There was a young woman who took great pride in the flowers in her garden. She had been raised by her grandmother who taught her to love and care for flowers as she herself had done. So, her flower garden was second to none. Her neighbors showed great admiration for her handiness.

One day while looking through a flower catalogue,a picture of a plant immediately caught her eye.She had never seen blooms on a flower like that before.“I have to have it,” she said to herself, and she immediately ordered it.

When it arrived, she already had a place prepared to plant it.She planted it near the base of a stone wall in her yard.It grew vigorously(茁壮地),with beautiful green leaves all over it,but there were no blooms.Part of it even extended to the backyard of her neighbor's through the wall. She thought her neighbor would complain about the vine(藤).Day after day she continued to take care of it,water it,feed it,and she even talked to it attempting to coax (哄) it to bloom. But,it was in vain.

One morning weeks later,as she stood before the vine, she thought how disappointed she was that her plant had not bloomed. She was giving considerable thought to cutting it down and planting something else in its place.

It was at this point that her neighbor called round.“Thank y ou so much! You can't imagine how much I have enjoyed the blooms of that vine you planted.” The young woman walked through the gate into her neighbor's yard. She was surprised.Led by her neighbor, she saw that on the other side of the wall the vine was covered with blooms.

答案

Paragraph 1:

There were indeed the most beautiful blooms she had ever seen. The vine had run through the cracks of the wall.It had not flowered on her side of the wall;it had flowered richly on the other side. She was not cheated. The flowers were

as beautiful as the picture had shown. Her patient effort on this plant finally paid off.Although the blooms were not in her yard, she was satisfied. She started to understand that the green leaves and the long vine just mean the blooms.

Paragraph 2:

Not seeing the good result of your labor does not mean your work is effectless. The woman is not alone. Many people have made such a

mistake. They take it for granted that seeing is believing—if they can't see the result of their labor, they will say their labor is not effective as expected and they will feel disappointed. The story tells us that we should be optimistic about our work.

Mrs_Thompson,an elementary teacher told the children a lie,as she stood in front of her 5th grade class on the very first day of school.Like most teachers, she looked at her students and said that she loved them all the same. But that was impossible, because there was a little boy named Teddy, who didn't play well with the other children, whose clothes were messy and who constantly needed a bath. And Teddy could be unpleasant.

At the school where Mrs Thompson taught, she was required to review each child's past records and she put Teddy's off until last. However, when she reviewed his file, she was in for a surprise.

Teddy's first grade teacher wrote,“Teddy is a bright_child with a ready laugh. He does his homework neatly and has good manners...he is a joy to be around.”

His second grade teacher wrote,“Teddy is an excellent_student,well liked by his classmates, but he is troubled because his mother has a terminal illness and his life at home must be a struggle.”

His third grade teacher wrote,“His mother's death has been hard on him.He tries to do his best but his father doesn't show much interest and his home life will soon affect him if some steps aren't taken.”

Teddy's fourth grade teacher wrote,“Teddy is withdrawn and doesn't sh ow much interest in school. He doesn't have many friends and sometimes sleeps in class.”

By now,Mrs Thompson realized the problem and she was ashamed of herself. She felt even worse when her students brought her Christmas presents, wrapped in beautiful ribbons and bright paper, except for Teddy's.His present was clumsily wrapped in the heavy, brown paper that he got from a grocery bag.

Mrs Thompson took pains to open it in the middle of the other

presents. Some of the children started to laugh when she found a rhinestone (莱茵石,一种假钻石) bracelet with some of the stones missing and a bottle that was one quarter full of perfume. She stopped the children's laughter when she exclaimed how pretty the bracelet was, putting it on,and spraying some of the perfume on her wrist.

Carl was a quiet man.He didn't talk much.He would always greet you with a big smile and a firm handshake.Even after living in our neighborhood for over

50 years,no one could really say they knew him very well.

After retirement,he volunteered to take care of the church garden. One day,he was just finishing his watering for the day when three gang members approached him. Ignoring their attempt to attack him,he simply asked,“Would you like a drink from the hose(水管)?”

The tallest and toughest-looking of the three said,“Yeah, sure,” with a malevolent(恶意的) little smile. As Carl offered the hose to him,the other two grabbed Carl's arm, throwing him down. They robbed him of his retirement watch and his wallet, and then fled.

Although the minister of the church had witnessed the attack from his window,he couldn't get there fast enough to stop it.“Carl, are you okay? Are

you hurt?” the minister kept asking as he helped Carl to his feet.

“Just some naughty kids.I hope they'll wise up someday,” Carl said.He bent to pick up the hose.He adjusted the nozzle again and started to water.

A few weeks later the three returned.Carl again offered them a drink from his hose. This time they didn't rob him. They wrenched the hose from his hand and wetted him from head to foot with the icy water. When they had finished their bullying him, they went down the street, laughing at what they had just done.

Carl just watched them. Then he picked up his hose, and went on with his watering.

A few days later,as Carl was working in the garden,he saw the tall leader of the attackers reaching down for him.He prepared himself for the expected attack.“Don't worry, old man,I'm not gonna hurt you this time.” The young man spoke softly and pulled a bag from his pocket and handed it to Carl.“It's your stuff back.Even the money in your wallet.”

The man shifted his feet, seeming embarrassed.“I learned something from you,” he said.“I r an with that gang and hurt people like you.Every time we came and did something to you, instead of yelling and fighting back, you tried to give us a drink. You didn't hate us for hating you.You kept showing love against our hate.”

Paragraph 1:

Carl died one cold day after Christmas that winter. Many people attended his funeral in spite of the weather. In particular the minister noticed a tall young

man who he didn't know sitting quietly in a distant corner of the church. The following spring a notice was put up.It read,“Person needed to care for Carl's garden.” One day a knock was heard at the minister's office door.

Paragraph 2:

Opening the door, the minister saw a familiar young man holding the notice.“I believe this is my job,if you'll have me,” the young man said. The minister recognized him as the same young man who had returned the watch and wallet to Carl.He knew that Carl's kindness had turned this man's life around. As the minister handed him the keys to the garden shed,he said,“Yes,go and take care of Carl's garden and honor him.”

I remember my first Christmas adventure with Grandma.I was just a kid.

I went to town on my bike to visit her on the day when my big sister told me,“There is no Santa Claus, and even dummies know that!”

My grandma always told the truth, always.I fled to her that day because I knew she would stand on my side.

Hearing my story,Grandma was ready for me.“No Santa Claus?” she

s norted.“Ridiculous! Don't believe it.Such rumors have been going around for years,and it makes me mad,plain mad!Now,put on your coat,and let's go.”

“Go? Go where,Grandma?” I asked. We drove to Kerby's General Store. As we walked through its doors,Grandma handed me ten dollars. That was a bundle in those days.“Take the money”,she said,“and buy something for someone who needs it.” Then she went away and waited in the car.

I was only eight years old.I'd often gone shopping with my mother, but never had I shopped for anything all by myself. The store seemed big and crowded, full of people scrambling(抢夺) to finish their Christmas shopping.

For a few moments I just stood there, confused, holding that ten-dollar bill, wondering what to buy and who on earth to buy it for. Then I suddenly thought of Bobby Decker. He was a kid with bad breath and messy hair.Bobby Decker

didn't have a coat.I knew that because he never went out to play during the winter. His mother always wrote a note, telling the teacher that he had a cough, but all we kids knew that Bobby Decker didn't have a cough; he didn't have a good coat.Yes,I would buy Bobby Decker a coat!

My eyes were fixed on a red coat which looked real warm and he would like that.

“Is this a Christmas present for someone?” the lady behind the counter asked kindly,as I laid my ten dollars down.“Yes,Ma'am,” I replied shyly.“It's for Bobby.”

Paragraph 1:

That evening,Grandma helped me wrap the coat in Christmas paper and ribbons.Grandma drove me through the crowded street and finally we arrived at Bobby Decker's home.Grandma told me to knock at the door.I laid down the present, knocked at the door three times and quickly ran away to hide behind the tree nearby.Soon Bobby Decker came out, looking around. He found the present and happily took it home.

Paragraph 2:

Fifty years hasn't reduced the excitement of those moments.I still remember holding my breath when seeing Bobby Decker came out to pick up

his present. We waited until he went back.It was not until then that I realized that Santa Claus was among us.He did exist. It was ridiculous to think there was no Santa Claus in the world.I often tell this story to my children, telling them Santa visits us during Christmas time, when people should show kindness to others.

The two men had been at sea for two months. While Salvador had become accustomed to catching and eating the animals available to them,Cordoba's mental health and physical health had begun to decline.Once he got sick from eating raw seabirds,he refused to eat at all.His own depression, fear and malnutrition finally killed him, leaving Salvador alone on the boat.

One day, after a terrible storm,Salvador found the sky was suddenly filled with shorebirds. He knew that he was heading for land at last.He must have been close. There,in the distance was a green Pacific atoll(环礁).It looked small and wild, but it was dry land and would likely have food and shelter.

Once upon a time there lived a stone cutter who was dissatisfied with his life. One day,on his way to work,he passed by a beautiful house. It belonged to a rich merchant.

From where he stood,he saw fine possessions, honorable guests, and plenty of workers and servants all set to work.He became envious and deeply wished to have everything the wealthy and powerful merchant did.

Suddenly, the stone cutter changed into the merchant taking over his mind and body.He was aware of the merchant's innermost feelings, thoughts and memories. He felt the joy of owning all the luxuries in the world. He knew the pleasure of holding such a respectable position in the society. Many honored him.

After a few days of enjoying the merchant's life,he saw a king being carried in a luxurious chair accompanied by attendants, soldiers and

servants.Everyone, despite of their power and wealth, was forced to bow before this figure that was worshiped as God.

After seeing this,he realized he had been mistaken about the merchant's

power and status. In a split second,he moved into the body of the king, mighty and fearless. Then he knew what it felt like to be praised and glorified by the entire kingdom,to hold the power to pardon or take a man's life and what it was like to be respected by kings from other lands.

One day,on a hot summer noon,he was extremely uneasy. His overweight body made the heat even more intolerable. He looked up at the sun and thought about how it was absolutely unaffected by his presence. He then swiftly became the sun, shining with glory, the source of life and strength of every living creature on the planet.

Paragraph 1:

He continued to radiate until a massive storm cloud gathered below him blocking his rays. The storm cloud then burst into pouring rain.Seeing this,he became the cloud. He felt the incredible power of its existence as it could flood everything that it wished to.Not too late did he realize that the entire root of his power was yet another force—wind. The strength of the rain was not worth mentioning without the wind. And so he became it,blowing off the roofs of houses, and uprooting trees and everything else that came in its way.

Paragraph 2:

There was yet another force that faded the wind's ego—a huge towering rock. The wind would low against it with a speed and force of the ultimate strength. The rock would stand still and unmoved. He then became it,a solid, dense, immortal and powerful substance on earth. After a while,he heard a

The sea's surprise

Jim and Andy walked along the beach, looking for an adventure. They joked that some day they would find a talking fish or a mermaid or a bottle with a treasure map inside. So far they had only found shells and rocks and seaweed.Today though was different. The boys felt excited.

Sea crabs scampered on the rocks.Up one side and down the other. They were quick and lively. The tide didn't seem to ever wash them away. Then Jim saw a fish.It was stranded on the beach, just flopping around.

“Can it talk?” Andy asked.

“It looks like any other fish,” Jim said.He picked it up gently and carried it to the water.

“Do you think it will grant us any wishes?” Andy laughed.

The boys watched as the silver fish sped off through the

water.“Nope.Maybe next time.” Jim grinned.

As the two friends walked farther down the beach they came upon a bottle. It was green with a cork in the mouth.

“Our luck will change.Does it have a map inside or a genie?” joked Andy.

Andy reached down and picked up the bottle. He rubbed it.Nothing happened. He pulled on the cork.Nothing happened. He shook it.Nothing happened.

“Try the cork again.I bet the genie is waiting for us to release him.Or we'll find a treasure map and have a real adventure,” Jim exclaimed.

Andy tugged again on the cork.He wiggled it back and forth. He twisted it around and around. Finally it popped out without breaking.Andy shook the bottle.Nothing came out.Looking inside he couldn't see anything.Jim also looked and shook his head.Empty.

“It's just an old wine bottle,” Jim complained. He grabbed the bottle and tossed it back onto the sand.

I have a daily routine.Every night,I end my hour-long subway one stop early, just so I can eat at my favorite diner. But one night last month,as I stepped off the No.6 train and onto a nearly empty platform,my evening took an unexpected turn.

I was walking toward the stairs when a teenage boy approached and pulled out a knife. He wanted my money,so I just gave him my wallet and told him,“Here you go.” As the teen began to walk away,I told him,“Hey,wait a minute. You forgot something. If you're going to be robbing people for the rest of the night, you might as well take my coat to keep you warm.” He asked me,“Why are you doing this?” I replied,“If you're willing to risk your freedom for a few dollars, then I guess you must really need the money.I mean, all I wanted to do was get dinner and if you really want to join me...hey,you're more than welcome.” I just felt maybe he really needed help.

The teen and I went into the diner and sat in a booth. The manager, the dishwashers, and the waiters all came by to say hi.

The kid was like,“You know everybody here.Do you own this place?”

“No,I just eat here a lot,” I told the teen.He said,“But you're even nice to the dishwashers.”

I replied,“Well, haven't you been taught you should be nice to everybody?”

“Yeah, but I didn't think people actually behaved that way,” the teen said.

Paragraph 1:

I asked him what he wanted out of life. But he just had almost a sad face. The teen couldn't answer me—or he didn't want to.When the bill arrived,I told the teen,“Look,I guess you're going to have to pay for this dinner because you have my money and I can't pay for this.So if you give me my wallet back,I'll gladly treat you.” The tee n didn't even think about it and returned the wallet.I gave him $20.

Paragraph 2:

I asked for something in return for the $20.So I asked for the teen's knife and he gave it to me.Afterward, when I told my mother what had happened, she said,“You're the type of kid that if someone asked you for the time, you would give them your watch.” I figure, you know,if you treat people right, you can only hope that they treat you right. It's as simple as it gets in this complicated world.
