centuries. Before 1765,there were no restaurants. That is,there were no places that provided the restaurant experience. There was nowhere in which a waiter brought you food and drink that you picked from a menu.In fact, there were no menus anywhere. There were eating places travellers could go to centuries before that. The countryside was full of inns that would serve food. And there were taverns where one could get drinks. The rich could also eat special meals prepared by private cooks. But none of them could be called a "restaurant".A man called Boulanger changed that.In 1765,he opened a place in Paris that sold soups(汤).On his sign he used the word "restaurant" to describe what he was selling. At that time, soups were considered something that could help "restore"(恢复)your health﹣in French the word "restore" is "restaurer"﹣﹣﹣so he called the soups "restaurants".Soon, people started buying Boulanger's soups even when they were not ill.And over time, people began to use the word "restaurant" to refer to a place selling soup rather than the soup itself.More "restaurants" opened in France, and people began to buy soups more often.Later, restaurants in Paris began to serve other food besides soup.In the 1790s,menus started to appear.By the mid﹣1800s,there were many types of restaurants throughout the world. The United States offered coffee shops.Tea houses became popular throughout China.Paris created beautiful restaurants for the rich. The British began to copy the French, and the restaurant idea spread throughout the British Empire.Today cities are filled with all types of 22,000pieces of space junk floating around the earth. And these are just the things that we can see from the surface of the earth by telescopes (望远镜).There are also millions of smaller pieces of junk that we can't see.Objects, like bits of old space rockets or satellites, move around the planet at very high speeds fast that even a very small piece can break important satellites or become dangerous new space tools can only stay in space for 25years at most. Each tool must be built to fall safely into the earth's atmosphere after that time.In the upper parts of the atmosphere,it will burn up.Many earth's atmosphere to burn up.The Germans are building robots that can collect pieces of space junk and bring them back to Earth to be safely destroyed. The problem is becoming more challenging because Some of them are thought to be bad habits. People spend countless hours each year trying to get rid of these bad habits but often fail. Why? Change demands hard work and there is no shortcut to achieve it. However, there is still some advice for you to follow.First, figure out why you do it. In other words, what's the result of doing this thing? If your bad habit is shouting at people when you are unhappy or under pressure, what do you get from it? It may make you feel a little better for a moment. Or maybe you have a bad habit of leaving your homework undone. The result could be that you get more time to spend on the Internet!Next, take a look at them on the other hand. What do you lose because of your bad habits? Shouting at other people is a bad habit because it makes people around you feel bad andunhappy. Leaving your homework undone is a bad habit because you may be punished by your teacher. Having more Internet time means that you lose the chance to learn things that you need to learn. When you think in this way, you'll find that it's not wise to keep your bad habit! Now it is time to make a decision. What will you choose? I'm sure you will choose to do what you think is more important.(1)From Paragraph 1, we know that ______.A a habit is a terrible thing that we can never changeB it takes people countless hours to get rid of their bad habits successfulC none of the people who try to break bad habits are successfulD though it is difficult, we can still do something about our bad habits(2)The underlined part "there is no shortcut to achieve it" means that "______".A it is not easy to get rid of bad habitsB there is a long way and a shortway C something dangerous may happen D we must cut it in a short time(3)According to the passage, if you want to get rid of your bad habits, you have to ______.A talk to others when you are in low spiritsB know why you do itC finish your homework firstD spend less time on the Internet(4)What does the underlined word "it" refer to in Paragraph 3?A Getting rid of the bad habits.B Forming good habits.C Spending countless hours.D Shouting at other people.(5)The main purpose of this passage is to ______.A introduce and describeB complain and disagreeC explain andadvise D discuss and argue4.The distance between ancient Rome and ancient China was about 4, 000 miles by land. There were terrible deserts and high mountains on the way. It was a very dangerous trip. The Silk Road was a nickname (别称) for any route that any trader took from China to Rome. For a very long time, the ancient Romans did not know who was making this wonderful cloth called silk. The Romans first discovered pieces of silk in the goods they took from some of the people they conquered (征服) . But those people did not know where the silk was made. They had traded for the silk. The Romans tried to find the traders as they came into villages to trade silk for other goods. But the traders did not know who made the silk either. In fact, the trading along the Silk Road was a relay (接力) system. One trader would travel for a while, stop and trade, and return home. The next trader would continue, stop and trade, and return home. And so it went. No trader made the whole trip because the trip was too dangerous. The desert had little or no water, and the mountains were dangerous and sand storms would blow up out of nowhere. Even the snakes were scary. The Romans were upset. The demand (需求) for silk in Rome had grown. Rome had gold and silver and treasure. They hoped to find "The Silk People" , as the Romans called these unknown people and trade with them. But they couldn't find them. The Romans sent out their men to follow the "Silk Road" and find the "Silk People". But most never returned because those who did said they could not make it through the desert. They had to turn around and come back. This went on for a very long time.As the years went by, along the Silk Road, temples appeared. There were even cities built on the oasis (绿洲) . It was never easy to travel by land from China to Rome. But it was worth it. Rome traded gold and treasure for China's silk and spices (香料) . But more things travelled along the Silk Road than traders and goods. Ideas travelled along the Silk Road as well. The ideas changed the world.(1)According to the passage, ______.A ancient Rome was about three thousand miles away from ancient ChinaB there were terrible deserts and high mountains between Rome and ChinaC ancient Romans traded directly with traders from ancient ChinaD ancient Romans wanted to conquer ancient China(2)The underlined part "it was worth it" probably means "______".A the thing was worth doingB the goods was expensiveC the Silk Road was valuableD the silk was worth buying(3)From the passage, we know ______.A ancient Rome was very poorB ancient Silk Road was very safeC ancient China's silk was very popularD ancient China was full of ancient Romans(4)Which is the correct order according to the passage?a. Chinese characters usually have more than one meaning and some of them are particularly loved by Chinese people. Here are the top six lucky ones. "pinyin" "fu" is only the phonic (语音的) part of the character and if you want to know the meaning of good luck "fu", you must read the Chinese character 福 because "fu" also represents (代表) other Chinese characters that sound the same.1. 福 "fu" means blessing, good fortune, good luck. Chinese character 福 "fu" is one of the most popular ones used during Chinese New Year. It is often displayed upside down on the front door of a house or an apartment. The upside down 福 "fu" means good luck comes since the character for upside down in Chinese sounds the same as the character for "come".2. 禄 "lu" means prosperity. It is used to mean official's salary (薪水) in feudal (封建的) China.3. 寿 "shou" means longevity.Chinese character 寿 "shou" also means life, age or birthday.4. 喜 "xi" is happiness. The doubled character 喜 "xi" means double happiness. Smoke from a fire can make it hard to see where things are, so it's important to learn and remember the different ways out of your home.Safety StepsIf you're in a room with the door closed when the fire breaks out, you need to take a few extra steps: If you see smoke coming under the door, don't open the door! If you don't see smoke, touch the door. If the door is hot or very warm, don't open the door!

I waited anxiously, knowing that once I received it I would know how good a writer I really was. When the paper arrived at my classroom, I nearly knocked down five of my classmates to get to the first paper. With a school paper in my hands, I returned to my seat. About a month earlier, I had handed in one of what I believed to be my best stories. I named it The Symbol of Success. The head of the English Department at my school, Professor Cullen, had said that she would include some reviews of students' stories in the latest school paper. Professor Cullen was known for her rough criticism. Impressing her was very hard, but I wanted to be the first to do so.I sat at the edge of my seat as I read through the other story reviews. There wasn't one story that got more than three stars. I became calm and wasn't anxious to know my review. It was long after that when I heard someone shout out "Five stars? Seriously?" behind me. I turned around and saw the shocked expression on Gene's face, "Peter, your story gets five stars!" I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I turned my attention back to my story and saw the five stars at the end of the review that I had not read yet. I looked through the review written by Professor Cullen. She wrote that I had a gift for story writing.I was proud that I achieved what I thought was impossible. For so long I believed I wasn't so good as I thought I was and that my talent was not enough to cover up my lack of writing skills. But this review proved that I was truly a good writer and that there was a great future ahead of me in the field of fiction writing. The review and the five stars meant the world of me. Those five stars became the symbol of my success.(1)How did the writer get the school paper?A His teacher gave it to him first.B The publisher sent it to him first.C His friend hel ped him get the first one.D He rushed ahead to get the first one.(2)What can we learn about Professor Cullen?A She was very gentle to everyone.B She seldom praised her students.C She was ve ry cold to her students.D She was respected by her students.(3)We can learn from this text that Peter ______.A had thought his story was better than those of others'B was always anxious to know his reviewC didn't know he got five stars until Genetold him. know that rubbish is a big problem on planet Earth. What many people don't know is that junk(垃圾)has become a problem in outer space too.According to BBC News, there are more than 22,000pieces of space suggesting different ways to clean up space junk.In England scientists are testing a metal net that can be fired into space junk. The net catches the junk and then pulls it into the earth's atmosphere to burn up.The Germans are building robots that can collect pieces of space junk and bring them back to Earth to be safely destroyed. The problem is becoming more challenging because we're sending more Coral is used in medical research to find out how to treat diseases like cancer, etc. Besides, the reefs attract tourists, the fishing industry and other businesses; bringing in billions of dollars of income.Coral is a kind of animal that has no backbone, and lives mostly in tropical(热带的)water. A rise of just 1℃ to 2℃can have effects on coral. It can survive in these higher temperatures only for a few months. Unluckily, the problem isn’t just global warming. The reefs have also been affected by po llution, coastal development and overfishing. Now scientists are doing something to make sure the rest survive. They hope that it’s not too late to save the reefs, and some are moving ahead on experiments to complete that goal. The moving stories behind the Chinese miracles(奇迹)show the people's efforts and spirit." One of the most touching moments in the film is probably about an interview of Nan Rendong, often called "Father of FAST". Sadly, after more than 20 years of working at the site, the chief scientist and engineer of the project passed away last year. Of course, the film also tells us many other heroes like him supporting the country's progress in science. Amazing China also focuses on common people. And, you also see a successful businessman from the coastal Fujian Province, who lives in the Gobi Desert, in northwest China, and has taken up a new career growing grapes. Here are several traditional Chinese foods:Eggs hold a special meaning in many cultures, and China is no exception(例外). The Chinese believe eggs mean producing something new. After a baby is born, parents may hold a "red egg and ginger party," where they pass out eggs to announce the birth. In some areas of China the number of eggs represents the sex of the child, for example, an even number(2, 4, 6…)for a girl, and an odd number(1, 3, 5…)if a boy has been born.Noodles are a symbol of long life in Chinese culture. They are as much a part of a Chinese birthday celebration as a birthday cake with lit candles is in many countries. Since noodles represent long life, it is considered very unlucky to cut it off.Although westerners sometimes may be very sorry to see fish lying on a plate, in China a whole fish is a symbol of richness. In fact, at a party it is traditional to serve the whole fish last, pointed toward the valued guest. Fish also has a special meaning because the Chinese word for fish, yu, sounds like the word for richness or plenty, and it is believed that eating fish will help your wishes come true in the year to come.A very popular dish during the Dragon Boat Festival is zongzi. This tasty dish is made of rice dumplings with meat, peanut or other delicious food in bamboo leaves.
