Other countries like Venezuela paved the way, and Brazil is going to have to use those tools as well if it wants to compete in Miss University beauty contests.”But Brazil’s love for plastic surgery is not limited to beauty contests. If you’re trying to reach a weight-loss goal, a new hairstyle is a quick and easy way to freshen up your looks—and boost your confidence. According to a popular hair stylist, clients often say, “I want to cut my hair, but I should lose weight first.”But that’s not the right sequence; it’s the other way around. You should know what hairstyle will flatter you the most, the style that will show off you particular feature to the best advantage even before you begin to lose weight. For example, many may want to follow a tread and wear long hair. But some may look better with shorter hair if they have a round face. “When it’s too long, it can drag your face down and actually bring attention to the features you don’t want to emphasize,” says Guy Riggio, a famous hair stylist in Los Angeles. How short is too short? That depends the length of your neck. Riggio says, “The longer the neck, the shorter you can go.”Some top stylists believe that women should stay clear of bangs. Thick bangs may be fashionable at times, but even thin bangs are hard to wear. “They change the shape of your face, making it seem shorter,” says New York hair stylist O’Connor. Instead, you should pull your hair away from your face. It will make your face look longer. Finally, pick a stylist who’s knowledge able and whose opinion can be trusted. Then have fun with the new style. For Reference:1. It is a quick and easy way to freshen up your looks—and boost your confidence2. The largest group, the Han, makes up over 91% of China’s population. As the majority of the population is of the Han ethnic group, the other 55 ethnic groups are customarily referred to as the national minorities. The Han people can be found throughout the country, though mainly on the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River, the Yangtze River and the Pearl River valleys, and the Northeast Plain. The national minorities, though fewer in number, are also widely dispersed throughout China, often inhabiting important border regions from northeast China to north, northwest and southwest China. It is recorded in the history that there were people specializing in martial arts during the periods of Spring and Autumn and the Warring States, and considered it as a theory to maintain good health and applied it in wars when necessary. The martial arts are either bare-handed or weapon-in-hand practice or performance according to certain sets. Generally speaking, modern martial arts consist of such five categories as boxing, weapon exercises, sparring exercises, actual combat and teamwork. The five categories can be further divided into different schools or styles. The martial arts play positive roles in strengthening the body, developing the potential of the body, tempering people’s will power and even curing difficult and complex cases of illness. One of the programs is Soutak Wasel (“Your V oice is Heard”), nicknamed “Islamic Idol” by Abu Heiba, a program similar to American Idol.2. The 99The 99, also written as The Ninety-Nine, is a comic book published by Teshkeel Comics, featuring a team of superheroes based on Islamic culture and religion. The series is a creation of Dr. Naif Al-Mutawa, founder and C.E.O. of Teshkeel Media Group. Although the series is based on Islamic concepts, it is promoted as appealing to universal virtues, and the religion of each character isnot made explicit. The 99 are ordinary teenagers and adults from across the globe, who come into possession of one of the 99 mystical Noor Stones (Stones of Light) and find themselves empowered in a specific manner. All dilemmas faced by The 99will be overcome through the combined powers of three or more members. Through this, The 99series aims to promote values such as cooperation and unity throughout the Islamic world. Although the series is not religious, it aims to communicate Islamic virtues which are, as viewed by Dr. Al-Mutawa, universal in nature. The concept of The 99is based on the 99 attributes of Allah. Many of these names refer to characteristics that can be possessed by human individuals. They have divergent values. And should they ever come in contact ... well, I’ve got to tell you, it’s just not going to be pretty. My experience however, in the Islamic world is very different. Where I work, in the Arab region, people are busy taking up Western innovations and changing them into things which are neither conventionally Western, nor are they traditionally Islamic. I want to show you two examples. The first is 4Shbab. It means “for youth” and it’s a new Arab TV channel.(Video): Video clips from across the globe. The USA.♫I am not afraid to stand alone ♫♫I am not afraid to stand alone, if Allah is by my side ♫♫I am not afraid to stand alone ♫♫Everything will be all right ♫♫I am not afraid to stand alone ♫The Arab world.(Music)♫(Urdu) ♫Shereen El Feki:4Shbab has been dubbed Islamic MTV. Its creator, who is an Egyptian TV producer called Ahmed Abou Haïba, wants young people to be inspired by Islam to lead better lives. He reckons the best way to get that message across is to use the enormously popular medium of music videos. In the world of 4Shbab, it’s not about bump and grind. But it’s not abou t fire and brimstone either. Its videos are intended to show a kinder, gentler face of Islam, for young people to deal with life’s challenges. Now, my sec ond example is for a slightly younger crowd. And it’s called “The 99.” Now, these are the world’s first Islamic superheroes. They were created by a Kuwaiti psychologist called Nayef Al Mutawa. And his desire is to rescue Islam from images of intolerance, all in a child-friendly format. “The 99,” the characters are meant to embody the 99 attributes of Allah, justice, wisdom, mercy, among others. So, for example, there is the character of Noora. She is meant to have the power to look inside people and see the good and bad in everyone. Another character called Jami has the ability to create fantastic inventions. Now, “The 99” is not just a comic book. It’s now a theme park. There is an animated series in the works. And by this time next year the likes of Superman and Wonder Woman will have joined forces with “The 99” to beat injustice wherever they find it.“The 99” and 4Shbab are just two of many examples of this sort of Islamic cross-cultural hybridization. We’re not talking here about a clash of civilizations. Nor is it some sort of indistinguishable mash. I’d like to think of it as a mesh of civilizations, in which the strands of different cultures are intertwined.Source/html/AandV/multithematic/2008/1021/2487.htmlSpeaking WorkshopExpressions & Structures to Useaudio and video clips. What caused my cousin Polle to die?Answer: Inadequate healthcare.4. What do I think is the problem with stereotypes?Answer:They are incomplete.5. How can we regain a kind of paradise?Answer: By rejecting the single story.done to me. But the truth is that I had a very happy childhood, full of laughter and love, in a very close-knit family. But I also had grandfathers who died in refugee camps. My cousin Polle died because he could not get adequate healthcare. One of my closest friends, Okoloma, died in a plane crash because our fire trucks did not have water. I grew up under repressive military governments that devalued education, so that sometimes my parents were not paid their salaries. And so, as a child, I saw jam disappear from the breakfast table, then margarine disappeared, then bread became too expensive, then milk became rationed. And most of all, a kind of normalized political fear invaded our lives. All of these stories make me who I am. But to insist on only these negative stories is to flatten my experience, and to overlook the many other stories that formed me. The single story creates stereotypes. And the problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, but that they are incomplete.Stories matter. Many stories matter. Stories have been used to dispossess and to malign. But stories can also be used to empower, and to humanize. Stories can break the dignity of a people. But stories can also repair that broken dignity.I would like to end with this thought: That when we reject the single story, when we realize that there is never a single story about any place, we regain a kind of paradise. Thank you. Adapted from/talks/chimamanda_adichie_the_danger_of_a_single_story.html Note1. Mariah Carey: an American singer, songwriter, record producer andactress. Equality, unity and common prosperity are the fundamental principles of China’s government in handling the relations between different ethnic groups. Meanwhile, China exercises a policy of regional autonomy for various ethnic groups, allowing ethnic groups living incompact communities to establish self-government and direct their own affairs.•Unit TestsUnit Test - I1-5: BDADB6-10: CBACA11-15: CBDAD16-20: CDDBCUnit Test - II1-5: BCCBC(6)C. insecure(7)G. compare(8)H. influence(9)J. impact(10)L. post(11)M. surveyed(12)I. negative(13)O. participants(14)D. preoccupation(15)A. establish16-20: DCBDA21-25: CCADAU2•Textbook StudyListening1)habit of living2)profound changes3)human activities4)extinction events5)human agricultural technology 6)domesticating7)cultivate plants8)intimate knowledge9)familiar with10)human companionsText B1)spreading the word about “the crisis facing these social, sensitive, passionately intense, playful, complex, exceedingly intelligent and endangered creatures”.2)their sizes and species.3)they are quite consciously together, each pacing herself to the other’s gait and waiting for the other to catch up.4)stood vigil outside the building, knowing that her friend was inside.5)saw past the things they didn’t have in common and found in each other common ground enough•CET-Oriented StudyListening1、B2、A3、C4、D5、C6、A7、D8、AReading Comprehension(1)G(2)A(3)F(4)J(5)B(6)K(7)C(8)H(9)I(10)BParagraph Translation(翻译参考)Chinese martial arts may be traced back to prehistoric timeswhen Chinese ancestors used stones and wooden clubs in hunting for subsistence and self-defense. It is recorded in the history thatthere were people specializing in martial arts during the periods of Spring and Autumn and the Warring States, and considered it as a theory to maintain good health and applied it in wars when necessary. The martial arts are either bare-handed or weapon-in-hand practiceor performance according to certain sets. A comprehensive plan for the promotion of ecological progress was outlined in the politicalreport to the Eighteenth National Congress of the CPC. Unit 2EntrepreneurshipUnit NavigationEntrepreneurs are believed to be the key drivers of tomorrow’s innovations and integral to creating a thriving economy. What is entrepreneurship? What does it mean to be an entrepreneur? How can entrepreneurs make the world a better place? In this unit, you’ll watch videos on how some of the world’s most successful entrepreneurs started up their businesses and rose to success, listen to a talk on how to make a venture capital (VC) pitch, and touch on social entrepreneurship by watching a video about a social enterprise addressing social problems through business-based solutions. Along with opportunities and achievements, there are high pressure, risks, challenges, setbacks and failures. It is a rewarding but incredibly challenging journey. The author of the quotation is Vivek Wadhwa, who is a Fellow at Arthur & Toni Rembe Rock Center for Corporate Governance, Stanford University. In 2012, the U.S. Government awarded Wadhwa distinguished recognition as an “Outstanding American by Choice”.Unit GoalsIn this unit, you will✓pick up useful words and expressions related to entrepreneurship;✓develop your own thinking about entrepreneurship;✓learn to use word maps in note-taking;✓learn to support your ideas by paraphrasing and quoting others during a discussion;✓learn to explain a method or a process in presentations. Background Information1. EntrepreneurshipEntrepreneurship is the process of starting a business or other organization. The entrepreneur develops a business plan, acquires the human and other required resources, and is fully responsible for the success or failure of the business. In recent years, “entrepreneurship”has been extended from its origins in for- profit businesses to include social entrepreneurship and the concept of the political entrepreneur. Entrepreneurs are leaders willing to take risk and exercise initiative, taking advantage of market opportunities by planning, organizing, and deploying resources, often by creating new or improving existing products. More recently, the term entrepreneurship has been extended to include a specific mindset resulting in entrepreneurial initiatives.According to Paul Reynolds, founder of the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, “Participating in a new business creation is a common activity among U.S. workers over the course of their careers.” In recent years, entrepreneurship has been claimed as a major driver of economic growth in both the United States and Western Europe.2. Social EntrepreneurshipSocial entrepreneurship is the attempt to draw upon business techniques to find solutions to social problems. Entrepreneurship becomes a social endeavor when it transforms social capital in a way that affects society positively. It is viewed as advantageous because the success of social entrepreneurship depends on many factors related to social impact that traditional corporate businesses do not prioritize. Social entrepreneurs recognize immediate social problems, but also seek to understand the broader context of an issue that crosses disciplines, fields, and theories. Gaining a larger understanding of how an issue relates to society allows social entrepreneurs to develop innovative solutions and mobilize available resources to affect the greater global society.Lead-in MaterialI. The scale of the resulting deaths or property damage depends on the human ability to resist the disasters.Sometimes two seemingly different disasters may be related to each other. For example, an undersea earthquake may result in a tsunami. While there is a long dry spell in one area, there may be a great flood in another.A drought is a long-lasting weather pattern consisting of dry conditions with very little or no precipitation. During this period, food and water supplies can run low, and other conditions, such as famine, can occur. Droughts can last for several years and are particularly damaging in areas in which the residents depend on agriculture for survival.A flood follows too much rain or water in a location, and could be the result of many different conditions. Floods can be caused by heavy rainfall from a storm, including thunderstorms, rapid melting of large amounts of snow, or rivers which swell from too much precipitation upstream, causing widespread damage to areas downstream. Another possible cause of floods is the bursting of man-made dams.Unit 3 V 1Disaster has struck inHaiti. An earthquake of huge proportions erupted in theCaribbeanisland—one of the poorest communities in the West. Buildings, which were badly built, tumbled, burying thousands of people in their own homes.Haitiis a poor country with few emergency services to help. The islanders had to use their bare hands to search for their families. They waited for teams from overseas countries likeBritainand theUnited Statesto bring equipment and manpower to help rescue any survivors they could find. It's feared that more than 100,000 people have died. One school friend lies injured on the pavement. Another voices her sorrow. The historic cathedral was badly damaged; and at the presidential palace, the roof collapsed. The islanders here know about in an area where there are frequent tremors and also tropical storms. But last week's earthquake registered seven on the Richter scale—almost as high as the scale can go. It was the biggest for 200 years. It happened eight kilometers beneath the Earth's crust—that's quite close to the surface, so the tremors were really strong. There were also lots of aftershocks—tremors that happen after the main earthquake. Those aftershocks can also cause damage as buildings collapse further and trap people who might have survived the first disaster. The British government has promised 20 million pounds of aid to helpHaiti, and many people have also made donations. Now the concern is to prevent disease hitting areas without clean water or enough medical help.Unit 3 VI 2the company was composed entirely of men over 65, there was doubt that they would be of any assistance. But the farmer called the company anyway because the fire proved to be more than the small town fire department could handle, and there was no other help available.2. The truck drove straight toward the fire and, instead of stopping in front of the fire, drove right into the middle of the flames.3. After an hour of intense fighting, they had extinguished the fire.4. He presented the volunteer fire company with a check for $10,000.5. The captain said, "The first thing we're going to do is to get the brakes fixed on that stupid fire truck." That suggests that they drove right into the middle of the flames because of useless brakes rather than bravery.Unit 3 viewing and speaking 1Voice-over: Trapped indoors by raging floodwaters for more than 24 hours, a 91-year-old woman is rescued by firemen and carried to safety. It's the worst flooding in Coggeshall and the surrounding villages inEssexin more than 50 years, and it's taken residents here by surprise.Elderly woman: I came from home, because my place was flooded with burst pipes, so I came down to my son's to be safe and got this. So, I just wonder what I've done wrong to get all this!Voice-over: Emergency crews have been evacuating people like this woman and her baby since the banks of the River Blackwater burst this weekend. Parts of easternEnglandwere hit yesterday after a month's worth of rain fell here in a day. People told me there was no time to save their belongings.Woman: By the time the high tide had come up at quarter to four in the morning, the water was up to the piano keys. It'd come right up here, and I mean you can just see on the, on the, on the furniture where the water had come up to.Voice-over: There was flooding in Cambridgeshire too. Staff were mopping up water at this doctor's surgery in Borne, trying to get the facilities back to normal.Doctor: It's wrecked all the computer system. It's managed unfortunately to get to a few of the old notes. It's also affected all our drugs that are here, including the flu jabs we were hoping to run our flu jabs sessions.Voice-over: A few roads inEssexin Cambridgeshire remain virtually impassable, but water levels are dropping. The question for residents here now is what will happen if they get even more heavy rain in the next few days.Unit 4Lead inc d a e h f i g bBasic listeningCBABDListening inTask l CBDAATask 2Relationshipsmarketing managerin conflict withexpensesended in vaintraining administratorvisitedestablish closer relationshipslong-termpicked upTask 3 CDDCALet's talkTask 116featuresbriefeightpaperguidelinesinterviewstreatmentcome backDeadlinesmeetguidancescaryFurther listening >Task 1 DBCACTask 2 BABABTask 31. Could you tell us the secrets of your successful careerBaxter: Just as the golden rule of real estate is "location, location, location", the golden rule of work is "relationships, relationships, relationships". Unfortunately, many workers focus so hard on the job at hand that they never develop useful relationships with people in other parts of their organization. Worse, when they do interact with colleagues in other departments, they may not treat them with respect.Lillian: Could you give me more detailsBaxter: Let's take Wendy as an example. She switched jobs several months ago in the company. In her first position, as a marketing manager, she frequently found herself in conflict with the financial department over her staff's expenses. Her argument for more funds usually ended in vain. Then in her new job as training administrator, she wanted to launch an on-the-job training project. She needed the financial department to support her request for a budget. How did she convince them this time Although the financial department's offices were located in another city, Wendy decided to visited them in their offices and try to establish closer relationships. She believed she must first of all understand their mission and their own training needs. Then she found an ally in the company's chief financial officer, who saw how her group could help develop his staff. Thus the two forged a long-term alliance, which led to a training program so successful that it has since been picked up by the company's offices inGermanyandJapan. Winning allies throughout your organization has an additional benefit. These days, it's far too risky to expect your work to speak for itself. Having allies who speak well of you increases your reputation with the top management.Unit 4 let’s tallk 1Ayesha: In the newsroom you have about 16 reporters. The news reporters sit in one part of the room, and you have features on the other side of the room. You start at eight but you don't know how long that's gonna go on for. Hello.Kevin: Hi Ayesha. So we're really looking for a featurey sort of piece for tomorrow's paper.Ayesha: FrenchayHospital, which is one of our hospitals inBristol. They're celebrating their 10 years of this head injury unit, and we've been invited up. We're gonna obviously cover and take pictures, and I'm gonna get to speak to people. So he was really giving me guidelines.Kevin: You know when you're doing your interviews, speak to people in some detail about, you know, how they were injured in the first place, but then the treatment they've gone through. OKAyesha: Yeah. Excellent! Thank you!Well, I've just started writing up for my next, and just basically from the day. I've got to getsomething through, I think, by about four. Sometimes I come back and I've got so much going on in my hands. So I'm just trying to, sort of, just work it through. Deadlines are very stressful. But you have to meet them because it's important; it's part of what newspaper journalism is allabout. You get used to it by getting the guidance, managing your time, but it's still scary. OK. It's all done. OK. This is theBristolfinal. C. Answer the following question:
Eating cheeseburgers affects the environment in many ways. First you
have to feed the cows. You need a lot of water to grow the food for them.
Then you need wheat to make the bread that the hamburger goes on. That
needs water too. Once you have the beef you have to transport the meat
from one place to another. You also have to keep it cold. To do all of
these things you need a lot of energy. And this produces a lot of CO2.
And carbon dioxide isn’t the only greenhouse gas that’s created. Cows
also produce another greenhouse gas called methane when they make waste.
And cows create a lot of waste. When you add it all up the result is a
very big number.
