in treating skin diseases.Plus, they can perform the all-important screening for skin cancer.(70)____________________Researchers from New Zealand recommend a60-kilogram person consume110milligrams of vitamin C per day through a balanced diet, while someone weighing90kilograms needs140milligrams.That is to say, when taking vitamin C,it’s best to take your weight into account.Eating foods like oranges—which contain on average70milligrams of vitamin C each—can really help.A.The frustration about such shifting wage payment has added new wrinkles to the controversy.B.The diversity of tipping channels somewhat eases the conflicts in deciding the amount of tips.C.No workers should have their livelihood depend on their customers’mercy.D.The popularity of digital point-of-sale systems has also meant consumers are being asked to tip more frequently.E.Tipping,against many people’s wills, establishes a new customer-server relationship.F.It’s believed that tipping is the ultimate profit-sharing plan.Tipping, customers paying service workers, usually at restaurants, for services they receive, has been a regular part of American culture for well over a century, but the emergence of new technology and shifting expectations have shaken long-standing norms around the practice. That uncertainty, together with the pressure it can often create, has left some consumers feeling exhausted by the frequency with which they’re forced to decide which workers to tip and how much.A big reason for the growth of what is being called“tip tiredness”is the increasing presence of digital payment systems, which have replaced traditional cash registers at most businesses.Suddenly, rather than being given the chance to drop a dollar in a tip jar, customers are confronted with a tablet.___67___They have to tip for services they’d never considered tipping for in the past.Tipping also makes labor laws more complicated. In all but a handful of states, employers are allowed to pay tipped workers below minimum wage.In some cases, the standard is as low as$2.13per hour,as long as workers make enough in tips to earn the equivalent of minimum wage.___68___Many people are debating over whether tipping system need a repair—or even should be cancelled altogether. They say tipping needs to be eliminated and replaced by a fair wage for all service workers. The tipping practice increases the possibility that employees can’t get what they deserve.___69___ In many cases, customers’tip amounts are largely guided by factors other than quality of the service they receive, which makes the situation even worse. However, defenders of the current arrangement say it’s still the best option.___70___It provides a chance for workers to have more control over their financial welfare. If a restaurant is doing well because it’s safely operated, properly managed and delivers great food, customers will usually tip.And when that happens, everyone–from the wait staff to the dishwashers–can share in the business’s success.A.Science has never had much influence on these decisions.B.There is no single age at which the teenage brain becomes an adult brain.C.However,neuroscience findings prove to be helpful in making a new boundary.D.Child growth pattens differ and how cultures understand child growth is so different.E.Some people think this knowledge can help us rethink where we draw legal boundaries between kids and adults.F.This discovery may well indicate that neuroscience can help us better understand the interrelationship among different ages.Neuroscientists(神经科学家)now know that brain maturation(成熟)occurs far later than previously thought. Great changes in brain are still taking place during young adulthood, especially in the regions of decision making, reasoning, comparing risk and reward, etc.Indeed, some brain regions do not reach full maturity until the early20s. 67Maybe.But it’s not as simple as it seems for two reasons.1.Different brain regions mature along with different timetables.68The part of the brain that handles logical thinking is usually fully developed by16,but those involved in self-discipline are still developing in young adulthood. This means they may not have the same level of emotional control, which can make them less responsible for their actions.2.69If it did,we wouldn’t have lived in a society that allows teenagers to drive before they can buy beer.Age boundaries are drawn mainly for political reasons, not scientific ones. It’s a pity that neuroscience won’t have much of an impact on politics although it is always correct.70It is pointless to try to determine the“right”age of maturation. The Dutch, for example, allow children to drink alcohol at the age of16but not to drive until they are19.Even if I firmly believe legal decisions should refer to neuroscience seriously and it’s a good idea to lower the drinking age and raise the driving age,I recognize that the government might never accept it.10.2023届上海市浦东新区高三英语二模专题汇编:六选四A.In reality gardens are anything but natural.B.What are the need!E.Much like agriculture, gardening is a universal human desire coded into our cultural DNA.F.The calmness created by owning a tiny green space under my control has a powerful effect on my mind.As a botanist who studies our cultural relationship with plants,I am forever fascinated with what draws people to gardening.Admittedly, connecting with the natural world might seem like an obvious motivation, and undoubtedly it is a key part of the attraction.___67___If they were,we’d abandon anyattempts at design, planting or care and watch how walls of weeds slowly gave way to themass of bushes. But that wouldn’t be gardening,of course, because for all their diversity, theone thing that all gardens have in common is how unnatural they are.___68___Dazzlingplants,water features and all about shaping the natural world to fit our idea of what it“should”be.As I work on my tiny terrariums(玻璃花园)on dark February nights, something magical happens to my brain. ___69___In a world that has become increasingly uncertain, people are often fuelled by the same psychological desire: the instinctive need to have a bit of control amid chaos. As our world becomes more and more unpredictable and often frightening, gardening seems to be able to appeal to and reach out to a whole new generation, often against all odds.Of course, gardening isn’t the only thing people turn to.The rise of culture conflicts and fixation on body image have also been widely documented as being driven by a psychological need to feel a degree of certainty, control and safety. However,I can’t help but think of these and social awareness. So, whichever way you’re reading, there are definitely benefits. But,let’s look at the pros to reading with your eyes—that’s physical books and e-books.____68____This is because when you can actually see the words, your attention is held more closely.Add to this the fact that with physical books you can go back and find any part you missed, especially if your mind wanders, which will likely happen at some point or other. On the other hand, there’s the audiobook.Headphones in,you’re switched off from life and the story really comes alive, almost like watching a film—in your head. From a scientific perspective, listening to an audiobook is likely to help you develop a fellow feeling as you hear the emotion of the narrator.____69____Hearing the story engages different parts of the brain, increasing the intensity and imagery, making you enjoy it more.Yet,going back to attention period, with an audiobook it’s true that it’s much harder to go back and listen again.____70____Perhaps,next time you find yourself browsing bookshop shelves, also consider the format. It may just change your whole literary experience.A.Potter surely had a business mind.B.A decade later, with slight adjustments, the lines formed the opening to what became the bestselling.C.It was this experience that gave Peter Rabbit its unique atmosphere of believable wonder.D.Potter was determined that the book should be small enough to fit into a child’s hands and inexpensive.E.She spent holidays in the Lake District, developing a love of landscape, which she closelyobserved and painted.F.Though her later stories would contain more strikingly detailed illustrations,The Tale of Peter Rabbit has charmingpictures of its naughty hero. The Enduring Appeal of Peter Rabbit“I don’t know what to write to you,so I shall tell you a story about four little rabbits, whose names were Flopsy, Mopsy,Cottontail and Peter,”wrote Beatrix Potter,an English writer, illustrator, natural scientist, and conservationist in 1893,in a letter to a little boy who was suffering from a serious infectious disease.Like many children-story authors,Potter was not a writer by profession. Her chief enthusiasm was natural history. Childhood family holidays in Perthshire and the Lake District had given her the freedom to experience the natural world first-hand.67Owing to Potter’s illustrations, the humanized rabbits seemed to exist in a recognizably real place. As Potter once admitted, the“careful botanical studies of my youth”informed the reality of her fantasy drawings.68 In these images,Peter in the vegetable garden ate radishes(萝卜)or jumped off the wall. The Tale of Peter Rabbit was first published by Frederick Warne in1902.69However,Warne disagreed.Only after Potter had the book privately published did Warne change his mind.It was an immediate success, much to Potter’s surprise.“The public must be fond of rabbits! What a shocking quantity of Peter,”she said. The original tales, under the Warne imprint, are still available today.70In1903,she registered a Peter Rabbit doll, making him the first fictional character to be made into a patented stuffed toy. After that, there were licensed wallpapers, board games and painting books. She earned large amounts of money. After her death, almost all her property was left to the National Trust.A.As that reduces effort over a sustained period,it could result in even more significant negative effects.B.Before receiving the text, half the participants were asked to think about the different ways they could obtain free food, should they fail to earn the snack.C.But participants asked to brainstorm other things before unscrambling sentences did just fine.D.However,the costs of making backup plans haven’t previously been examined.E.If you prepare for failure, you may be more likely to fail.F.They might not have been aware of this shift in their mindset while working, but they were less motivated.Making a Backup Plan Weakens PerformanceThere are certainly important benefits to making backup plans. One is the psychological comfort it brings:People think,“I’m going to be Okay, even if I fail because I can then do X or Y.”Another benefit is that if you fail, you won’t keep thinking about it;you can quickly implement your backup plan.(67)____________________Jihae Shin of Wisconsin School of Business believes that acknowledging the costs and benefits can lead to better and more informed decision making. She gave160university students a sentence-unscrambling(理清句子)task and promised an energy bar to those who performed it well.(68)____________________People encouraged to think about those backup plans unscrambled significantly fewer sentences on average than people who hadn’t been asked to formulate a plan B.In the follow-up experiment,Shin took the same approach but offered people different rewards—an extra dollar.“We think that when achieving a goal requires work, not luck, making a backup plan can hurt performance by reducing the desire for the goal.”said professor Shin.“In the third study in which participants were asked about how much they wanted the promised reward of one dollar, those who had been asked to think through backup plans reported that they wanted the cash less than others.(69)____________________So they put in less effort which hurt their results. The participants in the lab studies spent less than10minutes,thinking about their backup plans--a tiny investment of their attention--yet it significantly affected their motivation and performance on goal pursuit. In real life when the stakes are higher, people would be expected to devote more time and energy to mapping out the detailed backup plans.(70)___________________The practical advice from the researchers is:Hold off on making back up plans until you’ve put as much effort as possible into your primary goal.。

Any activity can be accompanied by music, selfies or social media updates. Of course, some people pick poor times to tweet or text, and lawmakers have stepped in. (67)________ In Honolulu, it's illegal to text or even look at your phone while crossing the street, and in the Netherlands they've banned texting while biking.(68)________ You need to self-regulate. Understanding how the brain multitasks and why we find multitasking so appealing will help you realize the danger of pulling out your phone.Multitasking feels like doing two things at the same time, so it seems the danger lies in asking one mental process to do two unrelated things— for texting drivers, watching the screen and the road.Twenty states have instituted bans on driving using a hand-held phone while still allowing hands-free calls. Yet hands-free or hand-held makes no difference. (69)________ The real problem is the switch of attention between the conversation and the road, and that affects performance.People sense this, and when on the phone they drive slower and increase their following distance, but they are far too confident that these measures reduce risks. This overconfidence extends to other activities. A 2015 survey showed that a majority of students who use social media, text or watch TV while studying think that they can still comprehend the material they're studying.People don't multitask merely because they see no harm in it; they see benefits. Stage frightImagine that you are an actor performing in a play for the first time. You have learned all your lines and you know where to walk on stage. Waiting behind the closed curtain, you can hear the audience whispering and taking their seats. Then your big moment arrives! The curtain goes up, and the crowd falls silent. All you can see is the spotlight shining down on you. 1 The inside of your mouth is dry, and your hands are wet.If you have experienced a moment like this, you know all too well what it means to have stage fright. It is one of the most common types of fear and tends to strike people when they find themselves at the centre of attention. 2 People experience this fear when playing sports, giving a presentation, or even speaking in class. A person who suffers from stage fright may get sweaty hands, a dry mouth, a tight throat, or shaky knees. Stage fright is actually a form of panic, and these feelings are very real.3 The experience differs from person to person, but the same chemical process occurs in each of us. In reaction to anxiety, our bodies produce a chemical that prepares us to either fight or run away quickly. Scientists refer to this as our bodies’ “fight or flight” reaction. Asa result, we feel great energy that makes our hands sweat, our hearts race, and our knees shake.4 Practising your performance and following some simple tips can help calm nerves and manage the feelings caused by anxiety. First, dress comfortably and appropriately. Second, before the performance, take deep breaths and stretch to help relax your body. Thirdly, stay away from drinks that contain caffeine. These might make your heart race even faster. Instead, try a banana! Some doctors believe that eating a banana can help calm your heart and the rest of your body. Finally, when you look into a crowd, try to focus on particular people instead of the whole group. These tips have helped many people learn to deal with their fears.A. Pick up the dish with the remain ing food.B. Proper food is a basic necessity for your puppies.C. Remember to give your puppy the food he would like to have.D. It can also cause an upset stomach due to an unbalanced diet.E. One example is that extra helpings of nutrients do harm to digestive organs.F. It’s good to provide the extra nutrients a puppy needs until he grows larger.A puppy (young dog) is a precious addition to any family. The excitement of bringing home a little furry friend will always live in our memories. Like all of us, though, your puppy must have adequate nutrition right from the start to make certain that it’ll have a long and healthy life.1 You might ask yourself what is the best for your new pet with all of the different varieties on the market in all of their attractive packaging. Some dry food produced specially for puppies is the best for the development of their teeth. A further benefit is that it is less expensive than the canned food.Contrary to the belief of many firsttime puppy owners, it is not always the best idea to purchase food that is too high in calcium (钙), protein, and vitamin levels. 2 In addition, a high intake of calcium is associated with bone disease in largebreed dogs. If you have a “smallbreed” puppy, you can buy that kind of food.It is not a good idea to feed the food you eat to your puppy frequently, as your puppy may become selective about food. 3 Some people think that dog biscuits and other treats are fine, but they should not be a main part of a puppy’s diet.Young puppies should be fed three times a day. Each puppy is unique, so feeding them twice a day is acceptable. After ten to twelve weeks of age, feed your puppy twice per day. Allow your puppy to eat as much as he would like in fifteen minutes. 4 If you let your puppy eat too much or too often by keeping food accessible at all times, he may become overweight and have health problems as an adult. Like humans, your puppy will not enjoy the food any longer if it is there at all times.Family valuesTo understand a nation, you should first get to know its minimum unit—family. __1 __ In the US, upon reaching an appropriate age (usually between 18 and 21 years), children are encouraged, but not forced, to “leave the nest” and begin an independent life. After children leave home, they often find social relationship and financial support outside the family. Parents do not arrange marriages for their children, nor do children usually ask permission of their parents to get married. Young adults meet their future spouses(配偶) through other friends, at jobs, and in organizations and religious institutions. Although children choose their own spouses, they still hope their parents will approve of their choices.Parents feel that children should make major life decisions by themselves in many families. A parent may try to influence a child to follow a particular profession but the child is free to chooseanother job. 2 A son may deliberately decide not to go into his father’s business because of a fear that he will lose his independence in his father’s workplace. This independence from parents is not an indication that parents and children do not love each other. Strong love between parents and children is universal and this is no exception in the American family.3 It is not like we Chinese. Parents are rulers and masters. We Chinese love our parents with fear and total respect. In America children always have their own opinions and even can talk about some sensitive problems with their parents, like family financial situation, the relationship between mother and father, and even sex._ 4 Therefore, it is contrary that on one hand, Americans admire independence and equality that they don’t want to make sacrifice to make up a family, but on the other hand, Americans think highly of family in their value system. The importance of accessibility awarenessAt a recent Teen Leadership of Jewish Family Services meeting, people with disabilities talked about their lives. I was amazed to hear about the challenges faced by people with physical disabilities. However, what amazed me most was the great importance of education about handicap accommodations (残疾人便利设施).One school teacher who is blind, and a woman who has used a wheelchair all her life are two important members of the National Group for Disabled Persons, devoted to raising awareness about disabilities. __1__ These include handicap parking spots, handrails, and wheelchair ramps. One big concern is the people who take advantage of aids, such as handicap parking spaces. __2__ And the meeting focused on educating the public. Some handicap spots have extra room next to them, marked with the “No Parking.” signs. “As long as I’m not in the spot, I can take the noparking area next to it, “ some people say. However, the woman who uses a wheelchair disagrees to this. The space exists to allow someone in a wheelchair to have room to get in or out of their car. __3__Some walkways have handrails next t o them to help those who require extra assistance. Whether it is a blind person seeking guidance or an elderly person seeking support, the rail is there for walking. Sometimes the rail is blocked, by a parked bicycle for instance, and consequently made useless. __4__ People who are informed of the rail’s use would be less likely to mistake it for a bike rack.Meeting some of the people who are affected by the lack of education about accommodations made me see that there is work to be done. If more people were educated about the proper uses of accommodations, there would be fewer challenges for people with physical disabilities.Teen peer pressureTeen peer pressure is the influence a teenager’s social group has on him or her. As adolescents enter the teen years, they usually begin to focus more on their peers or friends. __1__Peers influence most aspects of a teenager life, including how teenagers dress, what music they listen to, and what kind of activities they are involved in.__2__Good friends can encourage teenagers to do well in school, get involved in positive activities, eat healthy foods, and avoid drugs, alcohol, and other risky activities. Friends also help teenagers learn good social skills and better ways to communicate and work out problems. They always give teenagers good advice.Negative peer pressure is when teenagers feel pressured to do something they know is wrong, such as smoking, drinking, stealing, or cutting class.__3__This is because they want to be liked or fit in, they are afraid of being made fun of, or they want to try something other teenagers are doing. It is important for teenagers to learn how to deal with peer pressure. There are a lot of things a teenager can do to handle it.__4__Good friends use positive peer pressure to help you be your best self. Also you need to think about the consequences of your decisions and actions, such as if an activity might harm your health or get you into trouble. Or you can talk to your parents or a trusted adult about the kinds of peer pressure you face and listen to their advice. Remember that if just one teenager stands up against negative peer pressure, usually others will join him or her, and learning to handle peer pressure gives teenagers more confidence.Evaluating Sources of Health InformationMaking good choices about your own health requires reasonable evaluation. A key first step in bettering your evaluation ability is to look carefully at your sources of health information. Reasonable evaluation includes knowing where and how to find relevant information, how to separate fact from opinion, how to recognize poor reasoning, and how to analyze information andthe reliability of sources. The following suggestions can help you sort through the health information you receive from common sources.Go to the original source. Media reports often simplify the results of medical research. Find out for yourself what a study really reported, and determine whether it was based on good science. Think about the type of study. 1Watch for misleading language. Some studies will find that a behavior “contributes to” or is “associated with” an outcome;this does not mean that a certain course must lead to a certain result.2 Carefully read or listen to information in order to fully understand it.Use your common sense. If a report seems too good to be true, probably it is. Be especially careful of information contained in advertisements. 3 Evaluate “scientific” statements carefully, and be aware of quackery (江湖骗术).4 Friends and family members can be a great source of ideas and inspiration, but each of us needs to find a healthy lifestyle that works for us.Developing the ability to evaluate reasonably and independently about health problems will serve you well throughout your life.My theory is that the female brain is mainly built for empathy — the ability to understand other people — and that the male brain is mainly built for building systems. 1 For example, women are more likely to read magazines on fashion and parenting, while men will choose magazines that feature computers and sport. You may think that these preferences are influenced by the way people are taught to behave when they are growing up. However, this is not the case.A new study carried out at Cambridge University shows that newborn girls look longer at a face, and newborn boys look longer at a mobile. That suggests certain differences between male and female brains are biological. It has also been observed (that girls are better at noticing signs of changes in other people’s feelings. Boys, however, seem to enjoy building toy towers and playing with toys which have clear functions. 2 _ People whose jobs are in the construction industries are almost male. Math and engineering, which require high levels of systems-thinking, are also male-chosen disciplines. Why do men and women have the difference? Actually women have four times as many brain neurons (神经) that connect the right and left part of their brains. Because of it, women have a better ability to multitask than men.3 Men tend to focus on a limited number of problems at a time. They will separate themselves from problems and view tasks as independent from one another. Some people may worry that I am suggesting one gender is better than the other, but this is not the case. My theory says that males and females differ in the kinds of things that they find easy, but that both genders have their strengths and weaknesses. 4 It is not true. The study simply looks at males and females as two groups, and asks what differences exist, and why they are there.Anxiety is your mental watchman. Its fixed pattern is to search for what may be about to go wrong. It continually, and without your conscious permission, scans your life, even when you are asleep, in dreams and nightmares. 1 When it finds one, it worries it.Along with depression and anger, anxiety is one of the bad faces of worries. 2 Controlled by anxiety, you will feel a lack of security and confidence. When anxiety is severe and pained, it can be a sign of a disorder, such as panic or terror.Although anxiety seems to have a biological basis, it is habit-forming for many of us. Some of our anxious feelings are in fact wasted energy. Anxiety has gotten out of hand when it is pointless and repeated. When you are faced with a problem at work, before taking a test, or making an important decision, you will feel anxious. When you are controlled by anxiety, you are unable to control your emotions to the point of it changing your daily routine and habits. 3 Or you find you are usually anxious at work or around your family. At times, you should listen to the message of your negative emotions, as uncomfortable as they may be, and change your outward life rather than your emotional life. 4 If you are worried about the dangers of your brother’s new hobby, sky diving, perhaps you ought to tell him so. Taking action may relieve your anxiety. If that doesn’t work, then it’s time to deal with any automatic thoughts in yourself.By learning to stop always seeking guarantee, not only can you start to undo the automatic cycle of anxiety, but also you learn that you can manage just fine without the need for constant guarantee. This in turn creates a sense of self-confidence and self-respect, which is vital to overcome anxiety.1CABE 2BEDA 3BEAD 4CFEB 5FABE 6DFBA 7ACDF 8BDFE。
