(第23-30题,每题1分,共8分)Interview with Allan Gray1 I was working for a multinational company in the early 1980s, and my brother asked me if I was interested in going into partnership with him to set up a language school. I’d always wanted to work for myself, and I was a bit fed up with working for someone else, so I said yes. Primarily, I wanted the freedom to make my own decisions, I wanted room to be creative, and also I wanted to be able to get the credit and keep the profits if things went wrong. These things are not possible if you work as an employee in a large organization.2 I had to borrow money to help start the business, but we were lucky because we also had some outside capital to put into the business. These days it can be really hard to persuade banks to lend money to people who want to start a company, so we were fortune. It was fairly easy to set up the business, because we had a very clear idea of what we wanted to do. The problem was, all our preconception(预想)about what it would be like to run a business were wrong. We made lots of mistakes, and we almost went bankrupt(破产的`) at the beginning .At one point, we only had two students in the school.3 Far too long! We lost money for the first four years and, asI was saying, we nearly went out of business. It took quite a longtime to start making profit. The best thing we did, through. was that we hired some really good people to work for us. In fact, some of those people are still working for us, 24 years later. Now we’re doing well, but it was very risky at first.4 One is financial constrain(约束). It can be very tough. I think all small business have cashflow problems—it often takes a long time to get paid by your customers. The second big problem is marketing. It takes a lot of funds to market your business, and you have to get your name known and build a reputation. But the biggest challenge is managing the people. All businesses are about people, and you have to learn how to deal with all kinds of people-and I think we’ve been extremely good at getting the best of our staff.23.Paragraph 1_____A.Strategies in expanding a small businessB.Right people to run a businessC.Time-consuming experience of being successfulD.Challenges of running a businessE.Difficulties in starting the businessF.Reasons for working for oneself【答案】F24.Paragraph 2_____A.Strategies in expanding a small businessB.Right people to run a businessC.Time-consuming experience of being successfulD.Challenges of running a businessE.Difficulties in starting the businessF.Reasons for working for oneself【答案】E25.Paragraph 3_____A.Strategies in expanding a small businessB.Right people to run a businessC.Time-consuming experience of being successfulD.Challenges of running a businessE.Difficulties in starting the businessF.Reasons for working for oneself【答案】C26.Paragraph 4_____A.Strategies in expanding a small businessB.Right people to run a businessC.Time-consuming experience of being successfulD.Challenges of running a businessE.Difficulties in starting the businessF.Reasons for working for oneself【答案】D27.If you made a bad decision as a boss, you had_____.A.to lose your houseB.to manage your employeesC.to keep independentD.to lend you moneyE.to take the responsibility for itF.to make profit【答案】E28.The difficult thing to start a business is to persuade banks_____.A.to lose your houseB.to manage your employeesC.to keep independentD.to lend you moneyE.to take the responsibility for itF.to make profit【答案】D29.If you hire the right people, you'll probably be able_____.A.to lose your houseB.to manage your employeesC.to keep independentD.to lend you moneyE.to take the responsibility for itF.to make profit【答案】F30.Besides financial and marketing challenges, you must know how_____.A.to lose your houseB.to manage your employeesC.to keep independentD.to lend you moneyE.to take the responsibility for itF.to make profit【答案】B四、阅读理解下面有3篇短文,每篇短文后有5道题。

第三十五篇 Going Her Own WayWhen she was twelve, Maria made her first important decision about the course of her life. She decided that she wanted to continue her education. Most girls from middle-class families choseto stay home after primary school, though some attended private Catholic "finishing" schools. There they leamed a little about music, art, needlework, and how to make polite conversation. This was not the sort of education that interested Maria - or her mother. By this time, she hadbegun to take her studies more seriously. She read constantly and brought her books everywhere. One time she even brought her math book to the theater and tried to study in the dark.Maria knew that she wanted to go on leaming in a serious way. That meant attending thepublic high school, something that very few girls did. In Italy at the time, there were two. types ofhigh schools: the "classical" schools and the "technical" schools. In the classical schools, thestudents followed a very traditional program of studies, with courses in Latin and Greek languageand literature, and Italian literature and history'. The few girls who continued studying afterprimary school usually chose these schools.Maria, however, wanted to attend a technical school. The technical schools were more modernthan the classical schools and they offered courses in modern languages, mathematics, science, andaccounting2. Most people - including Maria's father_. believed that girls would never be able tounderstand these subjects. Furthermore, they did not think it was proper for girls to study them.Maria did not care if it was proper or not. Math and science were the subjects that interestedher most. But before she could sign up for the technical school, she had to win her father'sapproval. She finally did, with her mother's help, though for many years after, there was tensionin the family. Maria's father continued to oppose her plans, while her mother helped her.In 1883, at age thirteen, Maria entered the "Regia Scuola Tecnica Michelangelo Buonarroti" inRome. Her experience at this school is difficult for us to imagine. Though the courses includedmodern subjects, the teaching methods were verytraditional. Leaming consisted of memorizing longlists of facts and repeating them back to the teacher. Students were not supposed to ask questionsor think for themselves in any way. Teachers-were very demanding, discipline in the classroomwas strict, and punishment was severe for those who failed to achieve or were disobedient.词汇:discipline /'disiplin/ n. 纪律,学科,训练,惩罚 punishment [ˈpʌnɪʃmənt] n. 惩罚,严厉对待,虐待注释:1. In the classical schools, the students followed a very traditional program of studies, with coursesin Latin and Greek language and literature; and Italian literature and history.在传统学校中,学生们都依照一种非常传统的教学方式学习,包含拉丁语、希腊语与文学课,还有意大利文学与历史。

I’d always wanted to work for myself, and I was a bit fed up with working for someone else, so I said yes. Primarily, I wanted the freedom to make my own decisions, I wanted room to be creative, and also I wanted to be able to get the credit and keep the profits if things went wrong. These things are not possible if you work as an employee in a large organization.I had to borrow money to help start the business, but we were lucky because we also had some outside capital to put into the business. These days it can be really hard to persuade banks to lend money to people who want to start a company, so we were fortunate. It was fairly easy to set up the business, because we had a very clear idea of what we wanted to do. The problem was, all our preconceptions about what it would be like to run a business were wrong. We made lots of mistakes, and we almost went bankrupt at the beginning. At one point, we only had two students in the school.Far too long. We lost money for the first four years and, as I was saying, we nearly went out of business. It took quite a long time to start making profit. The best thing we did, though, was that we hired some really good people to work for us. In fact, some of those people are still working for us, 24 years later. Now we’re doing well, but it was very risky at first. One is financial constraint. It can be very tough. I think all small businesses problems-it often takes a long time to get paid by your customers. The and big problem is marketing. It takes a lot of funds to market your business, and you to get your name known and build a reputation. But the biggest challenge is the people. All businesses are about people, and you have to learn how to all kinds of people –and I think we’ve been extremely good at getting the best staff.23. paragraph 124. paragraph 225. paragraph 326. paragraph 4A. strategies in expanding a small businessB. right people to run a businessC. time-consuming experience of being successfulD. challenges of running a businessE. difficulties in starting the businessF. reasons for working for oneself27. if you made a bad decision as a boss, you had28. the difficult thing to start a business is to persuade banks29. if you hire the right people, you’ll probably be able30. besides financial and marketing challenges, you must know howA. to lose your houseB. to manage your employeesC. to keep independentD. to lend you moneyE. to take the responsibility for itF. to make profit第四部分阅读理解第1篇Why Buy Shade-Grown Coffee?(为什么要购买蔽光生长的咖啡? 综合BC级均有)When people argue about whether coffee is good for health, they're usually thinking of the health of the coffee drinker. Is it food for your heart? Does it increase blood pressure? Does it help you concentrate? However, coffee affects the health of the human population in other ways, too.Traditionally, coffee bushes were planted under the canopy(树冠)of taller indigenous(土生土长的)trees. However, more and more farmers in Latin America are deforesting the land to grow full-sun coffees. At first, this increases production because more coffee b ushes can be planted if there aren’t any trees. With increased production come increased profits.Unfortunately, deforesting for coffee production immediately decreases local-wildlife habitat. Native birds nest and hide from predators(捕食者)in the tall trees and migrating birds rest there.Furthermore, in the long term, the full-sun method also damages the ecosystem because more chemical fertilizers and pesticides are needed to grow the coffee. The fertilizers and pesticides kill insects that eat coffee plant, but then the birds eat the poisoned insects and also die. The chemicals kill or sicken other animals as well, and can even enter the water that people will eventually drink.Fortunately, farmers in Central and South America are beginning to grow more coffee bushes in the shade. We can support these farmers by buying coffee with such labels as "shade grown" and "bird friendly." Sure, these varieties might cost a little more. But we're paying for the health of the birds, the land, ourselves, and the planet. I think it's worth it.31. They can leave you embarrassed and without energy. However, crying is a fact of life, and tears are very useful. These create a film over the eye's surface. This film contains a substance that protects your eyes against infection.Tears relieve stress, but we tend to fight them for all sorts of reasons."People worry about showing their emotions. They're afraid that once they lose control, they'll never get it back," explains psychologist Dorothy Rowe." As adults we still fear the consequences of showing emotions."Almost any emotion-good or bad, happy or sad-can cause tears. Crying is a way that we release built-up emotions. Tears help you when you feel you are ready to explode because of very strong feelings. When some people become very stressed, however, they can't cry. They may be feeling shock, anger, fear, or grief, but they repress the emotion."Everyone has the need to cry," says? psychotherapist Vera Diamond. Sometimes in therapy sessions, patients participate in crying exercises. Diamond says it's best to cry in safe, private places, like under the bedcovers or in the car. That's because many people get uncomfortable when others cry in front of them. In fact, they may be repressing their own need to cry.In certain situations, such as at work, tears are not appropriate. "But once you are safely behind closed doors, don't just cry," Diamond says. She suggests that you act out the whole situation again and be as noisyand angry as you like. It will help you feel better."And," she adds," once your tears have released the stress, you can begin to think of logical ways to deal with the problem."Tears are a sign of our ability to feel. But choice can also 56 something of a problem. With over 400 brands of shampoo on the market, how does the consumer57 hold of the information necessary to choose between them? For some people the solution is to buy only well-known brands, while others are happy to be 58 by advertising. There is evidence,59 that for some people the 60 of choice available to them in britain’s consumer society is actually a 61 of anxiety and stress.
