The other day a friend of mine mentioned the fact that many of the advantages that we now take for granted, such as personal computers, cellular phones, and many more miniaturized electronic equipment, are the direct results of our efforts to put a man on the moon in the sixties. My friend was therefore quite disturbed by various groups' current opposition toward space exploration. My response to his aggravation was that maybe these opposing groups consider that there is still so much to be cleaned up amongst ourselves, and that we could use part of the humongous capital invested in space exploration to protect our environment, fund the economically less fortunate ones on our own earth, and reduce famine. (1)This prompted the conversation in the direction of shortsightedness. My friend concluded that we, human beings, are inconsiderate creatures, unable to interact with honesty and integrity, incapable of tolerating differences without institutionalizing them, and inept toward having pride for our individuality rather than for the group we happen to be part of. He stated that humanity seems to dwell in an everlasting stage of infancy, impotent to rise toward maturity. (2)This really fueled my pipe. I declared to my friend –and this may offend some readers even more at first impulse – that his cry was nothing new, for humanity has a herd-like mentality, which may explain the success of institutions such as the church throughout many centuries. Most of us are still group-thinkers rather than individual concluders. (3) We seem to be incapable of obtaining a state where massive progress is key. Too many of us will try everything to prevent others from getting ahead. Instead of becoming inspired by the runners among us, we do everything in our power to slow them down. Backstabbing and badmouthing are therefore primary skills in many a corporate environment. The concept of spirituality in the workplace is a beautiful one, but oh so hard to realize given our just described tendencies. We are in search for leadership, but our human leaders have their own set of flaws, for the human race is a fallible one. And this may, then, be the explanation for our need to find above-human leaders, which various religions name differently, so that we can gain some satisfaction from those.A brief overview of our history teaches us that, indeed, we made progress in our inventions in order to increase the ease with which we move through life. We invented heating equipment, cooling devices, transportation tools, mass communication contrivances, various research components to explore our own world and whatever is outside of it, and numerous other cogs. But, unfortunately, it seems that every time the quality of our life progresses, our mentality regresses. At the same time that we develop our great inventions, we also cultivate master-skills in making each other's life impossible. (4) Worse: we refuse to make the progress we obtain in one part of our planet available to other parts, thereby directly contradicting our religious teachings that we are all brothers and sisters, and that we should share with one another. The bare boned truth is, that we don't trust one another, and, sadly enough, don't have any reason to! Many authors and philosophers have stated it before: our species is moving at a dazzling speed toward self-destruction.We seem to take pride in finding ourselves in this downward mental spiral. Or maybe we just deliberately keep ourselves blind for this truth. But regardless which one of the above described approaches you perceive as the truth; we should seriously start wondering if our race is emotionally not developing in a reversed way. (5) Perhaps our ancient ancestors, in their unthinkably primitive ways, were the most perfect ones in emotional intelligence. And perhaps, then, the price for intellectual advancement is emotional degeneration.Sounds like doom thinking? If you think so, just consider your work-environment. Look around you the next time you're there. Evaluate your colleagues, supervisors, and subordinates. Consider what your gut feeling tells you about them. Do you trust all of them? Totally? Or are you one of the many members of our working-class who realize that there are numerous ones, outside our circle of acquaintances, but also inside of it, who are impatiently waiting to take our place should we even slightly stumble?1.Paraphrase the underlined sentences or parts in the article.2.Write a summary of the passage in Chinese (word limit: 150 words) Section Two LINGUISTICS (50%)I.Define the following terms: (20%)1.Stress2.Semantic change3.Sense relations4.Sociolinguistics5.The Co-operative principleII.What are “selectional restrictions”? (10%)II.Some students feel puzzled, saying “I have been told to learn linguistics, but I don’t see any relation between linguistics and English learning.”Can you explain contributions of linguistics to the research in language learning? (20%)武汉科技大学2005年硕士研究生入学考试试题参考答案课程名称:专业综合336专业名称:外国语言学及应用语言学共 5 页Section One ADV ANCED ENGLISH (70%)V.Explain each of the following cultural figures or terms briefly: (15%)1.Black HumorA term derived from Black Comedy. Its origin can be traced back toShakespeare’s time. But now the term is usually used to refer to some Western, especially American Post-World War II writers. It is a kind of desperate humor, laughter at tragic things. In the meaningless world, man’s fate is decided by incomprehensible powers. We can do nothing but laugh.2.Niccolo MachiavelliItalian politician and author, whose name is now synonymous with cunning and cynical statecraft. In his most important political works The Prince and Discourses, he discusses ways in which rulers can advance the interests of their states (and themselves) through an often amoral and opportunitist manipulation of other people.3.Ten CommandmentIn the Old Testament or Hebrew Bible, the laws given by God to the Israelite leader Moses on Mount Sinai, engraved on two tablets of stone. They are: to have no other gods besides Jehovah; to make no idols; not to misuse the name of God; to keep the Sabbath holy; to honor one’s parents; not to commit murder, adultery, or theft; not to give false evidence; not to be covetous. They form the basis of Jewish and Christian moral codes.4.Malthusian Population TheoryA theory on population proposed by Thomas Robert Malthus (1766-1834), anEnglish economist and cleric. It argued for population control, since populations increase in geometric ratio, and food only in arithmetic ratio. This theory saw war, famine and disease as necessary checks on population growth.5.The Great Depressionis the period also called Recession or the Slump during the early 1930s, when worldwide economic collapse precipitated commercial failure and mass unemployment. Starting in the USA in 1929, when share prices fell so disastrously that caused international repercussions that led to Roosevelt’s New Deal (1934).VI.Identify the figures of speech in the following sentences: (10%)1. The principle that conflict is the heart of dramatic action when illustrated by concrete examples, almost always turns up some aspect of the struggle between good and evil. The idea that there is neither good nor evil—in any absolute moral or religious sense—is widespread in our times. There are various relativistic and behavioristic standards of ethics. If these standards even admit the distinction between good and evil, it is as a relative matter and not as whirlwind of choices that lies at the center of living. In any such state of mind, conflict can at best, be only a pretty matter, lacking true universality. The acts of the evildoer and of the virtuous man alike become dramatically neutralized. Imagine the reduced effect of Crime and Punishment or The Brothers Karamazoc had Dostoevsky thought that good and evil, as portrayed in those books, were wholly relative, and if he had had no conviction about them. You can’t have a vital literature if you ignore or shun evil. What you get then is the world of Pollyanna, goody-goody in place of the good. Cry, The Beloved Country is a great and dramatic novel because Alan Paton, in addition to being a skilled workman, sees with clear eyes both good and evil, differentiates them, pitches them into conflict with each other, and takes sides. He sees that the native boy Absalom Kumalo, who has murdered, cannot be judged justly without taking into account the environment that has had part in shaping them. But Paton sees, too, that Absalom the individual, not society the abstraction, committed the act and is responsible for it. Mr. Paton understands mercy. He knows that this precious thing is not evoked by sentimental impulse, but by a searching examination of the realities of human action. Mercy follows a judgment; it does not precede it.One of the novels by the talents Paul Bowles, Let It Come Down, is full of motion, full of sensational depravities, and is a crashing bore. The book recognizes no good, admits no evil, and is coldly indifferent to themoral behavior of its characters. It is a long shrug. Such a view of life is nondramatic and negates the vital essence of drama.1. In our age, according to the author, a standpoint often taken in the areaof ethics is the _______.A. relativistic view of moralsB. greater concern with religionC. emphasis on evilD. greater concern with universals2. The author believes that in great literature, as in life, good and evil are_________.A. relative termsB. to be ignoredC. constantly in conflictD. dramatically neutralized3. When the author uses the expression “it is a long shrug in referring toBowles’s book, he is commenting on the __________.A. length of the novelB. indifference to the moral behavior of the charactersC. monotony of the storyD. sensational depravities of the book4. In the opinion of the author, Cry, The Beloved Country is a great anddramatic novel because of Paton’s _________.A. insight into human behaviorB. behavioristic beliefsC. treatment of good and evil as abstractionsD. willingness to make moral judgmentsPassage Two: Lucidity, Simplicity, EuphonyI have never had much patience with the writers who claim from the reader an effort to understand their meaning.(1) You have only to go to the great philosophers to see that it is possible to express with lucidity the most subtle reflections. You may find it difficult to understand the thought of Hume, and if you have no philosophical training its implications will doubtless escape you; but no one with any education at all can fail to understand exactly what the meaning of each sentence is. Few people have written English with more grace than Berkeley. There are two sorts of obscurity that you find in writers. One is due to negligence and the other to wilfulness. People often write obscurely because they have never taken the trouble to learn to write clearly. This sort of obscurity you findtoo often in modern philosophers, in men of science, and even in literary critics. Here it is indeed strange. You would have thought that men who passed their lives in the study of the great masters of literature would be sufficiently sensitive to the beauty of language to write if not beautifully at least with perspicuity. (2) Yet you will find in their works sentence after sentence that you must read twice to discover the sense. Often you can only guess at it, for the writers have evidently not said what they intended.Another cause of obscurity is that the writer is himself not quite sure of his meaning. He has a vague impression of what he wants to say, but has not, either from lack of mental power or from laziness, exactly formulated it in his mind and it is natural enough that he should not find a precise expression for a confused idea. This is due largely to the fact that many writers think, not before, but as they write. The pen originates the thought. (3) The disadvantage of this, and indeed it is a danger against which the author must be always on his guard, is that there is a sort of magic in the written word. The idea acquires substance by taking on a visible nature, and then stands in the way of its own clarification. (4) But this sort of obscurity merges very easily into the willful. Some writers who do not think clearly are inclined to suppose that their thoughts have a significance greater than at first sight appears. It is flattering to believe that they are too profound to be expressed so clearly that all who run may read, and very naturally it does not occur to such writers that the fault is with their own minds which have not the faculty of precise reflection. (5) Here again the magic of the written word obtains. It is very easy to persuade oneself that a phrase that one does not quite understand may mean a great deal more than one realizes. From this there is only a little way to go to fall into the habit of setting down one’s impressions in all their original vagueness. Fools can always be found to discover a hidden sense in them. There is another form of willful obscurity that masquerades as artistocratic exclusiveness. The author wraps his meaning in mystery so that the vulgar shall not participate in it. His soul is a secret garden into which the elect may penetrate only after overcoming a number of perilous obstacles. But this kind of obscurity is not only pretentious; it is short-sighted. For time plays it an odd trick. If the sense is meager time reduces it to a meaningless verbiage that no one thinks of reading. (6)Simplicity is not such an obvious merit as lucidity. I have aimed at it because I have no gift for richness. Within limits I admire richness in others, though I find it difficult to digest in quantity. (7) I can read one page of Ruskin with delight, but twenty only with weariness. The rolling period, the stately epithet, the noun rich in poetic associations, the subordinate clauses that give the sentence weight and magnificence, the grandeur like that of wave following wave in the open sea; there is no doubt that in all this there is something inspiring. Words thus strung together fall on the ear like music. The appeal is sensuous rather than intellectual, and the beauty of the sound leads you easily to conclude that you need not bother about the meaning. But words are tyrannical things, they exist for their meanings, and if you will not pay attention to these, you cannot pay attention at all. Your mind wanders. This kind of writing demands a subject that will suit it. It is surely out of place to write in the grand style of inconsiderable things. But if richness needs gifts with which everyone is not endowed, simplicity by no means comes by nature. (8) To achieve it needs rigid discipline. So far as I know ours is the only language in which it has been found necessary to give a name to the piece of prose which is described as the purple patch; it would not have been necessary to do so unless it were characteristic. English prose is elaborate rather than simple. It was not always so. Nothing could be more racy, straightforward and alive than the prose of Shakespeare; but it must be remembered that this was dialogue written to be spoken. We do not know how he would have written if like Corneille he had composed prefaces to his plays. It may be that they would have been as euphuistic as the letters of Queen Elizabeth. But earlier prose, the prose of Sir Thomas More, for instance, is neither ponderous, flowery nor oratorical. It smacks of the English soil. To my mind Kind James’s Bible has been a very harmful influence on English prose. I am not so stupid as to deny its great beauty. It is majestical. But the Bible is an oriental book. Its alien imagery has nothing to do with us.Those hyperboles, those luscious metaphors, are foreign to our genius. (9) I cannot but think that not the least of the misfortunes that the Secession from Rome brought upon the spiritual life of our country is that this work for so long a period became the daily, and with many the only, reading of our people. Those rhythms, that powerful vocabulary, that grandiloquence, became part and parcel of the national sensibility. Theplain, honest English speech was overwhelmed with ornament. Blunt English men twisted their tongues to speak like Hebrew prophets. There was evidently something in the English temper to which this was congenial, perhaps a native lack of precision in thought, perhaps a naïve delight in fine words for their own sake, an innate eccentricity and love of embroidery, I do not know; but the fact remains that ever since, English prose has had to struggle against the tendency to luxuriance. When from time to time the spirit of the language has reasserted itself, as it did with Dryden and the writers of Queen Anne, it was only to be submerged once more by the pomposities of Gibbon and Dr. Johnson. (10) When English prose recovered simplicity with Hazlitt, the Shelley of the letters and Charles Lamb at his best, it lost it again with De Quincey, Carlyle, Meredith and Walter Pater. It is obvious that the grand style is more striking than the plain. Indeed many people think that a style that does not attract notice is not style. They will admire Walter Pater’s but will read an essay by Mathew Arnold without giving a moment’s attention to the elegance, distinction and sobriety with which he set down what he had to say.The dictum that the style is the man is well known. It is one of those aphorisms that say too much to mean a great deal. Where is the man in Goethe, in his birdlike lyrics or in his clumsy prose? And Hazlitt? But I suppose that if a man has a confused mind he will write in a confused way, if his temper is capricious his prose will be fantastical, and if he has a quick, darting intelligence that is reminded by the matter in hand of a hundred things, he will, unless he has great self-control, load his pages with metaphor and simile. There is a great difference between the magniloquence of the Jacobean writers, who are intoxicated with the new wealth that had lately been brought into the language, and the turgidity of Gibbon and Dr. Johnson, who were the victims of bad theories. I can read every word that Dr. Johnson wrote with delight, for he had good sense, charm and wit. No one could have written better if he had not wilfully set himself to write in grand style. He knew good English when he saw it. No critic has praised Dryden’s prose more aptly. He said of him that he appeared to have no art other than that of expressing with clearness what he thought with vigor. And one of his Lives he finished with the words: “Whoever wishes to attain an English style, familiar but not coarse, and elegant but not ostentatious, must give his days and nights to the volumesof Addison.” (11) But when he himself sat down to write it was with a very different aim. He mistook the orotund for the dignified. He had not the good breeding to see that simplicity and naturalness are the truest marks of distinction.Whether you ascribe importance to euphony, the last of the three characteristics that I mentioned, must depend on the sensitiveness of your ear. A great many readers, and many admirable writers, are devoid of this quality. Poets as we know have always made a great use of alliteration. They are persuaded that the repetition of a sound gives an effect of beauty.I do not think it does so in prose. It seems to me that in prose alliteration should be used only for a special reason; when used by accident it falls on the ear very disagreeably. But its accidental use is so common that one can only suppose that the sound of it is not universally offensive.(12) Many writers without distress will put two rhyming words together, join a monstrous long adjective to a monstrous long noun, or between the end of one word and the beginning of another have a conjunction of consonants that almost breaks your jaw. These are trivial and obvious instances. I mention them only to prove that if careful writers can do such things it is only because they have no ear. Words have weight, sound and appearance; it is only by considering these that you can write a sentence that is good to look at and good to listen to.1. Reading Comprehension (40 points, 2 point for each)Directions: Read the following passages and answer the questions. Choose the most appropriate answer for each question and circle the letter on the answer sheet. Remember to write the letter corresponding to the question number.Questions 31-35 are based on the following passage:Conservationists call them hot spots - habitats that cover just 1.4 percent of the earth’s land surface but are so rich in biological diversity that preserving them could keep an astonishing number of plant and animal species off the endangered list.Since 1988, when Dr. Norman Myers and his colleagues began describing these hot spots in a series of scientific papers and arguing for their protection, they havebecome a focus of worldwide conservation efforts. Private organizations and government agencies, including the World Bank, have made preserving 25 such ecological arks a top priority for financing and protective legislation. But a growing chorus of scientists is warning that directing conservation funds to hot spots may be a recipe for major losses in the future. Of species that live on land, nearly half of all plants and more than a third of all animals are found only in the hot spots. But they do not include many rare species and major animal groups that live in less biologically rich regions (“cold spots”). And the hot-spot concept does not factor in the importance of some ecosystems to human beings, the scientists argue. This debate has been simmering(炖,煨,慢煮)quietly among biologists for years; however, it is coming to a boil now with the publication of an article in the current issue of American Scientist arguing that “calls to direct conservation funding to the world’s biodiversity hot spots may be bad investment advice.”“The hot-spot concept has grown so popular in recent years within the larger conservation community that it now risks eclipsing(超越)all other approaches,”write the authors of the paper. “The officers and directors of all too many foundations, non-governmental organizations and international agencies have been seduced by the simplicity of the hot spot idea,”they go on. “We worry that the initially appealing idea of getting the most species per unit area is, in fact, a thoroughly misleading strategy.”But hot spots have their ardent(热情的)defenders, notably Dr. Norman Myers and Dr. Russell Mittermeier. Dr. Myers says hot spots have been successful at attracting attention andfinancing for conservation in tropical countries. “And that has been good,”he said. “No one is suggesting that one invest solely in hot spots, but if you want to avoid extinctions, you have to invest in them.”31. The best title for this passage would be ________.A. A Debate on Preserving Hot SpotsB. An Introduction to Hot SpotsC. Hot Spots vs. Cold SpotsD. How to Finance Hot Spots32.Hot spots occupy a small percentage of the earth’s land surface with ________.A. a third of all plantsB. many major animal groups living in cold spotsC. rich biological diversityD. many rare species living in cold spots33.Critics of hot spots hold the opinion that ________.A. hot spots are always as important as cold spotsB. it is unwise to invest largely in hot spotsC. governments should choose the best time to invest in hot spotsD. the hot-spot approach is a misleading strategy from the very beginning34.According to Dr. Norman Myers, _________.A. protecting and investing in hot spots can save species from extinctionB. conservation efforts should not center on hot spotsC. governments should invest most in cold spotsD. the hot-spot approach now is not as good as it was in the past35.What is the writer’s attitude towards the hot-spot approach?A. Critical.B. Neutral.C. Supportive.D. Doubtful.Questions 36-40 are based on the following passage:Interactive television advertising, which allows viewers to use their remote controls to click on advertisements, has been pushed for years. Nearly a decade ago it was predicted that viewers of “Friends”, a popular situation comedy, would soon be able to purchase a sweater like Jennifer Aniston’s with a few taps on their remote control. “It’s been the year of interactive television advertising for the last ten or twelve years. ”says Colin Dixon of a digital-media consultancy. So the news that Cablevision, an American cable company, was rolling out interactive advertisements to all its customers on October 6th was greeted with some skepticism. During commercials, an overlay will appear at the bottom of the screen, prompting viewers to press a button to request a free sample or order a catalogue. Cablevision hopes to allow customers to buy things with their remote controls early next year.Television advertising could do with a boost. Spending fell by 10% in the first half of the year. The popularization of digital video recorders has caused advertisers toworry that their commercials will be skipped. Some are turning to the Internet, which is cheaper and offers concrete measurements like click-through rates---especially important at a time when marketing budges are tight. With the launch of interactive advertising, “many of the dollars that went to the Internet will come back to the TV, ”says David Kline of Cablevision. Or so the industry hopes. In theory, interactive advertising can engage viewers in a way that 30-seconds spots do not. Unilever recently ran an interactive campaign for its Axe Deodorant(除臭剂),which kept viewers engaged for more than three minutes on average. The amount spent on interactive advertising on television is still small. Magna, as advertising agency, reckons it will be worth about $ 138 million this year. That falls far short of the billions of dollars people once expected it to generate. But DirecTV, Comcast and Time Warner Cable have all invested in it. A new effort led by Canoe Ventures, a coalition of leading cable providers, aims to make interactive advertising available across America later this year. BrightLine iTV, which designs and sells interactive ads, says interest has surged: it expects its revenues almost to triple this year. BSkyB, Britain’s biggest satellite-television service, alreadyprovide 9 million customers with interactive ads.Yet there are doubts whether people watching television, a “lean back”medium, crave interaction. Click-through rates have been high so far(around 3-4%, compared with less than 0.3% online), but that may be a result of the novelty. Interactive ads and viewers might not go well together.36.What does Colin Dixon mean by saying “It’s been the year of interactive television advertising for the last ten or twelve years”(Lines 4-5, Para.1)?A. Interactive television advertising will become popular in 10-12 years.B. Interactive television advertising has been under debate for the last decade or so.C. Interactive television advertising is successful when incorporated into situation comedies.D. Interactive television advertising has not achieved the anticipated results.37.What is public’s response to Cablevision’s planned interactive TV advertising program?A. Pretty positive.B. Totally indifferent.C. Somewhat doubtful.D. Rather critical.38.What is the impact of the wide use of digital video recorders on TV advertising?A. It has made TV advertising easily accessible to viewers.B. It helps advertisers to measure the click---through rates.C. It has placed TV advertising at a great disadvantage.D. It enables viewers to check the sales items with ease.39.What do we learn about Unilever’s interactive campaign?A. It proves the advantage of TV advertising.B. It has done well in engaging the viewers.C. it helps attract investments in the company.D. It has boosted the TV advertising industry.40.How does the author view the hitherto high click-through rates?A. They may be due to the novel way of advertising.B. They signify the popularity of interactive advertising.C. They point to the growing curiosity of TV viewers.D. They indicate the future direction of media reform.Questions 41-45 are based on the following passage:Maybe it’s a sign of a mature mind when some of life’s bigger questions---about love, faith, ambition---suddenly seem more manageable than smaller ones, such as: why did I just open the refrigerator? Where on earth did I put my keys? Where did I write down that phone number? Our capacity for storing and recalling information does not stream down like sand through an hourglass, as neurologists once believed. On the contrary, new research suggests that, when stimulated in the right way, brains of almost any age can give birth to cells and forge fresh pathways to file away new information. This emerging picture has not only encouraged those who treat and care for the 5% of older adults who have dementia(痴呆症) such as Alzheimer’s disease, but also generated a wave of optimism among those studying memory changes in the other 95%, as well as an increasing public fascination with “memory enhancement”dietary supplements, books and brain-improving techniques. The slight failures of memory that many of us attribute to a failing brain are often due to something entirely different: anxiety, sleep problems, depression, even heart disease. The biological nuts and bolts of learning and memory in fact change little over time in healthy people, researcher say. “There is very little cell loss, and structurally all the machinery is there, even very late in life, ”said a neuroscientist Greg Cole. It’s the cells’speed and ability to send and receive signals that diminish gradually, which is what makes the mind go blank when trying to recall familiar words and names. For more than a decade, researchers have known that people who have active, intellectually challenging lives are less likely to develop dementia than those who do not. Part of this difference is attributable to intelligence, some doctors believe, The more you start with, the longer it takes to lose it. And new evidence suggests that the act of using your brain is in itself protective, no matter who you are.All of the activities, such as reading newspaper , watching TV, playing games, etc. , canimprove people’s scores on standard tests measuring recall of numbers and names, experts say. They also acknowledge, however, that there is a big difference between playing chess with a friend and doing a mental exercise, such as memorizing numbers. One is an organic part of a person’s life, the other a purely intellectual exercise, done in isolation. The first is fun; the second, often, is a tiring task.41.According to the text, adult persons usually_____A. stress the settlement of bigger problems.B. focus their attention on great issues.C. overlook the remembrance of trivial things.D. suffer memory decline related to age.42.According to new research, it’s distinct that_____A. our brain cells can be producible.B. our memory may be renewable.C. most mental illnesses are curable.D. brain-mending methods are available.43.The phrase “nuts and bolts”in Par.3 most probably means_____A. basic structures.B. complex tasks.C. practical aspects.D. working parts.44.As asserted by researchers, our inability to memorize words or names mainly___A. results from the declining efficiency of brain cells.B. results in the brain’s liability to radical interference.C. consists of different mental disorders.D. consists in various emotional problems.45.Experts suggest that the best way to avoid memory failures is____.A. to take more dietary supplementsB. to keep mental function aliveC. to find an intellectual occupationD. to do more intellectual exerciseQuestions 46-50 are based on the following passage:Every year at Thanksgiving, parts of the Upper West Side of Manhattan become like a paradise for children. There’s the exciting preparation of the balloons and floats for the Thanksgiving Day parade, and then, on Thursday morning, the parade itself. The weather isn’t always kind. I’ve seen the kids out there in snow, in freezing rain, in winds that threaten to send the balloons and their handlers soaring to distant venues. It doesn’t seem to matter. The children come into the neighborhood in waves, holding the hands of adults or riding atop their shoulders, smiling, laughing, and playing hide-and-seek among the police barriers. Finally, inevitably, they end up staring in absolute open-mouthed, wide-eyed look as huge colorful creation of their favorite characters begin making their grand way down Central Park West.We have an obligation and an opportunity at this special moment in history to do right by these youngsters, and all the rest of America’s kids. It’s a special moment because we’ve seen so clearly the many things that have gone wrong in the society, and it may not be easy to articulate. The American economy is broken, ruined by the greed and irresponsibility of fabulously wealthy corporate headmen and their shabby helpers and enablers in government. While Wall Street is handing out billions in bonuses, American families are struggling with joblessness, home foreclosures and a huge sum of debt. The economic woes are having a negative impact on family life, and children are taking a big hit--- emotionally, psychologically and otherwise. One effect of the Great Recession, according to a recent series in The New York Times, has been a big jump in the number of runaway children, many of them living in dangerous condition on the street.Family homelessness is also up. And poverty is increasing. More than a third of all black children in America are poor, and that tragic percentage is expanding. The outlook for America’s working classes is bleak. A few weeks ago a New York cab driver broke down in tears as he toldme he’d had to apply for food stamps to continue feeding his family.A sense of urgency may be starting emerge. With president Obama’s jobs summit approaching, representatives from labor and progressive organizations gathered in Washington to warn of the lasting damage being imposed on the prospects of young Americans by the continuing employment crisis.46.What does the author mean by “floats”(Line2, Para.1)?A. Decorated vehicles in the parade.B. Balloons floating in the sky.C. Something blown away by the wind.D. Artificial flowers in the parade.47.We can infer from the second paragraph all of the following EXCEPT_____.A. the wind is quite strong on the day of the paradeB. children are excited enough to resist the cold weatherC. the police are there ready to arrest anyone suspiciousD. children stay there to watch the parade until the end48.According to the text, _____ suffer(s) most in the economic dilemma.A. the Wall StreetB. the wealthy corporate’s headmenC. the American familiesD. the enablers in government49.It can be inferred from the text that _____.A. the prospect of American economy is prosperousB. the poverty of the black children is expanding fastestC. the New York cab driver are on strikeD. children’s escaping from home is on the rise50.Which of the following can best summarize the main idea of the text?A. In the following two sections you are supposed to translate one English passage into Chinese and one Chinese passage into English.Section A English to Chinese (60 points)I hate jogging. It' s so tedious. Some claim jogging is thought conducive, others insist the scenery relieves the monotony. For me, the pace iswrong for contemplation of either ideas or vistas. While jogging, all I can think about is jogging—or nothing. From the listless looks of some fellow trotters, I gather I am not alone in my unenthusiasm. Nonetheless, we continue to jog; more, we continue to choose to jog. From a practically infinite array of opportunities, we select one that we don' t enjoy and can' t wait to have done with. Why? For any trend, there are as many reasons as there are participants. This person runs to lower his blood pressure. That person runs to escape the telephone or a cranky spouse or a filthy household. Another person runs to avoid doing anything else, to dodge a decision about how to lead his life or a realization that his life is leading nowhere. Each of us has his carrot and stick. In my case, the stick is my slackening physical condition, which keeps me from beating opponents at tennis whom I overwhelmed two years ago. My carrot is to win.Beyond these disparate reasons, however, lies a deeper cause. It is no accident that now, in the last third of the 20th century, personal fitness and health have suddenly become a popular obsession. True, modern man likes to feel good, but that hardly distinguishes him from his predecessors. With zany myopia, economists like to claim that the deeper cause of every thing is economic. Delightfully, there seems no marketplace explanation for jogging. True, jogging is cheap, but then not jogging is cheaper. And the scant and skimpy equipment which jogging demands must make it a marketer' s least favored form of recreation.Section B Chinese to English (60 points)有朋友在情场上轰轰烈烈地驰骋了一阵,终于累了,最后,收拾情心,悄悄退回书斋之中,终日与书本为伍。

I initially felt sad, you know. I didn’t grow up with my father beside me. I grew up with my grandma and so I practically hadn’t felt how it is like to live with your father — or even with your immediate family. The word “father” is really a very strange word for me. I was often jealous with my classmates whenever we would have a family day and my parents were often not around. But then, I outgrew that — I became used to my situation. Besides, I wasn’t the only one “suffering” in that way. But my father and I meet once in a while. During special occasions, he would go to our house and would visit me, if only to say hi or greet me in that occasion — may it be Christmas, my birthday or new year. But then, it isn’t enough, is it?Therefore, I am not very comfortable in his presence especially now that I am also beginning to grow up. I just always feel sorry that the times when we could really get to know each other better had just passed us by and time is simply one of the most unchangeable things on earth. Whatever we did in the past, we never undo. Whatever we failed to do, we cannot do now — at least, with as much effect as it could have by then. However, I believe that my father’s absence is not a reason for me not to learnsomething from him. As a matter of fact, the reality that I grew up not having him beside me taught me a wonderful thing: Independence. Yes, because I know that I don’t always have a father whom I can share my problems with, I grew up more mature and more capable of solving my problems and bearing with difficulties. And I am always proud of that. And I guess, he is also proud of what I am becoming right now.61. According to the passage, the author grows up with _______ .A. his fatherB. his motherC. his grandfatherD. his grandmother62. What does the word “outgrew” (Para.2) mean?A. Grow faster than.B. Grow older than.C. Grow too big for.D. Grow old enough to overcome.63.Which of the following is NOT true about the author’s feeling about his father?A. He became used to the situation without his father.B. He was sad when he was young.C. He hates his father.D. Now he feels proud of his independent ability.64. What does the author get from his father’s absence?A. Uneasiness.B. Independence.C. Sadness.D. Dependence.65. What can be inferred from the passage?A. The author has forgiven his father’s absence.B. The father never worries about the author.C. The father does not care for the author at all.D. The author is indeed quite angry with his father.Passage Two:Questions 66 to 70 are based on the following passage.I went through four years of high school in Alabama, and became active in clubs and sports. I made a lot of friends and became a regular boy. But one thing was irregular about me: I managed those four years without ever having a friend visit my house.I was ashamed of where I lived. We had a big family. Several of the members of thefamily were sleeping in one room, but that’s not so bad if you get along and we always did. As you get older, though, things get worse. We lived in a lot of old houses. Some of them were in bad shape ten years before we moved in, they were hot in summer and freezing in winter. I woke up every morning for a year and a half with dust on my face. It had fallen out of the ceiling during the night. The same goes for keeping a house like that clean. If you have a house full of children and rubbish, you will keep it clean. Daddy used to shout at Mama about that, but she couldn’t do anything. I think Daddy knew it himself, but he had to let out his anger somewhere. And shouting at least isn’t as bad as hitting. This was not during the Depression; this was in the l ate 60’s and early 70’s.I am thankful none of us children ever blamed our parents for this. It was not their fault. They were always looking for a house just a little better than the place we were living in. you have to understand that my parents worked a lot harder than most people. My mother was always at home, but for her that was a full-time job —and no fun, either. But my father worked his head off from the time I can remember, in factories or shops. It was hard labor. But no matter how much money Daddy earned, we never made much progress up the social ladder. That was how it was in those days in the United States.66. Which of the following is true about the narrator as a high school student?A. He made a lot of friends, but no one would like to visit his house.B. He did not have a really good friend at all.C. He did not invite any friend to his house when in high school.D. He was an irregular boy because he managed four years without ever having afriend visit his house.67. He did not have a friend visit his house because of ________ .A. His poor family.B. His old houses.C. His parents who didn’t make much money.D. His parents who couldn’t buy him good houses to live in.68. What can be inferred from the passage?A. He was active in clubs and sports although he never had a friend visit his house.B. It is difficult to fix up the old house; so is it to keep it clean.C. Daddy used to shout at Mama although she could do nothing to keep the houseclean.D. Shouting is better than hitting.69. What does the phrase “worked his head off” (Para.6) mean?A. worked for a long time until his head was offB. worked very hard to make his head offC. worked for a long timeD. worked to death70.
