Unit 2 Poems

The Amazon basin region is home to about 2.5 million insect species, tens of thousands of plants, and some 2,000 birds and mammals. To date,at least 40,000 plant species,3,000 fish,1,294 birds,427 mammals,428 amphibians, and 378 reptiles have been scientifically classified in the region. One in five of all the birds in the world live in the Amazon rainforest. The warm and wet forest has been in existence for at least 55 million years, and thrived even during glacial periods, allowing for the evolution of an unbelievable diversity of species.Radiocarbon dating(放射性碳定年法) has revealed trees of 10 centimeter in diameter to be more than 300 years old,and some trees over 1,000 years old, indicating that untouched forests can experience unbelievable longevity. The first human inhabitants are thought to have settled in the Amazon region about 11,200 years ago.European explorers arrived in the 16th century, bringing diseases which traveled faster than the explorers themselves, killing perhaps as many as 90% of the indigenous inhabitants(土著居民).By the late 17th century the Amazon basin was controlled by Portuguese and Spanish explorers. The Amazon rainforests has been described as the lungs of our planet because of its important role in recycling carbon dioxide into oxygen. But due to deforestation(滥伐森林),rainforests now cover less than 5% of the Earth’s land surface, and experts believe that this is a big contributor to global climate change.Severe deforestation began in the 20th century, with 587,000 square kilometers lost up to the year 2000.Most deforested land is used for grassland to raise farm animals and agriculture. The addition of transport routes has led to increased settlement and deforestation, and at the present rate, scientists estimate that the Amazon rainforest will be reduced by 40% in two decades.【解题导语】本文主要讲述了亚马逊热带雨林的历史、丰富的物种以及现在所面临的危险。

1. What’s the running theme of the film?I think the running theme of the film maybe the liberation of nature, the pursuit of freedom.Teacher Keating instilled free to the students, Led them to break the traditional education, His students under his education began to struggle for their dreams, begin to seek out their own inner yearning. The film teaches us to listen to inner voice. When we see traditional conservative ideas of the school and all students without blood drive, we hope that anyone can change that. The teacher keating came. Meticulously to see students to take notes, we would like to see some different, so keating said it was a waste of materials, so tear up a few pages. Saw a child respond to the teacher on the table, we hope to have inspire other boys, they were also stood up, coruscate gives we want them to glow of free breath.I think that the presence of the dead poets society give children who don't understand the poetry opened a door of freedom, though it only open in the darkness of night. I have always believed that poetry is a scalpel, resect the tumor of the thought, refinement on the hearts of those who have been silent, too.2. Do you like Keating’s educational ideas and his special ways of teaching and why?I like k eating’s deucationl ideas and his ways of teaching.because Hiseducation can give students a positive impact. From him, we can see the shadow of the artist. They have never been famous, but hiding in the corner of the city, to do their own dreams. He teaches the students not only knowledge but also the truth of human. He let the children understand the freedom of the life, give them the courage to pursue their dreams. His teaching is not popular with the traditional education idea, but the liberation of the student's thought.Under mr.keating’s guidance ,the boys begin to swin against the stream and pursue their dreams.todd Anderson becomes brave and learns to lead his own path.charlie Daltuon is punihed for “the call from god”.charlie is reminded that he should choose a cautious and wise way to suck all the marrow out of life.the most unlucky one is neil perry .he is too concerned with his ideal to make necessary compromise with reality.he put himself into an impasse and he kills himself in order to make his body free. This romantic teacher education his students with passion and dream, his experience is a tragedy, he chose a different path, butI think he is successful teacher, he gives a soul to the students.3. Do you think we can imitate Keating’s wa y of teaching? What difficulties are we facing if we do?This education may be difficult to replicate, because it’s the product of a particular period. When the Appropriate people attend at the right time, this form of education will happen. we can not think beyond society . On the background of a traditional educational, many things can not been controlled by people. If we do like mr.keating,Our leaders may not agree with us, we will lose our jobs. Protests from parents, life pressure and so on, will become our difficulties. Teachers without proper teaching materials, not every teacher can write their own books. The students in reality can not be like in the movie. The current exam system is not suitable for the keating's teaching method. In a word, in the concrete implementation, will encounter many difficulties. We can't live out of education, movies and life is not the same. We can accept the idea of Mr Keating, his ideas on education combined with the actual situation, create the education method is appropriate for my situation. The teacher should be in the transmission of knowledge, encourage students to develop their unique spirit at the same time. Every student is different, we need to give students the opportunity to develop their own talents.4. Why is the tradition so powerful and how can we break it out? Because in theschool, people with traditional idea holds the rights, they stick to the traditional education concept, there is no new sounds. When there is a new teacher put forward different opinions, then they beat him, and destruction of the development of new things. The formation of traditional also experienced a long time, after a long time of accumulation, traditionalbecome truth, cannot be changed. People always like to get accustomed to things, when used things began to change, they may feel panic, especially powerful men, they are afraid of losing power, will be to maintain the traditional.Break the traditional is very difficult. I think the first thing should be determined the truth. Only use the truth to convince people, let people understand the correctness of the new things, can make people change the traditional way, accept new ideas. Next,we need have a firm confidence. The truth prove that takes time, we may have to undergo countless failures to succeed. Tradition is also under the accumulation of time, gradually formed. Finally, to adopt the method of science. It is difficult to let people accept new things at a draught, so it's very important to the choice of methods, can adopt the method of osmosis, gradually to get people to accept.5. What do you think of Neil’s death? Is it avoidable? This is an extreme way, death is to escape, is a cowardly act. Neil's death has no value, changes nothing of his death, his pursuit of freedom is actually lost. His behavior not only took their own lives, and hurt the people around him. His parents lost their son, a teacher lost the opportunity to continue to education students. We felt sorry for his death, but it's not worth , this is wrong, will only make things worse. In fact, he can take some positive practice, through the communication to obtain the blessing of their parents, he can prove himself to his parents for his efforts to choose the right, he canask the teacher for help, all in all, positive think solution is much better than suicide.I think commit suicide can be avoided. If Neil can change their own character. If he is a cheerful person, if he can to the life full of hope, then he will not choose to commit suicide, but take a positive approach. In addition, if the parents can understand him, Neil in daily life show more love for him, give him confidence, to give him encouragement, so things can be resolved.6. How do comment on Neil’s parents? Are they so familiar to us? How do you deal with such parents?Neil's parents don't know how to express their love. They use the incorrect way to education child, lets the child repressed, finally choose death. In fact, the parents feel good choice, children are not like too, respect the child's interest is the best choice. my parents seldom asked me to do things I really had no interest or gave up my interest though they sometimes made decisions I didn’t like in the past of my life .So when I saw Neil’s father ,a stubborn man ,never allow Neil to act in the play which Neil likes most, I got shocked.I think with such parents need to be patient communication. Neil's parents don't know my children, they did not listen to child's voice, always make a choice for him. If I were Neil, I would rational express their views, to seek the aid of all and to persuade parents with me, I want to show results prove that I choose the right. On the other hand, I also want to understandtheir parents, understand their painstaking, understand that they are in order to I have a better future. I'll find the balance between my parents' hope and my own hobby.7. What do you think of the major members of the Dead Poets Society, particularly Cameron, the fink? The members of the dead poets society is a group of students willing to accept new things. They are students dare to seek freedom, they have their own dreams, they want to challenge the old education system. Although they failed, but their action is positive, they changed their, brave to challenge the whole school. I admire the members of the courage, each and every one of them is a hero. When they read poetry, they are the truly happy, their life is valuable. Although the conditions don't allow them to sing, but, the truth will prevail, dead poets society would not die, lives in people's hearts forever.I think Cameron is a disappointing boy.He said the teacher encouraged neil should seek for his dream,mr.keating should be blamed.but it is not the truth. The teacher wanted the young to be happier and live a rich life. I feel sorry for them .They are full of passion for their life but they lead a poor life .They have no right to choose their future .They parents do that for them .Y ou grow to be a banker ,and you grow to be a doctor .They have a lot of money but they are feeling sorry for themselves .The young have done nothing wrong but they have to be a man what their parents ask them to be.They all should be sympathized.8. Make comments on the realistic situation of our education and point out the similarities and differences. Our education is a kind of exam-oriented education. Learning is in order to can get high marks in the exam, we cultivate not to use the knowledge ability, but the ability to cope with exams. That’s why Chinese student studies very well, but the ability to work is very poor. We never care about the students' interest is what, the future want to engaged in what industry, we only care about students' scores. Students have no clear goals in life, very few have their own play space, most of the time is to do exercises. Teachers and parents are concerned about the students' grades, don't allow students playing games, our study life is boring.Education is a major part of American culture. Schools do more than just fill students' heads with knowledge. They pass on culture, traditions and values.American children start their education in elementary school. Most youngsters enter first grade at around six years of age. Children can prepare for this step by attending preschool and kindergarten from ages three to five. Y oung learners finish elementary school in fifth or sixth grade. From there, students go on to junior high school until eighth or ninth grade. Americans complete their required education in high school. They graduate and receive a diploma after twelfth grade. The students can not only learn theory knowledge, and, more importantly, to master the practical skills.。

No poem should ever be discussed or "analyzed", until it has been read aloud by someone, teacher or student. Better still, perhaps, is the practice of reading it twice, once at the beginning of the discussion and once at the end, so the sound of the poem is the last thing one hears of it. All discussions of poetry are, in fact, preparations for reading it aloud, and the reading of the poem is, finally, the most telling 'interpretation' of it, suggesting tone, rhythm, and meaning all at once. Hearing a poet read the work in his or her own voice, on records or on film, is obviously a special reward. But even those aids to teaching cannot replace the student and teacher reading it or, best of all, reciting it.I have come to think, in fact, that time spent reading a poem aloud is much more important than "analyzing" it, if there isn't time for both. I think one of our goals as teachers of English is to have students love poetry. Poetry is "a criticism of life", "a heightening of life, enjoyment with others". It is "an approach to the truth of feeling", and it "can save your life". It also deserves a place in the teaching of language and literature more central than it presently occupies.I am not saying that every English teacher must teach poetry. Those who don't like it should not be forced to put that dislike on anyone else. But those who do teach poetry must keep in mind a few things about its essential nature, about its sound as well as its sense, and they must make room in the classroom for hearing poetry as well as thinking about it.(1)The passage indicates that analyzing a poem is .A. not essential at allB. a preparation for appreciating itC. an approach to understanding itD. optional in class sometimes(2)The recitation of a poem by the teacher or a student in the classroom .A. is the best way to understand itB. easily arouses some discussion among the studentsC. helps the teacher to analyze itD. can not take the place of the poet reading it(3)Which of the following statements may the author agree with?A. The most important teaching goal is to have students read and recite every poem they learn.B. Poetry is the foundation of all languages and literature courses.C. The teaching of poetry should have been much more stressed.D. Every English teacher is supposed to convey their love of poetry to their students.【答案】(1)D(2)A(3)C【解析】【分析】本文是一篇议论文,作者阐述了诗歌教学的重要性。

Science is finally beginning to embrace animals who were, for a long time, considered second-class citizens. As Annie Potts of Canterbury University has noted, chickens distinguish among one hundred chicken faces and recognize familiar individuals even after months of separation. When given problems to solve, they reason: hens trained to pick colored buttons sometimes choose to give up an immediate food reward for a slightly later (and better) one. Healthy hens may aid friends, and mourn when those friend die.Pigs respond meaningful to human symbols. When a research team led by Candace Croney at Penn State University carried wooden blocks marked with X and O symbols around pigs, only the O carriers offered food to the animals. The pigs soon ignored the X carriers in favor of the O's. Then the team switched from real-life objects to T-shirts printed with X or O symbols. Still, the pigs walked only toward the O-shirted people: they had transferred their knowledge to a two-dimensional format, a not inconsiderable feat of reasoning.I've been guilty of prejudiced expectations, myself. At the start of my career almost four decades ago, I was firmly convinced that monkeys and apes out-think and out-feel other animals. They're other primates(灵长目动物), after all, animals from our own mammalian(灵长目动物) class. Fairly soon, I came to see that along with our closest living relatives, whales too are masters of cultural learning, and elephants express profound joy and mourning with their social companions. Long-term studies in the wild on these mammals helped to fuel a viewpoint shift in our society: the public no longer so easily accepts monkeys made to undergo painful procedure in laboratories, elephants forced to perform in circuses, and dolphins kept in small tanks at theme parks.Over time, though, as I began to broaden out even further and explore the inner lives of fish, chickens, pigs, goats, and cows, 1 started to wonder: Will the new science of "food animals" bring an ethical (伦理的) revolution in terms of who we eat? In other words, will our ethics start to catch up with the development of our science?Animal activists are already there, of course, committed to not eating these animals. But what about the rest of us? Can paying attention to the thinking and feeling of these animals lead us to make changes in who we eat?(1)According to Annie Potts, hens have the ability of .A. interactionB. analysisC. creationD. abstraction(2)The research into pigs shows that pigs .A. learn letters quicklyB. have a good eyesightC. can build up a good relationshipD. can apply knowledge to new situations(3)Paragraph 4 is mainly about .A. the similarities between mammals and humansB. the necessity of long-term studies on mammalsC. a change in people's attitudes towards animalsD. a discovery of how animals expressthemselves(4)What might be the best title for the passage?A. The Inner Lives of Food AnimalsB. The Lifestyles of Food AnimalsC. Science Reports on Food AnimalsD. A Revolution in Food Animals【答案】(1)B(2)D(3)C(4)A【解析】【分析】本文是一篇议论文,论述了动物也有情感有思想,有一定的分析推理能力。

Online, communication is cheap and prices are readily Googled. There is a similar temptation to think that physical shops no longer matter.Young consumers love their Amazon deliveries. But what works best is the seamless combination of the digital and physical worlds.Remember those online-only influencer-backed beauty brands like Glossier, which took the world by storm during the pandemic? It turns out that they struggle to get repeat business and have had to pair up with physical retailers. If we want to succeed,we need to offer the best of both physical and virtual worlds.Gen Z will consider a brand’s sustainability and social impact, but considering something isn’t surrendering to it.They are never brand-slaved.It is chiefly youngsters who buy cheap“fast-fashion”outfits to wear once and then send to landfill. Also, youngsters care less for consumer boycotts than its virtue-signaling parents, thus open to various brands. No wonder, most brands originate from youngsters with duel identities of producers and consumers. What determines the shopping mode of a generation is their mindset. In Gen Z,lies are easily exposed online, where everyone loves a takedown and hates hypocrisy. We are people just as our young customers are and people will always buy sincerity.68.What is the article primarily warning readers against in marketing?A.The excessive use of digital advertising and ignoring traditional media.1.B【详解】考查定语从句。

A sad one that can move anyone and cause one to think of our life we are leading. The plot is about a number of students who are taught by Williams about life. They are taught how to enjoy themselves. This ends up causing great controversy among the heads of the school. The students are terrific and even the dialogue is great. What this film showed me was that we have the responsibility and the joy of being alive in this planet. That we are dust, and we will go back to it, so we have precious little time to make a difference. That we have a moral obligation to "seize the day, and make our lives extraordinary" That the world, basically is ours. That the only limitations are within ourselves, and that we owe it to us to fight, to rebel against conformity, to change what we hate and keep what we love. That living in this world is a beautiful responsibility, and that only cowards dare not to change it for the better. This is the story of students at the respected “Welton academe”, a preparatory school in Vermont. Such schools in Vermont. Such schools were(and often still are ) very conservative institutions that serve as high schools for parents who insist on sending their children to the best university. Welton, like many prep schools, admitted only boys. The movie takes place in 1959. Mr. Keating, a young and exciting English and poetry teacher, who is determined to teach his students to life with absolute passion. Mr. Keating , using poetry as his vehicle teaches his students to challenge the institutions around them. The energetic man asks his student to call him Mr. Keating or ‘O Captain My Captain!’ It’s written by a poet named Walt Whitman about Abraham Lincoln. The private Welton Academy is a lifeless, completely cut off the world school. You will find the freedom of spirits ,the revelation of souls and the complicated story happened between the young studentsThe movie was only a group of rebellious students rebelling against traditional education. Right in this time, a non-traditional person happened to become their teacher. The conclusion was that the non-traditional yielded to the traditional , and the really prevailed against the romantic. The amazing behavior at the end of the movie was not shallow affectation, but a great shock of audiences’ hearts. The boys standing on the desks bid the most formal farewell to their best teacher with the firmest expression in their eyes. The kettledrums ringing, the bagpipes playing, the movie reached its climaxThe second view of the movie left me a clear train of thoughts and a clear tenet. Every class given by Keating was a wonderful performance, greatly inspiring his adolescent students to emancipate themselves from such ideas as the study only and study for a good school. He knew what they needed most was to understand life and broaden their mind and vision so that they could shake off worldly affairs as fame and wealth and enjoy the life, love and poetic purity. His romantic enlightenment had no doubt wielded a profound influence on the boys’ mind and s oul. The plot is about a number of students who are taught by Williams about life. They are taught how to enjoy themselves. This ends up causing great controversy among the heads of the school.

Unit 2 Poems

Doctors in hospital emergency rooms often see accidental poisonings. A frightened parent arrives with a child who swallowed a cleaning liquid. Or perhaps the harmful substance is a medicine. Or it might be a chemical product meant to kill insects. These are common causes of accidental poisoning. In cases like this, seek medical help as soon as possible. Save the container of whatever caused the poisoning. And look on the container for information about anything that stops the effects of the poison. Save anything expelled from the mouth of the victim. That way, doctors can examine it.Millions of people know a way to save a person who is choking on something trapped in the throat. The method is commonly known as the Heimlich Maneuver or abdominal thrusts(腹部按压), which you can do by getting directly behind a sitting or standing person. Put your arms around the victim’s waist. Close one hand to form a ball. Place it over the upper part of the stomach, below the ribs. Place the other hand on top. Then push forcefully inward and upward. Repeat the abdominal thrusts until the object is expelled from the mouth. For someone who is pregnant or very fat, place your hands a little higher than with normal abdominal thrusts.Red Cross experts say taking these steps can save many lives. But they also warn that abdominal thrusts are not for people who have almost drowned. They say use of the method could delay other ways to re-start breathing in the victim. Abdominal thrusts should be used only in cases where a near-drowning victim is choking on an object. To learn more about first aid, ask a hospital or organization like a Red Cross or Red Crescent Society for information. There may be training classes offered in your area.1. According to the first paragraph, which of the following is NOT the common cause of accidental poisonings?A. A harmful medicineB. A cleaning liquidC. Poisonous insectsD. Dangerous pesticide(杀虫剂)2. The underlined word “expelled” in paragraph 2 can be replaced by “_________ ”.A. coming outB. taking upC. going awayD. getting down3. Why abdominal thrusts are not for people who have almost drowned?A. Because people are unwilling to attempt rescue effortsB. Because it is hard to performC. Because it is no need to do soD. Because it could hold up other ways to re-start breathing in the victim4. What is the author’s purpose in writing this text?A. To promote medical researchB. To share some knowledge about first aidC. To show how to perform abdominal thrustsC.To help people deal with accidental poisoning【语篇解读】本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了意外中毒的主要原因及急救方法。

The amazing behavior at the end of the movie was not shallow affectation, b ut a great shock of audiences’ hearts. The boys standing on the desks bid the most formal farewell to their bestteacher with the firmest expression in their eyes. He knew what they needed most was to understand life and broaden their mind andvision so that they could shake off worldly affairs as fame and wealth and enjoy the life, love and poetic purity. His romantic enlightenment had no doubt wielded a profound influence on the boys’ mind and soul. The plot is about a number of students who are taught by Williams about life. They are taught how to enjoy themselves. This ends up causing great controversy among the heads of the school.

This education is not simply to impart knowledge, but to tell the students to acknowledge themselves, understanding the world. Students are not been taught any knowledge, which can be stimulated out . Some people are born to talent that can be gradually Been excavated in the education process, but process seems long and uncertain . When this teacher -Keating -appears, the students had been luckily singled out, with a passionate and memorable teenager terms, despite the end of the story with some regrets.
