The first time I saw Carlos, I had my arms full of books and I was tearing into the classroom when I ran into something solid. It was Carlos.
“My, you’re tall,” he exclaimed.
Of course, the class began to laugh. Annoyed, I walked to my seat without a word.
I glanced back to see if Reed Harrington was laughing with the rest. That would be last straw. To my relief, Reed was studying and did not seem to be aware of it. I didn’t know why I considered Reed my friend. Maybe just because he was a good two inches taller than I.
“Take that seat,” Mr. McCarthy told the newcomer, pointing to the only empty one, in the back of the room.
Carlos smiled broadly. “But I need a couple of dictionaries.” Again the class laughed, but now they were laughing with Carlos, not at him. He had been here only 10 minutes and already he had them on his side.
It was the school election that made me think of Carlos again. Reed Harrington was voted president and Carlos vice-president. “How come?” I kept asking myself. “How come this shrimp(虾) who’s only been in town for a little over a month gets to be so popular?”
So when I met Carlos this morning, I said to him. “It doesn’t seem to bother you being short, I mean.” He looked up at me. “Of course I mind being short. But there isn’t anything I can do about it. When I realized I was going to have to spend my life in this undersized skin, I decided to make the best of it. My motto is-don’t be afraid to be yourself.”

Where do you want to travel this year? What are some of your favorite vacation spots? See some places we have picked as the top destinations for 2010.
●Sri Lanka
The island feels like one big tropical zoo: elephants roam freely, water buffaloes(水牛) idle in paddy fields and monkeys swing from trees. And then there’s the beautiful coastline. Among the most scenic is Nilaveli Beach in the Tamil north. Vacationers can lie on poolside hammocks(吊床) under palm trees or swim in its crystal-clear waters. Or they can order cocktails at the Nilaveli Beach Hotel.
●Shanghai
Following up on Beijing’s successful Olympics, Shanghai is expecting 70 million visitors to its World Expo. From May 1 to Oct. 31, more than 200 nations and regions will turn a two-square-mile site by the city’s Huangpu River into an architectural playground: Switzerland will be represented by a building shaped like a map of that country, while England is in the celebrated hands of the designer Thomas Heatherwick. However, by contrast, the United States pavilion might be mistaken for a suburban(郊区的) office park.
●Copenhagen
Last year, thousands of environmentalists challenged world leaders in Copenhagen for the climate summit, but the Danish capital has already emerged as one of the world’s greenest, and maybe coolest, cities. In Copenhagen, long, flat roads all have bicycle paths where locals cycle around the city. Away from all the modernism and the happy cyclists, cultural thrill-seekers are being attracted to the district of Norrebro, where the city’s young crowd the cafes and galleries or dance in local clubs until the early hours.

Across the United States there are several places where two independent towns grew together to become one city—but kept both their names.
Winston-Salem is one of them. It’s a mid-sized city in what’s called the plateau(high land), between the Atlantic Coast and the inland mountains in the state of North Carolina. The Winston part is a relatively new place, founded early last century. It’s home to the nation’s biggest open-air tobacco market.
The giant R.J.Reynolds Tobacco Company’s headquarters is in Winston-Salem and Winston is the name of one of Reynolds’ best-known cigarette brands. Fast-growing Winston soon surrounded the much older town of Salem, so in 1913, people in the area voted to combine them into a single place.
From historical and tourist point of view, Salem, or Old Salem, as it’s called today, is the interesting and unusual part of town.
Salem was founded in the 1700s by the Moravians. They spoke German, and their community was religiously based, with single men and single women living apart in separate dormitories. The Moravians greatly valued women’s work and brainpower. In fact, one of the nation’s oldest boarding schools for young women-the Moravians’Salem Academy founded in 1772-is still in operation.
Over the years, Salem lost its Moravian character. That all changed, though, when a nonprofit group began to rehabilitate the historic area. These days Old Salem is what’s called a living history museum, with exhibits, music, and tours of 18th -century houses, taverns and Moravian dormitory buildings just seven blocks from the tallest skyscraper in Winston-Salem.
The historic community is booming again. Just as R.J.Reynolds is taking in millions of dollars making cigarettes across town, Old Salem is generating about $15 million a year in tourism revenue and donations.
64. From the passage we can know that ______________.
A. Winston-Salem is the name of a city

D. the combination meets the wishes of the people
66. The city Salem is special for its ______________.
A. boarding school
B. lifestyle and tradition
C. respect for brainpower
D. religious belief
67. The underlined word “rehabilitate” in Paragraph 6 is closest in meaning to “________________”.
A. reconstruct

C. enlarge
D. decorate

As they migrate (迁徙), butterflies and moths choose the winds they want to fly with, and they change their body positions if they start floating in the wrong direction. This new finding suggests that insects may employ some of the same methods that birds use for traveling long distances. Scientists have long thought that insects were simply at the mercy of the wind.
Fascinating as their skills of flight are, migrating behavior has been difficult to study in insects because many long distant trips happen thousands of feet above ground. Only recently have scientists developed technologies that can detect such little creatures at such great heights.
To their surprise, though, the insects weren’t passive travelers in the winds. In autumn, for example, most light winds blew from the east, but the insects somehow sought out ones that carried them south and they positioned themselves to navigate directly to their wintering homes.
Even in the spring, when most winds flowed northward, the insects didn’t always go with the flow. If breezes weren’t blowing in the exact direction they wanted to go, the insects changed their body positions to compensate. Many migrating birds do the same thing.
The study also found, butterflies and moths actively flew within the air streams that pushed them along. By adding flight speeds to wind speeds, the scientists calculated that butterflies and moths can ravel as fast as 100 kilometers an hour. The findings may have real-world applications. With climate warming, migrating insects are growing in number. Knowing how and when these pests move could help farmers decide when to spray their crops.
68. What’s the main idea of the text?
A. Insects migrate with the seasons.
B. The wind helps insects greatly in migrating.
C. Windsurfing insects have real direction.
D. Scientists have trouble in observing insects.
69. Scientists originally thought that _____________.
A. insects always waited for their favorable winds
B. insects chose the winds they wanted to ride
C. insects were just blown about by the wind
D. insects positioned themselves in the winds
70. It is not easy to study the migrating behavior of the insects because _____________.
A. the little creatures can fly very fast
B. they have no regular migrating courses
C. the wind’s direction is hard to foresee
D. their flight is long and high above ground
71. We can learn form the text that _______________.
A. insects fly in the way birds do
B. insects travel more easily in autumn
C. insects never position themselves when flying low
D. insects rest a lot when the wind pushes them along
E
Are you happy? Do you remember a time when you were happy? Are you seeking happiness today?
Many have sought a variety of sources for their feelings of happiness. Some have put their hearts and efforts into their work. Too many have turned to drugs and alcohol. Meanwhile, untold numbers have looked for it in the possession of expensive cars, exotic(异国的) vacation homes and other popular “toys”. Most of their efforts have a root in one common fact: people are looking for a lasting source of happiness.
Unfortunately, I believe that happiness escapes from many people because they misunderstand the journey of finding it. I have heard many people say that, “I’ll be happy when I get my new promotion.” Or “I’ll be happy when I lose that extra 20 pounds.” It is dangerous because it accepts that happiness is a “response” to having, being or doing something.
In life, we all experience stimulus(激励) and response. Today, some people think that an expensive car is a
stimulus, and happiness is a response; a great paying job is a stimulus, and happiness is a response; a loving relationship is a stimulus, and happiness is a response. This belief leaves us the thinking and feeling: I’ll be happy when …
It has been my finding that actually the opposite is true. I believe that happiness is a stimulus and a response is what life brings to those who are truly happy. When we are happy, we tend to have more success in our work. When we are happy, people want to be around us and enjoy loving relationships. When we are happy, we more naturally take better care of our bodies and enjoy good health. Happiness is not a response but a stimulus.
Happiness is a conscious choice we make every day of our lives. For unknown reason to me, many choose to be painful, unsuccessful and angry most of the time. Happiness is not something that happens to us after we get something we want-we usually get things we want AFTER we choose to be happy.
72. From the second paragraph, we know too many people ______________.
A. are not happy when they work hard
B. are not happy when they drink or take drugs
C. Are happy when they possess their own expensive cars
D. all desire exotic vacation homes
73. Generally speaking, most people feel happy because ______________.
A. they think happiness is rooted in their deep hearts
B. they get what they want to have
C. they get a great paying job
D. they get an expensive car
74. Which of the following is right according to the author?
A. If you want to get what you want, you first choose to be happy.
B. We should try to get more and then we’ll be happy.
C. Most people today are happy.
D. Work is a necessary part in our daily life
75. From the viewpoint of the author, happiness is _______________.
A. based on our needs
B. unconditional
C. out of reach
D. limited

In a memory-based competition between you and a chimp(猩猩); who do you think would win? If you put yourself on top, you might want to guess again.
In a test that challenged participants to remember numbers, a young chimp performed better than Japanese college students.
Here’s how the test worked. At Kyoto University in Japan, human students and chimpanzee participants sat in front of a computer. Five numbers, ranging from 1 to 9, were combined with one another and then, they appeared at random places on the screen.
The numbers stayed on the screen for less than a second. In the first test, for example, participants saw the numbers for 650 milliseconds(about two-thirds of a second).
Then, each number disappeared and they saw a white square instead. Participants had to touch the squares in numerical order, based on the numbers that had been there a moment before. In this test, the students touched the boxes in the correct order about 80 percent of the time. A young chimp named Ayumu performed equally well.
During a harder test, participants were only able to see the numbers for 210 milliseconds.
This time, students only succeeded in putting the boxes in the correct order about 40 percent of the time. But Ayumu still could select the boxes in the fight order nearly 80 percent of the time.
Some people have what’s called a “photographic memory,” which allows them to remember a surprising number of details after just a quick glimpse of something. Ayumu’s memory might work in a similar way says lead researcher Tetsuro Matsuzawa.
The chim p’s young age might have something to do with his impressive performance, too. In previous tests, the Japanese researchers found that young chimps performed better than their mothers.
The scientists are interested to see whether Ayumu loses his strong memory as he grows older. They already know that young children sometimes have sharp memories when offered something photographical, but

Being a popular student
We all hope to be popular with our classmates and teachers. To enjoy popularity, we should regard the class as our big family and even offer to sacrifice our personal interest whenever necessary. While taking an active part in all our class activities, we should work responsibly to build up a good reputation as a team. To be a student with high popularity, we are to show respect, concern and sympathy for others. As a result, we never hesitate to lend a hand to those in need.
To be a popular student, we ought to be strict with ourselves in everything we do at school and make every effort to achieve all-round development, being good not only at our lessons but also at sports, music, painting, and social services and so on. In time of success we remain modest, while in time of difficulty we keep strong-minded.
All in all, popularity among classmates and teachers comes naturally to those who keep improving their personal qualities.。
