AAmsterdam, the capital and most populous city in the Netherlands, is one of the most popular travel destinations in the world, famous for its beautiful canals, top art museum, cycling culture, and Red Light District. Here are some of the key points to remember as you plan your trip to Amsterdam.Must-See AttractionsMost visitors begin their Amsterdam adventure in the Old Centre, which is full of traditional architecture, shopping centers, and coffee shops. You’ll also want to check out Amsterdam’s Museum Quarter in the South District, which is great for shopping at the Albert Cuyp Market and having a picnic in the Vondelpark. The top museums to visit are the Rijksmusuem, the Ann Frank House, and the Van Gogh Museum. The Canal Ring is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was originally built to attract wealthy home owners and is a popular place for celebrity spotting and nightlife today.TransportationTravelers should be aware that Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is one of the busiest airports in the world. This airport is located about 15 kilometers southwest of city center. You can catch a train from Schiphol to Amsterdam Central Station, which has many connecting routes. It’s typically not a good idea to drive a car to the city center because traffic is heavy and parking is difficult to find. Cycling is incredibly popular here, and it’s easy to find cheap bike rentals around town. Amsterdam has a flat terrain(地形) and is a great city to explore on foot.Money Saving TipsUnless you really want to see the tulips(郁金香) blooming, avoid booking betweenmid-March and mid-May. This is when hotel and flight prices rise.Look for accommodations in Amsterdam’s South District, where rates are generallycheaper than in the city center.Buy train tickets at the machine instead of the counter to save a bit of money.Instead of hiring a tour guide, hop on a canal boat. They’re inexpensive andwill give you a unique point of view of the city.Check out our homepage to view price comparisons for flights, hotels, and rentalcars before you book.1.Which attraction was built with the original purpose of drawing the rich?A. Albert Cuyp Market.B. The Ann Frank House.C. The Van Gogh Museum.D. The Canal Ring.2. Which means of transportation is not advisable in Amsterdam according to thepassage?A. The plane.B. The train.C. The car.D. The bike.3. Which way can help visitors save money in Amsterdam?A .Seeing the tulips blooming in spring. B. Avoiding accommodating downtown.C. Buying car tickets at the machine.D. Hiring a local tour guide.BTwelve years ago, a young traveler named Rhett Butler from San Francisco,California, visited the Sabah rainforest on Malaysian Borneo. In one area of therainforest, he watched a bird flying through the trees. The beautiful sight left quitean impression on him. But weeks later, back home, Rhett Butler got the news that treeshad been cut down in the area he visited. That experience led Rhett Butler to begin writing a book about rainforests andthreats to their existence. But he did not publish the book. Instead, in 1999, heused his research for the book to create a website. The site is Mongabay. Com. Hispurpose was to inform the public about tropical rainforests. But the subject quicklydeveloped. As a former businessman, he became a respected writer of science andenvironmental stories. The popularity of Mongabay. Com attracted advertisers. Small ads on the site pay for its operations. Mongabay. Com has grown and led to other sites. For example, there is a site for children which is called kids. Mongabay. Com. Another one, WildMadangascar. Org, is all about the island nation that Rhett Butler calls his favorite place. To keep his website going, he travels around the world on several major trips each year. His working tools are a laptop computer, cameras and sometimes diving equipment. He often calls on experts for information. For example, he interviewed Alison Jolly, a top experts on lemurs(狐猴). He interviewed Rodney Jackson, a biologist who established the Snow Leopard Conservancy.Stories like these have made Mongabay a favorite place on the Internet for researchers, students and teachers. In April, Time. Com named it one of the fifteen top climate and environment websites in the world.4. What’s the main idea of the passage?A. Rhett Butler and his website.B. Rainforest on Malaysian Borneo.C. How Rhett Butler protected rare animals.D. How Rhett Butler made his website popular.5. Rhett Butler didn’t publish his book about rainforests because _______.A. making websites earns more money than writing booksB. he didn’t want to become a writerC. the book was not about rainforest protectionD. he wanted to use the information to create a website6. Which of the followings is NOT true about the Mongabay. Com?A. It was set up in 1999.B. It attracted many advertisers.C. At least two related websites grew from it.D. Rhett Butler made a lot of money from it.7. To keep his website going, Rhett Butler ________.A. kept visiting the rainforestB. traveled around and interviewed expertsC. raised rare snow leopardsD. made a great number of advertisementsCMy daughter had a bullying(欺凌) problem a couple of years ago. She kept receiving rude text messages from kids at school. Dealing with school bullying wasn’t easy, but I finally ended it. When you realize things are serious, it is no time to be silent. If your kids are also receiving such text messages, take them directly to the headmaster and show him. Describe to him how it is affecting your kids. Tell him you will not tolerate it and that you want him to put an end to it now.School bullying is a dangerous and serious issue these days .and any good headmaster w ill take your charges seriously. He will probably address the issues with the parents. If they are crappy(糟糕的)parents, then they may do nothing to their child. You may have to repeat this process several times, but you need to keep a check on those text messages and don’t allow your child to delete them .Now it is time to draw your child close and take care of him/her, because he/she needs it. My daughter did not like me being involved either, but you are the only person your kid can depend on to solve this problem, so do it and mean business. Always be polite, but straight forward . The headmaster and parents must know you mean business. If repeated meetings with the headmaster (and parents , if he allows it ) do not work, then I would consider hiring a lawyer. That will send the message loud and clear. When you are talking about financial loss, most parents will stand up and take notice and act to keep their kids under control!I know a lawyer is a big expense and not something you do lightly, but when bad things like school bullying are happening to your children, you must act and act quickly.8.Which of the foll owing can replace the underlined word “tolerate” in Paragraph 2?A. mindB. discussC. standD. affect9. What does the author suggest about school bullying in Paragraph 4?A. Children can deal with it themselves.B. Not all bullying problems can be solved.C. Parents should fully respect kids’ thoughts.D. It’s necessary for parents to be involved in it.10. What should parents do if the headmaster fails to solve the bullying problem?A.Ask a lawyer for help.B. Put your child under your care.C. Meet the bullies in person.D. Ask the parents of the bullies for money.11. Why does the author write the text?A. To seek help .B. To offer advice.C. To ask for advice.D. To share his experience.DRobot vacuum cleaners aren’t a new concept, having been around for more than 15 years, but they have become greatly more helpful since the days of catching on rug hairs, running out of battery mid-clean and forgetting where they were. But the next generation of disc-shaped floor-cleaners could bring some of the most important upgrades yet, including being more autonomous than ever and knowing exactly where they are in your home and where you need them to be.iRobot’s latest Roombas, the i7 and i7+, shown off at a recent event in Tokyo, will be arriving in Australia in the coming months. Their key new feature: persistent mapping of your home. The ability to map not only makes the robot quicker and more efficient, but lets it integrate(融入) more closely with smart homes. Once it’s explored your house a few times, the i7 will present you with a map via its smart phone app, which Angle says tends to be “maybe 80 per cent right”.As the robot travels around cleaning up dust, it draws a floor plan and uses a sensor(传感器) to identify landmarks and objects. Unlike previous models, the i7 remembers this information, meaning it will learn the most efficient paths around your home over time.If you change the layout of your furniture, it will adapt the existing map rather than having to create a whole new one and if you have a multi-storey house, it simplymakes multiple maps, and uses its learned landmarks to determine which floor it’s on (you’ll still need to carry it up the stairs).iRobot’s CEO and founder Colin Angle says the i7 class, the company’s 10th generation Roomba, is the robot he’s always wanted to build; capable of keeping a home’s floors clean with virtually no user input needed.“This robot has 30 times the processing power of its former generation,” he says. “So we’re fully into a situation today where we can be running machine learning and visual object recognition technology and very advanced algorithms(演算法; 运算法则) on the robot, to allow it to continue to work on increasingly complicated code.”12.According to the passage the robot cleaners invented 15 years ago could ______.A. catch on the hairs on the rugB. charge the battery mid-cleanC. draw the map of the homeD. know their exact home position13. The underlined word “layout” in Paragraph 5 can be replaced by ______.A. arrangementB. designC. styleD. size14. Which of the following statements about the i7 and i7+ is true?A. i7 remembers the identified landmarks like former models.B. They can enter the room upstairs themselves and clean it.C. They can do better in math than the previous cleaners.D.i7 can present a map exactly via its smart phone app.15. What can be the best title of the passage?A. Technologies in the Cleaner.B. The Future of iRobots.C. The Development of iRobots.D. The Latest Robot Cleaner.

AThe reason why some people are willing to pay big money for the chance to get in touch with their inner child in a proper environment is that they think it is good to do so from time to time . A Brooklyn-based adult preschool is charging customers between $333 and $999 for the chance to act like a kid again. At Preschool Mastermind in New York adults get to participate in show—and—tell, arts—and—crafts such as finger paint, games like musical chairs and even take naps. The month-long course also has class picture day where the adults are expected to have a field trip and a parent day.30-year-old Michelle Joni Lapidos, the brain behind the adult preschool, studied childhood education and has always wanted to be a preschool teacher. She’s always looking for new ways to get people in touch with the freedom of childhood.A friend encouraged her to start the mastermind course instead.According to Candice, her best friend,Preschool Mastermind gives adults a chance to relearn and master the things that they failed to understand as children. “I realized all the importance of what we learn in preschool,〞said the founder Michelle Joni,“People come here and get in touch with their inner child. It’s magical.Weare bringing ourselves back to another place, another time with ourselves when we are more believing in ourselves, more confident and ready to take on the world.〞“One person’s here because they want to learn not to be so serious.〞Michelle said.“Another's here to learn to be more confident.〞She explained that most of the classes were planned. However,Joni added that while the planned activities were fun,it was often the spontaneous(自发的)moments that attracted students.“It’s the things you don’t plan for,the sharing between friends and learning from each other.’’26.What is the purpose of Preschool Mastermind?A. To provide practical training courses for teachers.B.To help parents understand their children better.C.To give adults a chance to return to childhood.D.To introduce some ways of playing with children.27.According to Candice, people come to this program to________•A.enjoy freedom of thinking B.understand childhood puzzlesC.discover their inner abilities D.realize their childhood dreams28.What do we know about Michelle Joni?A.She founded Preschool Mastermind. B.She likes to make plans in advance. C.She used to be a preschool teacher. D.She gained confidence by sharing. BLaughter serves as the glue〔胶水〕 for social situations and as an ice-breaker for sadness and boredom. It is good for the soul, builds friendships and reduces stress. Therefore developing a sense of humor is part of becoming a mature, emotionally healthy person. If you’ve ever been told to “lighten up〞or “chill out〞, you should save the blue attitude for serious situations and develop your sense of humor.Forgive accidents. A sudden fall is humorous not because we like to see people fall, but because it surprises. From a spilled〔溢出〕water glass in a meeting to Aunt Rae’s teeth coming off in the Thanksgiving turkey, the emba rrassment of accidents can be reduc ed by humor and a helping hand. After making sure that nobody’s hurt, forgive accidents with a smile rather than a scolding.Look for the unexpected. The kid who used to look at you with his eyes closed during a test had the idea. Parents who serve green eggs and ham to their children on graduation day get the idea. Unexpected actions lighten an atmosphere and relax people.Learn to laugh with your kids. Most of what children say and do is funny. Help them learn that accidents are sometimes funny and sometimes occasions for joining in and helping another human being. By sharing laughs and attempting to explain humor, you develop your sense of humor, as well as help kids develop their own sense of humor.29.If you’ve ever been told to “lighten up〞or “chill out〞, it means ______.A. you are humorousB. you are blueC. you are funnyD. you lack humor30.According to Paragraph 2, when your friend falls, you can ______.A. laugh at himB. smileC. scold himD. feel embarrassed31.What is the best title for the passage?A. The Function of HumorB. Ways to Become a Healthy PersonC. How to Develop a Sense of HumorD. Proper Attitudes Toward HumorCMy daughter Alisa was born blind in her right eye and was bullied (欺侮) pretty severely in school. So I gave up my job as a babysitter and then schooled my daughter heart and soul at home.A year ago a boy of 14 befriended my daughter on Facebook after reading something Alisa wrote about bullying. Today he messaged her and asked if she would like six tickets to a Colorado Rockies baseball game. They have never met in person but she said, “Sure! That would be great.〞Then I received a call from his mother explaining why her son had chosen my daughter. She said he thought my daughter deserved(应得) them because of all the good she does in the community. Her son, she explained, had experienced a similar situation and was also home schooled. What she said is true. Now my daughter Alisa continues to teach groups of girls in trouble in our community how to look within themselves for the positive and how to be their own person.Everything taken into consideration, we decided to meet the mother and the boy at a local bike shop. After meeting, the boy approached my car and my daughter gavehim a hug and thanked him for his generosity. She told him that she had never been to a baseball game and that she was going to take her entire family, including myself, her dad, little sister, her cousin and an aunt who has brain cancer. We all thanked one another, got in our car, and went our way. As we drove home my daughter opened the envelope. Inside it were the tickets and $100 each to buy hot dogs, pay for parking and not have any worries but a great time.My daughter has always been the giver and now she and our family are the receivers and I can not tell you how honored we feel to be on the other end. What an incredible young man to have such a kind idea.32. What did the author once do according to the passage?A.She was a ticket seller. B.She was a school teacher.C.She was a social worker. D.She was a babysitter.33 . How did the boy get to know my daughter?A.They got in touch via the Internet.B.They met when buying tickets to a baseball game.C.They became familiar when talking face to face.D.They went to the same school and met each other.34. Why did the boy want to offer free tickets to Alisa?A.Because Alisa is a disabled girl.B.Because Alisa often helps those in trouble.C.Because he has a lot money to share.D.Because he has a similar situation with Alisa.35. Which of the following best describes the passage?A.Two heads are better than one.B.A friend in need is a friend indeed.C.Good is rewarded with good.D.Where there is a will, there is a way.第二节〔一共5小题;每一小题2分,满分是10分〕根据短文内容,从短文后的选项里面选出能填入空白处的最正确选项。

Mom knew exactly what I was thinking. “ Don’t ride the bike with Mary on the back,〞she said. “It’s too dangerous. You could kill yourself. But in her own way, she was holding me tighter than I could understand—she was teaching me the lesson I needed. “ You did it—deal with it and learn from it. AI was sleeping in my room when my bed started shaking and a loud noise was heard. I woke up and my mom was screaming my name. Next moment I was running along with my younger sister, mom and dad. Before I ran out of the door,I realized my elder sister hadn’t come out yet. So I screamed her name at the top of my voice. My mom said she had gone to her class. Then the four of us,along with many others, were running on the staircase. We lived on the seventh floor,so I thought we would not be able to make it and the building would fall before we managed to reach even the fourth floor. My dad’s head was injured by something falling down.I did try to put my hand over his head. When we reached the sixth floor ,the building split into two.We had no way to get down. The next thing I remember is silence. There were around 30 people on the staircase and none could react.Five minutes later, someone opened the door of the sixth floor flat.We all went in.We were wondering how we would get down. From the balcony of the sixth floor flat,I saw people standing on the ground floor. All eyes were stuck on us .I could see my elder sister crying. Our first hope of surviving came when a worker climbed a rope to where we were. That was,the first time we thought maybe we could get down.Half an hour passed and we were still trapped. Finally RSS people arrived with ropes. They got people down one by one. My biggest worry was how my dad would get down. Finally after two and a half hours,we all got down. That day we saw the power of nature. It has taken more than two years to build the flats and it took just one and a half minutes to destroy the structure.1. What is this passage mainly about?A. Ways to survive an earthquake.B. Reasons why earthquakes happen.C. The love of parents in an earthquake.D. The writer’s experience in an earthquake.2. When the building split into two,the writer and his familyA. were still sleepingB. were trapped on the sixth floorC. were looking for a family memberD. were running from the seventh floor to the sixth floor3. The first time the writer thought they would probably survive was whenA. he was encouraged by people on the ground floorB. someone opened the door of the sixth floor flatC. a worker climbed up on a ropeD. RSS people arrived with ropes4. The earthquake made the writer realize thatA. there is always hope for peopleB. the power of nature is really greatC. natural disasters can happen any timeD. human beings are strong in natural disastersBKids will often ignore(无视〕 your requests for them to shut off the TV,start their chores,or do their homework as a way to avoid following your directions. Before you know it,you’ve started to sound like a broken record as you repeatedly ask them to do their assignments, clean their rooms,or take out the trash.Rather than saying ,“Do your chores now.〞You’ll be more effective if you set a target time for when the chores have to be completed. So instead of arguing about starting chores, just say,“If chores aren’t done by 4 p.m.,here are the consequences.〞 Then it’s up to your child to complete the chores.Put the ball back in their court.Don’t argue or fight with them, just say,“That’s the way it’s going to be.〞 It shouldn’t be punitive(惩罚性的)as much as it should be persuasive.“If your chores aren’t done by 4 p.m.,then no video game time until chores are done. And if finishing those chores runs into homework time, that’s going to be your loss.〞On the other hand, when dealing with homework, keep it very simple. Have a time when homework starts, and at that time, all electronics go off and do not go back on until you see that their homework is done. If your kids say they have no home-work,then they should use that time to study or read. Either way, there should be a time set aside when the electronics are off. When a kid wears his iPod or headphones when you’re trying to talk to him, make no bones about it;he is not ignoring you,he is disrespecting you. At that point, everything else should stop until he takes the earplugs out of his ears. Don’t try to communicate with him when he’s wearing headphones —- even if he tells you he can hear you. Wearing them while you’re talking to himis a sign of disrespect.Parents should be very tough about this kind of thing.Remember mutual respect becomes more important as children mature.5. According to the passage,it seldom happens that ________.A. kids turn a deaf ear to their parents’ requestsB. parents’ directions sound like a broken recordC. children are ready to follow their parents’ directionsD. parents are unaware of what they are repeating to their kids6. Parents will be able to deal with their children more effectively if they ________.A. avoid direct ways of punishmentB. make them do things at their requestC. argue and fight with their childrenD. allow their children to behave on their own7. It can be inferred from the passage that ________.A. parents should take off his headphones when trying to have a talk withtheir childB. it will make no difference that a kid is wearing his earplugs while talking to his parentsC. parents shouldn’t give in to their kid when he shows no sign of respectD.kids’ purposely talking to their parents with iPod gives them a sense of power and con trol 8.The main idea of the passage is ________.A. that respecting each other is more important than anything elseB. how kids behave to ignore and disrespect their parentsC. that children should make choices and decisions on their ownD. how parents can deal with their kids’ behavior effectivelyCMost American students go to traditional public schools. There are about 88,000 public schools all over the US. Some students attend about 3,000independent public schools called charter schools.Charter schools are selfgoverning.Private companies operate some charter schools. They are similar in some ways to traditional public schools. They receive tax just as other public schools do. Charter schools must prove to local or state governments that their students are learning. These govern- ments provide the schools with the agreement called a charter that permits them to operate.Charter schools are different because they don’t have to obey most laws governing traditional public schools. Local, state or federal governments cannot tell them what to teach. Each school can choose its own goals and decide the ways it wants to reach them. Class size is usually smaller than in traditional public schools.Governments strongly support charter schools as a way to reorganize public schools that are failing to educate students. But some education agencies and unions oppose charter schools. One teachers' union has just made public the results of the first national study comparing the progress of students in traditional schools and charter schools. The American Federation of Teachers criticized the government's delay in releasing the results of the study, which is called the National Assessment of Educational Progress.Union education experts say the study shows that charter school students performed worse in math and reading tests than students in regular public schools. Some experts say the study is not a fair look at charter schools because students in those schools have more problems than students in traditional schools.Other education experts say the study results should make charter school officials demand more student progress.9. If a private company wants to operate a charter school, it must ______.A. try new methods of teachingB. prove its management abilityC. obey all local and state lawsD.get the government’s permission10. Charter schools are independent because________.A. they make greater progressB. their class size is smallerC. they enjoy more freedomD. they oppose traditional ways11. People have different opinions about charter schools.DJuly 28th, 2003 London—It hasn't been like this since the death of Diana. Britain has been suffering from a national nervous breakdown ever since David Beckham, handsome idol of the Manchester United Soccer Team, announced that he was leaving to play for Real Madrid. A London taxi driver asked, “Has the world gone mad? He's only a footballer!〞 But he was mistaken. A footballer is the least of what David Beckham is.In the period of soccer that will come to be known as B.B.—Before Beckham —the sport was a team game. What mattered was the club, the team and the player in that order. Then in the mid1990s, David Beckham—or“Becks〞 who is known in that familiar shortened form the British like to call their working class hero came along , and changed the face of soccer. It wasn't his right foot that changed the game, but his photogenic face. And the fact is that he used it to become one of the most recognizable and richest athletes in the world, receiving a salary of $8 million per year and earning at least $17 million more in advertisements. You can never imagine that his move from Manchester United to Real Madrid is $40 million.Beckham interests not only those who have no interest in the club for which he plays, but those who have no interest in soccer. He is the most recognized sportsman in Asia and he's even managed to interest American-s. The 27-year-old,tongue-tied, surprisingly shy working-class boy from London's East End, has turned himself into a soccer virus, one that has made the whole world mad.12. That all changed in 2013 when my mom died.Sorrow does strange things to people. My brother and I dealt with it differently. He was 18 then and put his feelings into finishing his final year of high school.I turned to drug. I’d been using a painkiller for years to help with my kidney disease and I’d never abused it. But that changed in a moment. My mother’s death took over my life. I remember swallowing a handful of painkillers and then calling a local drug dealer to bring me more pills. My addiction progressed and I became even more irresponsible. I even risked losing my son when child protective services became concerned enough about my ability to be a good parent. I’ll never forget the fear on my brother’s face when he came to the police station. My brother was confused by my decisions. He didn’t realize addiction was a mental illness. I could see the anger and hopelessness in his eyes. Seeing him walk away from me was one of the worst feelings I’ve ever experienced.I started treatment. As my brother saw the work I put into my recovery, he began to let go of his anger. Little by little, we repaired our relationship. I know our mother would be proud. I remember someone telling me that my mother’s death would either destroy our family or bring us closer. But communicating with a submarine (潜艇) or a diver is not so easy. The lack of practical methods for sharing data between underwater and airborne devices has long been a frustration for scientists. The difficulty stems from the fact that radio signals work perfectly in air travel but poorly in water. Sonar(声呐)signals used by underwater sensors reflect off the surface of the water rather than reaching the air. Now, researchers at MIT have developed a method with the potential to revolutionize underwater communication. "What we've shown is that it's actually feasible to communicate from underwater to the air," says Fadel Adib, a professor at MJT's Media Lab, who led the research. The MIT researchers designed a system that uses an underwater machine to send sonar signals to the surface, making vibrations (振动)corresponding to the Is and Os of the data. A surface receiver then reads and decodes these tiny vibrations. The researchers call the system TARF. It has any number of potential real-world uses, Adib says. It could be used to find downed planes underwater by reading signals from sonar devices in a plane' s black box and it could allow submarines to communicate with the surface.Right now the technology is low-resolution. The initial study was conducted in the MIT swimming pool at maximum depths of around 11 or 12 feet. The next steps for the researchers are to see if TARF is workable at much greater depths and under varying conditions-high waves, storms, schools of fish. They also want to see if they can make the technology work in the other direction- air to water. If the technology proves successful in real-world conditions, expect "texting while diving" to be the latest underwater fashion.8.What does the author mainly talk about in Paragraph 1?A.The future of video chat underwater and in air.B.The difficulty of communication from water to air.C.The frustrations of developing underwater devices.D.The current situation of communicating with a submarine.9.What does the underlined word "feasible" mean?A.Changeable. B.Convenient. C.Achievable. D.Alternative. 10.What do we know about TARF?A.It is widely used to find downed planes.B.It can work well at great depths underwater.C.It is an underwater machine that sends signals.D.It can send, receive and read signals from underwater.11.What is the best title for the text?A.The Real-world Uses of Sonar Technology.B.A Breakthrough in the Application of Video Chat.C.Full Water-to-air Communication Closer to Reality.D.TARF Becoming a New Means of Communication.DFemale scientists with PhDs earn substantially less than their male counterpart (职位相当的人). A survey tracked more than 55,700 people who earned PhDs between 2024 and 2024. Overall, about 35% of all PhD recipients reported having a permanent job lined up at graduation, among which men reported an average annual salary of $95,000. Women reported a salary of $72,500, a gap of $22,500. In a similar survey in 2024, the overall gender(性别) gap in salaries was $18,000.Men were over-represented in relatively high-paying fields such as computer science and engineering, but inequality continued to exist even within fields. Men with permanent jobs in the life sciences, for example, reported an expected median salary of $87,000, compared with $80,000 for women. In mathematics and computer science, men reported an expected median salary of $125,000; for women, that figure was $101,500.Salaries and career paths can vary greatly from one scientific discipline to another, says Michael Roach, an economist at Cornell University. Roach is looking closely into differences in career outcomes for US PhD holders. Roach says it’s clear that women, on average, earn less than men even when all other factors are taken into account. In industrial research and development, there are differences that can’t be explained by ability or degree or the status of a university. The root causes of those differences remain unclear, Roach says. One possibility is that men are more willing to negotiate for higher salaries. Roach notes that some women might have to make sacrifices to start families, but it would be a mistake to blame all income gaps on lifestyle decisions. “A lot of men want to spend mor e time with their families too,” he says. The report shows that a PhD improves overall career and salary prospects, but the actual value clearly depends on the field of study, the demands of the marketplace and, for reasons that still aren’t clear, the per son holding the degree. Researchers are still looking at the factors that might keep women from achieving the same level of success that equally qualified men are able to achieve.12.Which of the following is NOT a cause of the salary differences? A.Gender. B.Negotiation skills.C.The field of study. D.Earning a PhD.13.According to the second paragraph, which of the following is likely to earn the highest salary?A.A man working in mathematics.B.A woman working in computer science.C.A man working in the life sciences.D.A woman working in the life science.14.What does Roach probably agree with?A.The income gaps are mainly caused by lifestyle decisions.B.Lifestyle decisions may not be the only cause of income gaps.C.Men are more likely to spend time with their families than women.D.Women are more likely to spend time with their families than men.15.What is the author’s main purpose of writing the passage?A.To discuss methods to prevent salary differences.B.To praise the researchers’ effort.C.To raise awareness of gender pay gap.D.To stress the importance of educational backgrounds.其次节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)依据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
