//一日,男人来探视时竟带了一小袋炸婵蛹来,黄灿灿,香脆脆的。

When Samfirst got to his boarding school with his parents, he was very happy. He thought he would be able to go home every weekend. When he was told he would not, he started crying because the thought of not seeing his parents was driving him crazy. He was given uniforms and all otherthings that he would need for the term.He started crying when it was time for his parents to leave. He was then taken to the dorm, where he saw other children happy. He tried as much as he could to fit in but could not because his mind was at home. He started feeling homesick(想家)and wanted to go homes as soon as possible. He got sick soon because he could not eat the school food. He could not concentrate in the classroom. All he could think was being at home with his family. He had no mobile phone or other means to get in touch with his parents. He was angry and felt lonely. He thought his parents hated him and that was why they left him in a boarding school.[写作内容]1.

Summary WritingDirections: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible。

A篇Are Open Offices Good for Us?Four years ago, Chris Nagele did what many other technology executives have done before –moved his team into an open concept office. His staff had been entirely working from home, but he wanted everyone to be together, to connect and cooperate more easily。

It quickly became clear, though, that Nagele had made a huge mistake. Everyone was distracted and productivity suffered and nine employees were unhappy, not to mention Nagele himself. About three years after moving into the open office, Nagele moved the company into a 10,000-square foot office where everyone now has their own space - complete with closing doors.Numerous companies have held the open office - about 70% of US offices are open concept —and very few have moved back into traditional spaces with offices and doors。

Later on,unlike other girls,I volunteered to go water-skiing alone.I put on the life jacket, got on the motorboat immediately and started my engine as soon as possible. The lake seemed broad and endless.I was so thrilled(激动)to enjoy my trip among the mountains and waters that I sped my motorboat. Then, after some time,I found myself in the middle of the endless lake.A sudden fear came around me.I didn’t know where I was or even how far I had gone from the shore. What was worse,it began to rain and it became very cold and foggy.I rode everywhere but couldn’t find my way back.It was useless for me to cry or shout for help.I was so terrified that I began to think about all kinds of horrible things. After floating on the water helplessly and hopelessly for a long time, suddenly I heard someone calling my name.Soon,a big steamboat sailed to me and they pulled me up to the deck and asked me if I was hurt.I couldn’t say a word but cried in my father’s arms.答案Once the writer was on a trip to a very big lake where she went water-skiing alone.(beginning).6分She was excited and sped up,having a very good time, but soon she got lost. She was frighted and desperate(progress).6分.Fortunately,her father finally came to her rescue.(ending).6分(45words)练习2After her husband had gone to work,Mrs Richards sent her children to school and went upstairs to her bedroom. She was too excited to do any housework that morning, for in the evening she would be going to a fancy dress party with her husband. She intended to dress up as a ghost and as she had made her costume the night before, she was impatient to try it on.Though the costume consisted only of a sheet,it was very effective. After putting it on,Mrs Richards went downstairs. She wanted to find out whether it would be comfortable to wear.Just as Mrs Richards was entering the dining-room,there was a knock on the front door. She knew that it must be the baker. She had told him to come straight in if ever she failed to open the door and to leave the bread on the kitchen table. Not wanting to frighten the poor man,Mrs Richards quickly hid in the small store-room under the stairs. She heard the front door open and heavy footsteps in the hall.Suddenly the door of the store-room was opened and a man entered. Mrs Richards realized that it must be the man from the Electricity Board who had come to read the meter. She tried to explain the situation, saying'It's only me',but it was too late. The man let out a cry and jumped back several paces. When Mrs Richards walked towards him,he fled, slamming the door behind him.答案Mrs.Richards had dressed up as a ghost and was just going into the dining room when there was a knock on the door.Thinking it was the baker, she hid in the storeroom under the stairs. She heard footsteps in the hall and then the man from the Electricity Board opened the storeroomdoor.Though she wanted to give explanation. When she walked towards him,he fled, slamming the front door behind him.(79words)练习3Mary and her husband Dimitri lived in the tiny village of Perachora in southern Greece. One of Mary's prize possessions was a little white lamb which her husband had given her.She kept it tied to a tree in a field during the day and went to fetch it every evening. One evening, however, the lamb was missing. The rope had been cut,so it was obvious that the lamb had been stolen. When Dimitri came in from the fields, his wife told him what had happened.Dimitri at once set out to find the thief. He knew it would not prove difficult in such a small village. After telling several of his friends about the theft,Dimitri found out that his neighbour,Aleko, had suddenly acquired a new lamb.Dimitri immediately went to Aleko's house and angrily accused him of stealing the lamb.He told him he had better return it or he would call the police.Aleko denied taking it and led Dimitri into his back-yard.It was true that he had just bought a lamb,he explained, but his lamb was black. Ashamed of having acted so rashly,Dimitri apologized to Aleko for having accused him. While they were talking it began to rain and Dimitri stayed in Aleko's house until the rain stopped. When he went outside half an hour later,he was astonished to find that the little black lamb was almost white. Its wool, which had been dyed black, had been washed clean by the rain!答案When Dimitri came home,Mary told him that her white lamb had been stolen. On learning that his neighbour,Aleko, had acquired a lamb,Dimitri went to Aleko's house and accused him of stealing it.When Aleko showed his lamb,Dimitri saw it was black,so he apologized. After staying in Aleko's house for a while because it had begun to rain,Dimitri got a surprise outside when he found the lamb was almost white. It had been dyed black!(80words)练习4Last year my company was brought by a large corporation and most of the managers lost their jobs. That was when i decided to do something I’d always wanted to do-------become a freelance writer(自由作家).Changing professions has meant that my lifestyle has changed in a number of ways.I work about as much as I did before-------between45and50hours a week---but my schedule is much less fixed than it used to be.Before,I worked from8am to5pm,everyday,with a few extra hours on weekends. Now,however,I work when I feel like it.For instance, sometimes I work until midnight or2.am,then sleep until noon.I really prefer this kind of schedule. While I was working as a manager,I never exercised.I already felt tired after work,so I just came home in the evening and watched TV.However, last year I joined a health club and began to do regular exercise. As a result I have lost over10pounds and I feel much better,I’ve also started to eat more healthfully.I used to eat a lot of fast food, but now I do my own shopping.I buy lots of fruits and vegetables and cook them at home.Of course, not all the changes have been that easy. For example,I don’t feel as safe financially as used to.When I was working as a manager.I never worried much about money.I could always count on getting my paycheck every two weeks.Working freelance,I don’t have a regular paycheck. So now I have to make sure that there’s enough money until the next check arrives.范文:After the author quit his previous job and became a freelance writer. Some changes his life. The work schedule became more flexible. He has also done more exercise and ate healthy. But he might not get regular wages. He found that the present lifestyle is suitable for him. 14The real kindness and generosityThis was an unforgettable and wonderful experience. It happened about three years ago and it has had a strong effect on me.I would like to show respect here for the man I do not know personally but whose actions gave a new meaning to the words—kind and generous.I was walking down a busy street on a cold, windy day in early winter.A homeless man, probably about60andwithout wearing any shoes, was begging for change on a street corner.A BMW car pulled up on the other side of the street and an executive(主管)who was perfectly dressed stepped out of the car.He was probably about60years old.He was wearing a blue business suit with a deep red silk tie.He walked directly across the street and over to the homeless man.Without saying anything,he first gave him a lot of money and then he sat down and took off his leather gloves, beautiful black leather shoes and his black dresssocks. Then he handed them to the homeless man.The homeless man took them and stared at him with an open mouth. As he drove off,I couldn’t help thinking that it was probably the first time he had pressed the pedal(踏板)of that top-brand BMW car with a bare foot!I stood there and the looks of astonishment appeared on my face and the homeless man’s.Two men of about the same age but very different lives had met and the one who was successful in materials had offered more than his shoes. He had left this BMW car and stepped down from his high position. He lifted up the other man when he offered respect, kindness and real generosity. On a freezing winter day,a successful businessman of60happened to come across a poor beggar of the same age.He walked out of his BMW and gave the beggar a lot of money and even his own shoes and socks. As a witness, the author was as astonished as the beggar. This unforgettable experience taught the author the new meaning of kindness and generosity.(66 words)练习6Yesterday Matt was sick.I picked up Archie from the sitter and Eloise from school and decided to run to Target for a few things.I had hoped to be in and out quickly.I found a line with just one person ahead of me and began organizing my items on the conveyor. After placing my items,I looked up to see that the person ahead of me was an elderly woman. She was paying for her items with change and wanted to purchase each separately.I was frustrated with this woman and the inconvenience she had placed on me.But then I watched the young employee with this woman.I watched him help her count her change, ever so softly taking it from her shaking hands. When she asked if she had enough to buy a reusable bag,he told her she did and went two lines over to get one for her and then repackaged her items.Never once was this employee angry. He was nothing but patient and kind.As I was watching him,I saw that Eloise was too.She was standing next to the woman, watching the employee count the change.I realized I hadn’t been inconvenienced at all. That my daughterwas instead witnessing kindness and patience and being taught this valuable lesson by a complete stranger. When the woman was finished, the employee began ringing up my items and thanked me for my patience.I then thanked him for teaching us patience and kindness by his treatment of that elderly woman. When he was finished I pushed my cart through the store trying to find the manager.I wanted her to know of the employee’s kindness and patience and how much it meant to me.After tracking her down and sharing the story with her,we left Target with a cart full of consumable items, but what is more,a heart full of gratitude for such an invaluable lesson. If you are ever in the Glendale Target, give Ishmael a smile and a nod.The world could use more people like him.答案One day,the author with two children went to Target for shopping.(要点2)While waiting in line, she found an old lady was troublesome, but the young employee treated her patiently.(要点3)Seeing that, the author was touched by his kindness and patience and she thought her children would learn a lot from this experience.(要点4)练习7On a damp,boring,stay-in-the-house kind of day,I was a4-year-old artist armed with a new treasure:my own big box of crayons(蜡笔).Somehow, the usual paper wasn’t special enough for these64perfect,sweet-smelling sticks of vivid color.I looked around for a bigger canvas(画布). If only there were hidden walls.Walls like the ones in Mom and Dad’s closet.Slipping quietly down the hall to the bedroom,I stood on tiptoe to reach the string for the closet light.Words and images filled my mind faster than my hands could make them.A brilliant rainbow was seen on one wall, with a cheery golden sun peeking out from above. Below,a giant shade tree supported a swing for stick-figure children.Around them, flowers bloomed everywhere. My masterpiece! All my very own magic!I took in the walls, the colors and the brightness. Joy swelled inside me.But as my creativity wound down,a thought popped up:I’ve got to show Mom!Suddenly I was still.Mom called out,“Dinner’s ready.”After a short time, her footsteps approached, and then finally, the closet door opened.I stood nervously in the corner.Mom breathed in sharply, then stood frozen.Only her eyes moved as she slowly looked over my masterpiece. She was quiet for a long, long time.I didn’t dare breathe. Finally, she turned to me.“I like it,”she said.“No,I love it!I feel like I have a new closet!”Now,45years later,my childhood artwork is still there. And in my own house, the closet walls are masterpieces, too, created by my own daughters when they were little girls.Every time I open a closet door,I remember that,as big as that box of crayons and white walls seemed when I was little,my mother’s love was the biggest thing of all.【范文1】One day when I was little,I created a beautiful picture on the walls in parents’closet.Although satisfied with it,I couldn’t imagine mom’s reaction.Instead of criticizing me for ruining the closet, mom thought highly of my artwork. Now I understand how much she loves me and I do the same to my children to develop their creativity.A great many people are often willing to sacrifice higher to pay for the privilege of becoming white collar workers. This can give rise to curious situations,as it did in the case of Alfred Bloggs who worked as a dustman for the Ellesmere Corporation. When he got married,Alf was too embarrassed to say anything to his wife about his job.He simply told her that he worked for the Corporation.Every morning,he left home dressed in a smart black suit.He then changed into overalls(n.工作服)and spent the next eight hours as a dustman. Before returning home at night,he took a shower and changed back into his suit.Alf did this for over two years and his fellow dustmen kept his secret.Alf's wife has never discovered that she married a dustman and she never will, for Alf has just found another job.He will soon be working in an office as a junior clerk. He will be earning only half as much as he used to,but he feels that his rise in status is well worth the loss of money. From now on,he will wear a suit all day and others will call him'Mr.Bloggs',not'Alf'.答案Many people prefer to give up higher pay to become white collar workers, which may cause some curious situation like the dustman,Alfred Bloggs. When he got married,he lied to his wife saying he worked for a Corporation. He dressed in a suit every morning, and changed into overalls at work.At night he changed back into suit before going home.He won't be found out because he will be an office worker in future.

例(二)例(三)练习实战练习(一)One hot night last August, I tried everything I could think of—a warm bottle, songs, etc. to make him fall into sleep, but he just couldn’t do it. Since I believed that a long night was waiting for me ahead, I had no choice but to bring a TV into his room to kill off the hours until dawn. I was surprised that the moment I turned on the TV, the baby became quiet right away and fixed his little eyes brightly on the screen. Not willing to waste an opportunity for sleep, I then tiptoed(用脚失走)out of the room, leaving him to watch the boring TV programs.I he ard no more of the baby’s crying that night and the next morning when I went into his room, I found him still watching TV by himself. I found there was a metaphor (暗喻) in my baby’s behavior for the new generation. When I gave my boy some books to go over, he only spit upon them; when I read to him, he did not feel comfortable. So is it in the schools with my students. I find that our students don’t read and they look down upon reading and make light of those of us who teach it. All they want to do is to watch TV. After this experience with the baby, however, I have drawn a conclusion: “Let them watch it!” If television is much more attractive to children than books, why should we fight against it? Let them watch what they want!实战练习(二)More and more people like bicycling and it is no surprise. It is fun, healthy and good for the environment. Maybe that’s why there are 1.4 billion bicycles and only 400 million cars on roadsworldwide today.Bikes can take you almost anywhere, and there is no oil cost! Get on a bicycle and ride around your neighbourhood. You may discover something new all around you. Stopping and getting off a bike is easier than stopping and getting out of your car. You can bike to work and benefit from the enjoyable exercise witho ut polluting the environment. You don’t even have to ride all the way.Folding bikes work well for people who take the train. Just fold the bike and take it with you. You can do the same on an airplane. A folding bike can be packed in a suitcase. You can also take a common bike with you when you fly. But be sure to look for information by getting on airline websites. Not all airlines are bicycle-friendly to travelers.Health Benefits of Bicycling: It helps to prevent heart diseases. Bicycling helps to control your weight. A 15-minute bike ride to and from work three times a week bums off five kilos of fat in a year. Bicycling can improve your mood. Exercise like bicycling has been shown to make people feel better, more relaxed and self-confident. Bicycling is healthier than driving.实战练习(三)Understanding body language is important to success, whether in the business world or in our personal lives. However, some of our ideas about body language are wrong, according to modern communication research. There is a belief that people with shifty(变化的) eyes are probably lying. As Paul Ekman says, “When we asked people how they could tell if someone was lying, too much blinking(眨眼) and shifty eyes were the answers.” Ekman goes on to argue against such a wrong belief. Although this kind of body language is probably an expression of nervousness, it is not always because the person is lying. Shyness can, for example, make people shift their eyes. To understand what someone’s behavior means, you have to watch them carefully. There is also a belief that when meeting someone, the more eye contact, the better. As a result people would like to make initial (开始的) contact in formal situations, like a job interview, by staring fixedly at the other human. Yet Ekman points out that most of us are comfortable with eye contact lasting a few seconds, but any eye contact that is longer than that cm make us nervous. In short, you must carefully consider the speaker and the speaking environment. Experts suggest that unless you know about someone’s basic communication style, you will have little hope in understanding their true feelings through body language. In other words, body language carries important but not always true messages.实战练习(四)Linda Evans was my best friend—like the sister I never had. We did everything together: having piano lessons, going to movies, swimming, and horseback riding. When I was 13, my family moved away. Linda and I kept in touch through letters, and we saw each other on special time—like my wedd ing and Linda’s. Soon we were busy with children and moving to new homes, and we wrote less often. One day a card that I sent came back, stamped “Address Unknown.” I had no idea how to find Linda.Over the years, I missed Linda very much. I wanted to share happiness of my children and then grandchildren. And I needed to share my sadness when my brother and then mother died. There was an empty place in my heart that only a friend like Linda could fill. One day I was reading a newspaper when I noticed a photo of a young woman who looked very much like Linda and whose last name was Wagman —Linda's married name. “There must be thousands of Wagmans,” I thought, but I still wrote to her.She called as soon as she got my letter. “Mrs. Tobin!’’ she said excitedly, “Linda Evans Wagman is my mother.Minutes later I heard a voice that I knew very much, even after 40 years, laughed and cried and caught up on each other’s lives. Now the empty place in my heart is filled. And there’s one thing that Linda and I know for su re: We won’t lose each other again!实战练习(五)As is known to all, sports stars earn large amounts of money every year. LeBron James, the famous American basketball star, for instance, earns an income of more than 20 million dollars a year. Some people hold the view that these stars do not deserve the high pay that they are getting. Some even argue that sports stars do nothing to society apart from entertaining people. Their contributions to society are much less than those made by doctors, firemen, scientists, professors, etc. But I can never agree with that. While sports are for entertainment, it does not mean that they are not important to people's life. Why do so many people go to see football matches and NBA games? It is because they enjoy the games, and they are willing to pay to watch the performances. Because of the sports stars, our life becomes more exciting. Some sports stars gain honor for their country, and their countrymen are proud of them. They contribute to the spiritual well-being of their people. What's more, sports stars usually are at the top level in their fields. In this world, you have to pay if you want the best. It is the same with sports. Skills in sports are like the skills in works of art. People will not say that Da Vinci's painting Mona Lisa was bought for too much money. Most stars are skilled in their own field not only because of their talents but also because of their hard training. They have to keep performing at their peak to earn that good income.Their influence on the national economy can not be overlooked. Take NBA in America for example, the stars help to support not only the basketball industry, but also other related industries like sportswear and sports equipment. Sports stars also make constant appearances inadvertisements. Since they are well-known in the world, they attract many people's attention, which often leads to an immediate boom in the sales of the products that are advertised by them.I hope one day their accomplishments will be fully recognized.实战练习(六)How do you feel about silence and pauses in conversations? Do they make you anxious or uneasy? Or do you enjoy silence in the presence of others sometimes? Whatever your answer is, we can sometimes run into such a situation where the listener remains silent. There can be silence in conversations. But the meaning of silence varies among cultural groups. Some cultural groups may think that it is extremely uncomfortable; therefore, attempts may be made to fill every gap with conversation. Persons in other cultural groups value silence and view it as necessary for understanding a person's needs. Many traditional Asians think that it is a basic part of communicating among people. Therefore, when a person from one of these cultures is speaking and suddenly stops, what may be implied is that the person wants the listener to consider what has been said before continuing. In these cultures, silence is a call for reflection.Other cultures may use silence in other ways, particularly when dealing with conflicts among people or in relationships of people with different amounts of power. For example, Russian, French, and Spanish persons may use silence to show agreement between parties about the topic under discussion. Similarly, Mexicans may use silence when instructions are given by a person in authority rather than be rude to that person by arguing with him or her.Nurses and other care-givers need to be aware of the possible meanings of silence when they come across the personal anxiety their patients may be experiencing. Nurses should recognize their own personal and cultural construction of silence so that a patient's silence is not interruptedtoo early or allowed to go on unnecessarily. A nurse who understands the healing (有治疗功效的) value of silence can use this understanding to assist in the care of patients from their own and from other cultures as well.实战练习(七)When a student cuts class, fails to prepare for class or do homework, or is unable to answer even simple questions about the topic being studied in class, it is clear that the student is not learning well, and teachers may wonder why. One of the causes might be language anxiety. Language anxiety is a fear occurring when a learner is expected to perform in the foreign language. That is, when a student is asked to perform in the target language in class, he is likely to become nervous and fail to do it.The good news is that so far some research has suggested language anxiety can make students focused, get good grades and build up high self-confidence. Despite these benefits, most research has also shown a negative relationship between language anxiety and performance. The negative kind of anxiety harms learners' performance in many ways. As time goes by, they will doubt themselves, refuse to join in discussions and try to avoid using the language.Teachers and researchers might sometimes be able to judge language anxiety through measuring scales There are a number of scales, the best known of which is called the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale or FLCAS. The FLCAS was developed to measure the specific anxiety reaction of a student to a foreign language situation. However, this is not recommended because researchers consider that language anxiety is observable in class. To help students to deal more effectively with language anxiety, teachers are advised to allow students to perform differently according to their own abilities. More importantly, teachers ought to provide various opportunities for classroom success in the language. In this way, students canbe freed from the pain of severe language anxiety. Gradually they will become more and more confident of their language abilities and eventually experience what it means to succeed in the language classroom.例(一)SummaryMike, whose job is exciting and dangerous, works for MFS. Mike and other MFS’s doctors need to be ready to go almost anywhere in the world and might be sent on an emergency task. Miket thinks his job is meaningful/helpful and he gains a lot. (同义词转换)例(二)SummaryPeople from countryside generally live longer than city people because they enjoy many advantages such as close with nature, physical work, being free from urban pressure, more free walk, quiet and peaceful environment, fresh food, etc. (句式改变)例(三)SummaryWindbreak, which is formed by trees and other plants, is used by farmers to protect their land from damage by farming and the forces of the nature. Windbreak can protect the crops and help improve grain production. However, windbreak should be planted properly to work its best.实战练习(一)SummaryThe writer tried everything to make her baby fall asleep but failed. Surprisingly, when she turned on the TV, the baby kept quiet himself. Then she found that her students liked watching TV as much as her baby. So the writer suggested that we should let children watch what they want.实战练习(二)SummaryMany people like bicycling because it’s fun, hea lthy and good for environment and it’s easy to stop and get off. Sometimes folding bikes can be taken with you on an airplane or a train. Most importantly, bicycling has a lot of health benefits.实战练习(三)SummaryThe passage argues two wrong ideas about body language. One is that people believe shifty eyes means that person is lying. The other is that people believe the more eye contact, the better during communication. Finally, the writer gives us a suggestion that we should be careful when we judge somebody body language.实战练习(四)Summary:Linda Evans and the writer are best friends. After the writer’s family moved away, they kept in touch through letters. Then, they were all busy and wrote letters often. Finally, they lost in touch with each other and the writer felt empty. After 40 years, the writer found Linda and they won’t lose each other again.实战练习(五)SummaryDifferent from some people's views, the writer believes sports stars' pay is not too high but reasonable. (要点1) First, sports stars' performances bring people excitement and spiritual well-being. (要点2) Besides, they are the best in their field thanks to their talents and hard training. (要点3) Lastly, sports stars like those in NBAcontribute to the national economy by benefiting basketball industry, advertising industry as well as other related industries. (要点4)实战练习(六)SummarySilence can occur in conversations. (要点1) However, it is interpreted differently by different cultures, some thinking it unnatural while others considering it indispensible. (要点2) For example, many traditional Asians value it as a call for reflection and such nationalities as Russians and Mexicans avoid conflicts by keeping silent. (要点3) Therefore, care-givers like nurses should understand the healing effects of silence to offer better care. (要点4)实战练习(七)SummaryWhen using a foreign language in class, learners may experience language anxiety. (要点1) Research has shown it does more harm to learners in many aspects in spite of its benefits. (要点2) To its credit, language anxiety can be observed without the use of scales/FLCAS. (要点3) Therefore, teachers should welcome different performances and attach more importance to offering chances for students to feel success.

⏹ A father came home from work late, tired and exhausted. He worked day
and night, hoping to earn more money for his only child. His 5-year-old daughter was waiting for him at the door.
⏹“Dad, how much do you earn an hour?”asked the daughter.
⏹“Why do you ask that?”
⏹“I just want to know. Please tell me how much you earn an hour.”
⏹“If you really want to know ... I earn $20 an hour.”
⏹“Oh,” the little girl replied with her head down. Looking up, she said, “Dad,
may I borrow $10?”
⏹The father became angry. “Go to bed right now! Think about how selfish
you are. I work hard every day, but you just want to buy your silly toy!”
⏹The little girl quietly went to her bedroom, feeling sad. After an hour or so,
the father calmed down and started to feel sorry because she really didn’t ask for money very often. So he went to his daughter’s room and gave her $10.
⏹The little girl jumped from the bed. “Oh, thank you, Dad!”She was really
happy indeed.
⏹Then she took out her own savings and said,“Dad, I have $20 now. Can I buy an
hour of your time? Please come home earlier tomorrow. I would like to have dinner with you.”

I put on my raincoat and ran to the bus stop in a hurry, for I thought a lot of people might be waiting there. Hardly had I got there when a bus was coming. I got on the bus immediately, hoping it was possible for me to take a seat. I saw an empty seat and took
it. But I found an old lady standing behind me. I stood up at once and was about to ask her to take the seat when a young girl in a modern skirt made a dive for it. I could hardly bel ieve it. I glared at her, thinking, “What bad manners!” She cares for nobody but herself. Won’t she grow old in the future?”

I was studying in high school when my brother left home for the first time to go to a residential college. He was excited about going to a new town, a new college, and above all, being on his own. Nobody would tell him about wake-up time. I was fascinated with the rewards and privileges that high school graduation brought to people.
About two weeks after my brother left home, his tear-stained(泪痕) letter arrived telling how much he missed all of us. It was evident that he cried writing this letter and thinking about the things he missed which hadn’t been a big deal to him just two weeks earlier.
I learned that the first year of college did not just involve going away to college, it was also about leaving home. Now, as a psychologist, I know that leaving home for college is one of the first major steps in separating from the family and becoming independent.
