In the tow n where I grew up, there were two creeks running through it. I n the 1) win ter, I'd trap muskrats, and we also skated a lot. Rocky Fork Creek ran a great distanee, and we'd 2) literally skate for miles. Big Walnut Creek on the other hand was where more folks from the 3) community came to skate socially. It was a much 4) wider creek. We'd have bon fires there and had some great hockey games, too.
My friend, Zeke, had 6 5) siblings and every kid in the family had their own horse, so we'd go to Zeke's and ride through the 6) woods and meadows. Zeke would pull us on sleds using his dad's tractor. In the summer, we'd 7) explore the creeks, and I'd be 8) catching s nakes and frogs, and fishi ng.
In the summer my family and I traveled to Butler, PA to visit my grandparents. We would play golf or at ni ght we all played cards. Gran dpa would take me fish ing and he and I 9) would run erra nds all around town in his red old car. On Friday nights he and I watched the Gillette Fights.
My family and I also spe nt two weeks each summer at Conn eaut Lake Park. There was a huge three-story hotel whose grou nds were really beautiful. The park also had a small 10) golf course, and a midway, and I recall we could ride all the rides in the amusement park for only $2 on Wednesdays. I'd get up and go fishi ng in a n earby canal before the rest of the family awoke.

Scien tific research should improve our overall quality of life. The gover nment should provide financial and political support to any research that is likely to result in immediate and sig ni fica nt ben efits for the people. However, people's ideas 1)vary whe n it comes to whether the government should support scientific research with no practical use. Still 2) a large portion of people believe that the gover nment should distribute adequate funds to any scientific research that aims to improve the 3)well-being of people, even if it is of no practical use in the short run.
Scien tific research whose social ben efits are immediate, predictable, and 4)profo und should con ti nue to be a high priority. For example, biotech no logy research has bee n prove n to help cure and preve nt diseases; in formati on tech no logy en ables educati on to be more 5) accessible; and com mun icatio n tech no logy facilitates global peace by improv ing mutual un dersta nding among people and their participati on in the democratic process.
However, this is not to say that research whose ben efits are less immediate or clear should be given a lower priority. It is difficult to predict which research will 6)ultimately lead to the greatest con tributi ons to society. Relucta nee to finance less practical scie ntific research could 7)have a harmful effect on the efforts to explore new kno wledge. This is particularly true of the computer scie nces. For in sta nee, before the first computer was inven ted, public opinions 8)we nt aga inst it, as most people saw nothing practical in computer research. However, computers tran sformed the way huma n society evolved and proved to be of great avail in the long run, especially in terms of scientific development in fields such as the military, medicine, 9)aviation, and education.
Therefore, n ever should we think that scie ntific research whose ben efits are unknown 10)is not worth purs uing since the purpose of any research should be to discover truths, whatever it might be.
