Lesson 37
Haiti is one of the most densely populated nations in the Western Hemisphere and it is also the least-developed countries. 4/5 of its people are illiterate. In 1804, Haiti gained independence and became the first blacks’ republic. As it has a long history of dictatorial rule, its people’s life is miserable. Most of its people are farmers and they could not earn that much to support their family. Because of widespread malnutrition and poor medical conditions, its average life expectancy is only 50 years.
Devastation extends from the slums to the presidential palace. Aid groups fear a catastrophic death toll1.

The passages will be read twice but the questions will be spoken only once. When you hear a question, read the four possible answers on your paper and decide which one would be the best answer to the question you have heard.Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage. All people enjoy delicious food. But in a modern society, people are more interested in its quality and varieties. Many people like vegetables most because they are rich in nutrients, without which humans can’t live. What they need, however, is fresh, unpolluted vegetables in all seasons and plenty of varieties. To satisfy their needs, many vegetable farms have sprung up.Suppose we are visiting one of the greenhouses near a big city.It is winter now. Outside the greenhouse, the temperature is below zero, but inside it, you can smell the fragrance of various vegetables.Computers play an important role in this greenhouse. These lettuces are grown in water instead of soil. The computer tests the amounts of nutrients in water regularly. It adjusts the nutrients to their best levels to allow lettuces to grow healthily. In recent years, astronauts have taken with them some plant seeds to space. When the seeds return to earth, they are not the same ones as before. They have become space seeds because the special conditions of space have changed them. The gourds grown from space seeds have different shapes: some are long and some round, and they are larger than native ones. The space eggplants have the size of a football, much larger than ordinary eggplants. The space grapes are larger and taste sweeter than ordinary ones.11. Why have many vegetable farms sprung up?12. Where are the lettuces grown in the greenhouse?13. How are the gourds grown from space seeds different from those grown from ordinary seeds?Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage. Here is the news for this week.Washington --- A U.S. congresswoman is in critical condition and six people are dead after a gunman opened fire in an Arizona parking lot. The dead include a federal judge. More than a dozen people are wounded. President Barack Obama called the attack at a public meeting a "tragedy for our entire country".London --- A strong earthquake measuring 7.1 has shaken central Chile, cutting off power and communications but causing no death or serious injuries. Hundreds of people in coastal areas fled to higher ground for fear of a tsunami, but no alert was issued.Beijing --- The Spring Festival is the biggest holiday in China. It used to be a time when people would travel throughout the country, but now more Chinese would like to spend the holiday in other countries. Therefore, winning Chinese tourists becomes an important business strategy. South Korea is planning to enlarge existing hotels and develop more travel packages, especially marketed towards Chinese tourists. Another major neighbour, Japan will offer visas to individual Chinese tourists, allowing them to travel to the country multiple times.14. How many people are wounded in the gun attack in U.S.?15. What was the consequence of the earthquake that happened in Chile?16. Which of the business strategies is NOT mentioned in the third news?Part C Longer ConversationsDirections: In Part C, you will hear two longer conversations. The conversations will be read twice. After you hear each conversation, you are required to fill in the numbered blanks with the information you hear. Write your answers on your answer sheet.Blanks 17 through 20 are based on the following conversation.M: Mrs. Whinfield, thank you very much for allowing me to visit your wonderful garden. It really helps me a lot write an article on Dorset Gardens for our paper. Now, I wonder if I could ask you a few questions.W: Yes, sure.M: Could you tell me when you became interested in gardening.W: Well, I was always interested in wild flowers. And then in 1980 I read Margery Fisher’s book College Garden Flowers, which was full of practical advice and personal opinions. I also used to visit Kew Gardens a lot. That was when we lived in Haro, West London. I learned a lot from my visits. By the way, Dorset is one of England’s two most beautiful towns, the other one being Somerset. You must know that. I’m often invited to give talks to biology students in colleges.M: Yes, certainly. That’s why I came here. Mm, now, what was your first garden like? W: It was a tiny piece of land which came with my house in Haro in West London. M: Do you grow many plants yourself?W: I don’t grow many plants from seeds, but I have several friends, and we often give each other plants. My garden is a place which often reminds me of so many people through the plants they’ve given me.Complete the form. Write ONE WORD for each answer.Blanks 21 through 24 are based on the following conversation.W: Good afternoon, sir. Can I help you?M: Good afternoon. I have a reservation for a single room with a bath here.W: May I have your name, please?M: Black, John Black.W: Just a moment, sir. I will look through our list. 专项提升:Module1阅读专练Section AOne day, at my grandmother’s house, my cousin, Ivy, joined us for dinner. We had a delicious dinner. Then, the women and girls sat around talking about dieting and their weight. My aunt complimented Ivy who weighed 120 pounds on her skinny* look. My aunt said that she needed to go on a diet because she weighed almost 140 pounds. This comment hurt me because I weighed almost 160 pounds. So I said, "I probably need to go on a diet, too." But I said this softly, so, hopefully, th ey wouldn’t hear me.Ivy, however, was sitting right next to me and heard what I said. She took me into the other room. "When I was in my last year of high school, I weighed 140 pounds," she said. "I was so worried. I couldn’t imagine whether there wa s any guy would want to be with me because I was fat. I tried eating less, dieting and doing exercise, but nothing seemed to work. That was when I realized that nobody is perfect. No skinny girl will ever be skinny enough for people to say that her figure is 'perfect’, because then she would be considered unhealthy."I thought her words over the next few days and decided that I wouldn’t let my weight rule my life. I wouldn’t let it decide what I should and should not eat. I believe that nobody is perfect. So, whenever I start to worry about my weight, I say to myself, "Do I have to go on a diet? I think not."Note:* skinny adj.极瘦的;皮包骨的Read the passage and choose the best answer to each question.1. The best title for the passage could probably be______.A. Nobody Is PerfectB. Losing Weight Is No UseC. Weight Rules One’s LifeD. No Girl Is Skinny Enough2. According to Paragraph 1, the author hoped that nobody would hear her, because______.A. she was skinnyB. she didn’t like any of themC. she was fatter than the othersD. everyone was too busy to hear her3. According to the passage, what do we know about Ivy?A. She is fat.B. She is positive.C. She is always skinny.D. She is worried about her figure.4. Paragraph 2 is mainly about______.A. how Ivy lost weightB. an introduction to IvyC. why the author should go on a dietD. what Ivy told the author about weightSection BMany people have weight problems, but not because they don’t know how to eat or prepare healthy food. Some people think that because some food is healthy, it won’t taste good. To avoid this misunderstanding is the first step to learn to eat and prepare healthy food.Instead of buying canned1fruit and vegetables, choose fresh ones that don’t have added sugar or salt. If you must buy canned fruit, choose those that are packed in natural fruit juice. Canned vegetables may also have extra salt that is not necessary for the taste.Instead of cooking vegetables in oil, steam them and add spices or lemon juice for taste. With so many different spices available at the market, there is no need to use extra butter or salt. You can even mix some of your spices to create a unique taste of your own.Instead of having high-fat red meat, try to have poultry2 and fish. In addition, do not fry your meat, but bake it. Avoid cooking in vegetable oil and choose olive oil instead for a healthier choice. One of the biggest reasons for failing to lose weight is taking too many carbohydrates (碳水化合物). All carbohydrates turn to sugar, so it’s important to learn to eat healthier food that is made of whole grains, such as wheat bread and wheat flour. The whole grains do not turn to sugar when they are eaten yet provide us with the energy that we need to carry out our daily activities.Notes:1. canned adj.罐装的;听装的2. poultry n.禽的肉Read the passage and choose the best answer to each question.1. The passage is mainly to ______.A. list items for a healthy dietB. tell people how to eat healthilyC. tell people how to lose weightD. talk about a new kind of healthy food2. The last paragraph is mainly about _______.A. how carbohydrates turn to sugarB. why some people fail to lose weightC. choosing whole grains to get less sugarD. getting the energy we need for daily activities3. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?A. Olive oil is healthier than vegetable oil.B. Poultry and fish have less fat than red meat.C. Fruit packed in natural fruit juice is better than fresh fruit.D. Vegetables cooked in oil are less healthier than those steamed.读写任务请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。

Large-scale US wind power would cause a warming effect that would takeroughlya century tooffset, "claimsthe headline on a press release issued alongside the study, implying thatthe savings in greenhouse gas emission wouldn’tcounteractthe warming for 100 years. Other climate scientists say this particular claim is misleading.
Then there's the comparison with global (风力满轮机) simplyredistributeheat that is already warming. Thecrucialpoint here is that wind turbines in the air. At night, for instance, the ground cools and so does the layer of air just above it.The turning of turbine blades heats the surface by bringing down warmer air from above-- the overall heat content of the atmosphere does not change and the effect ceases when the turbines stop turning.
To put this another way, even if this study was right about themagnitudeof the effect, and every inch of land in the world was covered with wind turbines, it wouldn't cause any melting of the polar ice caps.
