The church wanted people to think of a Christian holiday on this day, so the church changed the name of the holiday. This change did not stop people in love from giving gifts to each other. People usually gave gloves, handkerchiefs, or even underwear as gifts. Sometimes people also put hearts and flowers on the present giving it to the other person.Valentine cards did not become popular until the 1750s. The first Valentine cards were made by hand. People wrote their own words on the cards. These words were usually kind or funny.Cards made by machines became more popular around 1850. 新视野大学英语读写教程(第二版)第一册课文原文

新视野大学英语读写教程(第二版)第一册课文原文A\B及翻译.Unit 1Learning a Foreign LanguageP1Learning a foreign language was one of the most difficult yet most rewarding experiences of my life. Although at times, learning a language was frustrating, it was well worth the effort.P2 My experience with a foreign language began in junior middle school, when I took my first English class. I had a kind and patient teacher who often praised all of the students. Because of this positive method, I eagerly answered all the questions I could, never worrying much about making mistakes. I was at the top of my class for two years.P3When I went to senior middle school, I was eager to continue studying English; however, my experience in senior school was very different from before. While my former teacher had been patient with all the students, my new teacher quickly punished those who gave incorrect answers. Whenever we answered incorrectly, she pointed a long stick at us and, shaking it up and down, shouted, "No! No! No!" It didn't take me long to lose my eagerness to answer questions. Not only did I lose my joy in answering questions, but also I totally lost my desire to say anything at all in English.P4However, that state didn't last long. When I went to college, I learned that all students were required to take an English course. Unlike my senior middle school teacher, my college English teachers were patient and kind, and none of them carried long, pointed sticks! However, the situation was far from perfect. As our classes were very large, I was only able to answer a couple of questions in each class period. Also, after a few weeks of classes, I noticed there were many students who spoke much better than I did. I began to feel intimidated. So, once again, although for different reasons, I was afraid to speak. It seemed my English was going to stay at the same level forever.P5That was the situation until a couple of years later, when I was offered an opportunity to study English through an online course. The communication medium was a computer, phone line, and modem. I soon got access to the necessary equipment, learned the technology from a friend and participated in the virtual classroom 5 to 7 days a week.P6Online learning is not easier than regular classroom study; it requires much time, commitment and discipline to keep up with the flow of the course. I worked hard to meet the minimum standards set by the course and to complete assignments on time.P7 I practiced all the time. I carried a little dictionary with me everywhere I went, as well as a notebook in which I listed any new words I heard. I made many, sometimes embarrassing, mistakes. Once in a while I cried with frustration, and sometimes I felt like giving up. But I didn't feel intimidated by students who spoke faster than I did because I took all the time I needed to think out my ideas and wrote a reply before posting it on the screen. Then, one day I realized I could understand just about everything I came across, and most importantly, I could "say" anything I wanted to in English. Although I still made many mistakes and was continually learning, I had finally reaped the benefits of all that hard work.P8 Learning a foreign language has been a most trying experience for me, but one that I wouldn't trade for anything. Not only did learning another language teach me the value of hard work, but it also gave me insights into another culture, and my mind was opened to new ways of seeing things. The most wonderful result of having learned a foreign language was that I could communicate with many more people than before. Talking with people is one of my favorite activities, so being able to speak a new language lets me meet new people, participate in conversations, and form new, unforgettable friendships. Now that I speak a foreign language, instead of staring into space when English is being spoken, I can participate and make friends. I am able to reach out to others and bridge the gap between my language and culture and theirs.学习外语是我一生中最艰苦也是最有意义的经历之一。

正副课文的词汇写作的题目与5,6,10单元正副课文有关10空15个选项的与5,6,10的A篇有关词汇选择和翻译句子与正课文有关Unit 5Section A Choose to be alone on purposeHere we are, all by ourselves, all 22 million of us by recent count, alone in our rooms, some of us liking it that way and some of us not. Some of us divorced, some widowed, some never yet committed.Loneliness may be a sort of national disease here, and it's more embarrassing for us to admit than any other sin. On the other hand, to be alone on purpose, having rejected company rather than been cast out by it, is one characteristic of an American hero. The solitary hunter or explorer needs no one as they venture out among the deer and wolves to tame the great wild areas. Thoreau, alone in his cabin on the pond, his back deliberately turned to the town. Now, that's character for you. Inspiration in solitude is a major commodity for poets and philosophers. They're all for it. They all speak highly of themselves for seeking it out, at least for an hour or even two before they hurry home for tea.Consider Dorothy Wordsworth, for instance, helping her brother William put on his coat, finding his notebook and pencil for him, and waving as he sets forth into the early spring sunlight to look at flowers all by himself. “How graceful, how benign, is soli tude,” he wrote. No doubt about it, solitude is improved by being voluntary.Look at Milton's daughters arranging his cushions and blankets before they silently creep away, so he can create poetry. Then, rather than trouble to put it in his own handwriting, he calls the girls to come back and write it down while he dictates. You may have noticed that most of these artistic types went outdoors to be alone. The indoors was full of loved ones keeping the kettle warm till they came home. The American high priest of solitude was Thoreau. We admire him, not for his self-reliance, but because he was all by himself out there at Walden Pond, and he wanted to be. All alone in the woods.Actually, he lived a mile, or 20 minutes' walk, from his nearest neighbor; half a mile from the railroad; three hundred yards from a busy road. He had company in and out of the hut all day, asking him how he could possibly be so noble. Apparently themain point of his nobility was that he had neither wife nor servants, used his own axe to chop his own wood, and washed his own cups and saucers. I don't know who did his laundry; he doesn't say, but he certainly doesn't mention doing his own, either. Listen to him: “I never found the companion that was so companionable as solitude.”Thoreau had his own self-importance for company. Perhaps there's a message here. The larger the ego, the less the need for other egos around. The more modest and humble we feel, the more we suffer from solitude, feeling ourselves inadequate company. If you live with other people, their temporary absence can be refreshing. Solitude will end on Thursday. If today I use a singular personal pronoun to refer to myself, next week I will use the plural form. While the others are absent you can stretch out your soul until it fills up the whole room, and use your freedom, coming and going as you please without apology, staying up late to read, soaking in the bath, eating a whole pint of ice cream at one sitting, moving at your own pace. Those absent will be back. Their waterproof winter coats are in the closet and the dog keeps watching for them at the window. But when you live alone, the temporary absence of your friends and acquaintances leaves a vacuum; they may never come back. The condition of loneliness rises and falls, but the need to talk goes on forever. It's more basic than needing to listen. Oh, we all have friends we can tell important things to, people we can call to say we lost our job or fell on a slippery floor and broke our arm. It's the daily succession of small complaints and observations and opinions that backs up and chokes us. We can't really call a friend to say we got a parcel from our sister, or it's getting dark earlier now, or we don't trust that new Supreme Court justice.Scientific surveys show that we who live alone talk at length to ourselves and our pets and the television. We ask the cat whether we should wear the blue suit or the yellow dress. We ask the parrot if we should prepare steak, or noodles for dinner. We argue with ourselves over who is the greater sportsman: that figure skater or this skier. There's nothing wrong with this. It's good for us, and a lot less embarrassing than the woman in front of us in line at the market who's telling the cashier that her niece Melissa may be coming to visit on Saturday, and Melissa is very fond of hot chocolate, which is why she bought the powdered hot chocolate mix, though she never drinks it herself. It's important to stay rational. It's important to stop waiting and settle down and make ourselves comfortable, at least temporarily, and find some grace and pleasure in our condition, not like a self-centered British poet but like a patient princess sealed up in a tower, waiting for the happy ending to our fairy tale. After all, here we are. It may not be where we expected to be, but for the time being we might as well call it home. Anyway, there is no place like home.翻译:有意选择独处事实如此,我们孤独无伴地生活着。

新视野Zoological阅读理解

新视野Zoological阅读理解

新视野Zoological阅读理解Zoology(动物学) deals with the study of the animals' habitat and behavior. It has nothing to do with people, so many students are wondering why they have to learn it.Our nature includes not just the humans but plants and animals as well. Everything in our environment is connected in a complex cycle. If you have a better understanding of how animals behave, then you would value nature better. Some animals, like sharks and snakes, are often misunderstood by people. They are thought of as human killers, and this is mainly because we don't understand why they behave that way.Zoology would help you learn their natural behavior as well as their habits, so you would understand why they behave in a defensive manner when they feel threatened.Studying zoology would help people know the real facts about animals. One of the sad facts is the decreasing numbers of some species of animals. It makes people realize that there is a need for nature to be always balanced. We need animals to keep the balance in our environment and for humans to survive.Zoology helps us learn the needs that animals have and we can respond by thinking of solutions we can give to the endangered speciesof animals.Technological progress is needed for a country to grow in terms of its economy; however, it should not force us to destroy our rain forests and oceans. People should realize that our modern lives should include the lives of the animals. Animals should not be contained in zoos but live in their natural habitats. We will learn that every living creature on the earth has the right to own a habitat and we need to fight for them to have permanent habitats.1.According to Paragraph 2, zoology helps people to __.A. know the structure of natureB. work with zoologists betterC. have an appreciation for natureD. understand the animals' behavior2.The example of sharks and snakes is used to show that___.A. people should have a better understanding of animalsB. people should communicate with animalsC. animals keep their behavior a mythD. animals are human killers3.In Paragraph 4, the author urges people to____.A. learn the real facts about animalsB. spread the knowledge of animalsC. satisfy the animals' needsD. protect endangered animals4.The passage is mainly about ____.A. the advantages of learning zoologyB. the importance of studying zoologyC. the basic knowledge of zoologyD. the ways of protecting animals。

It was formerly found on three Indonesian islands: Komodo, Rintja and Flores. By the 1930's, in spite of government protection, the population of this great lizard had been reduced to a few hundred. It was, however, still found on the three main islands and there were still lizards of over 4 metres in length. By 1963, after a period of only fifty years since its discovery, the entire population was based on Komodo. It is now unusual to see one as long as 3 metres. The lizard's normal food consists mainly of wild goats and pigs, animals which the islanders also hunt. This, of course, means that the lizard often gets too little to eat. They do not make loud noises, and they do not need to go for walks or take baths.Of course, some lizards make better pets than others. One of the most popular lizards in pet stores is the bearded dragon.Bearded dragons are active during the day and do not mind people holding them. Geckos are another popular pet lizard. They are a little more difficult to care for.Geckos are active at night and need a warm place to live. Like bearded dragons, they can be held by their owners. Both of these lizards can live ten years or more when they are well cared for. Two lizards that are bad choices for pets are iguanas and chameleons. Iguanas can grow to be almost two meters (nearly six feet),so they need a big space to live in. They can also bite or scratch their owners.Chameleons do not hurt their owners, but they are quite difficult to care for. While iguanas can live up to twenty years, chameleons do not live very long. Most do not live more than five years.注解:bearded dragon type of lizard胡须蜥bearded-having something on or below the chin that looks like a beard adj.有胡子的,有须的dragon-a large lizard in myths that flies and sometimes breathes fire n.龙蜥阅读理解Circle the letter of the best answer.1.This reading is about...a.good and bad pets.b.how to tell male from female lizards.c.why lizards are disappearing.d.wild animals.2.What is true according to the passage?a.It is not hard to care for most lizards.b.Lizards are better than dogs or cats.c.Lizard bites can be dangerous.d.Pet lizards need walks and baths.3.Which lizard would be good for a child to watch and play with during the day?a.A bearded dragon.b.A chameleon.c.A gecko.d.An iguana.4.Which lizard lives the longest?a.A bearded dragon.b.A chameleon.c.A gecko.d.
