Researchers have found that inadequate sleep and tiredness increase a person’s risk of developing severe medical conditions, such as obesity, high bloodsugar levels, and heart disease. Now, a new study has found that getting enough sleep is also the key to improving academic performance.Jeffrey Gross, the university science professor who led the research, was nottrying to find the relationship between sleep and grades when he handed out smart watches to the 100 students in his chemistry class. Instead, the professor hoped the wrist-worn devices, which track a person’s physical activity, would show aconnection between exercise and the academic achievement. While Gross’s data showed no relationship between these two factors, the study found something surprising. As the researchers were analysing their data, theynoticed that there was a straight-line relationship between the average amount ofsleep students got and their results in the course’s 11 quizzes, three midterm tests, and the final exam.Even more interesting, it was not enough for students to just head to bed earlythe night before a test. Instead, it was the sleep you got during the days when learning was happening that mattered most. The time students went to bed each night was similarly important. Those who wentto bed in early hours of the morning performed poorly, even if the total sleep time was the same as a higher-performing student.“When you go to bed matters,” Gross says, “If you go tobed at 10, or 12, or 1 at night, and sleep for seven hours, your performance isthe same. But if you go to bed after 2, your performance starts to go down even ifyou get the same seven hours. So, quantity isn’t everything.”Perhaps the most interesting was the huge effect that small differences in sleep patterns had on students’ grades. The entire course grades for students averagingsix and a half hours of sleep each night were 25% lower than students who averagedjust one hour more sleep. Similarly, students who changed their bedtime by even one hour each night had grades that dropped 45% below those with more regular bedtime. 4.Based on his original goals, which word best describes Professor Gross’s research findings?plete.B.Accidental.C.Convincing.D.Doubtful.5.Who were the people taking part in the study?A.University student athletes.B.Professor Gross’s own students.C.Middle school chemistry students.D.Volunteers from different universities.6.How did Professor Gross’s team measure academic performance?A.Making the students wear a special watch.B.Giving the students regular after-class quizzes.ing students’ university entrance test results.ing the students’ normal test and quiz grades.7.Based on the study’s findings, who is likely to perform best academically?A.A person who sleeps for a total of 7 hours each night.B.A person who sleeps from 11 p.m.to 6 a.m.each day.C.A person whose normal bedtime changes between 9 p.m.and 12 p.m.D.A person who has a good night’s sleep the night before an important test.C(2024·安徽安庆高三二模)Mental health and happiness are important to student success in higher education but rarely get the attention they need. Colleges and universities in the UnitedStates have been seeing increases in mental illness among students for decades. Promoting student mental health and emotional happiness on campus requires more than a well-functioning counselling centre. It calls for a campus-wide commitment action plan.American undergraduate students have been reporting increasing rates of anxiety and depression for decades. In the 2024-2025 Healthy Minds Study(HMS) survey, 40% of about 300,000 students at some 300 colleges and universities reported experiencing a mental health problem, and 60% said they were having difficulty accessing mental health care on campus or in the community. Other studies estimate that the dropout rate for US undergraduate students with mental health problems is over 40%, and that the popularity of mental health problems among graduate students is six times that of the general population. Most academic institutions provide some mental health services, often through a counselling centre. But no matter how good that centre is, it alone cannot solve the problems. An important early step is for each institution to assess the extent of the crisis on its campus and whether there are enough treatment services either at the institution or in the local community. Another important question is whether there are elements of the institution’s own environment or culture that contribute to the problems that students are experiencing, like unreasonable workloads or deadlines for assignments.Every college and university should carry out a comprehensive action plan to achieve this goal. This may require additional resources during a trying time for institutional budgets. But supporting all students is so important that financial priorities should be rearranged.8.What happens to undergraduate students in America?A.They pay little attention to higher education.B.Increasing students suffer from mental illness.C.They are lacking in a sense of happiness.D.They lose confidence in the future careers.9.What are the statistics in paragraph 2 about?A.Terrible dropout rates.B.Decreasing general population.C.Emotional happiness.D.Mentally healthy problems.10.What is the key solution to fixing the problems?A.Analysing the present situation.B.Opening more counselling centres.C.Offering free mental health services.D.Reducing unreasonable workloads.11.How can we put a comprehensive action plan into practice?A.By giving some useful advice.B.By offering financial support.C.By turning to the government.D.By getting enough trying time.D(2024·山东日照一模)Singapore researchers say they have developed a form of electronic skin that can create a sense of touch. They hope their invention will give people withprosthetic(假体的) hands the ability to identify different objects. The skin device measures 1 square centimetre. The system contains 100 small sensors that attempt to recreate things like textures(质地), temperature and evenpain. The researchers call the device Asynchronous Coded Electronic Skin(ACES), which can process information faster than the human’s nervous system, and is able to recognise 20 to 30 different textures. It can even correctly read Braille(布拉耶盲文) letters most of the time. The system does not require the users’ movement to work. They just need to slide to feel textures. But in this case the skin, with just a single touch, is able to detect textures of different roughness.A demonstration showed that the device could identify the difference between asoft ball and a solid plastic one.“When you lose your sense of touch, youessentially become numb and prosthetic users face that problem,” said Benjamin Tee, leader of the research team.“So by recreating an artificial version of the skin for their prosthetic devices, they can hold a hand and feel the warmth and feel that itis soft.”Tee said his idea for the device came from a movie where a character loses hisright hand and it is replaced with a robotic one. In the movie, the new hand is ableto experience the touch sense just like the real one.The artificial skin technology is still going through experiments and development. But Tee said there had already been a lot of interest in the system, especially from the medical community. Tee said similar inventions that his team had developedincluded see-through skin that could repair itself when torn and a material for wearable electronic devices that gave off light.12.What can we learn about the artificial skin in paragraph 2?A.It is sensitive to high temperature.B.It reacts faster than our nervous system.C.It can recognise different objects.D.It helps the users memorise Braille letters.13.What can be inferred from Benjamin Tee’s words?A.The artificial skin feels like a real thing.B.People with the artificial skin feel warm.C.People don’t want to lose the sense of touch.D.He is sympathetic towards the prosthetic users.14.What inspired Benjamin Tee to create the artificial skin?A.The desire to help those in need.B.The life of the disabled.C.A dream of earning more money.D.A scene from a movie.15.Which word can best describe the artificial skin technology?A.Profitable.B.Stable.C.Promising.D.Challenging.Ⅱ.七选五(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)(2024·山东济南高三适应性考试)HowtoReduceGiftWrapWasteWrapping paper may have “paper” in its name, but that doesn’t automatically mean it can be recycled.16 Try these suggestions for cutting down the amount of wrapping paper you throw away.Reusewhatyouhave.17 It’s estimated that the US produces 4.6 million pounds of wrapping paper annually, and 2.3 million pounds of that stays in people’s homes, awaiting reuse.Usedifferentmaterials.18 Select basic brown thick paper that can be made up with a bow, ribbons, leaves, pine cones or markers. (英语)高三英语阅读理解(教育文化)技巧阅读训练策略及练习题(含答案)一、高中英语阅读理解教育文化类1.阅读理解By now you've probably heard about the "you're not special" speech, when English teacher David McCullough told graduating seniors at Wellesley High School: "Do not get the idea you're anything special, because you're not." Mothers and fathers present at the ceremony 一and a whole lot of other parents across the Internet — took issue with McCullough's ego-puncturing (伤自尊的) words. But lost in the uproar (喧嚣)was something we really should be taking to heart: our young people actually have no idea whether they're particularly talented or accomplished or not. In our eagerness to elevate their self-esteem, we forgot to teach them how to realistically assess their own abilities, a crucial requirement for getting better at anything from math to music to sports. In fact, it's not just privileged high-school students: we all tend to view ourselves as above average.Such inflated self-judgments have been found in study after study and it's often exactly when we're least competent at a given task that we rate our performance most generously, in a 2006 study published in the journal Medical Education, for example, medical students who scored the lowest on an essay test were the most charitable in their self evaluations, while high-scoring students judged themselves much more strictly. Poor students, the authors note, "lack insight" into their own inadequacy. Why should this be? Another study, led by Cornell University psychologist David Dunning, offers an enlightening explanation. People who are incompetent, he writes with coauthor Justin Kruger, suffer from a “dual burden": they're not good at what they do, and their very clumsiness prevents them from recognizing how bad they are.In Dunning and Kruger's study, subjects scoring at the bottom on tests of logic, grammar and humor -extremely overestimated'' their talents. Although their test scores put them in the 12th percentile (百分位数) they guessed they were in the 62nd. What these individuals lacked (in addition 9 clear logic, proper grammar and a sense of humor) was "meta cognitive skill" the capacity to monitor how well they're performing. In the absence of that capacity, the subjects arrived at an overly hopeful view of their own abilities. There's a paradox here, the authors note: The skills that lead to competence in a particular domain are often the very same skills necessary to evaluate competence in that field? In other words, to get better at judging how well we're doing at an activity, we have to get better at the activity itself. There are a couple of ways out of this double bind. First, we can learn to make honest comparisons with others. Train yourself to recognize excellence, even when you yourself don't possess it, and compare what you can do against what truly excellent individuals are able to accomplish. Second, seek out feedback that is frequent, accurate and specific. Find a critic who will tell you not only how poorly you're doing, but just what it is that you're doing wrong. As Dunning and Kruger note, success indicates to us that everything went right, but failure is more ambiguous: any number of things could have gone wrong. Use this external feedback to figure out exactly where and when you screwed up.If we adopt these strategies — and most importantly, teach them to our children — they won't need parents, or a commencement (毕业典礼)speaker, to tell them that they're special. They'llalready know that they are, or have a plan to get that way.(1)The author thinks the real problem is that .A.no requirement is set up for young people to get betterB.we always tend to consider ourselves to be privilegedC.we don't know whether our young people are talented or notD.young people don't know how to assess their abilities realistically(2)We can infer from the passage that those high-scoring studentsA.know how to cultivate clear logic and proper grammarB.tend to be very competent in their high-scoring fieldsC.don't view themselves as competent because they know their limitsD.don't know how well they perform due to their strict self-judgement(3)The strategies of becoming special suggest that .A.we need internal honesty with ourselves and external honesty from othersB.the best way to get better is to carefully study past success and failureC.through comparison with others, one will know where and when he failsD.neither parents nor a commencement speaker can tell whether one is special(4)Which can be the best title of this passage?A.Tip On Making Ourselves More SpecialB.Let's Admit That We Are Not That SpecialC.Special or Not? 高考新题型AMany language learners think that the best way to learn a language is to spend time in a country where the language is spoken. Nowadays, it has become easier to find both chances and means. Many schools offer exchange program at a reasonable cost. Some programmes offer a “homestay” service.A year in foreign country is not just about learning a language. It is true that exchange students usually become better in the new language, but most of them would probably tell you that they also learn many other things that are even more important. Being an exchange student helps you make friends with different people and understand another culture. Besides, it can help broaden your horizons (视野) and improve your understanding of the world. What is perhaps the most valuable is what you learn about yourself and your own culture. As an exchange student, you have to learn to depend on yourself and you will often be asked to explain your country and culture to others. It may seem strange, but many returning exchange students say that their year abroad made them understand their own country and culture for the first time.Studying abroad may also have its disadvantages. While exchange students can learn many useful things, it is also possible that some of them may fall behind in their studies. Since exchange students always experience language and culture problems in the beginning, they will not be able to take classes at the same level as at home. Many parents worry about the safety of their children and the cost.阅读短文,完成表格。

They Just Can't Help ItMy theory is that the female brain is mainly built for empathy —the ability to understand other people —and that the male brain is mainly built for building systems. ________ For example, women are more likely to read magazines on fashion and parenting, while men will choose magazines that feature computers and sport. You may think that these preferences are influenced by the way people are taught to behave when they are growing up. However, this is not the case. A new study carried out at Cambridge University shows that newborn girls look longer at a face, and newborn boys look longer at a mobile. ________ It has also been observed that girls are better at noticing signs of changes in other people's feelings. Boys, however, seem to enjoy building toy towers and playing with toys which have clear functions. ________ People whose jobs are in the construction industries are almost male. Math and engineering, which require high levels of systems-thinking, are also male-chosen disciplines. Why do men and women have the difference? Actually women have four times as many brain neurons (神经) that connect the right and left part of their brains. Because of it, women have a better ability to multitask than men. ________ Men tend to focus on a limited number of problems at a time. They will separate themselves from problems and view tasks as independent from one another. Some people may worry that I am suggesting one gender (性别) is better than the other, but this is not the case. My theory says that males and females differ in the kinds of things that they find easy, but that both genders have their strengths and weaknesses. ________ It is not true. The study simply looks at males and females as two groups, and asks what differences exist, and why they are there.A. Generally speaking, there are clear differences.B. Their preference for building systems may change over time.C. You can see the same kind of pattern in the adult workplace.D. They will consider many sources of information at the same time.E. It is important to stress that the female brain may be built more for empathy.F. That suggests certain differences between male and female brains are biological.G. 专题限时训练(十六)[文化训练型阅读理解(一)](限时:25分钟)AA Practical English Grammar is intended for intermediate(中级的) and post-intermediate students. We hope that more advanced learners and teachers will also find it useful. The book is a comprehensive survey of structures and forms, written in clear modern English and illustrated with numerous examples. Areas of particular difficulty have been given special attention. Differences between conversational usage and strict grammatical forms are shown but the emphasis is on controversial forms. In the fourth edition, the main changes are as follows.1.Explanation and examples have been brought up to date.2.There is now more information on countable and uncountable nouns, attributive and predicative adjectives, adverbs of place, sentence adverbs, cleft sentences, prepositions, conjunctives, modal verbs, perfect tenses, infinitive constructions, the passive, purpose clauses.3.Some material has been rearranged to make comparisons easier. For example, parts of chapters on can, may, must, etc. are now grouped by functions; verbs of liking and preference have a chapter to themselves; suggestions and invitations have joined the chapter on commands, requests and advice.4.The content list now summaries every edition heading, and there is a new index containing many more entries references. In this edition, the sign “~” is frequently used to show a change of speaker in examples of dialogues. Note also says that although the sign “=”sometimes connects two words or expressions with the same meaning, it is often used more freely, e.g. to indicate a transformation from active to passive or direct to indirect speech. We wish to thank all at Oxford University Press who have assisted in the preparation of the fourth edition. We would also like to thank Professor Egawa of Nihon University, Japan, Professor Rene Dirven of Duisburg University, West Germany and other colleagues for their friendly and helpful suggestions.1. The grammar book mentioned in this passage is not suitable for ________.A.a middle school teacherB.a primary school studentC.a senior high studentD.a college student2. According to the passage, we know that this grammar book________.A.compares modern English with old EnglishB.gives a large number of examples to reduce difficultyC.attaches more importance to conversational formsD.pays little attention to strict grammatical forms3. Which of the following statements about the changes is TRUE?A.This book keeps up with the latest usages of the American English language.B.This edition offers more information about pronouns.C.It's not easy for us to find the information we need in this book.D.One particular chapter discusses verbs like “care, like, love, hate, prefer, wish”.4. When you see this line in the book, “Did you get a ticket? ~Yes, I managed to get one”,we can understand that ________.A.the two parts before and after the sign “~” mean the sameB.the two parts before and after “~” are said by two different peopleC.the second speaker repeats what the first speaker saysD.the topic is changed in the part after the sign “~”5. In the last paragraph, the authors thank several people because________.A.they have helped the authors with this editionB.they have agreed to buy a lot of books from the authorsC.the authors want to make use of the fame of those peopleD.those people will make advertisements for this bookBA fellow speaker from California named Geri flew to Japan, in her favourite jeans and a casual jacket, to give her first speech. Fourteen hours later, four perfectly dressed Japanese gentlemen greeted her at Narita Airport. Smiling and bowing low, they handed her their business cards. With her bag in one hand, Geri took their cards with the other. She thanked them, glanced briefly at the cards, and put them into her jeans pocket quickly. When the five of them arrived at the hotel, they invited Geri to tea in the lobby (大厅). While sipping tea, the gentlemen presented her with a small gift which she eagerly opened. She was thrilled with the gift and shouted excitedly, “Oh, it's beautiful!”At this point, the four Japanese gentlemen stood up and, bowing only very slightly, said “Sayonara” and left immediately. Poor Geri was left astonished. What did she do wrong?Everything! Her jeans were the first gaffe. Even if you're coming off a bicycle in Japan, you do not meet clients (客人) casually dressed. The second mistake was Geri's handling of their business cards rudely. In Japan, the business card is one of the most important communicative tools. It is always presented and accepted respectfully with both hands. However, Geri put their cards away much too quickly. In Japan, people use business cards as a conversation starter. You chat about each other's cards and work and do not put theirs away until they gently and respectfully place yours in safe keeping. Putting it carelessly into her jeans pocket was the ultimate disrespect. Then, the fourth horror of horrors was that Geri should not have opened the gift in front of her clients. In a land where saving face is critical, it would be embarrassing to discover the gift they gave was not as nice as the one they received. What is worse, Geri hadn't even given them a gift!1. In the four Japanese gentlemen's eyes, Geri took their cards ________.A.excitedlyB.embarrassinglyC.politelyD.disrespectfully2. Why did the four Japanese gentlemen leave Geri suddenly?A.Because they couldn't bear Geri's behaviour any longer.B.Because they had finished the task.C.Because Geri had something more important to do.D.Because Geri felt embarrassed.3. What does the underlined word “gaffe”in Paragraph 4 probably mean?A.Ignorance.B.Sadness.C.Mistake.D.Carelessness.4. The third mistake Geri made was that she ________.A.used her own card as a conversation starterB.took her clients' cards with one handC.kept her clients' cards in a wrong placeD.met her clients in jeans5. What lesson can we draw from this story?A.Honesty is the best policy.B.Think twice before you take any action.C.When in Rome, do as the Romans do.D.Don't claim to know what you don't know.CSome American parents might think their children need better education to compete with China and other countries. But how much do the parents themselves need to change?A new book called Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother by Amy Chua has caused a debate about cultural differences in parenting. Ms Chua is a professor at the Yale Law School in New Haven, Connecticut, and the mother of two daughters. She was raised in the American Mid-west by immigrant Chinese parents. In the Chinese culture, the tiger represents strength and power. In her book, Ms Chua writes about how she demanded excellence from her daughters. For example, she threatened to burn her daughter's stuffed animals unless they played a piece of music perfectly. She would insult her daughters if they failed to meet her expectations.Ms Chua told NBC television that she had a clear list of what her daughters, Sophia and Louisa, were not permitted to do, such as attending a sleepover, having a play date, watching TV or playing computer games and getting any grade less than an A.Many people have criticized Amy Chua. Some say her parenting methods were abusive(辱骂的). She even admits that her husband, who is not Chinese, sometimes objected to her parenting style. But she says that was the way her parents raised her and her three sisters.Ms Chua makes fun of her own extreme style of parenting. She says she eased some of the pressure after her younger daughter rebelled and shouted, “I hate my life! I hate you!”Ms Chua says she decided to retreat when it seemed like there was a risk that she might lose her daughter. But she also says American parents often have low expectations of their children's abilities.“One of the biggest differences I see between Western and Chinese parenting is that Chinese parents assume strength rather than fragility(脆弱).”Stacey DeBroff has written four books on parenting. “I think that the stirring of intense debate has to do with what it means to be a successful parent and what it means to be a successful child.”Ms DeBroff says Amy Chua's parenting style is not limited to Chinese families. She says it represents a traditional way of parenting among immigrants seeking a better future for their children. But she also sees a risk. When children have no time to be social or to follow their own interests, they might not develop other skills that they need to succeed in life. Stacey DeBroff advises parents to develop their own style of parenting and not just repeat the way they were raised.1. According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE about American parents?A.Some of them expect their children to be competitive.B.Some of them need to educate themselves better.C.They should learn from Chinese parents.D.They care their kids more than Chinese parents.2. What can we learn about Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother?A.It is a list of things for children to do.B.It is a book about cultural differences.C.It is a heated debate about parenting.D.It is a book about how to raise children.3. Based on the passage, Ms Chua's parenting is exposed to the following EXCEPT________.A.pressure B.managementC.recreation D.compromise4. What does the underlined word “retreat”in Paragraph 7 mean?A.Give in. B.Pass away.C.Cry out. D.Go ahead.5. According to Ms DeBroff, ________.A.Amy Chua's parenting style should be banned(禁止) in ChinaB.Amy Chua should stop to adopt American parenting stylesC.Amy Chua's parenting style should be adjusted if possibleD.There isn't any advantages in Amy Chua's parenting style专题限时训练(十六)A【要点综述】本文主要介绍了《有用英语语法》的特点及对它的第四版与之前版本主要不同的地方进行了介绍。

专题限时训练(十九) [文化教育型阅读理解(一)](限时:25分钟)(一)For thousands of years, the most important two buildings in any British village have been the church and the pub. Traditionally, the church and the pub are at the heart of any village or town, where the people gather together to socialize and exchange news.As a result, British pubs are often old and well preserved. Many of them have become historic sites. The most famous example is the pub in the city of Nottingham called “The Old Trip to Jerusalem”, which dates back to the year 1189 AD and is probably the oldest pub in England. However, British pubs are not just for kings and queens; they welcome people from all classes and parts of society. On a cold night, the pub's landlord or landlady can always find a warm place for you by the fire. There is always honest and hearty food and plenty of drink available at an affordable price. That's how things used to be. Things are beginning to change. It is said that the credit crunch(信贷紧缩) is causing British pubs to go out of business. People do not have enough spare money to spend on beer. Recently, the UK government banned smoking in all pubs, and that may also have affected the number of customers going to pubs. This decline is happening despite the fact that in 2005 the UK government started to allow pubs to stay open after 11 pm. Previously, with 11 pm as closing time, customers would have to drink quite quickly, meaning they sometimes got more drunk than they would if allowed to drink slowly. The British habit of drinking a lot very quickly is known as “binge drinking”,and it causes longterm health problems for people and problems with violent crime for communities. In order to save their businesses, pubs are trying to change with the market. British pub s now offer something for everyone. A lot of pubs used to be “working men's clubs”, meaning that women could not usually enter. Today, however, women can freely enter 99% of pubs without experiencing any problems. Perhaps things are changing for the better after all.1.The passage mainly tells us something about ________.A.the past and present of British pubsB.the decline of British pubsC.the long history of British pubsD.the importance of British pubs2.Which may not be the cause of the decline of British pubs?A.The credit crunch.B.The present closing time.C.The ban of smoking.D.Having no spare money.3.We can infer from the passage that ________.A.British people used to like drinking slowlyB.closing the pubs early will reduce social problemsC.“binge drinking” means drinking less beerD.British government aims to discourage people from “binge drinking”4.We can see from the last paragraph that the author ________.A.is against the admission of too many women to the pubsB.holds an optimistic attitude towards the British pubsC.thinks that women in the pubs will cause fewer social problemsD.thinks that British pubs should offer everything you need(二)In this age of Internet chat, videogames and reality television, there is no shortage of mindless activities to keep a child occupied. Yet, despite the competition, my 8yearold daughter Rebecca wants to spend her leisure time writing short stories. She wants to enter one of her stories into a writing contest, a competition she won last year.As a writer I know about winning contests, and about losing them. I know what it is like to work hard on a story only to receive a rejection slip from the publisher.I also know the pressures of trying to live up to a reputation created by previous victories. What if she doesn't win the contest again? That's the strange thing about being a parent. So many of our own past scars and dashed hopes can surface.A revelation (启示) came last week when I asked her, “Don't you want to win again?” “No,” she replied. “I just w ant to tell the story of an angel going to first grade.”I had just spent weeks correcting her stories as she spontaneously (自发地) told them. Telling myself that I was merely an experienced writer guiding the young writer across the hall, I offered suggestions for characters, conflicts and endings for her tales. The story about a fearful angel starting first grade was quickly “guided” by me into the tale of a little girl with a wild imagination taking her first music lesson. I had turned her contest into my contest without even realizing it.Staying back and giving kids space to grow is not as easy as it looks. Because I knew very little about farm animals who used tools or angels who went to first grade, I had to accept the fact that I was coopting my daugh ter's experience. While stepping back is difficult for me, it is certainly a good first step that I will quickly follow with more steps, putting myself far enough away to give her room but close enough to help if asked. All the while I will be reminding myself that children need room to experiment, grow and find their own voices.1.What did the author say about her own writing experience?A.She was constantly under pressure of writing more.B.Most of her stories had been rejected by publishers.C.Her way to success was full of pains and frustrations.D.She did not quite live up to her reputation as a writer.2.Why did Rebecca want to enter this year's writing contest?A.She wanted to share her stories with readers.B.She had won a prize in the previous contest.C.She was sure of winning with her mother's help.D.She believed she possessed real talent for writing.3.The author took great pains to refine her daughter's stories because ________.A.she wanted to help Rebecca realize her dream of becoming a writerB.she believed she had the knowledge and experience to offer guidanceC.she did not want to disappoint Rebecca who needed her help so muchD.she was afraid Rebecca's imagination might run wild while writing4.What's the author's advice for parents?A.Children should be given every chance to voice their opinions.B.Children should be allowed freedom to grow through experience.C.Parents should keep an eye on the activities their kids engage in.D.A writing career, though attractive, is not for every child to pursue.(三)A practical English Grammar is intended for intermediate(中级的) and postintermediate students. In the fourth edition, the main changes are as follows.1. Explanation and examples have been brought up to date.2. There is now more information on countable and uncountable nouns, attributive and predicative adjectives, adverbs of place, sentence adverbs, cleft sentences, prepositions, conjunctives, modal verbs, perfect tenses, infinitive constructions, the passive, purpose clauses.3. Some material has been rearranged to make comparisons easier. For example, parts of chapters on can, may, must, etc. are now grouped by functions; verbs of liking and preference have a chapter to themselves; suggestions and invitations have joined the chapter on commands, requests and advice.4. The content list now summaries every edition heading, and there is a new index containing many more references. In this edition the sign “~” is frequently used to show a change of speakers in examples of dialogues. Although the sign “=” sometimes connects two words or expressions with the same meaning, it is often used more freely, e.g. to indicate a transformation from active to passive or direct to indirect speech. We wish to thank all at Oxford University Press who have assisted in the preparation of the fourth edition. Television, radio, and magazines invade(侵扰) the lives of spectators with a variety of shows, information, and publications about stars and their lives. For instance, Britney Spears has become the target of paparazzi(狗仔队). In May, Britney appeared at the front page of the most popular magazines revealing that she married her best friend in Vegas, Nevada. Haven’t you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language?According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles. The study also found the effect is greater on the younger people who learn a second language.A team led by Dr. Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of Britons(土著的英国人) who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of “early bilinguals” who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners.Scans showed that grey matter density(密度)in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longera person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference is.“Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language,” said the scientists. It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn.Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales has researched the link between bilingualism and maths skills. “Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible,”he said. “You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas.”The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of 2 and 34. Reading, writing, and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the y ounger they started to learn, the better. “Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world,” explained the scientists.( )1.The main subject talked about in this passage is________.A.science on learning a second languageB.man’s ability of learning a second languageC.language can benefit brain powerD.language learning and maths study2012二轮精品提分必练( )2.In the second paragraph, the writer men tions “exercise” in order to________.A.say language is also a kind of physical laborB.prove that one needs more practice when he (she) is learning a languageC.show the importance of using the language when you learn the languageD.make people believe language learning helps grey matter work well ( )3.We may know from the scientific findings that________.A.the earlier you start to learn a second language the higher the grey matter density isB.there is no difference between a later second language learner and one who doesn’t know a second languageC.the experience of learning a second language has bad effect on people’s brainD.the ability of learning a second language is changing all the time ( )4.In the last two paragraphs, the author wants to tell usthat________.A.learning a second language is the same as studying mathsB.early learning of a second language helps you a great deal in studying other subjectsC.Italian is the best choice for you as a second languageD.you’d better choose the ages bet ween 2 and 34 to learn a second language(三)2012二轮精品提分必练If there is one thing that matters in high school—and for your whole life—it is friendship. My latest novel, THE UNWRITTEN RULE, is about a girl, Sarah, who falls for her best friend Brianna’s boyfriend, Ryan, but it’s more about wrestling with feelings for a guy that you know you shouldn’t have.A lot of the book deals with friendship, the kind of lifelong friendship that means the world to you…and what happens when you realize that maybe it isn’t what you think it is.Maybe your best friend isn’t your best friend.Maybe she isn’t even a friend at all.Friendships are tricky things. You can be sure everything is fine, and that your friendship is going to last forever…and it can just end.No explanation, no anything. And it is not easy.In fact, I think losing a friend is worse than losing a boyfriend, especially when it is a friend you’ve had in your l ife for a long time. One of the things that Sarah struggles with in THE UNWRITTEN RULE, beyond her feelings for Ryan, is her friendship with Brianna—how long they’ve been friends, how she understands Brianna in a way no one else does, and what to do when a crack appears in their friendship, not because of Sarah’s feelings for Ryan, but because Sarah begins to wonder if maybe Brianna isn’t her best friend after all.Having a friendship end is incredibly painful and one of the things I hated when I was younger—and that I still hate now—is how people say, “Oh, it’ll be Okay. You’ll move on; you’ll be fine.”It is true that you will eventually move on and that you will be fine. But you will also always carry that lost friendship with you.It may not take up all of your heart like it does at first, but it will take part of it.And that, I think, is something no one ever talks about and that Iwish we could—and would. What do you do when someone you are friends with decides your friendship is over? How do you deal with it?Maybe my latest novel can provide something for you.( )1.From the passage we can infer that ________.A.it may take Sarah a long time to recover after she lost Brianna’s friendshipB.Sarah and Brianna are still best friends after a long period of timeC.Sarah does not value Brianna’s friendship at allD.Ryan would feel puzzled about his real love( )2.What do you think the book THE UNWRITTEN RULE is mainly about?A.Friendship.B.School life.C.Love.D.Wrestling with feelings.( )3.What’s the writer’s attitude towards friendship?A.We will all lose some friends in our life.B.Ending a friendship is worse than losing a boyfriend.C.It’s usual when a crack appears.D.You will eventually move on after you lose a friendship.( )4.What do you think is the best title for the passage above?A.My Latest NovelB.Tricky FriendsC.Sarah and BriannaD.Unforgettable Friendship专题限时训练(二十一) [文化型阅读理解(一)](一)1.A 主旨大意题。

高考英语二轮复习专项训练阅读理解(教育文化)含解析一、高中英语阅读理解教育文化类1.阅读理解When a child is told he is "uncool", it can be very painful. He may say he doesn't care, and even act in ways that are opposite of cool on purpose(故意地). But these are simple ways to deal with sadness by pretending it's not there.Helping a child feel better in school has to be careful. If you say, "Why are you worried about what other children think about you? It doesn't matter!" Children know that it does matter. Instead, an active way may be best. You could say, "I'm going to do a couple of things for you to help you feel better in school."If a boy is having trouble making friends, the teacher can help him. The teacher can arrange things so that he has chances to use his abilities to contribute to class projects. This is how the other children learn how to value his good qualities and to like him. A teacher can also raise a child's popularity in the group by showing that he values that child. It even helps to put him in a seat next to a very popular child, or let him be a partner with that child in activities, etc. There are things that parents can do at home, too. Be friendly when your child brings others home to play. Encourage him to invite friends to meals and then serve the dishes they consider "super". When you plan trips, picnics, movies, and other shows, invite another child with whom your child wants to be friends. What you can do is give him a chance to join a group that may be shutting him out. Then, if he has good qualities, he can start to build real friendship of his own.(1)A child who has been informed of being "uncool" may .A.care nothing about itB.do something uncool on purposeC.develop a sense of angerD.pretend to get hurt very much(2)A teacher can help an unpopular child by .A.seeing the child as the teacher's favouriteB.asking the child to do something for partnersC.forcing other children to make friends with the childD.offering the child chances to show his good qualities(3)How can parents help their child fit in better?A.By taking him to have picnics in the park.B.By being kind to his schoolmates.C.By forcing him to invite friends home.D.By cooking delicious food for him.【答案】(1)B(2)D(3)B【解析】【分析】本文是一篇议论文,论述了在学校里的老师及在家里的父母都可以做很多事情来让不受欢迎的孩子受到欢迎。

AArtist Zsudayka zing Terrell talked about her family s history,“My people were brought here on the bottom of a ship. They were sold and re-named. My dad s side of the family took the last name of his job, butlers. My mom s side of the family took the last name of the plantation (大農场).” Today, she and her husband, artist James Terrell, explore that identity in their work. Their new exhibit of paintings recently in Manassas,Virginia is called “Born at the B ottom of the Ship”.Over the generations,Africans became African Americans with a new culture, and Nina Terrell includes different parts of that story in her art. There are things that look like African cloth and design and things that make you think of A merican culture. An example is “Hope and Grace”, a painting of two women wearing colorful clothes with traditional African patterns. Pointing to their hair, she says,“They have these big afros (非洲发型)so it could be 1960,it could be 2018.”James Terrell s style is more abstract. Maim Water, the first painting visitors see in the exhibit, shows a woman rising from the ocean. Terrell explains,“Maim Water i s a goddess of the sea... There’s no light going through; there’s not a lot of color being seen,as opposed to the other ones. So,it’s just showing the time of the slaves being brought to America.”But he also likes to play with color. Growing up,Terrell attended a church with colored glass windows, and he learned how light goes through the windows. He makes lines in his painting that look like the lines between pieces of colored glass in the church windows. His works show how he seeshimself as an African American. He wants the people in his painting to look happy, hopeful and strong.Visitors to the art exhibit say they see themselves and their family members in the works. They like the different kinds of people in the paintings because they know many Americans come from other countries and cultures.1. What does their ancestors being re-named imply?A. When in Rome,do as Romans do.B. They belonged to a certain slaveholder.C. The black slaves didn’t have any freedom.D. Slave owners treated them like a family.2. What does zing tend to indicate with the last sentence in Para. 2?A. Africans stick to old ways.B. She has been over 50 years old.C. Much has changed over the decades.D. They’ll never forget their own culture.3. How does James reflect the tragic content in his paintings?A. With dim background.B. With sea water and gods.C. With glass windows reflection.D. Through character s expression.4. What do you learn from the last paragraphs?A. His life was full of suffering.B. Most of the visitors were black.C. James once went to a church school.D. James s experience led to his career.BModern life often presents us with a problem. Our ethics (倫理学)and thoughts conflict with the needs of daily life. Many products we buy may cause harm to animals, the environment,or people. However, the latest diet trend—pagan—tries to solve it and combine nutrition with ethics. “This way of eating makes the most sense for our health and the health of ourplanet. It is sustainable (可持续的)and kinder to animals,” Dr Mark Hyman, the creator of the trend, told The Telegraph.Pagan combines “pale” and “vegan”,two popular diets that are opposites. Vegans (纯素食主义),like vegetarians, don t eat meat. However, they don t eat eggs, dairy,or other animal products either. Veganism is an ethical choice for people who care about the environme nt and the cruelty of modern animal farming. Pales,on the other hand, eat lots of meat and fruit, while avoiding grains and dairy. For pales,it’s about proper nutrition. They want to bring back the diet of prehistoric humans to modern society, saying that we did not evolve to eat bread and cheeses. They will order a hamburger without the bun. Both diets lack dairy products like cheese and yogurt. The rest is a compromise. About 75 percent of a pegan diet should be fruits and vegetables. It is not a bad th ing because “they are rich in fiber for a healthy body and are low in calories which can help keep a healthy weight”,Dietician Chloe Hall told the Huff Post. What about meat?In the pagan diet, meat becomes a side dish. When it comes, people from around the world, including 5,000 in the small town today, watch this tongue-twisting (发音饶舌的)small town for a sign from one groundhog that supposedly predicts when that years' spring will arrive. If it's a cloudy day outside when the groundhog pops from its cave, then spring will arrive early that year. However,if it is sunny outside, the groundhog will supposedly be scared by its own shadow, hiding underground for six more weeks of cold weather.Of course,Punxsutawney Phil's prediction is no more able to guarantee the extended forecast than your local weatherman. ABC News reports that an analysis by the National Climate Data Center found that Phil's predictions are more often wrong than right.Philips is also found to have made some unpleasant predictions. Ever since 1887,he has predicted 99 extended winters and just 16 early springs. Nine of the years' predictions were unavailable, according to ABC.The holiday began as a German tradition in 18th century and became even more of a cultural phenomenon after the 1993 film Groundhog Day starring Bill Murray. Punxsutawney Phil has become a celebrity in his own right. Each year, the fatter animal with long teeth is watched by millions as he emerges from a cave in the town he is named after. Regrettably, mosquitoes can do more than cause an itchy (发痒的)wound. Some mosquitoes spread several serious diseases. New research now shows how mosquitoes choose who to bite.Mosquitoes need blood to survive. They are attracted to human skin and breath. They smell the carbon dioxide gas, which all mammals breathe out. This gas is the main way for mosquitoes to know that a warm-blooded creature is nearby. But mosquitoes also use their eyes and sense of touch. Michael Dickinson is a professor at the California Institute of Technology. His research shows how these small insects, with even smaller brains, use three senses to find a blood meal.Michael Dickinson's team used plumes—a material that rises into the air of carbon dioxide gas into a wind tunnel. They then used cameras to record the mosquitoes. The insects followed the plume. Then, the scientists placed dark objects on the lighter colored floor and walls of the tunnel. Mr. Dickinson said,at first, the mosquitoes showed no interest in the objects at all. “What was quite striking and quite surprising is that the mosquitoes fly back and forth for hours. These are hungry females and they completely ignore the objects on the floor and wall of the tunnel. But the moment they get a hit of CO2,they change their behavior quite obviously and now would become attracted to these little visual blobs (斑点).”This suggested to the researchers that a mosquito's sense of smell is more important in the search for food. Once mosquitoes catch a smell of a human or animal, they also follow visual signals.5. What do mosquitoes mainly use to find their targets?A. Sense of smell.B. Sense of touch.C. Sense of sight.D. Smart brains.6. The first response of the mosquitoes to the objects in the experiment is ___.A. to fly to the dark onesB. to catch and stick to themC. to take no notice of themD. to attach themselves to them7. How can we avoid being attacked by mosquitoes according to the text?A. Don't let them see us.B. Use dark objects to stop them.C. Make them fly back and forth for hours.D. Attract them to objects full of carbon dioxide gas.8. What can be the best title for the text?A. How Do Mosquitoes Survive?B. Why Do Mosquitoes Need Blood?C. How Do Mosquitoes Choose to Bite You?D. Why Do Mosquitoes Attack the Human Being?答案A 1—4 CDABB 1—4 DCABC)1—4 BDCDD)5—8 ACDC。

In exchange, some kids get allowances or other rewards such as extra computer time. But some people do not think that kids should get rewards for doing chores. Susie Walton, a parenting educator and family coach, believes that by rewarding kids, parents are sending a message that work isn't worth doing unless you get something in return. "Running any kind of household is a team effort, Susie said. "A home is a living space for everyone in the family. It's important for kids to see that we all have responsibilities in the house, and that families decide together how they want their home to look, and how they are going to keep it looking like everyone wants it to look."Other people believe that getting a cash allowance or other rewards motivates kids to do chores, and it also teaches them real world lessons about how we need to work to earn money. There are also new applications that give kids points and digital gifts that can be redeemed (兑取) either online or in the real world. With the ChoreMonster app, kids earn digital points by completing chores that they can turn in for real-life rewards such as extra Xbox time or a trip to the mall. "Our goal is to encourage kids to earn rewards," says Chris Bergman, founder of ChoreMonster. "Kids need positive reinforcement to help motivate them."What do you think? 专题限时训练(三十三) [文化教育型阅读理解(二)](限时:25分钟)(一)Human remains of ancient settlements will be reburied and lost to science under a law that threatens research into the history of humans in Britain, a group of leading archeologists (考古学家) say. In a letter addressed to the justice secretary, Ken Clarke, 40 archaeologists write of their “deep and widespread concern” about the issue. It centres on the law introduced by the Ministry of Justice in 2008 which requires all human remains unearthed in England and Wales to be reburied within two years, regardless of their age. The decision means scientists have too little time to study bones and other human remains of national and cultural significance.“Your current requirement that all archaeologically unearthed human remains should be reburied, whether after a standard period of two years or a further special extension, is contrary to basic principles of archaeological and scientific research and of museum practice,” they write. The law applies to any pieces of bone uncovered at around 400 dig sites, including the remains of bodies found at Stonehenge in 2008 that date back to 3,000 BC.Archaeologists have been granted a temporary extension to give them more time, but eventually the bones will have to be returned to the ground. The arrangements may result in the waste of future discoveries at sites such as Happisburgh in Norfolk, where digging is continuing after the discovery of stone tools made by early humans 950,000 years ago. If human remains were found at Happisburgh, they would be the oldest in northern Europe and the first indication of what this species was. Under the current practice of the law, those remains would have to be reburied and effectively destroyed. Before 2008, guidelines allowed for the proper preservation and study of bones of sufficient age and historical interest, while the Burial Act1857 applied to more recent remains. The Ministry of Justice assured archaeologists two years ago that the law was temporary, but has so far failed to revise it.Mike Parker Pearson, an archaeologist at Sheffield University, said, “Archaeologists have been extremely patient because we were led to believe the ministry was sorting out this problem, but we feel that we cannot wait any longer.”The ministry has no guidelines on where or how remains should be reburied, or on what records should be kept.1.According to the passage, scientists are unhappy with the law mainly because ________.A.it is only a temporary measure on the human remainsB.it is unreasonable and thus destructive to scientific researchC.it was introduced by the government without their knowledgeD.it is vague about where and how to rebury human remains2.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?A.Temporary extension of two years will guarantee scientists enough time.B.Human remains of the oldest species were dug out at Happisburgh.C.Human remains will have to be reburied despite the extension of time.D.Scientists have been warned that the law can hardly be changed.3.What can be inferred about the British law governing human remains?A.The Ministry of Justice did not intend to protect human remains.B.The Burial Act 1857 only applied to remains uncovered before 1857.C.The law on human remains hasn't changed in recent decades.D.The Ministry of Justice has not done enough about the law.4.Which of the following might be the main idea of the passage?A.New discoveries should be reburied, the government demands.B.Research time should be extended, scientists require.C.Law on human remains needs thorough discussion, authorities say.D.Law could bury ancient secrets forever, archeologists warn.(二)Looking for some inspiration or ideas for your creative stories? To start with, some writers describe winter by using their five senses or their imagination. Others write on their favourite winter activities. Whatever you choose to write about, working on a winter story can always help to improve your writing skills. Now read the following story and see if it helps get rid of any icy writing block you've been struggling with.Beep, beep. Beepbeep: the alarm clock rang. Slowly, I got out of warm bed down onto the wooden floor which the winter had thrown its cold upon. The bitter cold temperature penetrated (穿透)my socks and I hurried to put my feet in shoes.Looking out of the window, I watched the white snow, soft and thick, drop onto rooftops and trees. Half an hour later, finishing the last of my hot chocolate, I prepared to enter the adventure that waited for me outside. I buttoned my jacket and fastened my boots. Hat on, I opened the door and was greeted by the winter coldness. In the depths of winter, the early morning did not have the rush of the rest of the year. Most of my neighbours were put off by the cold, and stayed in bed until the sun had climbed higher into the sky.Unseen by those who remained locked inside their homes, warm in their beds, I enjoyed being alone with the beauty of the wintertime. Those indoors were unable to appreciate the snows capes, ice crystals, frost and the crisp(清新的)breeze. For them, the coming of winter meant just the arrival of the cold.Appreciation depends on contrasts. One cannot love the warmth of April if one has not known the freezing cold of winter. Later that year, the heat of the sun on my skin would be wonderful for my memories of that cold morning and others like it.1.The underlined word “adventure” refers to“________”.A.getting out of bed on the cold winter morningB.enjoying the loveliness of the winter outdoorsC.going skiing on the cold winter morningD.throwing snowballs with friends2.According to the story, most of the neighbours ________.A.didn't work in winterB.stayed up late in winterC.missed the beauty of winterD.enjoyed the seasons except winter3.Which of these statements is TRUE according to the story?A.Of all the seasons, the writer loves winter most.B.The writer regrets that he went out on the freezing cold winter morning.C.The writer believes contrasts make our experiences of the seasons lovelier.D.The writer values autumn and summer more than winter.4.What function does the story mentioned in the passage serve?A.To share some winter thoughts with readers.B.To show readers how to work on a winter story.C.To inspire readers to take more exercise in winter.D.To tell readers how to appreciate the beauty of winter.(三)Recently, a student used his Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) to film a female teacher scolding and tearing the work of a classmate. The public discussion that the incident caused started on the Internet. However, when it came to the media's attention, it quickly became a major topic in the education circles. The reactions so far suggest that the focus of the debate has been on one question: whom to blame?Teachers who are anxious to defend their professional dignity have tried to put the blame on the students. They mentioned their right to privacy(隐私)and for this reason they requested the Ministry of Education (MOE) to prohibit PDAs in schools. On the other hand, some parents and students have taken a different position. They feel that the teacher is also at fault. Caught up in the war of words between both sides, people are no longer interested in the “truth” of the matter which seems now unimportant. It was left to newspapers to discover the central point of the controversial issue, by stressing the problems that are not always easily noticed in our educational system. For those responsible for educating the young, this PDA incident conveys the message that “times have changed”,a reality that must have been felt even more strongly by the female teacher when reflecting on this unpleasant experience. Different times call for different professional approaches in education. The ability to understand the students they are teaching has always been the quality of successful teachers. Despite some factors, the incident shows that the teacher lacks good qualities on her part. Besides, the rules under current system to deal with recalcitrant students need to be improved. Also, it is an example which shows the issue we are familiar with: what to do with new technology? With PDAs, the new technology, the interaction (交流)between the teachers and students in classroom has been changed.1.The author's purpose in writing this passage is to________.A.improve the teacher's way of teachingB.stress the using of PDAs in the classroomC.change the students' behaviour in the classroomD.discuss the potential problems of educational system2.The underlined word “recalcitrant” in Paragraph 3 probably means“________”.A.difficult to controlB.interested in nothingC.unwilling to learnD.ready to obey rules3.The writer's attitude towards the PDA incident is________.A.optimisticB.criticalC.uncertainD.approvable4.What might be the best title for the passage?A.Whom to blame?B.The PDA incidentC.Times have changedD.What to do with new technology?专题限时训练(三十三)(一)【要点综述】英国法律规定,所有从人类古代居地出土的遗骸,必须被重新掩埋。

高考英语二轮专题复习提分训练“阅读理解”文化教育类(真题,含解析)[1]Passage 1 (2011•辽宁卷• B)About 21,000 young people in 17 American states do not attend classes in school buildings. Instead, they receive their elementary(初等)and high school education by working at home on computers. The Center for Education Reform says the United States has 67 public “cyberschools,” and that is about twice as many as two years ago.The money for students to attend a cyberschool comes from the governments of the states where they live. Some educators say cyberschools receive money that should support traditional public schools. They also say it is difficult to know if students are learning well.Other educators praise this new form of education for letting students work at their own speed. These people say cyberschools help students who were unhappy or unsuccessful in traditional schools. They say learning at home by computer ends long bus rides for children who live far from school.Whatever the judgment of cyberschools, they are getting more and more popular. For example, a new cyberschool called Commonwealth Connections Academy will take in students this fall. It will serve children in the state of Pennsylvania from ages five through thirteen.Children get free equipment for their online education. This includes a computer, a printer, books and technical services. Parents a nd students talk with teachers by telephone or by sending emails through their computers when necessary.Students at cyberschools usually do not know one another. But 56 such students who finished studies at Western Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School recently met for the first time. They were guests of honor at their graduation.59. 高考英语高中英语阅读理解(教育文化)的技巧及练习题及练习题(含答案)一、高中英语阅读理解教育文化类1.阅读理解It's a common belief that the roles actors play might somehow reflect their true personalities. It's usually not true, but British actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge, 34, is an exception.Just like Fleabag, the character she played in the comedy-drama series of the same name, Waller-Bridge feels that her life is a mess. "It's just really wonderful to know that a dirty and messed up woman can make it to the Emmys," she said. She may be "messed up", but Variety magazine calls her an "all-around icon".Last month, Waller-Bridge took home three Emmy awards for her work on Fleabag —best writing in a comedy series, best lead actress, and best comedy series. Her success is partly because of her family. Waller-Bridge was brought up in a free environment. Her mother always told her, "You can be whatever you want if you imagine it." So Waller-Bridge broke all the rules about what a "good" girl should do. "Our laws and moral codes don't apply —she lives without fear of consequence," The Sun noted. That fearlessness extends to being authentic (真实的) in her writing and acting. Unlike the can-do heroines and strong, successful women in many TV dramas, Waller-Bridge shows a flawed but real character. The character Fleabag was a screw-up who always found a way to say or do the wrong thing. "It resonated with the lives of stressed-out women everywhere in reality — doing their best to find balance in their lives," a viewer wrote on US movie website.Villanelle in Killing Eve, another hit TV series developed by Waller-Bridge, was a little bit violent but showed no interest for the rules others created, which make many people see themselves in her."People have been scared to write characters like these. But I think, now, women are so relieved to have this new template (样板). And, aren't we all a bit of everything?" Waller-Bridge said in an interview with Indian Express. With such courage and sincerity, Waller-Bridge is, without a doubt, a "golden girl" in Hollywood, Australian news website The New Daily commented.(1)What is the article mainly about?A.What helped Waller-Bridge succeed in comedy.B.The popularity of the comedy-drama series Fleabag.C.What inspired Waller-Bridge to take up writing and acting.D.The similarities between Phoebe Waller-Bridge and the character she plays on Fleabag.(2)How did Waller-Bridge's parents influence her growth?A.They pushed her to follow social codes.B.They constantly encouraged her to be herself.C.They always reminded her to be curious and fearless.D.They taught her to write and act when she was young.(3)The underlined phrase "resonated with" in Paragraph 7 probably means "__________".A.messed upB.paid attention toC.had great effects onD.was in agreement with(4)What do Villanelle in Killing Eve and Fleabag in Fleabag have in common?A.Both are courageous and organized.B.Both are much alike in character.C.Both successfully find balance in their lives.D.Both are rebellious but strong and successful.【答案】(1)A(2)B(3)D(4)B【解析】【分析】本文是一篇说明文,介绍了喜剧演员沃勒·布里奇,因其真诚的个性特点在喜剧上获得了成功,说明了勇于表达真实的自己更为人们欣赏。

专题限时训练(三十一) [文化教育型阅读理解(一)](限时:25分钟)(一)It is a plain fact that we are in a world where competition is going on in all areas and at all levels. This is exciting. Yet, on the other hand, competition breeds a pragmatic(实用的) attitude. People choose to learn things that are useful, and do things that are profitable. Today's college education is also affected by this general sense of utilitarianism(功利主义).Many college students choose business or computing programming as their majors convinced that these professions are where the big money is. It is not unusual to see the college students taking parttime jobs as a warmingup for the real battle.I often see my friends taking GRE tests, working on English or computer certificates and taking the driving lessons to get a license. Well, I have nothing against being practical. As the competition in the job market gets more and more intense, students do have reasons to be practical. However, we should never forget that college education is much more than skill training. Just imagine, if your utilitarianism prevails on campus, living no space for the cultivation(培养) of students' minds, or nurturing of their soul, we will see university is training out well trained spiritless working machines. If util itarianism prevails society, we will see people bond by mindforged medicals lost in the moneymaking ventures; we will see humanity losing their grace and dignity, and that would be disastrous. I'd like to think society as a carriage and people's pursuit for profit or fame as the horse that pulls the carriage. Yet without the driver picking direction the carriage would go straight and may even end up in a precarious situation.A certificate may give you some advantage, but broad horizons, positive attitudes and personal integrities(正直),these are assets you cannot acquire through any quick fixed way. In today's world, where highest level of competition is not of skills or expertise(专业), but of vision and strategy, your intellectual quality largely determines how far you can go in your career.1.The author's attitude toward today's college education is________.A.positive B.cautiousC.critical D.doubtful2.Many college students choose to major in business because________.A.a businessman is very likely to make big moneyB.studying business is less competitiveC.too many students have chosen computing programmingD.computing programming is not a must for them3.The author does strongly suggest that ________.A.more competition be encouraged on college campusB.people not ignore the value of broad horizons, positive attitude and personalintegritiesC.intellectual quality determine how far one can go in his careerD.college students get as many parttime jobs as possible4.In the author's opinion,________.A.college students are not pragmatic enoughB.college students should have drivers pick direction for themC.college education should provide students with more business coursesD.college education should value the cultivation of students' minds(二)Do American children still learn handwriting in school? In the age of the keyboard, some people seem to think handwriting lessons are on the way out. 90% of teachers say they are required to teach handwriting. But studies have yet to answer the question of how well they are teaching it. One study published this year found that about three out of every four teachers say they are not prepared to teach handwriting. Some teachers are teaching handwriting by providing instruction for ten to fifteen minutes a day, and then other teachers who basically teach it for sixty to seventy minutes a day—which really for handwriting is pretty much death. Many adults remember learning that way—by copying letters over and over again. Today's thinking is that short periods of practice are better. Many experts also think handwriting should not be taught by itself. Instead, they say it should be used as a way to get students to express ideas. After all, that is why we write.Handwriting involves two skills. One is legibility, which means forming the letters so they can be read. The other is fluency—writing without having to think about it. Fluency continues to develop up until high school. But not everyone masters these skills. Teachers commonly report that about one fourth of their kids have poor handwriting. Some people might think handwriting is not important any more because of computers and voice recognition programs. But Steve Graham at Vanderbilt says word processing is rarely done in elementary school, especially in the early years. He sat but seconds later, as if he didn't even notice he was doing it, he got up again.I was getting frustrated, but then it hit me.I started noticing his answers were much quicker and accurate when he stood up.Could he be more intent while standing up?This made me start questioning myself and what I had been raised to believe.I was raised to believe that a quiet, calm child was a sure way to success. This child would have the discipline to study hard, get good grades and become someone important in life. Now those same people perhaps come to realize that their kids are born with their own sets of DNA and personality traits, and all you can do is loving and accepting them.As parents, throughout their growing years and beyond that, we need to be our kids' best cheerleaders, guiding them and helping them find their way.I have stopped asking my son to sit down and concentrate.Obviously, he is concentrating just in his own way and not mine.We need to learn to accept our kids' ways of doing things. Some way may have worked for me but doesn't mean we need to carry it through generations. There is nothing sweeter than being individual and unique. It makes us free and happy and that's just the way I want my kids to live their own life.1.
