The discharge valve of the compressor is forced open when the pressure within the cylinder increases sufficiently, allowing the passage of the gas into the condenser on its final stage. The condenser consists of an arrangement of pipes through which the gas flows, submerged in comparatively cold water. or exposed to a flow of air initiated by means of a fan . The result is a lowering of the gas temperature below the boiling point ,causing it to condense .

Throttling devices vary in design according to the type of service, and include the expansion valve , a capillary tube , and a liquid float valve . The purpose of the throttling device is simply to regulate the amount of liquid allowed to pass through it on its way to the evaporator or cooling coil .1
