Louis Braille was born in the nineteenth century. When he was three years old, an accident at his father’s workshop left him blind. As a young boy, Louis was hard-working and clever. His teachers suggested that he should go to the National Institute for Blind Youths. ①At that time, this was the only school for the blind in France. At the institute, Louis was eager to learn to read and write. To his great disappointment, the few books he found at the institute used raised (凸起的) letters. This method of reading was difficult for the blind, because they had to feel slowly each letter. ②到他们摸到句子末尾时,他们已经忘记开头是关于什么了。

Louis wanted to develop an easier reading system for the blind. His idea of such a system came from Charles Barbier, a French army officer. Barbier had invented a system called “Night Writing”, which was made up of dots and dashes. Soldiers used this system to communicate with one another during the night. Louis adapted (改编) this system for his own use. He produced a simpler system based on dots. For example, “A” is represented by a single dot. Many blind students found this system much easier to use. This came to be known as the “Braille” system. Today, millions of blind people are able to read, thanks to the work of a young blind man.任务一:将文中划线的句子①翻译成汉语。

The festival spread to China as early as the 1980s and was widely accepted. Why did a foreign festival become popular in China? In fact,Chinese traditional culture has always encouraged filial(孝顺的) devotion to parents. There are many stories which show filial respect in ancient China. For example, the story of “Taste Liquid(液体的) Medicine for Mother”tells us the filial virtue(美德) of Emperor Wen of the Western Han dynasty. His mother had been sick for three years. He often stayed up by her bedside and cared for her day and night. He tasted the liquid medicine first before she drank it. Also, mother love is a repeated subject in Chinese ancient poems, like “Song of the Parting Son” by Meng Jiao,a poet of theTang dynasty. Now this poem is still a must in the school textbooks. Children in China are brought up with the education of filial devotion. On special days, people often use roses or forgetmenotes to express love. Carnations are considered as the perfect flowers for mothers around the world, but few know that China has its own for mothers—the tiger lily.Love for mothers can have different ways of expression. It's a chance for me to get away fromreal life. There's nothing better than being lost in a story unless,of course, someone decides to break down the moment.Whether at a cinema or a huge theatre, someone usually decides to treat the place like their own home! There is an accepted way of behaving at the cinema which some people don't seem to understand. To start with, some people always turn up late, causing you to rise from your seat to allow them to go past. Then, when you want to enjoy the surroundsound effects, someone begins to enjoy their drinks and popcorn and thus makes a lot of noises. And what I can't stand most is people who decide to chat to their friends, sometimes not even about the film.I'm not alone in this situation. Simon Mayo,a film critic at the BBC,experienced a “new low” during a film. He says,“ The woman in front of me got a mirror out, then her boyfriend got a phone out and used the light on it to allow her to do her makeup!”Simon has helped to create a list of rules on how moviegoers should behave at the cinema. One of them is no use of mobile phones, and another is not to take your shoes off—a most serious offence(冒犯) !Of course, when we have paid for a ticket,we feel it is our right to relax and enjoy the film in the way we want to,but we mustn't forget our fellow moviegoers who want to enjoy the cinematic experience, too. The best choice for anyone wanting to break the rules of cinema manners is to get a DVD and watch it at home. But we all know that the best way to enjoy the art of cinematography is on the big screen.________.What about you? What annoys you about other people at the cinema?( )1. Why does the writer enjoy going to the cinema?A. It makes him feel like being at home.B. It gives him a moment to stay away from real life.C. He prefers watching the films on big screens.D. He wants to enjoy the cinematic experience.( )2. What is considered by Simon to be the rudest at a cinema?A. Using mobile phones.B. Chatting to their friends.C. Taking the shoes off.D. It's your choice!( )4. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?A. Popular CinemasB. A Serious ProblemC. Cinema MannersD. Within 12 days, they made more than 1,500 yuan.Among them, the oldest is 21 years old, while the youngest is just 10. They are all cousins in a big family and eight of them are from rural areas.“Compared to traveling, such social practice connects us and makes us learn how tough our parents are,” said Dalin,18,to the City Morning Post. Dalin,a senior high graduate, and her 12yearold brother Xiaolin came up with the idea. They learned to work hard to sell their veggies. Every morningthey had to wake up at 3 o'clock. Some of them went to the farmer'smarket to buy vegetables. Some of them went to the local market totake up a temporary stall(临时摊位). To lower the cost, they learnedto bargain(讲价) with the sellers. At about 6:30 am,they began to sell vegetables. They peddled(吆喝) loudly to attract(吸引) customers. After several days, they gotsome experience, too. For example,it was better to put vegetables in order and biggerones on top. When the vegetables are too heavy, they should give customers an extra plastic bag. When they finally packed up and went home, they had a small meeting. However, strictly speaking, Boxing Day is the first weekday after Christmas. Like Christmas Day, Boxing Day is a public holiday. This means it's a nonworking day in the whole of Britain. When Boxing Day falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the following Monday is the public holiday. The exact origin(起源) of the holiday is unclear. One of the thoughts is that during the Middle Ages, when great sailing ships were setting off to discover new land, a Christmas Box was placed by a priest (神父) on each ship. Those sailors who wanted to ensure a safe return would drop money into the box. It was sealed_up and kept on board until the ship came home safely. Then the box was handed over to the priest in the exchange for the saying of a Mass of thanks for the success of the sailing. The priest wouldn't open it to share the contents with the poor until Christmas. One more thought is about the “Alms Box”placed in every church on Christmas Day. Worshippers (做礼拜的人) put gifts for the poor into it. These boxes were always opened the day after Christmas, that is why that day became known as Boxing Day.Today, many businesses, organizations and families try to keep the traditional spirit of Boxing Day alive by donating (捐赠) their time, services and money to aid Food Banks, providing gifts for the poor, or helping families in need. Besides, spending time with family and shopping are popular Boxing Day activities now.( )1. If Christmas Day is on a Saturday, Boxing Day will be celebrated on ________.A. December 25thB. At the moment we're staying near Uluru—that's the aboriginal(土著) name for Ayers Rock. On the first day, we took a balloon tour over the rock, and I was surprised at how big it was: 3.6 kilometers long and 384 meters high. The colors of the rock are fantastic, and at different times of the day, they change from purple to red. The Aborigines are the first people of Australia, and the ancientaboriginal stories describe the spirits that created the world. Uluru is a center of Aboriginal culture. The Australians have many British relatives. That's why they're like us in many ways. Their family life is similar to ours, and they enjoy the same food and hobbies. The food and drink that most Australians like are grapes, lamb, ham and especially wine that they make in the south of the country. They love all sports, but football is the most popular. Most Australians live near the coast, so they also love going to the beach, swimming and surfing.Although it's December, it's summer over here. The sunshine is very bright, and near the coast the countryside is very green. There are lots of sheep in the fields and on the hills, but the outback(澳洲内陆) is more like a desert, full of rocks and sand. The next day after we arrived at Uluru, we went on a camel(骆驼) ride. The camel that I rode had a bad temper. When I sat on its back, it became very angry and refused me. Most of the surveytakers agreed that the summer vacation was a break from homework and they could relax.Alexis said, “At school, I'm really tired, so during the summer vacation I can read books and do many outdoor activities.”Amy is in high school. 2020中考英语大阅读组合练有答案一、阅读理解AGetting electricity has always been a problem for the 173 people living in Nuevo Saposoa, a small village in Peru, South America. However, things went from bad to worse in March 2015 after heavy rain damaged the only power cables in the area. The villagers were forced to use oil lamps, which are not only expensive but also dangerous because of the harmful gases they produce.Luckily, according to the researchers at the University of Technology (UT) in Lima, Peru heard about their problem and found a wonderful solution. They made a lamp that can be powered by plants and soil, both of which can be easily found in the Amazonian rainforest where the village lies. The lamp takes energy from a plant growing in a wooden box and uses it to light up an LED light bulb. While that may sound amazing and even impossible, the science behind the idea is quite simple. As plants create their food (using the sun's energy, water and chemicals from the soil), they also produce waste which they return to the soil. Tiny animals in the soil eat this waste and they produce electrons — the building blocks of electrical energy. The UT team put special sticks inside the soil to capture the energy and keep it in the lamp's batteries for later use. The researchers say a single charge can power a 50-watt LED light for two hours — enough time for local villagers to get their evening work done. The university gave ten Plant Lamps to the villagers of Nuevo Saposoa in October 2015. So far, they have been a huge success! Elmer Ramirez, the UT professor who invented the lamp, believes the Plant Lamp could help improve the lives of many people, especially small rainforest communities, 42% of whom have no electricity.()1、What are the problems of oil lamps according to Paragraph 1?A. B(民族风情及节日文化)We never had children of our own—just The White Prince—and I can tell you,he was enough of a family for anyone. He walked freely in the park just as we had planned he would, and ran after the deer and the rabbits whenever he felt like it: but he never did learn how to kill for himself. You can't teach old lions new tricks. He lived on deer mostly, and slept on a sofa in our living room—I wouldn't have him inside our bedroom,no matter(无论) how often Bertie asked. You know,I have to draw the line somewhere.Bertie's leg was never cured. When it was bad,he often needed a stick,or me,or the lion to lean on. It pained him a lot, especially on cold and wet days, and he never slept well. On Sundays the three of us would walk around the park together, and Bertie would sit on the top of Wood Hill with his arm around the lion's neck and I would fly kites. You know,I've always loved kites. And the lion liked to break them into pieces. The lion never showed any interest in running away, and even if he'd wanted to,the park wall was too high for an old lion to jump over. Wherever Bertie went,he wanted to go too. And if ever Bertie went out in the car, then he'd sit by me in the kitchen, and watch me with those great amber eyes, listening all the while for the sound of Bertie's car coming up the path to the front of the house. The lion was getting older. And he became weak in his legs and could see very little. He spent his last days sleeping at Bertie's feet. When he died,we buried(埋葬) him at the bottom of the hill. Bertie wanted it that way so he could always see the place from the kitchen window. I suggested Bertie plant a tree in case(以防) he forgot where the lion was. “I will, but he should get more than a tree,” Bertie said.Bertie was sad for weeks, months after the lion died. There was nothing I could do to cheer him or even comfort him. He would sit for hours in his room,or go off on long walks by himself. He seemed so shut away inside himself,so distant(遥远的). Try as I did,I could not reach him.…(Adapted from The Butterfly Lion)( )1. What did Bertie's wife mean by saying “I have to draw the line somewhere”?A. She would like the lion to sit by her.B. She didn't except Bertie to keep the lion.C. She didn't allow the lion to go into the bedroom.D. She wanted to stop the lion walking freely in the park.( )2. Which description about the lion is TRUE according to the story?A. He seldom broke kites into pieces.B. He could jump over the park wall.C. He became weak in his legs and eyes.D. He could kill deer or rabbits for himself.( )3. What can be inferred(推断) from the story?A. Bertie's leg was badly hurt by the lion.B. The lion wanted to leave Bertie's family.C. Bertie's wife would plant a tree for the lion.D. Bertie loved the lion more than his wife did.( )4. The story is mainly about ________.A. Bertie and his wife—the owners of the lionB. tricks that Bertie and his wife taught the lionC. the habits that the lion formed in Bertie's familyD. the last days the lion spent with Bertie and his wife二、任务型阅读Dear Annie,I’ve never written a letter to a newspaper before, I have just never felt the need to do such a thing. Correct weather reports date back only one century, but some trees can provide an exact record of the weather even further back.It is natural that a tree would grow best in a climate with plenty of sunlight and rainfall. It is also expected that little sunlight or rainfall would limit the growth of a tree. The change from a favorable to an unfavorable climate can be determined by reading the pattern of rings in a tree trunk. To find out the weather of ten years ago, count the rings of a tree trunk from the outside to the inside. If the tenth ring is far from the other rings, then it is certain that plenty of sunny and rainy weather occurred. If the rings are close together, then the climate was bad for the tree.Studying tree rings is important not only for the history of weather, but also for the history of man. In a region of New Mexico you can find only sand--no trees and no people. However, many centuries ago a large population lived there. They left suddenly. Why?A scientist studied patterns of dead tree rings which had grown there. He decided that the people had to leave because they had cut down all the trees. Trees were necessary to make fires and buildings. So, after the people destroyed the trees, they had to move.In this instance studying tree rings uncovered an exciting fact about the history of man.41.It is understood that in a favorable climate _____.A.tree rings grow close together B.tree rings grow far apartC.trees in New Mexico will grow big and tallD.people can cut down most of the trees in New Mexico42.Why did ancient people usually live where there were plenty of trees?A.Trees provided them with shades. B.Trees indicated plenty of sunlight and rainfall. C.Trees were materials for cooking and building houses.D.Trees provided them with fruit and food.43.Scientists are interested in studying tree rings because they can tell _____.A.a lot about what happened in history B.whether a particular tree was healthy or not C.whether people took good care of the trees or not D.how old the trees were44.By studying the dead tree rings in Mexico the scientist found out _____.A.where the people had to go B.what the people had to eatC.how the people left D.why the people had to leave45.The people had to leave the region of New Mexico because _____.A.they had cut down all the trees B.there were many trees thereC.they had no water D.bad weather stopped the growth of treesEWhat does it take to graduate from university? Some papers or high scores in exams? Well, these are not enough if you are a student at Tsinghua University.According to a new rule of the university, students must prove(证明) themselves in the swimming pool. They need to pass a swimming test of at least 50 meters, and those who fail the test will be required to take a swimming course throughout their school years. By the time they graduate, they will have known how to swim; otherwise they can’t graduate with their bachelor’s degrees(学士学位).The news made waves in Chinese social media(媒体). Some people praised the university for requiring a necessary skill that can save lives, and they also believed that the rule would help improve students’ health. However, others questioned if it was fair to expect those who come from inland cities(内陆城市) to be able to swim.In fact, this is not a new rule. Tsinghua University first made swimming a requirement in 1919 but later gave it up because the number of students became too large and there were not enough swimming pools in the school for them to learn swimming.Anyway, it is still good news that Chinese students’ health has become more and more valued. Why not just take this chance to learn one more life-saving ability?32. According to the passage, what does it take for a student to graduate from Tsinghua university?A. Some papers.B. High scores in exams.C. Passing a swimming test.D. All of the above.33. The underlined phrase “made waves” in Paragraph 3 most probably means _________.A. caused a heated discussionB. spread widelyC. made a requirementD. proved the rule34. Why did Tsinghua University once give up the rule?①Because many students failed the swimming test.② Because some people disagreed with the rule.③ Because there were too many students.④Because there were not enough swimming pools.A.①②B.②③C. ③④D.①④35. What is the passage mainly about?A. Different people hold different opinions about a new rule.B. Tsinghua University has made a new rule of graduation.C. Our experience of time can be possibly changed. By understandingthe psychological(心理学的) processes behind our different experiencesof time, we might be able to slow down time a little. One basic law of psychological time is that time seems to slow down whenwe’re exposed(接触) to new environments and experiences. The law iscaused by the relationship between our experience of time and the amountof information our minds process. The more information our minds take in,the slower time seems to pass.It follows, then, that we have different experiences of time in different situations. In some situations, our life is full of new experiences. Our minds process a lot of information and time seems to slow down. In other situations, we have fewer new experiences and the world around us becomes more and more familiar(熟悉的). We become insensitive to our experience, which means we process less information, and time seems to speed up. How can we slow down time? Here are two suggestions.Firstly, since we know that familiarity makes time pass faster, we can expose ourselves to as many new experiences as possible. We can give ourselves new challenges, meet new people, and expose our minds to new information, hobbies and skills. This will increase the amount of information our minds process and expand(增加) our experience of time. Secondly, and perhaps most effectively, we can give our whole attention to an experience-to what we are seeing, feeling, tasting, smelling or hearing. This means living through our senses rather than through our thoughts. For example, on the way home, focus your attention outside of yourself, instead of thinking about the problems you have to deal with. Look at the sky, or at the buildings you pass, traveling among them. This open attitude to your experiences helps take in more information and also has a time-expanding effect. To a certain degree, we can understand and control our experience of time passing. It’s possib le for us to slow down time by expanding our experience of time.27. According to the writer, we can expand our experience of time by .A. going to bed on timeB. traveling to new placesC. having dinner as usualD. printing the same materials28. What can we learn from the passage?A. Being familiar with the world around helps us get more information.B. Understanding psychological time makes life pass more quickly.C. We can take in more information by living through our senses.D. We should build a stronger relationship between time and us.29. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?A. Slow Down TimeB. Only Time Will TellC. Race Against TimeD. Time Will Not Comc Twice (四)Have you ever heard the phrase “You never get a second chance to make a first impression (印象)?” It may sound likean unusual piece of advice, but it is true --- the firstimpression someone has of you when meeting you for the firsttime will probably influence how that person treats you orreacts to you in the future. What is even more interesting is that the brain takes inall the information to create that first impression in aboutthree seconds. When you meet someone for the first time, bythe time you have stated you name or shaken hands, the otherperson has already formed an opinion about the kind of personyou are.So how do you make a good first impression? All thingsgrown-ups tell you --- such as being polite, and beingwell-dressed --- are very important. However, the most important tool for making a good first impression is yourface. Smiling, being responsive, and looking like you arehappy will almost always leave a positive ( 积极的) impression on people, especially those who do not know you. Most people, generally speaking, are ready to smile back whenthey are smiled at.Furthermore, smiling and being in a positive mood helpsyou to know and get a better understanding of new things. This means that you can possibly be friendlier to people youdo not know and be more creative and able to solve problemsmore quickly. As for me, the law of life is that success is a journey, nota destination(目的地). It means that the most important is not where you are in the end, but what you have finishedwhile you are trying along the way.One person who shares my law of life is Mark McGwire, a US baseball player. And, most of the time, he helped his teammates instead of improving personal performance, because he wanted to make it a good season for the whole team.It doesn't matter whether you have the ability to be on the top in the end or win the championship. All thatmatters is that you work hard the whole time. There are a few people in the world who have already understood thatsuccess is a journey, not a destination. She taught her people how to raise silkworms and later invented the loom(织机). Thus, an industry was born.Silk is mainly produced in the south of the Yangtze River Delta. Famous silk producing areas are Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Sichuan. Cities such as Suzhou, Hangzhou, Nanjing, and Shaoxing are well-known for their silk industries. It is a twinkling(闪烁) effect. Light is “not straight” when it travels through different parts of the earth's atmosphere. As the air in the earth's atmosphere is moving all the time, the light from the stars looks as ifit is moving too.The same thing also happens to things on the ground. On a very hot day, if you look at the road, the things inthe far places are not clear and move slowly. You can also see the same effect if you drop a rock into water. Therock appears a little unclear under the moving water.Scintillation causes a lot of problems for astronomers (天文学家) since they cannot see the stars clearly. Atelescope(望远镜) was sent into space so that the air movements in the atmosphere could be avoided. It took a longtime to build the space telescope but finally in 1990, a huge space telescope called the Hubble Space Telescope was successfully sent into space. Since then, astronomers have many important studies that have helped people understand space better.素材选自满分网1.
