Thoughts on the Movie 'Gua Sha'"I just finished watching the movie 'Gua Sha', and boy, did it give mea lot to think about! The film tells the story of a Chinese family living in the United States Xu Datong, the protagonist, is a hardworking and successful video game designer He and his wife, Jian Ning, have a lovely son, Dennis One day, Dennis has a fever and stomachache Due to the traditional Chinese practice of gua sha that Jian Ning performs on him to relieve his discomfort, it leads to a series of misunderstandings and troublesThe scene that really stuck with me was when the child welfare agency took Dennis away from his parents The look of utter helplessness and despair on Xu Datong's face was heartwrenching You could see the pain in his eyes as he struggled to understand why something that was considered normal and beneficial in his culture was seen as harmful in this foreign land I mean, come on! All he wanted was to take care of his sick son the best way he knew howAnd then there's the courtroom drama The lawyers arguing back and forth, trying to prove whether gua sha was a form of child abuse or not It was so intense! I was sitting on the edge of my seat, feeling anxious for the family The cultural gap was so wide and deep, it seemed almost impossible to bridgeAnother aspect that really hit home was the relationship between Xu Datong and his father The respect and love they had for each other, despite the generation gap and the different circumstances they found themselves in, was truly touching When Xu's father came to visit from China and brought with him the traditional values and practices, it created a beautiful yet sometimes conflicting dynamic within the familyThe movie also made me think about how we often judge things based on our own limited perspectives We assume that what we know and believe is the only right way, without taking the time to understand and appreciate other cultures It's like we're all living in our little bubbles, thinking the world outside is wrong if it doesn't match our ownThe performances of the actors were amazing They really brought the characters to life and made me feel for them I could feel Xu Datong's frustration and confusion, Jian Ning's worry and determination, and the innocence of little Dennis caught in the middle of it allOverall, 'Gua Sha' was not just a movie; it was a powerful reminder of the importance of cultural understanding and acceptance It showed me that we should be more openminded and willing to learn about different ways of life, instead of being quick to condemn what we don't understand It made me realize that in this globalized world, we need to break down the barriers of ignorance and prejudice to build a more inclusive and harmonious societySo, that's my take on 'Gua Sha' It was a wild ride of emotions and a real eyeopener I'm glad I watched it and got to experience this thoughtprovoking story。
We have to laugh every day in life, and none of us know what happens in the next second of life.(页眉可删)刮痧电影观后感中英刮痧电影观后感中英1《刮痧》这部影片是一部很优秀的作品,感人至深,催人泪下。
After watching the movie "Gua Sha," I was struck by the powerful message it conveyed about traditional Chinese medicine and the healing power of human connection. The film follows the story of a young woman named Lin who is struggling with chronic pain and emotional trauma. Desperate for relief, she turns to a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner who practices Gua Sha, a form of therapy that involves scraping the skin to promote blood flow and healing. At first skeptical, Lin gradually begins to experience the benefits of this ancient practice and finds solace in the compassionate care of her therapist. What struck me most about the film was the way it portrayed the importance of human connection in the healing process. Through the gentle touch of her therapist and the emotional support of her fellow patients, Lin is able to confront her pain and begin the journey towards healing. The film beautifully captures the transformative power of empathy and understanding, reminding us that true healing often comes from connecting with others on a deep and emotional level.Overall, "Gua Sha" is a poignant and thought-provoking film that highlights the ways in which traditional healing practices can provide both physical and emotional relief. It serves as a reminder of the importance of seeking out alternative forms of therapy and the power of human connection in overcoming pain and suffering.。
When I first saw this film’s name ,I considered it as a movie that told us something about Chinese traditional therapy treatment. However , after the movie , I realized guasha was just a symbol of the difference between Chinese culture and western culture , and there were many aspects we should have a deep consideration .At the beginning of the film , Xu Datong slaps his son Denis on his face before the cro wd , because Denis hit the son of Xu’s son and Xu just want to show the respect to his boss Quinlan , that time Quinlan feels puzzled and says“what a Chinese logic”. Of course , an American can never know a Chinese logic of interpersonal relationship which has been prolonged more than 2000 years . Chinese can wronged their children in order to maintain friendships and leader-member relation ,while American think everyone is equal and free .In addition , they can also never understand Chinese hit their children because of loving them . In America , people pay more attention to the right of children which can be seen from the law-beating children or leave them alone is illegal , but a Chinese old proverb says “ Spare the rod , spoil the child” .Another scene which makes me deliberate is that the lawyer vilifies Sun Wukong in A Journey to the West as a symbol of barbarism and violence in the court ,then Datong is enraged and then rushes to fight the lawyer . We all can know the reason ,because Sun Wukong is a hero on behalf of justice , representing Chinese traditional values and virtues .Guasha Treatment tells us that the key to avoid the conflict of different cultures is mutual understanding and tolerance.Great Culture difference between China and America【二】After I saw the film Guasha, I was astonished by the great different culture between China and America. In fact, we should find many interesting things in the conflict of these two nations. In Xu Datong’s family, his son Dennis is totally accepted the American culture. Datong and his wife know American rules and their way of thinking, but the still keep many Chinese habitats and Chinese thoughts. Datong’s father, however, is totally a Chinese. He didn’t know American rules at all even he is profound in China. We can see that after Dennis fight with the son of Datong’s boss, Datong hit Dennis. It’s totally a Chinese’s way. American don’t hit their child or they think it’s a kind of mistreat. Obviously, this action became one the proof that Datong mistreated Dennis when they were in the court. John acknowledged that Datong used to hit Dennis. He told truth but Datong was crazy about John “betrayed” him. Here is another aspect. In Chinese’s mind, friends should always help him even tell lie for him, while Americans distinct friendship and justice clearly. They wouldn’t tell lie in the court. After Datong lost, he vented his angry on John and want to resign for his self-respect. Because Chinese always treat “face” very important. Next the most interesting conflict appeared, Datong and John argued about why he hit Dennis. Datong said that he hit Dennis to show his respect to John, to save his face. John confused and cried what kind of twisted Chinese logic! Maybe it’s the most different thing between Chinese and American which Americans would never realize.Another point is in the court, Datong called John to be his lawyer. John thought it’s not comfortable because he is an interlecture property lawyer. He suggested Datong to find a qualified one. But Datong said John is his best friend and best lawyer, he should know how Datong love his son and John should surely help him. Here is one point. When somebody in the trouble, Chinese always find friends first whether he is professional or not. Friends would certainly he lp him. But Americans think that it’s better to find a stranger who can truly help him, rather than a good friend but can’t help him. Another point is after John told Datong he was not a family lawyer, but an interlecture property lawyer, Datong said that Dennis was his best creation, so it’s in John’s field. Actually, many Chinese hold the thought that child is parents’ property. They created their children and give birth to their children, so they can do everything to him, even hit them. However, Americans do not think so. From their perspective, children are equal to adults. They are not parents’ property. So they would never say the same thing as Datong. There are countless aspects show the difference between Chinese and American, such as logic, habitat, the way of thinking and act. We can see a lot of typical examples in Guasha. As a English major, I should learn more about intercultural communication between Chinese and American. Acceptance of their logic is a important way to learn English.。

1It's about assimilation into American culture, and not assimilation in an ”International” city, like SF or NY or LA or Chicago, but St. Louis, MO (actually shot there). Really great acting, interesting story.Gua Sha is a treatment in traditional oriental medicine in which a wooden board repeatedly slides across the patient's acupuncture acupressure massage points. It works in similar principles like that of acupuncture acupressure massage. This method would inevitably leave bruise on the skin, and the story begins here, when the visiting grandpa who does not speak any English used this traditional practice to treat the grandson when both son and daughter-in-law were at work.Sadly, in US, this is a story that repeats itself many times in the area where many oriental immigrants lives and all of these are due to simple misunderstanding between cultures.Gua Sha: Step-by-Step, by Arya Nielsen. If an acupuncturist is trained in Classical Chinese medicine, they will do this technique in their practice for pain, and for acute or chronic illness. 2Gua Sha is a movie about the differences between American and Chinese culture. Xu datong is a video games designer in St. Louis. When his father visits from China, he performs Gua Sha (a Chinese traditional treatment) on his grandson, which leaves bright red marks on the skin and causes a lawsuit of child abuse. In the court, Datong loses his mind so that finally he loses custody of his son.I think this scene is shocking and thought-provoking to most of the Chinese audiences. But the most impressing scene to me is the ending. Datong wants to see his son in Christmas eve, he has to climb a pipe to the ninth floor which his son lives. I think the pipe is not only a pipe, but also a gap, a deep gap between American and 5000-year Chinese culture. He wants to climb over the gap and he will never succeed, perhaps no Chinese people really could succeed. 3Gua Sha is a movie about the differences between American and Chinese culture. Da Tong's failures show his confusion about the differences between his original Chinese culture and his new American home. Even within his family there is conflict because Grandfather can't speak English and is excluded from many conversations because Mother(Wenli Jiang)wants only English spoken in her home for the benefit of her American born son. Da T ong and his wife are very well educated and understand that their child's best chances for succein America, and for him not to experience the same troubles they've had during the past 8 years, are to speak without an accent. They even go so far as to insist the boy use a fork and knife instead of chopsticks, even when it's obvious they are still eating Chinese style food, served in the normal way: communal dishes for the food and smaller, individual rice bowls for each person. Mother seems a bit inflexible in her insistence on being as American as possible, while Da Tong's cultural leanings are just as strongly Chinese, although not by conscious choice.Da Tong's love for his son is tested severely when Da Tong tries to balance it against respect for his boss. When Da Tong's son hits his boss' son, Da Tong insists on an apology that seems unnecessary and makes Da Tong look stubborn and uncaring. Da Tong gives his boy a light rap on the head when he refuses to apologize and the boy cries to his mother that the reason he hit his playmate was that the other boy called Da Tong stupid, one of many examples of doing the wrong thing to protect your family. The conflict arising from doing the wrong thing out of loveor respect for one's family or closest friends continues throughout the movie, and every way Da Tong turns, he finds failure and encounters both obvious and subtle forms of anti-Chinese racism.Even Chinese folklore about the Monkey King, Sun Wu Kong, that Da Tong incorporates into a video game he designed is used to provoke his pride when he's vulnerable and fearing for the loof his son. Da Tong is misunderstood by everyone, family, friend, and foe, even though he has only the best intentions, and he carries the responsibility quite heavily, ma-ki-ng one wrong turn after another.Gua Sha (Motivational model ) shows how a person's cultural beliefs are so deeply set within oneself that it is usually impossible to examine why you do most anything, from how you dreand talk to whom you love and respect and how you show it. The invisible nature of one's cultural beliefs also makes it difficult to impossible to explain yourself to others when questioned. Da Tong experiences an excruciatingly painful and difficult struggle while trying to protect his son, an ordeal that forces him to examine the validity of some of the most vital things he thought he knew about his identity, his Chinese culture, and the new American world he'd chosen as his home. The movie showed me how normal it is for people to look for ways that their culture is superior to others' and how the misunderstandings arising from different cultural perspectives can seem very large, but can be nullified with si-mp-le, 2-sided explanations when people are willing to listen. It appears this film is not readily available in the USA, but it's the best I've seen at highlighting the differences between American and Chinese culture. Parts of the movie's dialog areonly in Chinese and I've yet to find a DVD with English subtitles, although it's easy to get the gist of what's going on during those short passages. The credits are a combination of Chinese and English, holding true to the integration of both worlds. I've noticed some important roles are not credited here on IMDb, such as Judge Horowitz, who was played by Alexander Barton. 5Whe n I first saw this film’s name ,I considered it as a movie that told us something about Chinese traditional therapy treatment.
I was moved a lot after seeing the movie Guahsa. But putting away the moving plot,I think the film is trying to tell us someting about the misunderstandings and failures in crosscultural communication between Chinese and American people.Firstly, let's talk about Guasha. It is a popular folk treatment for certain illnesses by scraping the forehead, neck, and chest and back of the patient to cause congestion in the skin vessels to alleviate pain or inflammation in China. In this film, it re presented the traditional Chinese medical skills. But American doctor’s didn’t approve of it, because western medicine believes the experiments, they thought that Guasha Treatment wasn’t based on science. So, in the film, when the doctor found the bright red marks on the child’s back, they all considered that it was unacceptable. The next difference is the perception towards "mianzi". Xu was a Chinese immigrant in America, and he had been there for eight years. He had accepted many behaviors and views in American way, meanwhile, the traditional Chinese thoughts and values wre rooted in his mind deeply. In the film,Datong explained that he hit Denis because he wanted to give Mr.Quinlin “mianzi” while Mr.Quinlin thought that he shouldn’t hit Denis. But in American, people care more about facts rather than face. The third difference is Childhood Education. In China, it’s common for parents to hit the child if the child is naughty or do something wrong. They think that “I hit you because I love you” and they can tea ch and train their children according to their will.Chinese people take their children as part of their private property, the younger shouldn’t oppose to the older, because there’re strict ranks in the family. In America, children are independent and free. Parents need to educate them wisely and rationally rather than hit them. Certainly, parents should respect them and give their the rights to select their own futures. The fourth difference is the attitude towards friends. In the movie, Datong’s boss, and also his good friend, Mr.Quinlin, went to the court to be a witness to say something bad about Datong, Datong could not understand, he always treated Mr.Quinlin as a good friend, and he thought that Mr.Quinlin would help him, butthings turned out different ly. At last, he quit the job, because he didn’t want to work with someone who didn’t support him.But in American ,they tend to help their friends based on facts rather than affection.Lastly, I think "family love " between the two countries is quite different. American usually set up a series of laws and build up children"s welfare institution to protect our kids. But they seem to care less of the family love.It occur to me that when Datong's friend asked why Datong didn't tell the trueth that it was his father who did Guasha for little Daniel on the court, the Chinese woman said:''Because he is a Chinese!" Chinese awalys try their best to care and protect the olds and youngs and show greatest love for their family. Those are the main cultural conflicts in the movie. Therefore, we can say that the more we konw the differences in various culture, the better we could understand and respect people from different countries or backgrounds .。
As a viewer, I had the pleasure of watching the Chinese film "Guasha" or "Scraping" directed by Xu Zhanxiong. This film tells the story of a father and son who own a guasha clinic but struggle to keep it running due to financial difficulties and their estranged relationship. The father passes on his guasha skills to a young apprentice, who also becomes a vital character in the film. The film’s structure is simple but effective. It begins with a brief introduction of the characters and their daily lives, then the story continues to explore their circumstances and delves deeper into their relationships with one another. The climax of the story comes when the father is diagnosed with a serious illness. This event forces the father and son to confront their past and present issues as they attempt to salvage their relationship and the guasha clinic.I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of emotion and depth in each of the characters. As their stories unfolded, I found myself empathizing with each of them and was invested in their journeys. The film perfectly captured the complexities of family relationships and the importance of communication and understanding. The film also employs strong visual elements such as the beautiful scenery of rural China, the use of natural light, andwell-choreographed guasha scenes that are accompanied by soothing music. Every frame of the film is aesthetically pleasing, and it adds to the overall message of the film - the beauty of traditional Chinese healing practices and their importance in modern medicine. One of the most memorable moments of the movie was when the father said, "Guasha can cure more than just a cold or a fever." This resonated with me, and I felt that the film provided an opportunity to showcase the benefits of traditional medicine that are often overlooked. As I reflected on the film, I thought about my own relationship with my family and how a lack of communication and understanding can cause misunderstandings and rifts. It reminded me of the importance of taking the time to listen and communicate with each other. In conclusion, "Guasha" is a beautifully crafted film that captures the essence of traditional Chinese medicine, family relationships, and human connections. The excellent characters and music, coupled with the picturesque scenery, create an unforgettable cinematic experience. The film provides a reminder of the importance of preserving traditional practices in the rapidly changing world of modern medicine.。
Last year, when I have the public elective curse,ur teacher intrduces a film t us which is his favrite ne--GuaSha.At that time,I was just angry at freigner’s ignrance and deeply mved fr Datng’s lve fr his sn.At this time,I watch this film again frm different pint f view--the intercultural cmmunicatin.Cultural differences are the mst imprtant pint in the intercultural cmmunicatin. At the beginning f this film,Datng with his family is attending his wn victry banquet, his sn Dennis hits his friend Paul,Paul’s parents think that’s k,it’s just a fight between tw kids.Hwever,Datng and his wife Jenny have different reactins twards that situatin.Jenny is a wman wh is deeply affec ted by western thughts, she desn’t blame his sn.At first,Datng asks his sn t aplgize t his friend Paul, but Dennis refuses t d that.S Datng is very angry because he thinks that he makes his friend lses his face.Hence,Datng strikes Dennis in his face.Everyne including his wife are shcked. The western parents regard it as family vilence, while Datng as a traditinal Chinese parent thinks that beating is a sign f affectin and cursing is a sign f lve. What he has dne is t teach his sn t shwrespect t ther peple.Frm there,we can see the cultural differences between western parents and Chinese parents in treating their children.Frm my perspective,I think Datng is a cntradictin. He grws upin China, but immigrates t western cuntry later.S Datng is familiar with Chinese culture, meanwhile he is affected by western culture. He usually treats his sn by traditinal Chinese ways, but smetime he treats his sn like a freigner parent.Fr example,he can share secrets with his sn and respect his pinins.S,that is why I say Datng is a cntradictin. The highlight f this film is abut the debate n the hearing andthat is the mst bvius part f cultural differences in the intercultural cmmunicatin. The defense lawyer f Child Welfare Agency has the evidence t charge him f abusing his sn,they find a nurse wh is respnsible fr Jenny’s parturitin. She says that Datng chse t save his wife nt the child when Jenny is in danger during parturitin, and he even desn’t give the child chance t live.hwever,Datng hlds different pinin abut that.He argues that if his wife live, they can always have mre kids, just as a Chinese famus saying ges where there's life there's hpe.S we canknw the different cncept between Chinese peple and freigners. In this film, there are tw big misunderstandings abut Chinese culture. One is abut Jurney t the West and anther ne is abut Guasha. The defense lawyer says that Sun Wukng is representative f vilence, while the truth is Sun Wukng is a gd and hnest her and represents ur traditinal values and ethics.Anther misunderstanding isabut Guasha.Guasha is a traditinal Chinese medicine cure withut medical evidence.Hwever s it has becme the direct evidence f abusing child. The cnflicts in this film is the cnflicts between tw ttally different cultures. And it deserves us t pnder ver.Frm this film,we shuld knw that if we want t get knwledge f intercultural cmmunicatin, the first step is t understand cultural differences. Actually,in the beginning ,I d nt reckn GuaSha wrth a written cmment just accrding t the literal meaning I’ve gt.But my views n this mvie have been dramatically changed after I finishing it.In this passage,I will rganize my cmments in three parts:1.the summary f this mvie.2.the differences between Chinese and English culture reflected in this mvie.clusin.Sectin1:GuaSha shapes a vivid image f a man whse name is DaTngxu. He is a man with a beautiful and virtuus wife .What’s mre ,he has a happy family.Hwever, everything has changed since an unexpected lawsuit came t him which is triggered by the Chinese traditinal medical treatment---GuaSha,which leads t the separatin between DaTng and his wife as well as his family. The plt then is expanded frm this wrd…Sectin2:There are s many differences in tw cultures reflected in this mvie.Firstly, the way peple think r treat abut sme rituals.Fr example ,during the party,DaTng insists that he hits his sn ut f the respect fr Jhn,while Jhn cnsiders it a rude behaviur twards Danis. And t sme extent,DaTng breaches the law.Secndly, frm the way they have dinner ,we can see their living styles are different frmurs. They use frks and knives ,but we use chpsticks. Then,in western cuntries, everything is judged accrding t prf. When they handle smething, they prefer t appeal t the law while Chinese are inclined t tackle these difficulties with their wneffrts.Next,fr lve ,DaTng is advised t tell the truth that itis his father wh des GuaSha treatment t Danis. But DaTng just keeps silent.Chinese emphasize filial affectin twards the senir. In cntrast ,westerners just want t seek the truth. At last, the cgnitin f genuine medical treatment is f difference.Traditinal Chinese medical treatment is assumed t be fake treatment in western cuntries.(Here are sme extracts frm the mvie:1.It’s nt a right thing t hit a child.Smetimes it may break the law.2.T hit smebdy means t lve smebdy.3.In China ,we use chpsticks, but here yu use frks.4.It is illegal fr parents t leave their children at hme alne.5.GuaSha is a traditinal Chinese medical treatment.6.There isn’t any written prf can prve GuaSha is a real treatment.7.Husband desn’t care abut his sn if he is absent when his sn is brn.8.T keep the mther alive is mre imprtant than the sn’s life.9.Hit his wn sn t shw the respect fr his bss.10.It’s necessary t tell the truth.11.Because he is a Chinese,he shuld be filial.12.Better early than late if yu will take the plane.)Cnclusin:In this mvie ,what strikes me mst is the lve that DaTng has twards his sn and his father.Abslutely,DaTng is a tugh and filial man.In rder t get his sn back,he ignres any punishments frm the law…Apparently,if there is any difference still existing amng different cultures, the pssibility f melting peple’s attitudes tgether is smewhat f difficulty.Maybe, clliding with ther cultures is just the apprpriate way fr cultures t assimilate int each ther.。

My Reaction to Gua Sha TreatmentWhen I was a freshman in college I watched the film Gua Sha Treatment for the first time, now I am a junior student and I come back to review the movie from a multicultural aspect, I have many different feelings after watching the film again. At the beginning of the film, XuDatong is given an award and later he delivers a speech。
What makes me impressed most is in his speech he says “one day I will become one of you, a truly successful American, today this award proved that America is a true land of opportunity and I am the living proof of that.” At that moment Xu thinks he has realized his American Dream totally with his lovingly wife and adorable son. However, I think it is ironical that to make a speech like that and I assume it is made on purpose to hind a clue for the story’s development. How many non —American people have such a beautiful American dream? One of my classmate studies in American now and before he went aboard he told me his American dream is he can stand at the top of the New York. To be honest, I also dream that one day I can get the Green Card living there happily and successfully maybe working at the Wall Street. When Xu gets the award he thinks he entirely melted in the melting pot neglecting the multicultural obstruct, later the plot goes against the way he thinks。

Chinese immigrants struggle to hold onto their American dream after the husband's father (Xu Zhu) comes for a visit from mainland China and gives a si-mp-le Chinese Medicine therapy called Gua Sha to his grandson.Da Tong (Tony Leung Ka Fai) is the father who is trying to integrate his Chinese cultural beliefs into his daily American reality, especially when dealing with his bo(Hollis Huston) and best friend, who is too quick to believe the worst about Da Tong's treatment of his son, Dennis. Da Tong's failures show his confusion about the differences between his original Chinese culture and his new American home. Even within his family there is conflict because Grandfather can't speak English and is excluded from many conversations because Mother (Wenli Jiang) wants only English spoken in her home for the benefit of her American born son. Da Tong and his wife are very well educated and understand that their child's best chances for succein America, and for him not to experience the same troubles they've had during the past 8 years, are to speak without an accent. They even go so far as to insist the boy use a fork and knife instead of chopsticks, even when it's obvious they are still eating Chinese style food, served in the normal way: communal dishes for the food and smaller, individual rice bowls for each person. Mother seems a bit inflexible in her insistence on being as American aspossible, while Da Tong's cultural leanings are just as strongly Chinese, although not by conscious choice.Da Tong's love for his son is tested severely when Da Tong tries to balance it against respect for his boss. The conflict arising from doing the wrong thing out of love or respect for one's family or closest friends continues throughout the movie, and every way Da Tong turns, he finds failure and encounters both obvious and subtle forms of anti-Chinese racism. Even Chinese folklore about the Monkey King, Sun Wu Kong, that Da Tong incorporates into a video game he designed is used to provoke his pride when he's vulnerable and fearing for the loof his son. Da Tong is misunderstood by everyone, family, friend, and foe, even though he has only the best intentions, and he carries the responsibility quite heavily, ma-ki-ng one wrong turn after another.Gua Sha (The Treatment) shows how a person's cultural beliefs are so deeply set within oneself that it is usually impossible to examine why you do most anything, from how you dreand talk to whom you love and respect and how you show it. The invisible nature of one's cultural beliefs also makes it difficult to impossible to explain yourself to others when questioned. Da Tong experiences an excruciatingly painful and difficult struggle while trying to protect his son, an ordeal that forces him toexamine the validity of some of the most vital things he thought he knew about his identity, his Chinese culture, and the new American world he'd chosen as his home. Parts of the movie's dialog are only in Chinese and I've yet to find a DVD with English subtitles, although it's easy to get the gist of what's going on during those short passages. The credits are a combination of Chinese and English, holding true to the integration of both worlds. I've noticed some important roles are not credited here on IMDb, such as Judge Horowitz, who was played by Alexander Barton。

East meets WestImpression On the Film Gua Sha Treatment Gua Sha Treatment is a film directed by Zheng Xiaolong in 2001, in which Liang Jiahui and Jiang Wenli are the main performers. The major contradiction shown in the film directly presents the distinguished differences between Chinese and American cultures. I’d like to share my own ideas based on the overview of the entire movie. After years of hard work in the area of video game, Xu Datong, a Chinese immigrant to the US, has finally achieved success as an outstanding designer. With his promising career and loving family, he feels he has become a true American. One day, Datong’s father comes over from China and uses a traditional Chinese medical technique, called GuaSha, to treat Datong`s son, Dennis. Unexpectedly, an American doctor thinks the bruises on Dennis’ back left by the GuaSha treatment are signs of child abuse, the doctor called the Children's Rights Protection Centre take Dennis to stay away from his families . But for the grandfather of Dennis can get the Green Card, so Datong is charged with the behavior and the finger is pointed at him. He must prove that the scraping is a treatment to reunite his son and family. The Treatment is a true portrayal of the enormous gulfs between cultures and their possible repercussion between cultures and their possiblerepercussions.Chinese culture has thousands of years’ history and forms its own unique ethic. Caring for the youngs, ancestor worship and the proliferation of offspring, which also forms our Chinese characteristic "playing a pro, yelled at love." The traditional concept, people only grow up on our land can really understand its meanings. In the film Da Tong's son Dennis does n’t understand that, so he and his playmates always have contradictions. This is the difference between Chinese and Western in Family Ethics. In medicine there is another difference, westerners are difficult to understand Chinese scraping therapy. In court, lawyers and judges are confused when it comes to traditional Chinese medicine. In fact, even Chinese, a lot of people do not really understand traditional Chinese medicine theory of Yin and Yang, the five elements, meridians. The film also allows us to think about the prospect of Chinese medicine. In today's quick success, if we want to rejuvenate our traditional Chinese medicine, especially to win widespread acceptance in the world, we should try our best to communicate with western world! Fortunately, Chinese medicine’s efficacy of the treatment has gotten a lot of people's attention, it has gradually been accepted.Datong’s boss went to court to give his hands to Datong, but when he sees the pictures on the result of Dennis’s wounds, he doesn’t say anything . This also caused strong resentment ofDatong , and he thinks the boss is not a friend and resigns from his company and even says "Dao bu tong bu xiang wei mou." (Don't attempt to work with people whose way is not your way.) This is a point we should think. Indeed, in our lives, we will give more or less help because of the relationship closeness. But Datong's boss isn’t, when he thinks Datong abused child, he doesn’t help his defense longer. But when he learns from Father that GuaSha is a traditional Chinese medicine therapy, he goes to China to look for proofs, to let Datong and his families’reunion. Shouldn’t we cherish this friendship? In this story, we can see that the concept of rule of law in Europe deeply rooted, and the trace of Chinese rule of man. When it comes to education, in the opening celebration held for Datong , Dennis and boss’s son has an argument, Datong asks Dennis to apologize to the boss's son, Dennis did not follow the ask, so Dennis is beaten. Later, his boss finds it hard to understand. Chinese people emphasize others’ minding, westerners stress own minding. The two persons coming from two different culture areas have completely different concepts. In the film, the nurse finds a small scar on the back of Dennis and calls the report immediately , others appears in court to testify in order to make child get away from abuse , because they think it is good for the child. We can think in China, for self-interest, who will do this thing to offend people?AS far as I am concerned temper, on trial , the lawyer ofthe Children's Rights Protection Centre misinterpreted in the classic "Journey to the West" the spirit of the Monkey King in order to win the lawsuit . And finally he angers Xu Datong and lets this thing go a lawsuit. In this case, Chinese temper just falls into the trap of American coolness. Seeing Xu Datong is exasperated and irrational performance, all audience may sympathized deeply , while disgusted the lawyer. But in real life, anger often does not help, it will only make things worse. Anger is a double-edged sword, so that people who love their injuries, but also to his injury. Perhaps, a person is only good at controlling his anger, is sensible with what is happening, is a real mature right attitude.Cross-culture understanding is easily noticeable, admired, however, difficult to achieve, especially when we are situated in occasions that the culture differences are definitely apparent. But we still look forward to fair love that is able to accept different ideas result from various cultures. When I wrote the article, I found that "Gua Sha" had translated into English as “scraping”, which represented available communication between China and the west. Faced with the persistent improvement, the acceptance of cultural differences is no more a distant dream.。
As an audience member, I recently had the opportunity to watch the Chinese film "Guasha" and would like to share my thoughts and feelings about this unique and captivating production. From the moment the film began, I was immediately drawn in by the stunning cinematography and compelling storyline."Guasha" is a Chinese word that translates to "scraping." It is a traditional Chinese medical treatment that involves using a scraper to remove toxins and facilitate healing. The film follows the story of a young woman named Xinyi who becomes fascinated with this ancient healing practice and decides to learn more about it.Throughout the film, we see Xinyi's journey as she delves deeper into the world of Guasha and discovers its powerful healing properties. Along the way, she encounters a wide range of people who have their own experiences with Guasha, including a terminally ill patient, a professional athlete, and a skeptical doctor. One of the things that impressed me most about "Guasha" was the way it seamlessly blended elements of traditional Chinese culture with modern-day medicine. The film did an excellent jobof showing how Guasha can be used in conjunction with other forms of treatment to help improve patient outcomes.I also appreciated the way the film highlighted the importance of holistic healing and taking a more natural approach to healthcare. It was refreshing to see a film that encouraged viewers to embrace non-traditional forms of healing and explore alternative methods of treatment. The cinematography in "Guasha" was absolutely breathtaking. The filmmakers did an excellent job of capturing the beauty and serenity of the natural world, which added an extra layer of depth and meaning to the film. One scene that particularly stood out to me was when Xinyi was performing Guasha on an elderly patient. As she scraped gently at the woman's skin, the camera zoomed in on thepatient's face, showing the emotions flickering across her features as she began to relax and feel the healing effects of the treatment. It was a beautiful moment that perfectly captured the essence of the film.Another aspect of "Guasha" that I enjoyed was the music. The film featured a hauntingly beautiful soundtrack that perfectly complemented the on-screen action. At times, the music was subtle and understated, while at other times it swelled to a crescendo, adding an extra layer of drama and emotion to the film.Overall, I thought "Guasha" was an incredibly powerful and thought-provoking film that left me feeling inspired and uplifted. It was a beautiful portrayal of the healing power of traditional Chinese medicine and a reminder of the importance of taking a more holistic approach to healthcare. From a learning and inspiration standpoint, the most important thing I took away from "Guasha" was the importance of keeping an open mind and being willing to explore alternative forms of healing. While modern medicine has certainly made incredible advances over the past century, there is still much we can learn from traditional healing practices like Guasha. In conclusion, I would highly recommend "Guasha" to anyone who is interested in alternative forms of healing, traditional Chinese medicine, or simply looking for a beautiful and engaging film that will leave them feeling inspired and uplifted. The film's powerful message, stunning visuals, and haunting musical score combine to create a truly unforgettable viewing experience.。
Last year, when I have the public elective course, our teacher introduces a film to us which is his favorite one--GuaSha.At that time,I was just angry at foreigner’s ignorance and deeply moved for Datong’s love for his son.At this time,I watch this film again from different point of view--the intercultural communication.Cultural differences are the most important point in the intercultural communication. At the beginning of this film,Datong with his family is attending his own victory b anquet, his son Dennis hits his friend Paul,Paul’s parents think that’s ok,it’s just a fight between two kids. However,Datong and his wife Jenny have different reactions towards that situation.Jenny is a woman who is deeply affected by western thoughts, she d oesn’t blame his son.At first,Datong asks his son to apologize to his friend Paul, but Dennis refuses to do that.So Datong is very angry because he thinks that he makes his friend loses his face.Hence,Datong strikes Dennis in his face.Everyoneincluding his wife are shocked. The western parents regard it as family violence, while Datong as a traditional Chinese parent thinks that beating is a sign of affection and cursing is a sign of love. What he has done is to teach his son to show respect to other people. From there,we can see the cultural differences between western parents and Chinese parents in treating their children. From my perspective,I think Datong is a contradiction. He grows upin China, but immigrates to western country later. So Datong is familiar with Chinese culture, meanwhile he is affected by western culture. He usually treats his son by traditional Chinese ways, but sometime he treats his son like a foreigner parent. For example,he can share secrets with his son and respect his opinions. So,that is why I say Datong is a contradiction. The highlight of this film is about the debate on the hearing andthat is the most obvious part of cultural differences in the intercultural communication. The defense lawyer ofChild Welfare Agency has the evidence to charge him of abusing his son, they find a nurse who is responsible for Jenny’s parturition. She says that Datong choose to save his wife not the child when Jenny is in danger during parturition, and he even doesn’t give the child chance to live.however,Datong holds different opinion about that.He argues that if his wife live, they can always have more kids, just as a Chinese famous saying goes where there’s life there’s hope.So we can know the different concept between Chinese people and foreigners. In this film, there are two big misunderstandings about Chinese culture. One is about Journey to the West and another one is about Guasha. The defense lawyer says that Sun Wukong is representative of violence, while the truth is Sun Wukong is a good and honest hero and represents our traditional values and ethics.Another misunderstanding isabout Guasha.Guasha is a traditional Chinese medicine cure without medical evidence. However s it has become the direct evidence of abusing child. The conflicts in this film is the conflicts between two totally differentcultures. And it deserves us to ponder over. From this film,we should know that if we want to get knowledge of intercultural communication, the first step is to understand cultural differences. Actually, in the beginning ,I do not reckon GuaSha worth a written comment just according to the literal meaning I’ve got. But my views on this movie have been dramatically changed after I finishing it. In this passage,I will organize my comments in three parts:1. the summary of this movie.2. the differences between Chinese and English culture reflected in this movie.3. Conclusion.Section1: GuaSha shapes a vivid image of a man whose name is DaTongxu. He is a man with a beautiful and virtuous wife .What’s more ,he has a hap py family. However, everything has changed since an unexpected lawsuit came to him which is triggered by the Chinese traditional medical treatment---GuaSha, which leads to the separation betweenDaTong and his wife as well as his family. The plot then is e xpanded from this word…Section2: There are so many differences in two cultures reflected in this movie. Firstly, the way people think or treat about some rituals. For example ,during the party, DaTong insists that he hits his son out of the respect for John, while John considers it a rude behaviour towards Danis. And to some extent, DaTong breaches the law. Secondly, from the way they have dinner ,we can see their living styles are different fromours. They use forks and knives ,but we use chopsticks. Then, in western countries, everything is judged according to proof. When they handle something, they prefer to appeal to the law while Chinese are inclined to tackle these difficulties with their own efforts. Next, for love , DaTong is advised to tell the truth that it is his father who does GuaSha treatment to Danis. But DaTong just keeps silent. Chinese emphasize filial affection towards the senior. In contrast ,westerners just want to seek the truth. At last, the cognition of genuine medical treatment is ofdifference. Traditional Chinese medical treatment is assumed to be fake treatment in western countries.(Here are some extracts from the movie:1. It’s not a right thing to hit a child. Sometimes it may break the law.2. To hit somebody means to love somebody.3. In China ,we use chopsticks, but here you use forks.4. It is illegal for parents to leave their children at home alone.5. GuaSha is a traditional Chinese medical treatment.6. There isn’t any written proof can pro ve GuaSha isa real treatment.7. Husband doesn’t care about his son if he is absent when his son is born.8. To keep the mother alive is more important than the son’s life.9. Hit his own son to show the respect for his boss.10. It’s necessary to tell th e truth.11. Because he is a Chinese, he should be filial.12. Better early than late if you will take the plane. )Conclusion:In this movie ,what strikes me most is the love that DaTong has towards his son and his father. Absolutely, DaTong is a tough and filial man. In order to get his son back, he ignores any punishments from the law… Apparently, if there is any difference still existing among different cultures, the possibility of melting people’s attitudes together is somewhat of difficulty. Maybe, colliding with other cultures is just the appropriate way for cultures to assimilate into each other.。
Film Review: Gua Sha ExperienceAs an avid moviegoer and a great enthusiast of various cultural experiences, I recently had the opportunity to watch a unique film titled "Gua Sha". This Chinese film, directed by a talented director, showcased the ancient traditional practice of "Gua Sha", also known as scraping therapy. The film highlighted the physical and emotional journey of the main character, ultimately providing a thought-provoking and enlightening experience. The film begins with a glimpse into the life of the protagonist, a diligent and ambitious young woman named Xia. Her fast-paced lifestyle and constant pressure cause her to reach a breaking point, both physically and mentally. In search of a solution, she turns to her grandmother, who suggests trying Gua Sha as a form of healing. Curious yet skeptical, Xia embarks on a journey that not only rejuvenates her body but also transforms her perception of life. The cinematography of "Gua Sha" is visually captivating, capturing the essence of both urban landscapes and the serene countryside. The director effectively uses contrasting scenery to symbolize the stark contrast between Xia's hectic city life and the tranquility she seeks. The film's color palette transitions from muted tones to vibrant hues as Xia's transformation progresses, visually reflecting her inner journey. The sound design and musical score in "Gua Sha" are impeccably crafted. The audience is enveloped by a combination of ambient sounds, subtle yetpowerful classical music, and the rhythmic scraping sounds of the Gua Sha therapy itself. These elements create an immersive experience that heightens the emotional connection with Xia's character and her transformative process. The pacing of the film is deliberate, allowing the audience to become fully engaged with Xia's journey. Through a combination of flashbacks, dream sequences, and present-day scenes, the director effectively conveys Xia's emotional and physical struggles, as well as her eventual triumph. The narrative unfolds in a way that captures the viewer's attention while providing moments of reflection and introspection. One of the most captivating aspects of "Gua Sha" is the exceptional performances by the cast. Xia's character is portrayed brilliantly by a talented actress who effectively conveys both vulnerability and resilience. The supporting cast, including Xia's grandmother, friends, and Gua Sha practitioners, adds depth and authenticity to the film, making the overall story more relatable and impactful. The central theme of "Gua Sha" revolves around the importance of balance and self-care. As Xia embraces the ancient practice of Gua Sha, she discovers the healing power of self-love and acceptance. Through the scraping therapy, she not only revitalizes her physical body but also rekindles her passion for life. The film beautifully encapsulates the idea that true health and well-being cannot be achieved without nourishing the mind, body, and spirit holistically.Furthermore, "Gua Sha" subtly touches upon the concept of intergenerational wisdom and the value of cultural heritage. Xia'sgrandmother serves as a guide and mentor throughout her journey, imparting her knowledge and experience. The film emphasizes the importance of preserving and cherishing traditional practices, which not only offer physical healing but also connect individuals to their roots and ancestry. In conclusion, "Gua Sha" is a captivating film that explores the transformative power of an ancient healing practice. Its visually stunning cinematography, exceptional performances, and thought-provoking narrative make it a must-watch for those seeking meaningful and introspective cinematic experiences. Through Xia's journey, the audience is reminded of the importance of self-care, holistic healing, and the wisdom of our ancestors. "Gua Sha" serves as a poignant reminder that true transformation can arise from embracing one's inner self, transcending cultures and boundaries in the process.。
Class Number: Number: Name:A Review of“The Treatment”Movie“The Treatment”was directed by Zheng Xiaolong.Chinese famous actor Liang Jiahui was the hero, and his partner is Jiang Wenli. The story center on the difference between Chinese Culture and America Culture. And the main thread of the movie is the misconception about the“ Gua sha treatment”.It reflects the conflicts caused by the cultural differences between the east and west ,which lead chinese into all kinds of troubles, but finally, sincere and love solve all the affairs well. The movie is shocking and thought-provoking to me,indeed i really felt angry when i saw the scene that the American lawyer defame the classic——and the personification of justice Sun Wukong.China is a country with 5000 years of civilization,so no one could stand the insult to our culture.Xu of course gets irritated, but the patriotism be used by the lawyer.Xu finally lose the case, the judge announce that Xu was not allowed to meet with his son and deprive the his custody. Let us look the first scene at the begining of the movie:Xu Datong was rewarded because his achievement on game development. His family was perfection and h is career was successful,“one day I will become one of you,a truly successful American, today this award proved that America is a true land of opportunity and I am the living proof of that”he said proudly. But not everything goes perfectly,at the dinner party,Xu hit his son Denis because Denis hit his boss's son.Xu's boss of course could not understand the behaviour, but Xu said that he hit his son was to show the respect to his boss. And from the American's perspective,it wasridiculous, they thought that everyone is equal and hit children to show respect to others is totally inconceivable.Because of the difference between west and east culture,Xu lose his job.You may think it's terrible, but the more incredible thing is that Gua sha treatment became the proof of child abuse.Xu Datong was abused,he and his wife did every efforts to win the case, but there is a gulf between east and west culture, and to win the case means to leap over the gulf. It's tough and unbelievable. Xu lose his job and friends. Not only that ,his father had to come back to China and his family was ripped apart. All the shock made Xu and his wife feel despair, the most poignant thing was his son know nothing about what was happened and eager to see Xu.In order to find out the truth of the matter, the lawyer experience the gua sha treatment personally, which became the turning point of the story. On Christmas eve, when Xu faced danger to climbed on the pipes to see his son,the lawyer also brought a good news:Xu could come back to home aboveboard.I was moved by the love between father and son,not only Xu Datong and Denis, but also Xu's father and he.Chinese Culture discreet inherit,in the movie i saw the inherit of love.Family is our harbour, parents are our supporters. They devoted countless love to us ,you can't imagine what impossible things they will do for us.So Chinese always pay great attention to Filial piety. Without first-hand experience, you will never know the influence of the culture conflict between east and west. But the movie vivid display the contradiction,it must be a shock to Chinese. At the same time,it can promote the exchange of oriental and occidental cultures. The whole story is easy to understand but is profound. For me,it becomes more vital to learn about the cultureamong all over the world.Because you never know what kind of culture you will face one day. Not FinishedAfter watching the movie Gua Sha which about the differences between American and Chinese culture .I do more believe that there are a lot of differences among distinct countries ,such as language, the way of expressing love and interacting with other people, interpersonal relationship, family values and so forth. At the beginning of this movie, when the leading actor Xu Datong wins a prize then he says, he loves America and America is an place fills with opportunities .However ,misfortune may be an actual blessing, one day, his five-year-old child called Denis gets a fever, Xu Datong's father does not know the introduction of the medicine so he does Gua Sha on his grandson, which leaves red marks on skin and in hospital causes a lawsuit of child abuse. In court, Xu Datong explains clearly about Gua Sha is just a Chinese traditional treatment, while these Americans does not know this kind of treatment.Meanwhile confronting many distorted allegations, he loses his temple. As a result, he is deprived of Denis’s custody. He is forbidden to meet Denis.Because of cultural differences. Xu Datong's father returns to China. For Denis’s custody , Xu Datong resigns his job,he loses his peaceful family. It reflects the cultural shock in foreign country. Finally the couple overcome the obstacles through their efforts. It also should be reminded that the scene:when the hero Xu Datong explains to his son he beats his son for love, and his son does what his father dose to his friends and talks with his father he loves his friend.Yes,we Chinese do believe it .But Americanmay not understand it as we do not know why they emphasize so much on privacy.Maybe as the scene Xu Datong explains he beats his son for showing face to his superior who does not understand the the way of expressing love and interacting with other people and interpersonal relationship. So do we.To conclude,it is no need to worry the cultural differences and cultural shock as long as we deal with it appropriately.Although there are some difficulties, we should remember that doing as the Romans do and many things will be easy.。

It's about assimilation into American culture, and not assimilation in an ”International” city, like SF or NY or LA or Chicago, but St。Louis,MO (actually shot there)。Really great acting, interesting story。
I have never imagined that I would write a film review in English。Because when referring to feeling and culture,I can hardly express my whole idea in Chinese,I have never imagined that I would write a film review in English。Because when referring to feeling and culture,I can hardly express my whole idea in Chinese。
Sadly,in US,this is a story that repeats itself many times in the area where many oriental immigrants lives and all of these are due to simple misunderstanding between cultures。Gua Sha: Step-by-Step,by Arya Nielsen。If an acupuncturist is trained in Classical Chinese medicine, they will do this technique in their practice for pain, and for acute or chronic illness。

Gua Sha is a treatment in traditional oriental medicine in which a wooden board repeatedly slides across the patient's acupuncture acupressure massage points。It works in similar principles like that of acupuncture acupressure massage。This method would inevitably leave bruise on the skin, and the story
