The discharge valve of the compressor is forced open when the pressure within the cylinder increases sufficiently, allowing the passage of the gas into the condenser on its final stage. The condenser consists of an arrangement of pipes through which the gas flows, submerged in comparatively cold water. or exposed to a flow of air initiated by means of a fan . The result is a lowering of the gas temperature below the boiling point ,causing it to condense .

Liquid refrigerant leaving a container, called a liquid receiver, under pressure, passes through a throttling device that can regulate its flow to any desired amount. Throttling devices vary in design according to the type of service, and include the expansion valve , a capillary tube , and a liquid float valve .
