The origins of Dragon Boat Festival
the story of QuYuan
Qu was a minister of the State of Chu situated in present-day Hunan and Hubei provinces, during theWarring States Period(475-221BC)（战国时期）. He was upright, loyal and highly esteemed for his wise counsel that brought peace and prosperity to the state. However, when a dishonest and corrupt prince vilified Qu, he was disgraced and dismissed from office. Realizing that the country was now in the hands of evil and corrupt officials, Qu grabbed a large stone and leapt into the Miluo River on the fifth day of the fifth month. Nearby fishermen rushed over to try and save him but were unable to even recover his body. Thereafter, the state declined and was eventually conquered by the State of Qin. The people of Chu who mourned the death of Qu threw rice into the river to feed his ghost every year on the fifth day of the fifth month. But one year, the spirit of Qu appeared and told the mourners that a hugereptile（爬行动物）in the river had stolen the rice. The spirit then advised them to wrap the rice in silk and bind it with five different-colored threads before tossing it into the river.

农历五月初五端午节，是中国夏季最重要的传统节日。中医理论认为，这一天阳气 为一年中最盛，于是端午便成了人们驱邪防病的最佳时机。5月28日这天，宜宾城区的几 个农贸市场里人流攒动，人们都在购买节日食品，除了买粽子、鸭蛋，记者发现，艾草、 菖蒲在市场上很走俏，很多人的手里都拿着一束。一位卖草的老者告诉记者，这是艾草、 菖蒲，挂在门口可以辟邪保平安。 端午节在门口挂艾草、菖蒲，就像贴上一道灵符，可以趋利避害。宜宾人过端午， 一般会将艾草、菖蒲用草绑成一束，然后挂在门楣上。正在购买艾草、菖蒲的李阿姨告诉 记者，端午节挂艾草、菖蒲是有一个说法的，传说明末清初，张献忠入川，大肆烧杀抢掠 ，老百姓纷纷逃避。一天张献忠看见一老太婆，背上背着一个大一点孩子，手上牵着一个 小一点的孩子就觉得好奇怪，便上前问其原因，老太回答让他吃了一惊：原来老太背上背 的是别人的儿子，由于父母都被乱军杀了，只剩下一个独苗苗了。手上牵着的才是自己的 孙子。张献忠大受感动：这老人实在太善良了！在路边顺便扯了一把野草交给老太，叫她 把这把草挂在门口，并传令“凡是门口挂有此草的一律不杀”。这把草就是菖蒲、艾蒿（ 四川人叫成艾）。“现在挂艾草、菖蒲就是为了辟邪保平安。”李阿姨说。 据了解，艾草是一种可以治病的药草，插在门口代表招百福，可使主人身体健康。 从我国古代开始就一直是药用植物，针灸里面的灸法，就是用艾草作为主要成分，放在穴 道上进行灼烧来治病。有关艾草可以驱邪的传说已经流传很久，主要也是因为它具备医药 功能而来。而菖蒲则主要因为民间方士将其象征成可以铲除不祥的宝剑，插在门口可以避 邪，所以方士们称它为“水剑”，后来的风俗则引申为“蒲剑”，可以斩千邪，驱邪却鬼 。

The Dragon Boat Festival, the 5th day of the 5th month in the Chinese lunar calendar, has had a history of more than 2,000 years. It is usually in June in the Solar calendar. 端午节（农历五月初五）是中国古老的传统节日，始于春秋战国时期，至 今已有2000多年历史。通常在阳历的六月份。
