American SportsThe United States is a sport-loving nation.Sports in America take a variety of forms;organized competitive struggles, which draw huge crowds to cheer their favorite team to victory;athletic games, played for recreation anywhere sufficient space is found;and hunting and fishing. Most sports are seasonal,so that what is happening in sports depends upon the time of year. Some sports are called spectator sports,as the number of spectators really exceeds the number playing in the game.Baseball is the most popular sport in the US.It is played throughout the spring and summer, and professional baseball teams play well into the fall.Although no other game is exactly like baseball, perhaps the one most nearly like it is the English game of cricket(板球).Football is the most popular sport in the fall. The game originated as a college sport more than 75 years ago.It is still played by almost every college and university in the country, and the football stadiums of same of the largest universities seat as many as 80,000people.The game is not the same as European football or soccer. In American football there are 11 players on each team, and they are dressed in padded uniforms and helmets because the game is rough and injuries are likely to occur.Basketball is the winter sport in American schools and colleges.Like football, basketball originated in the US and is not popular in other countries. Many Americans prefer it to football because it is played indoors throughout the winter and because it is a faster game.It is a very popular game with high schools, and in more than 20 states,state-wide high school matches are held yearly.Other spectator sports include wrestling, boxing, and horse racing.Although horse-racing fans call themselves sportsmen, the accuracy of the term is questionable,as only the jockeys(骑师)who ride the horses in the races can be considered athletes. The so-called sportsmen are the spectators, who do not “assemble”(聚集)primarily to see the horse race, but to bet upon the outcome of each race.Gambling is the attraction of horse racing.1.Hunting and fishing are mainly favored by men, young and old,in the US. The Workers’ Role in ManagementTraditionally, it has been the worker’s role to work and management’s role to manage.Managers have planned and directed the firm’s operations with little thought to consulting(咨询) the labor force. Managers have rarely felt compelled(被迫) to obtain the workers’ opinions or to explain their decisions to their employees . At most, companies have provided “suggestion boxes”in which workers could place ideas for improving procedures. In recent years, however, many management specialists have been arguing that workers are more than sellers of labor--they play a vital role in the company and may be able to make significant contributions to its management. Furthermore, major company decisions greatly affect workers and their dependents. This is particularly true of plant closings, which may put thousands on the unemployment lines. School workers play a stronger role in management?Workers should have a role in management. At the very least the labor force should be informed of major policy decision . A common complaint among rank-and-fileworkers(普通工人) is the lack of information about company policies and actions.Between 1980 and 1985 about five million workers were the victims(受害者) of plantclosings and permanent layoffs(解雇),often with no warning. At least 90 days notice ought to be given in such instance so that workers have time to adjust. Management should consult workers before closing a plant because the workers mightbe able to suggest ways of improving productivity and reducing costs and mightbe willing to make concessions(让步) that will help keep the plant operating. It school become a general practice to include workers in some managerial(管理的) decision making. There ought to be representatives(代表)of the workers on the firm’s board of directors or other major policy-making groups. If rank-and-file workers are given a voice in the planning and management of the work flow, they will help to make improvements, their morale(士气) will rise, and their productivity will increase. As a further incentive(激励) they must be given ashare in the company’s profits . This can be done through employee stock-ownership plans, bonuses(奖金),or rewards for efficiency and productivity. Finally, when a plant can no longer operate at a profit, the workers should be given the opportunity to purchase(购买) the plant and run it themselves.1.Traditional workers showed no interest in management.( C )A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given2.“Suggestion box”is one of the many ways for workers to engage in management.( B )A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given3.Since policy decisions are business secrets of a firm, workers should not be informed of them.( C )A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given4.Before closing,a plant should put up a notice and keep it for 90 days.( B )A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Givenpanies should tell their major policy decisions to the workers.( A )A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given6.The workers’ participation(参与) in management might save a plant from closing down.( A )A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given7.Board of directors is the major policymaking group in many companies.( A )A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given8.One of the advantages of involving workers in making a decision is that the interpersonal relationship between workers and managers can be improved.( C )A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given9.An efficient and productive worker should be rewarded with anything but shares in the company’s profits.( B )A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given10.Workers should be allowed to buy the plant if it cannot make a profit anymore.( A )A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given第二部分:阅读选择(每题2分,共10分)阅读下面的短文,请从短文后所给各题的4个选项中选出1个最佳选项。

The first settlement in North AmericaIt is very difficult to say just when colonization(殖民) began. The first hundred years after Christopher Columbus’s journey of in 1492 did not produce any settlement on the North America continent but rather some Spanish trading posts in South America,a great interest in gold and adventure, and some colorful crimes in which the English had their part.John Cabot, originally from Genoa but a citizen of Venice, was established as a trader in Bristol, England, when he made a journey in 1497. But his ship, the Matthew, with its crew of eighteen, did no more than see an island(probably off the New England coast) and return home.He and his son made further voyages across the north Atlantic which enabled the English crown to claim a “legal” title to North America. But for a long time afterwards the Europeans’ interest in America was mainly confined to the Spanish activities further south. The first beginning of permanent settlement in North American was nearly a hundred years after Columbus’s first voyage. The Englishman Sir Walter Raleigh claimed the whole of North America for England, calling it Virginia. In 1585 he sent a small group of people who landed in Roanoke Island, but they stayed only for a year and then went back to England with another expedition, led by Drake,in 1587.A second group who landed in 1587 had all disappeared when a further expedition arrived in 1590.The first permanent settlement in North America was in 1607.English capitalists founded two Virginia companies,a southern one based in London and a northern one based in Bristol. It was decided to give the name New England to the northern area. The first settles in Virginia were little more than wage slaves to the company. All were men and the experiment was not very successful. Many died. Those who survived lived in miserable conditions.By 1619 the colony had only a thousand people.1.We know for sure that colonization began at the end of the 15th century.( B )A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given2.Among the early settlers in South America in the 16th century were Spanish traders.( A )A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given3.With John Cabot’s arrival at an island off the New England coast in 1497,the British Grown claimed to be the legal owner of North America.( B )A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given4.There were eighteen people on board the Matthew during its voyage to North America in 1497.( A )A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given5.The first attempt made by European people to settle down permanently in North America occurred in the 1580s.( A )A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given6.The name Virginia was given to North America by Sir Walter Raleigh.( A )A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given7.The name New England was given to the southern area of North America by the boss of one of the two Virginia companies.( B )A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given8.Sir Walter Raleigh is a capitalist.( C )A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given9.The first settlers in Virginia were all male.( A )A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given10.The living conditions of the first settlers were bad.( A )A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given第二部分:阅读选择(每题2分,共10分)Cells and TemperatureCells cannot remain alive outside certain limits of temperature, and much narrower limits mark the boundaries of effective functioning.Enzyme(酶)systems of mammals and birds are most efficient only within a narrow range around 37℃;a departureof a few degrees from this value seriously impairs their functioning.Even though cells can survive wider fluctuations, the integrated actions of bodily systems are impaired. Other animals have a wider tolerance for changes of bodily temperature. For centuries it has been recognized that mammals and birds differ from other animals in the way they regulate body temperatures.Ways of characterizing the difference have become more accurate and meaningful over time, but popular terminology still reflects the old division into “warm-blooded” and “cold-blooded” species;warm-blooded included mammals and birds, whereas all other creatures were considered cold-blooded.As more species were studied,it became evident that this classification was inadequate.A fence lizard or a desert iguana(鬣蜥)—each cold-blooded---usually has a body temperature only a degree or two below that of humans and so is not cold. Therefore the next distinction was made between animals that maintain a constant body temperature, called homotherms(同温动物),and those whose body temperature varies with their environment, called poikilotherms(变温动物).But this classification also proved inadequate, because among mammals there are many that vary their body temperatures during hibernation.Furthermore, many invertebrates(无脊椎动物) that live in the depths of the ocean never experience a change in the chill of the deep water, and their body temperatures remain constant. The current distinction is between animals whose body temperature is regulated chiefly by internal metabolic processes and those whose temperature is regulated by, and who get most of their heat from, the environment. The former are called endotherms(恒温动物),and the latter are called ectotherms(外温动物).Most ectotherms do regulate their body temperature, and they do so mainly by locomoting to favourable sites or by changing their exposure to external to sources of heat.Endotherms(mainly mammals and birds) also regulate their temperature by choosing favorable environments, but primarily they regulate their temperatures by making a variety of internal adjustments.11.The passage mainly discusses_______( D )A.body temperatures of various animalsB.The newest research on measuring temperatureC.Methods of temperature reductionD.The classification of animals by temperature regulation12.Which of the following terms refers primarily to mammals and birds?( A )A.Warm-bloodedB.EctothermicC.Cold-bloodedD.Poikilothermic13.In general, the temperature of endotherms is regulated______.( B )A.consciouslyB.internallyC.inadequatelyD.environmentally14.According to the passage, the chief way in which ectotherms regulate their temperature is by________.( A )A.seeking out appropriate locationsB.Hibernating part of the yearC.Staying in deep waterD.Triggering certain metabolic processes15.According to the passage, human beings mainly regulate their body temperatures by_______.( B )A.choosing favorable environmentsB.Internal metabolic processesC.Eating more foodD.Doing physical exercises第三部分:概括段落大意和补全句子(每题1分,共10分)阅读下面的短文,请完成短文后的2项测试任务:(1)从第16-20题后所给的6个选项中为第①-⑤段每段选择1个正确的小标题;(2)从第21-25题后所给的6个选项中选择5个正确选项,分别完成每个句子。

A"Shoeless" children are more likely to get to school earlier. leave later and read more. according to a new research by Bournemouth University.According to The Telegraph .researchers have observed tens of thousands of children who leave their shoes outside the classroom and found that pupils are more engaged in their lessons. which in turn leads to better academic performance. The research is in line with policies introduced in schools in England where children who go to class shoeless -following the steps of schools in Scandinavia in an effort to improve their academic standards and behavior. The study is based on observing and studying tens of thousands of children in over 100 schools in around 25 countries over the last ten years. For decades children in northern Europe have learned with their shoes off because they are left at the school door arrival due to snow.ice or mud.And now academics are calling on teachers in England to apply similar "shoeless" policies to give children the best possible chance of performing in their exams. Experts believe having children with no shoes in the classroom improves their learning because it makes them "feel at home" and more relaxed when learning.Professor Stephen Heppell. who leads the research at Bournemouth University, said: "Children are much more willing to sit on the floor and relax if they have no shoes on. The last place a child would sit to read is an upright chair and we've foundthat 95 percent of them actually don't read on a chair at home. When they go on holidays they read lying down. Having conditions in the classroom that are like those at home means that more boys are reading in the classroom. Children also arrive earlier and leave later. which translates into half an hour of extra learning a day on average.”Wearing no shoes also means the cleaning bill decreased by 27 percent and schools need tospend less money on furniture because they don't need to buy a chair and a table for every child as they can sit on the 21. Good behavior pays off in the endBI was talking with a friend not long ago who mentioned he was taking his childrento Paris for the summer vacation, and the only thing I could think of was how grateful I was that my father never did that for me. Our vacations were spent 50 miles south of our home in Indiana, at Lane’s Camping Retreat. The campground had two lakes: one for fishing, the other for swimming. The swimming lake had a diving board about 300 feet high, and every year some kid made his way to the end of the board and then froze with fear. We’d run to the camp store and fetch Mr. Lane, who would walk down to the lake and yell at the kid to jump. But he never would. So Mr. Lane would climb the ladder, throw the kid over his shoulder, and climb back down. One year, our dad bought a tractor inner tube, which amazed us---we had begged him for years for something to float on, and he had resisted, saying it would cause wild excitement and we would drown. Then, unexpectedly, he bought the tube, which lasted several minutes before it broke and sank while my brother was on it. He would have drowned, except he was five feet tall and the water was only three feet deep, so he just stood up and walked to shore. After supper, we would sleep with the tent windows rolled up and Dad telling ghost stories. The raccoons(浣熊)would come out from the woods and move around the campfire, eating the spilled(散落的)pie filling.“What’s that?” Dad would ask. “Someone’s out there. Can you hear them?”We would pull our sleeping bags over our heads and dream of serial killers, then awaken to the sound of birdsong.Though I have never been to Paris, I can’t for the life of me consider myself deprived(被剥夺的).25. To punish the naughty kid.B. To guarantee the kid’s safety.C. To teach the kids swimming skills.D. To help the kids overcome their fear of diving.28. For what reason did the kids pull their sleeping bags over their heads?A. They wanted to drive the raccoons away.B. They were frightened.C. They found the campfire unbearable.D. They felt very coldCProsocial behaviors are those intended to help other people. Behaviors that can be described as prosocial include feeling empathy(同感) and concern for others and behaving in ways to help or benefit other people.Prosocial behavior has long posed a challenge to social scientists seeking to understand why people engage in helping behaviors that are beneficial to others, but costly to the individual performing the action. Why would people do something that benefits someone else but offers no immediate benefit to the doer?Psychologists suggest that there are a number of reasons why people engage in prosocial behavior. In many cases, such behaviors are fostered during childhood and adolescence as adults encourage children to share, act kindly, and help others. Prosocial behaviors are often seen as being compelled by a number of factors including egoistic reasons (doing things to improve one's self-image), reciprocal benefits (doing something nice for someone so that they may one day return the favor), and more altruistic reasons (performing actions purely out of empathy for another individual).Characteristics of the situation can also have a powerful impact on whether or not people engage in prosocial actions. The bystander effect is one of the most notableexamples of how the situation can impact helping behaviors. The bystander effect refers to the tendency for people to become less likely to assist a person in distress when there are a number of other people also present. For example, if you drop your purse and several items fall out on the ground, the likelihood that someone will stop and help you decreases if there are many other people present. This same sort of thing can happen in cases where someone is in serious danger, such as when someone is involved in a car accident. In some cases, witnesses might assume that since there are so many other people present, someone else will have surely already called for help. Why do people help in some situations but not in others? Experts have discovered a number of different situational variables that contribute to (and sometimes interfere with) prosocial behaviors. First, the more people that are present decreases the amount of personal responsibility people feel in a situation. People also tend to look to others for how to respond in such situations, particularly if the event contains some level of ambiguity. Fear of being judged by other members of the group also plays a role. People sometimes fear leaping to assistance, only to discover that their help was unwanted or unwarranted. In order to avoid being judged by other bystanders, people simply take no action.Experts have suggested that some key things must happen in order for a person to take action.29. Which situation can be described as the bystander effect?A. When hearing an injured lady crying for help, the neighbors didn’t take action.B. On the scene of your colleague’s traffic accide nt, you called the police for helpC. A woman was to give birth on the train and you were the only doctor there.D. Seeing an old man slipping on the icy road, many people volunteered to help.30. What does the underlined word “distress” in the fourth par agraph mean?A. comfortB. despairC. peaceD. trouble31. Prosocial behaviors are motivated for all the following reasons EXCEPT________.A. the desire to better one’s self-imageB. instant benefits of helping othersC. parental influences in the early lifeD. empathy for another individual32. After the last paragraph, the most possible topic could be ________.A. situational influences on prosocial behaviorB. various reasons for prosocial behaviorC. possible benefits of prosocial behaviorD. skills and knowledge to provide assistanceDIn many countries, schools have long summer holidays, with shorter holidays in between. However, a new report suggests shortening school holidays to stop children forgetting what they have learnt during the long summer break. Instead of three school terms, it says, there should be five eight-week terms. And there should be just four weeks off in the summer, with a two-week break between the other terms.Sonia Montero has two children at primary school and works full-time. She supports the idea. “The kids,” she says, “have much longer holidays than me and I can’t afford to take several weeks off work, so I need someone to take care of them. But nobody wants the work in the summer months — they all have holidays of their own.”Not surprisingly, some young people disagree. Student Jason Panos says “It’s a stupid idea. I would hate staying at school in the summer. It’s unfair, too. The people who suggest this had long school holidays when they were young, but now they want to stop us enjoying the summer. The kids in Spain and America have much longer holidays than here, but they don’t forget everything they’ve learnt in a few months.”Nadia Salib agrees. “Sure,” she says, “the first week at school after the s ummer is never easy, but you soon get back into it. The real problem round here is that kids get bored after so many weeks out of school, and then some of them start causing trouble. But the answer is to give them something to do, not make everyone stay in school longer.”33. What does Nadia say about young people on summer holidays?A. They need something to do to enrich themselves.B. Long holidays are very bad for their education.C. They would like to spend more time at school.D. Long holidays should be shortened to stop them causing trouble.34. What does Jason say about long summer holidays?A. These days many older people have them too.B. Schools in other countries don’t have them.C. They can help children forget about school. D. T hey have little influence on children’s education.35. Why is Sonia in support of shorter school holidays?A. .She can’t afford to pay someone to look after her children.B. She is worried that her children will forget what they’ve learnt.C. She doesn’t get any summer holidays in her jobD. She can’t get anyone to look after her children in summer.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

They say Ireland’s the BestIreland’s is the best place in the World to live for 2005.According to a life quality ranking(排名) that appeared in Britain’s Economist magazine last week. The ambitious attempt to compare happiness levels around the world is based on the principle that wealth is not the only measure of human satisfaction and well-being.The index of 111 countries uses data on incomes, health,Unemployment, climate, political stability, job security, gender(性别) equality as wellas what the magazine calls“freedom, family and community life”.Despite the bad weather, trouble health service, traffic congestion(拥挤),gender inequality, and the high cost of living,Ireland scored-place Switzerland, which managed 8.07. The tiny, delicate skeletons are usually scattered by scavengers(⾷腐动物) weathering before they can be fossilized. Ichthyosaurs(鱼龙) had a higher chance of being preserved than did terrestrial creatures because, as marine animals, they tended to live in environments less subject to erosion. Still, their fossilization required a suite of factors: a slow rate of decay of soft tissues, little scavenging by other animals, alack of swift currents and waves to jumble and carry away small bones, and fairlyrapid burial. Given these factors, some areas have become a treasury of well-preserved ichthyosaur fossils. The deposits at Holzmaden, Germany, present an interesting case for analysis. The ichthyosaur remains are found in black, bituminous marine shales(页岩) deposited about 190 million years ago. Over the years, thousands of specimens of marine reptiles, fish and invertebrates have been recovered from these rocks. The quality of preservation is outstanding, but what is even more impressive is the number of ichthyosaur fossils containing preserved embryos.Ichthyosaur with embryos have been reported from 6 different levers of the shale in a small area around Holzmaden, suggesting that a specific site was used by large numbers of ichthyosaurs repeatedly over time. The embryos are quite advanced in their physical development; their paddles, for example, are already well formed. One specimen is even preserved in the birth canal. In additional, the shale contains the remains of many newborns that are between 20 and 30 inches long. Why are these so many pregnant females and young at Holzmaden when they are so rare elsewhere? The quality of preservation is almost unmatched and quarry operations have been carried out carefully with an awareness of the value of the fossils. But these factors do not account for the inter-esting question of how how there came to be such a concentration of pregnant ichthyosaurs in a particular place very close to their time of giving birth.11.All of the following are mentioned as factors that encourage fossilization except the_____( D )A. speed of buryingB.conditions of the waterC.rate at which soft tissues decayD.cause of death of the animal12.which of the following is true of the fossil deposits discussedin the passage?( B )A.They include examples of newly discovered specie.B.They contain large numbers of well-perserved specimensC.They are older than fossils found in other places.D.They have been analyzed more carefully than other fossils.13.The word“outstanding"in Paragraph2is closest in meaning to_____( D )A.“extensive"B.“surprisingC."vertical"D.“excellent"14.Why does the author mention the specimen preserved in the birth canal?( A )A.To illustrate that the embryo fossils are quite advanced in their development.B.To explain why the fossils are well preserved.C.To indicate how the ichthyosaurs died.D.To prove that ichthyosaurs are marine animals.15.Which of the following best expresses the relationship between the firstand second paragraphs?( C )A.The first paragraph describes a place while the second paragraph describes a field of study.B.The first paragraph defines the terms that are used in the second paragraph.C.The second paragraph describes a specific instance of the general topic discussed in the first paragraph.D.The second paragraph presents information that contrasts with the information given in the first paragraph.第三部分:概括段落⼤意和补全句⼦(第16 -25题,每题1分,共10分)阅读下⾯短⽂,请完成短⽂后的2项测试任务:(1)从第16-20题后所给的6个选项中为第①~⑤段每段选择1个正确的⼩标题;(2)从第21~25题后所给的6个选项中选择5个正确选项,分别完成每个句⼦。

Racing into action were conservationists, government officials, and local community members of Ruko Community Wildlife Conservancy in Kenya to try and construct a “giraffe-raft(救生艇)” in order to ferry them across the lake to safety on higher ground.Longicharo Island in Lake Baringo wasn't always an island, but rather a peninsula(半岛) that split apart after years of intense flooding. The giraffes arrived in 2011, brought by park guarders who believed it was a danger-free place. They kept them fed and healthy, traveling the river by boat. Finally, with more flooding on the horizon, authorities agreed that, with the island continuing to shrink, the threat of losing the valuable animals was too great. One of the tallest and widest of their species, building the giraffe-raft required imagination and planning. It would have to be a strong and balanced one.For several months, the workers familiarized the giraffes with the rescue craft on land until recently when the team calmed Asiwa, an adult female, and covered her eyes to make the trip successfully. Gizmodo had an email exchange with David O'Connor, President of Save Giraffes Now, the non-profit that participated in the daring rescue. He described the special pen(围栏) that was designed specifically for the occasion. "It floats on the top of a series of empty drums and there were specially-built sides that kept Asiwa from jumping out," he explained.Asiwa, has always been a priority for the team on the ground, as she was the most vulnerable. It is a relief for all involved to have got her safely across to the mainland and we are sure she is enjoying the space in her new home! Asiwa is now on dry land and awaits the other giraffes that will join her on a special 4,400-acre reservation with high, secure fencing that should keep them safe from predators.4、Which of the following were stuck in Longicharo Island?A. Some crocodiles.B. Several conservationists.C. Some giraffes of great value.D. Eight government officials.5、Which did the rescuers have to face?A. There weren't enough hands.B. It was tough to build a special tool for shipment.6、Why did the rescuers cover Asiwa's eyes during the trip?A. To avoid her being frightened.B. To help her fall asleep normally.C. To stop her from hurting the rescuers.D. To make her more familiar with the raft.7、What makes the rescuers relieved?A. Asiwa has joined her family.B. The shipment of Asiwa has succeeded.C. The flood has disappeared completely now.D. The flooded island is equipped with safe fence.18-year-old Alison Sanger is an amazing student. Maybe too amazing—the book opens with Alison lying to her mother about having food poisoning so she can take a test on Shakespeare. More than getting good grades, her true motivation is to beat her opponent, Ethan Molloy.Ethan has gone toe-to-toe with Alison on everything throughout school. They're both honors students. They are co-vice presidents of the senior class. They both hope to get into Harvard. The fact that Ethan and Alison seem to always do everything at the same time turned into a competition a long time ago. Whoever does worse on an exam must do an unpleasant task of the winner's choosing. If someone misses the exam, they forfeit. This unfriendly competition is so famous that everyone at Fairview knows about it, students and staff. They're even more annoyed by it than Alison. The principal takes matters in hand by asking the two to co-plan a previous class's ten-year reunion after someone else dropped the ball. As you might imagine, tensions arise and passion is aroused. In a certain way, What's Not to Love is a little like The Hunger Games. Like Katniss with Peeta, Alison is constantly evaluating her own emotions against Ethan's supposed strategy. While reading this book, I was forced to wonder exactly how healthy this relationship was.I assumed everyone's intentions in the book were honorable—the authors themselves turned out all right in the end, and I'm incredibly glad for that. Wibbroka fans will not be disappointed—What's Not to Love is story of soulmates and passion; its short chapters and tight pacing carry the reader along all the way to the satisfying conclusion. Despite its faults—which the text itself calls to attention—fans of enemies-to-lovers stories like How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days will feel right at home here.8、Why does Alison lie to her mother?A. To treat her food poisoning.B. To prove that she's also amazing.C. To be able to be tested on schedule.D. To please her friend with good grades.9、What does "forfeit" in Paragraph 2 probably mean?A. Compete.B. Withdraw.C. Cooperate.D. Succeed.10、How does the principal's attempt to help the two girls end?A. They prove their abilities separately.B. They get the final result of their competition.C. They set up a better relationship between them.D. They use it as another chance to continue the competition.11、What does the author think of the book?A. Worth reading.B. Useless.C. Unreasonable.D. Perfect. The European continent's landmarks shine an even more attractive light than usual—if partly because of their inaccessibility. And few European attractions pop up more often on postcards than its castles. But the best place for serious castle spotters may come as a surprise. It's not France's Loire or Germany's Bavaria. The true centre is Wales, which features more castles per square mile than any other country in Europe. From the northern mountains of Snowdonia to Swansea Bay in the south, castles that could have dropped out of Camelot shoot up everywhere. Why are there so many? Blame it partly on Wales' history as a controversial land. Fighting over it, the Normans, the native Welsh, and the English, led by Edward I, all built splendid castle in an explosion of castle building that occupied the 13th and 14th centuries. The number of Welsh castles is matched by their variety. "For a small country," says historian Kate Roberts, "we have just about every type and form, including concentric castles with moated(护城河) defenses, castles with a strong gate tower, castles that make every possible use of natural defenses, and castles designed to be beautiful luxurious(豪华)houses."That vast range of castles suggests just how deeply the castles reflect Wales' unrest, always shifting history. Take Chepstow Castle, which stands at a cliff overlooking the River Wye. The 11th-century castle started life as one of the first Norman command posts constructed by William FitzOsbern, a close ally(盟友) of William the Conqueror. But it was its next commander, William Marshall, who turned the homely castle into a frightening Norman one, building the first twin-towered gatehouse in Britain. The castle did double duty. It also served as the storehouse for the gold and silver collected by Marshall. Chepstow's most striking attraction is its giant wooden doors - the oldest in Europe—which were originally wrapped in iron plates to both resist invaders and keep Marshall's robbed treasures safe.12、Where are Castle lovers most likely to travel?A. America.B. Wales.C. France's Loire.D. Germany's Bavaria.13、What does Kate Roberts want to say in Paragraph 4?A. Castles can take the place of history.B. People will use the castles as their shelters.C. Castles have been designed as sports.D. There are many castles in Wales.14、Why does the author take Chepstow Castle as an example?A. To show it's designed well.B. To show it has many functions.C. To show it has witnessed unrest changes.D. To show it can be used as a history book.15、Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A. Wales Has the Most Castles in EuropeB. Wales Has the Most Castles in the WorldC. The Castles Are History in the EuropeD. The History of Old Palaces and Castles二、七选五16、 Many quick service restauranteurs are looking ahead to a future where automation will play an important role. They believe it will be the key to greatly increasing their thin profits. ①_____Robots in the workplace can get a bad reputation—most people aren't trying to get replaced by a robot. But the smartest and most creative robotic companies aren't designing teams of robots that send people packing. ②_____ In this way efficiency and profits in the process increase.Take Flippy, the arm-like robotic kitchen assistant. As its name implies, the robot flips(轻翻) burgers, cooking them to perfection. Introducing Flippy into a kitchen can keep kitchen productivity high and costs low. ③_____ They're designed to be cooperative robots, the cost-effective machines created to work with humans, not against them.④_____ They don't complain about fried food grease getting in their pores(气孔), or burn the chicken tenders after getting distracted by a cute coworker. Owners then will potentially need workers to enforce updated safety regulations and interact with dissatisfactory guests. ⑤_____ With Flippy having their back in the kitchen, however, they'll know they won't have to worry about burnt burgers on top of confused customers.A. Restaurants are in need of a helping hand.B. It may not be an easy job for those workers.C. Robots are great at efficiency and mindless tasks.D. The tiny, delicate skeletons are usually scattered by scavengers(食腐动物) weathering before they can be fossilized. But these factors do not account for the inter-esting question of how how there came to be such a concentration of pregnant ichthyosaurs in a particular place very close to their time of giving birth.11.All of the following are mentioned as factors that encourage fossilization except the_____( D )A. speed of buryingB.conditions of the waterC.rate at which soft tissues decayD.cause of death of the animal12.which of the following is true of the fossil deposits discussedin the passage?( B )A.They include examples of newly discovered specie.B.They contain large numbers of well-perserved specimensC.They are older than fossils found in other places.D.They have been analyzed more carefully than other fossils.13.The word“outstanding"in Paragraph2is closest in meaning to_____( D )A.“extensive"B.“surprisingC."vertical"D.“excellent"14.Why does the author mention the specimen preserved in the birth canal?( A )A.To illustrate that the embryo fossils are quite advanced in their development.B.To explain why the fossils are well preserved.C.To indicate how the ichthyosaurs died.D.To prove that ichthyosaurs are marine animals.15.Which of the following best expresses the relationship between the firstand second paragraphs?( C )A.The first paragraph describes a place while the second paragraph describes a field of study.B.The first paragraph defines the terms that are used in the second paragraph.C.The second paragraph describes a specific instance of the general topic discussed in the first paragraph.D.The second paragraph presents information that contrasts with the information given in the first paragraph.第三部分:概括段落大意和补全句子(第16 -25题,每题1分,共10分)阅读下面短文,请完成短文后的2项测试任务:(1)从第16-20题后所给的6个选项中为第①~⑤段每段选择1个正确的小标题;(2)从第21~25题后所给的6个选项中选择5个正确选项,分别完成每个句子。
