For centuries people dreamed of going into space. This dream began to seem possible when high-flying rockets were built in the early 1900s.
In 1903 a Russian teacher named Konstantin Tsiolkovsky figured out how to use rockets for space travel. His plan was the first one in rocket science to use correct scientific calculation. About 30 years later, a U.S. scientist named Robert Goddard built the first rockets that could reach high altitudes. During World War II, German scientists built large rockets that could travel very far and carry dangerous explosives. After the war, scientists from Germany went to the United States and the Soviet Union to help those countries build space rockets.
Ancient Chinese texts inspired Tu Youyou's search for her Nobel-prize winning medicine. Mission 523 pored over ancient books to find historical methods of fighting malaria. When she started her search for an anti-malarial drug, over 240 000 compounds around the world had already been tested, without any success. Finally, the team found a brief reference to one substance, sweet wormwood, which had been used to treat malaria in China around 400 AD.

如下列两例:“His courage in battle might without exaggeration be called lion-like.” He was very brave in battle.”“He was hard up for money and was being pressed by his creditor.”可以概括为:“He was in financial difficulties.”6) 你还可以使用词组代替整句或者从句。

Later on,unlike other girls,I volunteered to go water-skiing alone.I put on the life jacket, got on the motorboat immediately and started my engine as soon as possible. The lake seemed broad and endless.I was so thrilled(激动)to enjoy my trip among the mountains and waters that I sped my motorboat. Then, after some time,I found myself in the middle of the endless lake.A sudden fear came around me.I didn’t know where I was or even how far I had gone from the shore. What was worse,it began to rain and it became very cold and foggy.I rode everywhere but couldn’t find my way back.It was useless for me to cry or shout for help.I was so terrified that I began to think about all kinds of horrible things. After floating on the water helplessly and hopelessly for a long time, suddenly I heard someone calling my name.Soon,a big steamboat sailed to me and they pulled me up to the deck and asked me if I was hurt.I couldn’t say a word but cried in my father’s arms.答案Once the writer was on a trip to a very big lake where she went water-skiing alone.(beginning).6分She was excited and sped up,having a very good time, but soon she got lost. She was frighted and desperate(progress).6分.Fortunately,her father finally came to her rescue.(ending).6分(45words)练习2After her husband had gone to work,Mrs Richards sent her children to school and went upstairs to her bedroom. She was too excited to do any housework that morning, for in the evening she would be going to a fancy dress party with her husband. She intended to dress up as a ghost and as she had made her costume the night before, she was impatient to try it on.Though the costume consisted only of a sheet,it was very effective. After putting it on,Mrs Richards went downstairs. She wanted to find out whether it would be comfortable to wear.Just as Mrs Richards was entering the dining-room,there was a knock on the front door. She knew that it must be the baker. She had told him to come straight in if ever she failed to open the door and to leave the bread on the kitchen table. Not wanting to frighten the poor man,Mrs Richards quickly hid in the small store-room under the stairs. She heard the front door open and heavy footsteps in the hall.Suddenly the door of the store-room was opened and a man entered. Mrs Richards realized that it must be the man from the Electricity Board who had come to read the meter. She tried to explain the situation, saying'It's only me',but it was too late. The man let out a cry and jumped back several paces. When Mrs Richards walked towards him,he fled, slamming the door behind him.答案Mrs.Richards had dressed up as a ghost and was just going into the dining room when there was a knock on the door.Thinking it was the baker, she hid in the storeroom under the stairs. She heard footsteps in the hall and then the man from the Electricity Board opened the storeroomdoor.Though she wanted to give explanation. When she walked towards him,he fled, slamming the front door behind him.(79words)练习3Mary and her husband Dimitri lived in the tiny village of Perachora in southern Greece. One of Mary's prize possessions was a little white lamb which her husband had given her.She kept it tied to a tree in a field during the day and went to fetch it every evening. One evening, however, the lamb was missing. The rope had been cut,so it was obvious that the lamb had been stolen. When Dimitri came in from the fields, his wife told him what had happened.Dimitri at once set out to find the thief. He knew it would not prove difficult in such a small village. After telling several of his friends about the theft,Dimitri found out that his neighbour,Aleko, had suddenly acquired a new lamb.Dimitri immediately went to Aleko's house and angrily accused him of stealing the lamb.He told him he had better return it or he would call the police.Aleko denied taking it and led Dimitri into his back-yard.It was true that he had just bought a lamb,he explained, but his lamb was black. If only there were hidden walls.Walls like the ones in Mom and Dad’s closet.Slipping quietly down the hall to the bedroom,I stood on tiptoe to reach the string for the closet light.Words and images filled my mind faster than my hands could make them.A brilliant rainbow was seen on one wall, with a cheery golden sun peeking out from above. Below,a giant shade tree supported a swing for stick-figure children.Around them, flowers bloomed everywhere. My masterpiece! All my very own magic!I took in the walls, the colors and the brightness. Joy swelled inside me.But as my creativity wound down,a thought popped up:I’ve got to show Mom!Suddenly I was still.Mom called out,“Dinner’s ready.”After a short time, her footsteps approached, and then finally, the closet door opened.I stood nervously in the corner.Mom breathed in sharply, then stood frozen.Only her eyes moved as she slowly looked over my masterpiece. She was quiet for a long, long time.I didn’t dare breathe. Finally, she turned to me.“I like it,”she said.“No,I love it!I feel like I have a new closet!”Now,45years later,my childhood artwork is still there. And in my own house, the closet walls are masterpieces, too, created by my own daughters when they were little girls.Every time I open a closet door,I remember that,as big as that box of crayons and white walls seemed when I was little,my mother’s love was the biggest thing of all.【范文1】One day when I was little,I created a beautiful picture on the walls in parents’closet.Although satisfied with it,I couldn’t imagine mom’s reaction.Instead of criticizing me for ruining the closet, mom thought highly of my artwork. Now I understand how much she loves me and I do the same to my children to develop their creativity.A great many people are often willing to sacrifice higher to pay for the privilege of becoming white collar workers. This can give rise to curious situations,as it did in the case of Alfred Bloggs who worked as a dustman for the Ellesmere Corporation. When he got married,Alf was too embarrassed to say anything to his wife about his job.He simply told her that he worked for the Corporation.Every morning,he left home dressed in a smart black suit.He then changed into overalls(n.工作服)and spent the next eight hours as a dustman. Before returning home at night,he took a shower and changed back into his suit.Alf did this for over two years and his fellow dustmen kept his secret.Alf's wife has never discovered that she married a dustman and she never will, for Alf has just found another job.He will soon be working in an office as a junior clerk. He will be earning only half as much as he used to,but he feels that his rise in status is well worth the loss of money. From now on,he will wear a suit all day and others will call him'Mr.Bloggs',not'Alf'.答案Many people prefer to give up higher pay to become white collar workers, which may cause some curious situation like the dustman,Alfred Bloggs. When he got married,he lied to his wife saying he worked for a Corporation. He dressed in a suit every morning, and changed into overalls at work.At night he changed back into suit before going home.He won't be found out because he will be an office worker in future.

Yesterday Matt was sick.I picked up Archie from the sitter and Eloise from school and decided to run to Target for a few things.I had hoped to be in and out quickly.I found a line with just one person ahead of me and began organizing my items on the conveyor. After placing my items,I looked up to see that the person ahead of me was an elderly woman. She was paying for her items with change and wanted to purchase each separately.I was frustrated with this woman and the inconvenience she had placed on me.But then I watched the young employee with this woman.I watched him help her count her change, ever so softly taking it from her shaking hands. When she asked if she had enough to buy a reusable bag,he told her she did and went two lines over to get one for her and then repackaged her items.Never once was this employee angry. He was nothing but patient and kind.As I was watching him,I saw that Eloise was too.She was standing next to the woman, watching the employee count the chang e.I realized I hadn’t been inconvenienced at all. That my daughter was instead witnessing kindness and patience and being taught this valuable lesson by a complete stranger. When the woman was finished, the employee began ringing up my items and thanked me for my patience.I then thanked him for teaching us patience and kindness by his treatment of that elderly woman. When he was finished I pushed my cart through the store trying to find the manager.I wanted her to know of the employee’s kindness and patience a nd how much it meant to me.After tracking her down and sharing the story with her,we left Target with a cart full of consumable items, but what is more,a heart full of gratitude for such an invaluable lesson. If you are ever in the Glendale Target, give Ishmael a smile and a nod.The world could use more people like him.________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________【写作指导】要写好记叙文的概要,先要找到以下两个问题的答案:(1)谁做了什么?(2)结果如何?

[1] That cold January night, I was growing sick of my life in San Francisco. There Iwas, walking home at one in the morning after a tiring practice at the theatre. With opening night only a week away, I was still learning my lines. I was having trouble dealing with my part-time job at the bank and my acting at night at the same time. AsI walked, I thought seriously about giving up both acting and San Francisco. City lifehad become too much for me.[2] As I walked down empty streets under tall buildings, I felt very small and cold. Ibegan running, both to keep warm and to keep away from any possible robbers. Very few people were still out except a few sad-looking homeless people under blankets.[3] About a block from my apartment, I heard a sound behind me. I turned quickly, half expecting to see someone with a knife or a gun. The street was empty. All I saw was a shining streetlight. Still, the noise had made me nervous, so I started to run faster. Not until I reached my apartment building and unlocked the door did I realize what the noise had been. It had been my wallet falling to the sidewalk(人行道).[4] Suddenly I wasn’t cold or tired anymor e. I ran out of the door and back to whereI’d heard the noise. Although I searched the sidewalk anxiously for fifteen minutes, my wallet was nowhere to be found.[5] Just as I was about to give up the search, I heard the garbage truck pull up to thesidewalk next to me. When a voice called from the inside, “Alisa Camacho?” I thought I was dreaming. How could this man know my name? The door opened, and out jumped a small red-haired man with an amused look in his eye. “Is this what you’re looking for?” he as ked, holding up a small square shape.[6] It was nearly 3 A.M. by the time I got into bed. I wouldn’t get much sleep thatnight, but I had gotten my wallet back. I also had gotten back some enjoyment of city life. I realized that the city couldn’t be a bad place as long as people were willing to help each other.Step 1: Read for text type and structure1)The text is a(n) narration(记叙文).2)Structure:六要素:time, place, character, cause(起因), process(经过) and outcome(结果)+主题(theme)Step 2: Find out the elements of the narrationOne cold January night, I was walking home, thinking about giving up both acting and her tiring life in San Francisco. As I planned the meal in my head, I reflected on how many times over the years I had been asked to prepare food. I have done so countless times with a very open heart. But the truly amazing thing is that I have received double over the course of my life. When my mother passed away, our house was filled with fresh dinners for weeks.A woman from the church of our community stopped by each evening with some food. The gift of food was her small way of trying to relieve our pain.2Later in my life, when I was on bed rest during my pregnancy with twins, men of the church again stepped in to help. They arranged babysitting for my two-year-old daughter, and brought lovely dinners to our house. Even when I was put in the hospital, my husband would bring cooked meals to my hospital room. How we relied on these dinners to feed my tired husband and young daughter.Food is all about comfort. It feeds our bodies, but it can also feed our souls. When you hear people talking about their favorite holidays, it usually includes their feelings connected with sharing food. I know that I will have many more opportunities in my lifetime to prepare food for others. It is truly a gift I want to prepare and deliver to someone in need. One day I received a call asking me to prepare food for a family in need. I was glad to do that. When her mother passed away and when she got pregnant, the church of her community brought food to her family, which was a great relief. That’s why when others were in need of help, I was pleased to lend a hand.3。

Tu Youyou has become the first Chinese woman to win a Nobel Prize, for her work in helping to create an anti-malaria medicine. The 84-year-old's route to the honor has been anything but traditional. Tu Youyou started her malaria research after she was recruited to a top-secret government unit known as “mission 523”. In 1967, Communist leader Mao Zedong decided there was an urgent national need to find a cure for malaria. At the time, malaria spread by Vietnam. A secret research unit was formed to find a cure for the illness. Two years later, Tu Youyou was instructed to become the new head of Mission 523. She was dispatched to the southern Chinese island of Hainan to study how malaria threatened human health.

This dream began to seem possible when high-flying rockets were built in the early 1900s.In 1903 a Russian teacher named Konstantin Tsiolkovsky figured out how to use rockets for space travel. These two countries were soon racing to get to space first. Each of these countries wanted to prove that it was stronger and more advanced than the other one. Both countries also had powerful bombs. People in the United States were worried when the Soviets were first to launch a space satellite, which was called Sputnik. The Soviets were also first to send a person into space. Yury Gagarin orbited the earth in the Vostok I spaceship in 1961.The US government set a goal for its space program to be the first country to put a person on the Moon. The U.S. space program built a series of Apollo spaceship. These vehicles were powered by huge Saturn 5 rockets. In 1969 Apollo II took three men to the moon successfully. Nell Armstrong became the first person to walk on the Moon. The Soviets may have lost the race to fly people to the Moon, but they built the first space station in 1971. The United States also built a space station. The space stations allowed people to live and work in space. Then the Soviet Union and the United States cooperated to hook two spaceships together in space. This action ended the "space race". Today a much larger space station, built by several countries together, orbits Earth.Another new way to go to space is by space shuttle. A space shuttle, first made in the United States in 1981, looks like an airplane. Astronauts who fly spaceships have used shuttles to help put satellites into space. 1】The 84-year-old's route to the honor has been anything but traditional. In 1967, Communist leader Mao Zedong decided there was an urgent national need to find a cure for malaria. I tried to wake up my wife by ringing the door-bell, but she was fast asleep, so I got a ladder from the shed in the garden, put it against the wall, and began climbing towards the bedroom window. I was almost there when a sarcastic voice below said, “I don't think the windows need cleaning at this time of the night.”I looked down and nearly fell off the ladder when I saw a policeman. I immediately regretted answering in the way I did, but I said, “I enjoy cleaning windows at night.”“So do I,” answered the policeman in the same tone. “Excuse my interrupting you. I hate to interrupt a man when he's busy working, but would you mind coming with me to the station ?”“Well, I'd prefer to stay here,” I said. “You see, I've forgotten my key.”“Your what ?” he called.“My key,” I shouted.Fortunately, the shouting woke up my wife who opened the window just as the policeman had started to climb towards me.
