一、阅读选择More than 25 years ago, Saroo Brierley lived in rural(农村)India. One day, he played with his brother along the rail line and fell asleep. When he woke up and found himself alone, the 4-year-old decided his brother might be on the train he saw in front ofhim-so he got on.That train took him a thousand miles across the country to a totally strange city. He lived on the streets, and then in an orphanage(孤儿院). There, he was adopted by an Australian family and flown to Tasmania. As he writes in his new book, A Long Way Home, Brierley couldn't help but wonder about his hometown back in India. He remembered landmarks, but since he didn't know his town's name, finding a small neighborhood in a vast country proved to be impossible. Then he found a digital mapping program. He spent years searching for his hometown in the program's satellite pictures. In 2011, he came across something familiar. He studied it and realized he was looking at a town's central business district from a bird's-eye view. He thought, “O n the right-hand side you should see the three-platform train station”—and there it was. "And on the left-hand side you should see a big fountain"-and there it was. Everything just started to match. When he stood in front of the house where he grew up as a child, he saw a lady standing in the entrance. "There's something about me, " he thought—and it took him a few seconds but he finally remembered what she used to look like.In an interview Brierley says, "My mother looked so much shorter than I remembered. But she came forth and walked forward, and I walked forward, and my feelings and tears and the chemical in my brain, you know, it was like a nuclear fusion(核聚变). I just didn't knowstanding in front of her. ”1.Why was Brierley separated from his family about 25 years ago?A.He got on a train by mistake.B.He got lost while playing in the street.C.He was taken away by a foreigner.D.He was adopted by an Australian family.2.How did Brierley find his hometown?A.By analyzing old pictures.B.By travelling all around India.C.By studying digital maps.D.By spreading his story via his book.3.What does Brierley mainly talk about in the interview?A.His love for his mother.B.His reunion with his mother.C.His long way back home.D.His memory of his hometown. At the start of the 20th century, an American engineer named John Elfreth Watkins made predictions about life today. His predictions about slowing population growth, mobile phones and increasing height were close to the mark. But he was wrong in one prediction: that everybody would walk 10 miles a day.Today, in Australia, most children on average fall 2, 000 steps short of the physical activity they need to avoid being overweight. In the early 1970s, 40 per cent of children walked to school, while in 2010, it was as low as 15 per cent. The decline is not because we have all become lazy. Families are pressed for time, many with both parents working to pay for their house, often working hours not of their choosing, living in car-dependent neighborhoods with limited public transport. The other side of the coin is equally a deprivation: for health and well-being, as well as lost opportunities(机会)for children to get to know their local surroundings. And for parents there are lost opportunities to walk and talk with their young scholar about their day. Most parents will have eagerly asked their child about their day, only to meet with a “good”, quickly followed b y "I'm hungry". This is also my experience as a mother. Butsomewhere over the daily walk more about my son's day comes out. I hear him making sense of friendship and its limits. This is the unexpected and rare parental opportunity to hear more. Many primary schools support walking school-bus routes(路线), with days of regular, parent-accompanied walks. Doing just one of these a few times a week is better than nothing. It can be tough to begin and takes a little planning-running shoes by the front door, lunches made the night before, umbrellas on rainy days and hats on hot ones-but it's certainly worth trying.4.Why does the author mention Watkins' predictions in the first paragraph?A.To make comparisons. B.To introduce the topic.C.To support her argument. D.To provide examples.5.What has caused the decrease in Australian children's physical activity?A.Plain laziness. B.Health problems.C.Lack of time. D.Security concerns.6.Why does the author find walking with her son worthwhile?A.She can get relaxed after work. B.She can keep physically fit.C.She can help with her son's study. D.She can know her son better.Researchers say they have translated the meaning of gestures that wild chimpanzees (黑猩猩) use to communicate. They say wild chimps communicate 19 specific messages to one another with a "vocabulary" of 66 gestures. The scientists discovered this by following and filming groups of chimps in Uganda, and examining more than 5,000 incidents of these meaningful exchanges.Dr Catherine Hobaiter, who led the research, said that this was the only form of intentional communication to be recorded in the animal kingdom. Only humans and chimps, she said, had a system of communication where they deliberately sent a message to another group member."That's what's so amazing about chimp gestures," she said. "They're the only thing that looks like human language in that respect. ”Although previous research has shown that apes and monkeys can understand complex information from another animal's call, the animals do not appear to use their voices intentionally to communicate messages. This was a significant difference between calls and gestures, Dr Hobaiter said.Chimps will check to see if they have the attention of the animal with which they wish to communicate. In one case, a mother presents her foot to her crying baby, signaling:" Climb on me. " The youngster immediately jumps on to its mothers back and they travel off together. "The big message from this study is that there is another species (物种) out there. that is meaningful in its communication, so that's not unique to humans," said Dr Hobaiter.Dr Susanne Shultz, an evolutionary biologist from the University of Manchester, said the study was praiseworthy in seeking to enrich our knowledge of the evolution of human language. But, she added, the results were "a little disappointing"."The vagueness of the gesture meanings suggests either that the chimps have little to communicate, or we are still missing a lot of the information contained in their gestures and actions," she said. "Moreover, the meanings seem to not go beyond what other animal convey with non-verbal communication. So, it seems the gulf remains. "7.What do chimps and humans have in common according to Dr Hobaiter? A.Memorizing specific words. B.Understanding complex information. C.Using voices to communicate. D.Communicating messages on purpose. 8.What did Dr Shultz think of the study?A.It was well designed but poorly conducted.B.It was a good try but the findings were limited.C.It was inspiring but the evidence was unreliable.D.It was a failure but the methods deserved praise.9.What does the underlined word "gulf" in the last paragraph mean?A.Difference. B.Conflict. C.Balance. D.Connection. 10.Which of the following is the best title for the text?A.Chimpanzee behaviour study achieved a breakthroughB.Chimpanzees developed specific communication skillsC.Chimpanzees: the smartest species in the animal kingdomD.Chimpanzee language: communication gestures translated二、七选五You run into the grocery store to pick up one bottle of water. You get what you need, head to the front, and choose the line that looks fastest.checked out and off to the parking lot. 11.It turns out, it's just math working against you; chances are, the other line really is faster.Grocery stores try to have enough employees at checkout to get all their customers through with minimum delay. 12.Any small interruption - a price check, a chatty customer-can have downstream effects, holding up an entire line.If there are three lines in the store, delays will happen randomly at different registers. Think about the probability:13.So it's not just in your mind: Another line probably is moving faster.Researchers have a good way to deal with this problem. Make all customers stand in one long, snaking line- called a serpentine line - and serve each person at the front with the next available register. 14.This is what they do at most banks and fast-food restaurants. With a serpentine line, a long delay at one register won't unfairly punish the people who lined up behind it. Instead, it will slow down everyone a little bit but speed up checkout overall.15.It takes many registers to keep one line moving quickly, and some stores can't afford the space or manpower. So wherever your next wait may be: Good luck.A.Why does this always seem to happen to you?B.So why don't most places encourage serpentine lines?C.Some of the may have stood in a queue for almost an hour.D.The chances of your line being the fastest are only one in three.E.How high is the probability that you are in the fastest waiting line?F.With three registers, this method is much faster than the traditional approach.G.But sometimes, as on a Sunday afternoon, the system gets particularly busy.三、完形填空Last year I decided to do some volunteer work. First,he constructed a series of clear fiberglass tanks connected to each other. Then he went around to local ponds and streams and brought back some plants and animals. He placed them in the tanks and waited.Little by little, these different kinds of life got used to one another and formed their own ecosystem. After a few weeks,John added the sludge. He was amazed at the results. The plants and animals in the eco-machine took the sludge as food and began to eat it!Within weeks it had all been digested, and all that was left was pure water.Over the years,John has taken on many big jobs.He developed a greenhouse—like facility that treated sewage(污水)from1,600homes in South Burlington. He also designed aneco-machine to clean canal water in Fuzhou,a city in southeast China.“Ecological design”is the name John gives to what he does.“Life on Earth is kind of a box of spare parts for the inventor,”he says.“You put organisms in new relationships and observe what’s happening. Then you let these new systems develop their own ways to self-repair.”4.What can we learn about John from the first two paragraphs?A.He was fond of traveling.B.He enjoyed being alone.C.He had an inquiring mind.D.He longed to be a doctor.5.Why did John put the sludge into the tanks?A.To feed the animals.B.To build an ecosystem.C.To protect the plants.D.To test the eco-machine.6.What is the author’s purpose in mentioning Fuzhou?A.To review John’s research plans.B.To show an application of John’s idea.C.To compare John’s different jobs.D.To erase doubts about John’s invention.7.What is the basis for John’s work?A.Nature can repair itself.anisms need water to survive.C.Life on Earth is diverse.D.Most tiny creatures live in groups.CThe goal of this book is to make the case for digital minimalism, including a detailed exploration of what it asks and why it works, and then to teach you how to adopt this philosophy if you decide it’s right for you.To do so,I divided the book into two parts. In part one,I describe the philosophical foundations of digital minimalism, starting with an examination of the forces that are making so many people’s digital lives increasingly intolerable, before moving on to a detailed discussion of the digital minimalism philosophy.Part one concludes by introducing my suggested method for adopting this philosophy:the digital declutter. This process requires you to step away from optional online activities for thirty days.At the end of the thirty days, you will then add back a small number of carefully chosen online activities that you believe will provide massive benefits to the things you value. In the final chapter of part one,I’ll guide you through carrying out your own digital declutter. In doing so,I’ll draw on an experiment I ran in2018in which over1,600people agreed to perform a digital declutter. You’ll hear these participants’stories and learn what strategies worked well for them, and what traps they encountered that you should avoid. The second part of this book takes a closer look at some ideas that will help you cultivate(培养)a sustainable digital minimalism lifestyle. In these chapters,I examine issues such as the importance of solitude(独处)and the necessity of cultivating high-quality leisure to replace the time most now spend on mindless device use. Each chapter concludes with a collection of practices, which are designed to help you act on the big ideas of the chapter. You can view these practices as a toolbox meant to aid your efforts to build a minimalist lifestyle that words for your particular circumstances.8.What is the book aimed at?A.Teaching critical thinking skills.B.Advocating a simple digital lifestyle.C.Solving philosophical problems.D.Promoting the use of a digital device.9.What does the underlined word“declutter”in paragraph3mean?A.Clear-up.B.Add-on.C.Check-in.D.Take-over.10.What is presented in the final chapter of part one?A.Theoretical models.B.Statistical methods.C.Practical examples.D.Historical analyses.11.What does the author suggest readers do with the practices offered in part two?e them as needed.B.Recommend them to friends.C.Evaluate their effects.D.Identify the ideas behind them.DOn March7,1907,the English statistician Francis Galton published a paper which illustrated what has come to be known as the“wisdom of crowds”effect. The experiment of estimation he conducted showed that in some cases, the average of a large number of independent estimates could be quite accurate. This effect capitalizes on the fact that when people make errors, those errors aren’t always the same. Some people will tend to overestimate, and some to underestimate. When enough of these errors are averaged together, they cancel each other out, resulting in a more accurate estimate. If people are similar and tend to make the same errors, then their errors won’t cancel each other out.In more technical terms, the wisdom of crowds requires that people’s estimates be independent. If for whatever reasons, people’s errors become correlated or dependent, the accuracy of the estimate will go down. But a new study led by Joaquin Navajas offered an interesting twist(转折)on this classic phenomenon. The key finding of the study was that when crowds were further divided into smaller groups that were allowed to have a discussion, the averages from these groups were more accurate than those from an equal number of independent individuals. For instance, the average obtained from the estimates of four discussion groups of five was significantly more accurate than the average obtained from20independent individuals. In a follow-up study with100university students, the researchers tried to get a better sense of what the group members actually did in their discussion.Did they tend to go with those most confident about their estimates?Did they follow those least willing to change their minds? This happened some of the time, but it wasn’t the dominant response. Most frequently, the groups reported that they“shared arguments and reasoned together.”Somehow, these arguments and reasoning resulted in a global reduction in error.Although the studies led by Navajas have limitations and many questions remain the potential implications for group discussion and decision-making are enormous.12.What is paragraph2of the text mainly about?A.The methods of estimation.B.The underlying logic of the effect.C.The causes of people’s errors.D.The design of Galton’s experiment.13.Navajas’study found that the average accuracy could increase even if________.A.the crowds were relatively smallB.there were occasional underestimatesC.individuals did not communicateD.estimates were not fully independent14.What did the follow-up study focus on?A.The size of the groups.B.The dominant members.C.The discussion process.D.The individual estimates.15.What is the author’s attitude toward Navajas’studies?A.Unclear.B.Dismissive.C.Doubtful.D. Approving.

1.I am an active playgoer and play-reader, and perhaps my best reason for editing this book is a hope of sharing my enthusiasm for the theater with others. To do this I have searched through dozens of plays to find the ones that I think best show the power and purpose of the short play. Each play has a theme or central idea which the playwright(剧作家)hopes to get across through dialogue and action. A few characters are used to create a single impression growing out of the theme. It is not my intention to point out the central theme of each of the plays in this collection, for that would, indeed, ruin the pleasure of reading, discussing, and thinking about the plays and the effectiveness of the playwright. However, a variety of types is represented here. These include comedy, satire, poignant drama, historical and regional drama. To show the versatility(多面性)of the short play, I have included a guidance play, a radio play and a television play.Among the writers of the plays in this collection, Paul Green, Susan Glaspell, Maxwell Anderson, Thornton Wilder, William Saroyan, and Tennessee Williams have all received Pulitzer Prizes for their contributions to the theater. More information about the playwrights will be found at the end of this book. To get the most out of reading these plays, try to picture the play on stage, with you, the reader, in the audience. The houselights dim(变暗). The curtains are about to open, and in a few minutes the action and dialogue will tell you the story.(1)What do we know about the author from the first paragraph?A.He has written dozens of plays.B.He has a deep love for the theater.C.He is a professional stage actor.D.He likes reading short plays to others.(2)What does the author avoid doing in his work?A.Stating the plays' central ideas.B.Selecting works by famous playwrights.C.Including various types of plays.D.Offering information on the playwrights.(3)What does the author suggest readers do while reading the plays? A.Control their feelings. B.Apply their acting skills.e their imagination.D.Keep their audience in mind.(4)What is this text?A.A short story.B.An introduction to a book.C.A play review.D.An advertisement for a theater.2.The traffic signals along Factoria Boulevard in Bellevue, Washington, generally don't flash the same length of green twice in a row, especially at rush hour. At 9:30 am, the full red/yellow/green signal cycle might be 140 seconds. By 9:33 am, a burst of additional traffic might push it to 145 seconds. Less traffic at 9:37am could push it down to 135. Just like the traffic itself, the timing of the signals changes. That is by design. Bellevue, a fast-growing city, just east of Seattle, uses a system that is gaining popularity around the US: intersection(十字路口)signals that can adjust in real time to traffic conditions. These lights, known as adaptive signals, have led to significant declines in both the trouble and cost of travels between work and home."Adaptive signals can make sure that the traffic demand that is there is being addressed," says Alex Stevanovic, a researcher at Florida Atlantic University. For all of Bellevue's success, adaptive signals are not a cure-all for jammed roadways. Kevin Balke, a research engineer at the Texas A&M University Transportation Institute, says that while smart lights can be particularly beneficial for some cities, others are so jammed that only a sharp reduction in the number of cars on the road will make a meaningful difference. "It's not going to fix everything, but adaptive signals have some benefits for smaller cities," he says.In Bellevue, the switch to adaptive signals has been a lesson in the value of welcoming new approaches. In the past, there was often an automatic reaction to increased traffic: just widen the roads, says Mark Poch, the Bellevue Transportation Department's traffic engineering manager. Now he hopes that other cities will consider making their streets run smarter instead of just making them bigger.(1)What does the underlined word "that" in paragraph 2 refer to?A.Increased length of green lights.B.Shortened traffic signal cycle.C.Flexible timing of traffic signals.D.Smooth traffic flow on the road.(2)What does Kevin Balke say about adaptive signals?A.They work better on broad roads.B.They should be used in other cities.C.They have greatly reduced traffic on the road.D.They are less helpful in cities seriously jammed.(3)What can we learn from Bellevue's success?A.It is rewarding to try new things.B.The old methods still work today.C.I pays to put theory into practice.D.The simplest way is the best way.3.Challenging work that requires lots of analytical thinking, planning and other managerial skills might help your brain stay sharp as you age, a study published Wednesday in the journal Neurology suggests.Researchers from the University of Leipzig in Germany gathered more than 1,000 retired workers who were over age 75 and assessed the volunteers' memory and thinking skills through a battery of tests. Then, for eight years, the scientists asked the same group to come back to the lab every 18 months to take the same sorts of tests. Those who had held mentally stimulating(刺激), demanding jobs before retirement tended to do the best on the tests. And they tended to lose cognitive(认知)function at a much slower rate than those with the least mentally challenging jobs. The results held true even after the scientists accounted for the participants' overall health status."This works just like physical exercise," says Francisca Then, who led the study. "After a long run, you may feel like you're in pain, you may feel tired. But it makes you fit. After a long day at work-sure, you will feel tired, but it can help your brain stay healthy."It's not just corporate jobs, or even paid work that can help keep your brain fit, Then points out. A waiter's job, for example, that requires multitasking, teamwork and decision-making could be just as stimulating as any high-level office work. And "running a family household requires high-level planning and coordinating(协调)," she says. "You have to organize the activities of the children and take care of the bills and groceries."Of course, our brains can decline as we grow older for lots of reasons-including other environmental influences or genetic factors. Still, continuing to challenge yourself mentally and keeping your mind busy can only help.。

ASuddenly another thought went through Kate’s mind like an electric shock. An express train was due to go past aboutthirty minutes later. If it were not stopped, that long train, full of passengers, would fall into the stream. “Someone must go to the station and warn the station-master,” Kate thought. But who was to go She would have to go herself. There was no one else.In wind and rain she started on her difficult way. Soon she was at the bridge that crossed the Des Moines River, a bridge alsobuilt of wood, just like the bridge across Honey Creek. Thestorm had not washed this away, but there was no footpathacross it She would have to cross it by stepping from sleeper (枕木)to sleeper. With great care she began the dangerous crossing, sometimes on her hands and knees, hardly daring tolook down between the sleepers into the wild flood waters below. If she should slip, she would fall between the sleepers, intothe rapidly flowing stream. At last - she never knew how long it had taken her - she felt solid ground under her feet. But there was no time to rest. She still had to run more than half a mile and had only a few minutes left. Unless she reached the station before the express did, many, many lives would be lost. She did reach the station just as the train came into sight. Fortunately the station-master was standing outside. “Thebridge is down! Stop the train! Oh, please stop it!” Kate shouted breathlessly. The station-master went pale. He rushed into the stationbuilding and came back with a signal light. He waved the redlight as the train came into the station. It was not a secondtoo early.21. What did Kate decide to doA. Guests will have to produce at least 10 watt hours of electricity - roughly 15 minutes of cycling for someone of average fitness. Guests staying at Plaza Hotel will be given meat tickets worth $36 once they have produced 10 watt hours of electricity. Thebicycles will have smart phones attached to the handlebars measuring how much power is being generated for the hotel. The plan, a world-first, will start on 19 April and run for a year. Only guests staying at the hotel will be able to take part. Frederikke Toemmergaard, hotel spokeswoman, said, “Many of our visitors are business people who enjoy going to the gym. There might be people who will cycle just to get a free meal, but gene rally I don’t think people will take advantage of our programme,”Copenhagen has a long-standing cycling tradition and 36% of locals cycle to work each day, one of the highest percentagesin the world, according to the website visitcopenhagen.dk. US environmental website recently voted Copenhagen the world’s best city for cyclists. “Because Copenhagen is strongly connected with cycling,we felt the bicycle would work well as a symbol of the hotel’s green profile (形象)."If successful, the electric bicycle meal programme will be spread to all Crowne Plaza hotels in the UK, the hotel said ina statement.24. According to paragraph 3, Copenhagen has one of the world's _.A. best chain hotelsB. greenest natural environmentsC. longest bike paths D, highest rales of people cycling to workCDigital technology - email and smart phones especially - have vastly improved workers' ability to be productive outside of a traditional office. Even so, most white-collar work still happens in an office. One reason is that, according to findings of a new survey (调查) of office workers conducted by Wakefield Research for the IT company Citrix, most bosses are doubtful about remote working. Half of the workers say their bossdoesn't accept itand only 35 percent say it’s tolerated.Skeptical bosses will likely have their doubts reinforced (加深)by the same survey, which shows that 43 percent of workers say they’ve watched TV or a movie while “working” remotely, while 35 percent have done housework, and 28 percent have cooked dinner. It is true, however, that working at home makes people muchmore efficient (高效的), because it allows workers to takecare of annoying housework while still getting their jobs done. It’s much faster, for example, to shop for groceries at a quarter to three than to stand in line during the after-work rush. The fact that such practices remain officially unacceptedreflects how far we haven't come as a society from the dayswhen we expected every full-time worker to be supported by afull-time homemaker.More broadly the Wakefield survey suggests that employers maybe missing a low-cost way to give workers something of value. Sixty-four percent of those survey participants who havens worked remotely would rather give up some bonus in order to get even one day a week working from home. Under such circumstances, smart firms need to find ways to let their employees haveenough flexibility to manage their time efficiently.28. Why do some employers hesitate to allow remote workingA. They fear losing control of their workers.B. They want to stick to their routine practice.C. They have little trust in modem technology.D. They are used to face-to-face communication.29- What seems to be most workers’ attitude toward remote workingA. Doubtful.B. Favorable,C. Reserved,D. Disapproving.30. What does the author suggest smart firms doA. Shorten their office hours.B. Give employees a pay raise.C. Adopt flexible work patterns.D. Reduce their staff’s workload.第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
