Where can I apply for one? W: Go to the office at the end of the hall.(Text 3)W: Why will Mr. Rogers be out of the office next week? To take a holiday or go on business?M: Neither. He’s traveling to see his niece. She’s getting married next Thursday.(Text 4)W: May I leave the office early today? Can’t you ask someone else to go to the airport?(Text 5)M: Did you hear about Rosa’s sister? She was trapped inside a lift last week.W: Is she all right?M: Yes. The workers managed to open the door in the end.W: That’s great to hear.(Text 6)W: Did you see the France-Wales match on TV last night? Exciting! Wales won! Everyone was over the moon!M: Yeah, I was too. I watched it with my dad. Why did Gareth Jones quit halfway though--- did the referee decide he was in the wrong?W: No, he did something to his ankle though, didn’t he? I don’t think it’s serious though. I think the writer has won awards for his earlier work.M: Yeah, and it’s not bad at all, although there are one or two bits that didn’t work, which I got rather angry by. For me, what stood out were the people playing the two leading roles. They were excellent. But I found the songs unimpressive for the most part.W: Well, it sounds as if I should go and see it sometime, anyway.(Text 8)M: You moved to a new place last month, didn’t you?W: Yeah. It was a pity I had to leave that flat because in many ways I liked being there. It was warm, even during the coldest nights of January, and the owner was fair, charging me a reasonable rent and immediately getting things fixed whenever anything went wrong.M: That was good.W: Yeah, but he couldn’t do anything about the couple next door, who seemed to spend nearly all their time having arguments. I tried turning up the TV but I could still hear them, and when I saw the woman in the hall one morning and mentioned it to her, she got angry. So, sadly, I had to pack my bags and find somewhere else.(Text 9)M: Lily, what did you do when you decided to walk through the Andes Mountains to Machu Picchu? Was there anywhere you could get used to being so high up?W: Well, the walk takes me to above 4,000 meters, but of course there’s nothing like that in this country. The highest mountain here is only 2,000 meters, so I cou ldn’t. I thought of spending some nights out in the tent during some particularly bad winter weather here, but decided that might put me off going at all. So I got into the habit of doing around fifteen kilometers on foot through the hills near here each evening.M: So how did the walking go?W: It was wonderful. A fantastic experience! Even though sometimes it was very hard going and naturally there were a few problems along the way.M: And what, looking back over the whole journey, would you say was the most exciting moment? W: There were several magical experiences, such as when we walked through the Sun Gate at theentrance to Machu Picchu itself, seeing all the ruined buildings and narrow streets. Then, in the evening, after most of the tourists had gone, we saw the most beautiful sunset. That’s the most exciting moment I enjoyed.(Text 10)W: And now on to this month’s best short breaks. There’s nothing like a long weekend in a foreign city to make you feel good and this month we’v e found some great breaks in Paris, Madrid, Rome and Venice with breaks ranging from two nights to seven. You can find more about them on our website. But our favorite short break of the month is three nights in Barcelona. The cost of the Barcelona break pays for your flight and your hotel. It also includes a full continental breakfas t.Evening meals are not included. You can stay at a hotel of your choice and the hotels range from 2-star to 5-star—there are discounts however, if one of the nights you stay is Sunday. This applies to all the hotels. Barcelona is a city for art lovers, but we all know how much sightseeing costs can be, so for a very small extra cost this break also offers a discount card that will give you money off many of the city sights. The card also allows you 10% discount in certain restaurants around the city. This Barcelona break can be enjoyed anytime between the 5th and the 31st of Oc tober, although booking must be made before 30th of September. AMy grandfather came from Hungary and was the only one in his family who settled down in the United States. The rest of his family remained in Europe. When World War I broke out, he seemed to have become another man, downhearted. Such obvious change was not born out of concern for his welfare, but out of fear: if his only son, my uncle, had to go to war, it would be cousin fighting against cousin. One day in 1918, my Uncle Milton received his draft notice. My grandparents were very upset. But my mother, at the age of 10, felt on top of the world about her soldier brother going off to war. Realizing how he was regarded by his little sister and all of her friends, my uncle bought them all service pins, which meant that they had a loved one in the service. All the little girls were delighted. The moment came when my uncle and the other soldiers, without any training but all in uniforms, boarded the train. The band played and the crowd cheered. Although no one noticed, I’m sure my grandmother had a tear in her eye for the only son. The train slowly pulled out, but not about a thousand yards when it suddenly paused.Everyone stared in wonder as the train slowly returned to the station. There was a dead silence before the doors opened and the men started to step out. Someone shouted, “The war is over!” For a moment, nobody moved, but then the people heard someone bark orders at the soldiers. The men lined up in two lines, walked down the steps, and with the band playing, marched down the street, as returning heroes, to be welcomed home. My mother said it was a great day, but she was just a little disappointed that it didn’t last a tiny bi t longer.1. What the grandfather was most worried about was .A. the spread of the world warB. the safety of his two cousinsC. a drop in his living standardsD. his relatives killing each other2. The underlined phrase “draft notice” means________.A. order for army serviceB. train ticket for EuropeC. letter of rejectionD. note of warning3. What did the “service pins”(in Para.2) stand for in the eyes of the little girls?A. StrengthB. CourageC. VictoryD. Honor4. Which of the following words can best describe the ending of the story?A. DisappointingB. UnexpectedC. UncertainD. InspiringBThere is a 1930s-old restaurant in my hometown that has done little to update itself over the past 80 years. This is part of its charm, as is the wooden phone booth that sits neglected in the age of the cellphone.Ah, the phone booth. We need it now more than ever. For me it symbolizes that phone calls were once private affairs, even if the information being shared was not sensitive in any way. It was simply assumed that a phone conversation was meant for two people, and two people only. In public places this meant turning to the phone booth—a private chamber where one could converse in peace without being overheard.Even at home, phone calls used to be regarded as private. Growing up in the 1960s, we had one phone in the house—fixed to the kitchen wall.As a kid, I didn't get or make many calls. I do, however, remember answering the phone, asking for the identity of the caller, and then handing the phone to my mom. She'd take it, say “Hello, Mrs. Flaubert,” and then, “one moment please,” as she placed her hand over the receiver, turned to me, and directed, “This is for me. Why don't you go outside and play?”Flash forward to what cellphones have done to the past. Within the space of very few years, private conversations have become public declaration, and being overheard seems to be the point. A large part of the problem, of course, is that we now carry our phones with us, and the reflex(反射) to answer the device as soon as it rings is a response Pavlov would have appreciated. But the information is revealed! Not long ago I was sitting in Boston's South Station, waiting for my train. After purchasing a sandwich, I sat down at a table near a man who was on his cellphone.Let me paraphrase what the man had to say:“Yes, that's right. The red and yellow roses. That will be a Visa.” Then he proceeded to recite his card number and expiration date before signing off.I stared unbelievably at the fellow. He glanced at me and asked,“What?”My response was immediate: I recited his card number back to him, along with the expiration date. There is no more privacy, no longer a sense of personal borders or limits and the cellphone has become a loudspeaker. To return to phone booths: Why did they disappear? And should you think a phone booth has no value today, I saw one on eBay going for $4,750.5. Why do private conversations turn into public declaration according to the passage?A. Phone booths have died out in modern life.B. People lack a sense of personal borders or limits.C. The content of phone calls is not that sensitive.D. It is convenient for people to reach for cellphones.6. By describing what happened in Boston's South Station, the author indicates that ________.A. it's ridiculous to answer cellphones in public placesB. it's impolite to overhear others answering cellphonesC. it's necessary to keep a safe distance from others when answering phonesD. it's inappropriate to touch on personal information in cellphone conversations7. What can we conclude from the passage?A. Pavlov is in favor of answering cellphones instantly.B. Something seemingly old-fashioned holds its charm today.C. Phone booths are very popular with consumers on the Internet.D. People used to lack a sense of trust and security in the 1960s.CThere are an extremely large number of ants worldwide. Each individual ant hardly weighs anything, but put together they weigh roughly the same as all of mankind. They also live nearly everywhere, except on frozen mountain tops and around the poles. For animals of their size, ants have been astonishingly successful, largely due to their wonderful behavior. In colonies (群体) that range in size from a few hundred to tens of millions, they organize their lives with a clear division of labor, ants depend primarily on pheromones , chemicals sent out by individuals and smelled or tasted by fellow members of their colony. When an ant finds food, it produces a pheromone that will lead others straight to where the food is. When an individual ant comes under attack or is dying, it sends out an pheromone to warn the colony to prepare for a conflict as a defense unit.In fact, when it comes to the art of war, ants have no equal. They are completely fearless and will readily take on a creature much larger than themselves, attacking in large groups and overcoming their target. Such is their devotion to the common good of the colony that not only soldier ants but also worker ants will sacrificetheir lives to help defeat an enemy.Behavior in this selfless and devoted manner, these little creatures have survived on Earth for more than 140 million years, far longer than dinosaurs. Because they think as one, they have a collective intelligence greater than you would expect from its individual parts.8.We can learn from the passage that ants are _______.A.not willing to share foodB.not found around the polesC.more successful than all other animalsD.too many to achieve any level of organization9.Ants can use pheromones for ______.A. escapeB. communicationC. warning enemiesD. arranging labor10.What does the underlined expression “take on” in Paragraph 3 mean?A.AcceptB. EmployC. Play withD. Fight against11.Which of the following contributes most to the survival of ants?A.Their behaviorB. Their sizeC. Their numberD. Their weightDOne day in 1995, a large, heavy middle-aged man robbed two Pittsburgh banks in broad daylight. He didn't wear a mask and he smiled at surveillance cameras before walking out of each bank. Later that night, police arrested a surprised McArthur Wheeler. When they showed him the surveillance tapes, Wheeler stared in disbelief. “But I wore the juice,” he said. Apparently, Wheeler thought that rubbing lemon juice on his skin would make him invisible to videotape cameras. After all, lemon juice is used as invisible ink, so, as long as he didn't come near a heat source,he should have been completely invisible. The case caught the eye of the psychologist David Dunning at Cornell University, who enlisted his graduate student, Justin Kruger, to see what was going on. They reasoned that, while almost everyone holds favourable views of their abilities in various social and intellectual fields, some people mistakenly assess their abilities as being much higher than they actually are. This “illusion of confidence” is now called the “Dunning-Kruger effect”,and describes the cognitive bias to inflate self-assessment.To investigate this phenomenon in the lab, Dunning and Kruger designed some clever experiments. In one study, they asked undergraduate students a series of questions about grammar, logic and jokes, and then asked each student to estimate his or her score overall, as well as their relative rankings compared to the other students. Interestingly, students who scored the lowest in these cognitive tasks always overestimated how well they did—by a lot. Students who scored in the bottom estimated that they had performed better than two-thirds of the other students!Sure, it's typical for people to overestimate their abilities. The problem is that when people are incompetent, not only do they reach wrong conclusions and make unfortunate choices, but also they are robbed of the ability to realize their mistakes. In a semester-long study of college students, good students could better predict their performance on future exams if given feedback about their scores and rankings. However, the poorest performers showed no recognition, despite clear and repeated feedback that they were doing badly. Instead of being confused or thoughtful about their incorrect ways, incompetent people insist that their ways are correct. As Charles Darwin wrote in The Descent of Man(1871): “Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge.”Interestingly, really smart people also fail to accurately self-assess their abilities. As much as D- and F-grade students overestimate their abilities, A-grade students underestimate theirs. The difference is that competent people can and do adjust their self-assessment if given appropriate feedback, while incompetent individuals cannot.12.Which of the following statements about the Dunning-Kruger effect is TRUE?A. The effect is true for everyone in daily life.B. It suggests that most people lack cognitive abilities.C. Some people are overconfident about their abilities.D. The conclusion is drawn based on a series of bank robberies.13. What do the college students' behaviors mentioned in the experiments prove?A. Feedback plays a significant role in estimating one's ability.B. Incompetent people have a rather fixed attitude towards their choice.C. Good students always predict their future performance accurately.D. People can't rely on their previous behavior to make adjustments.14. The underlined word “begets” in Paragraph 4 can be replaced by “________”.A. gives rise toB. takes advantage ofC. makes up forD. breaks away from15. What can we infer from the passage?A. Real knowledge is knowing the extent of one's ignorance.B. It is impossible for people to evaluate their real competence.C. Illusion of confidence is the major source of people's failure.D. Those with great abilities often have a low opinion of themselves.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余项。

Have you ever caught yourself saying, "I hate small talk!" the minute you walk into a party? If so, you might be an introvert (内向的人). Introverts hate to chat about "small" subjects with people. They are fine when you talk one on one but seem to get lost in the crowd when there's a group around.

A.Surprised.B.Disappointed.C.Annoyed.
Small talk serves as a gateway toward deeper conversation. Some introverts don’t realize that small talk will actually help them get to the bigger topics. You don't need to stay on small talk forever. However, sometimes introverts feel that even the short amount of time it takes to get into the real conversation is a waste of time. Small talk is very fast. Someone says something and this should be followed up with a quick response. But introverts like to chew on their words before saying them aloud. Before they answer, they’llmull overdifferent thoughts.
