V. Teaching Procedures
Step I Greetings (1 min)
Greet the whole class as usual. Step II Revision (4 mins)
1. Teacher lets students read the words on page 2, part 1
together. (anxious, break,captain, fever, injure, injury, pain,
painful, normal,sweets)
2. Teacher asks students to answer the questions.
(1) Which word is connected with food? (sweets)
(2) Which word is connected with body? (break, fever, injure,
injury, pain, painful)
(3) Which word means usual or ordinary? (normal)
(4) Which word means leader? (captain)
(5) Which word means worried about something that may happen?
(anxious)
Step III Lead-in (4 mins)
Teacher asks students some questions about health then leads in the story about Zhou Kai.
T: OK, here I have a question. What should we do to keep healthy?
S: We should have a balanced diet /have a healthy lifestyle / relax /
listen to music /read /take exercise . . .
T: Yeah, many methods we can choose. I think we should take more
exercise. Do you like taking exercise?
S: Yes / No
T: In fact, it is necessary for us to do some exercise. It can help us to
lose weight and improve our body, keep healthy. Besides it can
enrich our life in our spare time. So it can benefit us a lot.
However, there are some rules we should obey when we take
exercise. Such as don’t play football in the rain. OK, let’s begain
to see the story about Zhou Kai and find out his ways to keep
healthy.
Step IV Pre-reading (8 mins)
Deal with the questions in part 2 and part 4.
T: Scan the text and answer the questions in part 2 and part 4. Five
minutes later we will check the anwers.
Suggested Answers:
Part 2 :
1. Because he is going out to play football in the rain (without a
jacket ).

Step V While-reading (18 mins)
1. Deal with Zhou Kai (1). Read in roles by students. Then analyze
the text . In this procedure, students should sum up the main idea
by themselves first, then discuss with group members.

T: I will ask 2 students to read Zhou Kai (1) in different roles. One is
Zhou Kai and the other is mom. Other students should listen to
them carefully, meanwhile think about the main idea of this text.

T: Now you can discuss the main idea with each other. In two
minutes, we’ll check the answer.

discussion. Now who’d like to share his or her opinion about the

Suggested answer:
The conversation between Zhou Kai and his mother before he came out.
2. Deal with Zhou Kai (2). Read it again by themselves. Then analyze
the text
paragraph after paragraph in the same way. Find out the topic
sentence of each paragraph first, and then sum up the main idea
of each paragraph in their own words. Finally, find out the
more details about Zhou Kai and his family. In this procedure,
they should do everything by themselves first, then they can
discuss with their partners. At last check the answers. Suggested answers:
Paragraph 1: Zhou Kai’s family’s diet--------eat fruit, vegetables, fish.
don’t eat sugar. condition-----rarely get colds, had a bad cold, broke an arm.
Paragraph 3: Zhou Kai’s hobby----------------crazy about football.
T: From the main idea of each paragraph. How can we describe Zhou Kai in our own words? First, I’ll divide you into several groups
then you can discuss in groups. After a few minutes, I’ll ask the
representative of each group to share his or her group’s idea with
us. Now you can discuss.

Suggested answer:
Zhou Kai is a high school student. He is crazy about footbal and captain of the class team at school and he is also a member of the
senior high team. Two years ago, he broke his arm playing
football. The injury was quite painful and he couldn’t move his
arm for a month. Unluckily, last week he had a bad cold and a
fever. Because he didn’t listen to his mother’s advice so that he
played football without a jacket in the rain. In fact he rarely gets
colds, because of his family’s balanced diet. They eat fresh fruit
and vegetables. They have fish four times a week. They don’t eat
much fat or sugar. In all, they eat very healthily.
Step VI: Post-reading (8 mins)
Explain the text and deal with some difficult words, phrases and
sentences.
T: We have learned some information about Zhou Kai and his
family. This time we will deal with the language points.
Important words and phrases
1. When Zhou Kai’s mother saw him heading towards the front
door without a
jacket on, she eyed him anxiously. (head=walk, eyed=saw:
Nouns used as Verbs)
eg. Can you hand me the book? (hand: Verb, to pass)
2. You will catch a bad cold. (Catch/have/get a bad cold, have
a fever)
3. You can at least go and get your jacket. (at most, put on)
4. I broke my arm playing football. (break an arm, break a leg)
5. I’m a normal kind of person. (abnormal)
6. I make sure that I have a good diet. (have a balanced diet)
Difficult sentences
1. A lot of my school friends eat sweets every day but I’m
lucky because I don’t have a sweet tooth. (I don’t like
eating sweets.)
2. But there’s one thing I really love—I’m crazy about
football. (I like playing football very much.
Step VII Summary (1 min)
T: OK, let’s review what we have learned this class. First, we have talked about how to keep healthy. Second, we have learned the main
idea of Zhou Kai (1) and Zhou Kai (2). Then we have learned the
details about the text, and information about Zhou Kai and his
family. I believe that you have a better understanding of this text
now. Finally, I hope that after studying this text. We can learn to
keep our body healthy and enjoy more exercise.
Step VIII Homework (1 min)
1. Finish the exercise on page 3, part 5.
2. Think about the differences between “ be going to ” and “ will ”.
