She passed away five years ago at the age of 65, but the impact she has left on the world of architecture is profound.Hadid was born into an upper-class Iraqi family in 1950. At the very beginning, she wanted to become a mathematician and studied science at the American University of Beirut, But at some point she realized that she preferred shapes to numbers. And she turned her concentration to architecture and went to London where she met the famous Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas.“There are 360 degrees, so why stick to one?” Hadid once said. Despite her abundance of amazing ideas, before the beginning of the 90s, not a single building based on her blueprints had been built. Her highly expressive style, while initially criticized and believed to be crazy, is now regarded as pioneering work. Her striking contemporary architecture, inspired by natural landforms, has graced the skylines of major metropolitan cities.“Women are always being told, ‘you’re not going to make it; It’s too difficult. You can’t do that Don’t enter this competition; You’ll never win it’,” Hadid said. “They need confidence in themselves and people around them for support.”Never one to be boxed in by conventions, Hadid proved society wrong. She received her first prize, the “Gold Medal Architectural Design” for her British Architecture in 1982. From then on, the awards kept rolling in. But the true triumph for Hadid came in 2004. Her project for the London Olympics Aquatic Center won her the Pritzker Architecture Prize. She became the first woman and first Muslim to earn the award, making a name for herself and paving the way for female architects. Hadid’s genius lives on in the array of many other spectacular build ings she has left behind in the world. Among them are the Guangzhou Opera House, the Beijing Daxing International Airport, as well as the Al Wakrah Stadium in Qatar where the 2022 FIFA World Cup will be held.Hadid may be gone, but her global influence on a new generation of female architects is here to stay.4. You’ve just eaten something spicy, knowing it would be painful, but you chose to do it anyway. Are humans just masochistic (自讨苦吃的), or is there something else going on? 16Spicy isn’t actually a taste like salty, sweet, sour and bitten —it’s a sens ation. 17 . When we eat foods containing capsaicin (辣椒素), our bodies are tricked into thinking the temperature is actually rising. In trying to relieve the burning sensation, our bodies release endorphins (内啡肽) which control pain and, at the same time, give a feeling of pleasure — like painkillers. This is what is happening chemically, but there is also a conscious side to choosing spicy food. Dr Tamara Rosenbaum, a Cognitive Neuroscientist, explains in an interview with the BBC that this is 18 . Furthermore, we obtain pleasure from the other ingredients chilli is generally cooked and eaten with—including fat, sugar and salt. So — like skydiving — eating chilli is a form of thrill-seeking, 19Humans, one of the few mammals on Earth that developed a taste for capsaicin, started cultivating chilli peppers about six thousand years ago. Human intervention changed the chilli pepper to suit human tastes and needs —including the pepper’s colour, size and capsaicin content-helping toexplain the many different types of chilli peppers now available. 20 . We eat around 57.3 million tons of peppers globally each year, and chilli is a key ingredient in traditional dishes from Mexico to Korea. When the bell rang on the last day of school, Susanna cheered along with her classmates. You don’t have to visit the University to see the art. You just need a computer linked to a telephone. You can call the telephone number of a university computer and connect your own computer to it. All of the art is stored in the school computer. It is computer art, produced electronically by artists on their own computers. In only a few minutes, your computer can receive and copy all the pictures and drawings.Robert Shostak is director of the new computer museum. He says he started the museum because computer artists had no place to show their works.A computer artist can only record his pictures electronically and send the records, or floppy discs, to others to see on their computers. He can also put his pictures on paper. But to print good pictures on paper, the computer artist needs an expensive laser printer.Robert Shostak says the electronic museum is mostly for art or computer students at schools and universities. Many of the pictures in the museum are made by students. Mr. Shostak said the FIU museum will make computer art more fun for computer artists because more people can see it. He says artists enjoy their work much more if they have an audience. And the great number of home computers in America could mean a huge audience for the electronic museum.51. At the start of the space programme there was strong resistance from some people against having women in space. However, some women were very keen to become astronauts and in the end they were successful. In 1978, NASA began the first training programme for women astronauts.Judy Resnick and Christa McAuliffe were both astronauts and they were both women, but in many other ways they were very different. Both of them were on Flight STS-5L-L. Judy Resnick was born in 1949 and studied engineering at university and went on to obtain a PhD in 1977. She was a member of the first group of women selected for astronaut training in 1978, and in 1984, she became the second woman in space. During that flight, she helped to launch three new satellites and she carried out a programme of research. She was, in many ways, a professional astronaut whose whole life was devoted to space travel.Christa McAuliffe was born in 1948 and she was an astronaut almost by accident. In 1984, NASA decided to find a teacher who could accompany astronauts into space. They hoped that she would be able to communicate with students from space and encourage every one of them to be interested in space travel. Christa was a secondary teacher in history and social studies. She was a gifted teacher and she was selected from over 11,000 applicants to go on flight STS-51-L. She was also a very good communicator and she immediately established a very good relationship with the news media(radio, television and newspapers). It was partly because of this that there was a great deal of interest and excitement about the flight. Thousands of students in schools and universities all around the country were looking forward to communicating with Christa in space. Millions of people were watching her flight with great interest. It is partly because of the excitement over McAuliffe's place in the flight that the disaster in 1986 had such an effect on people.58.We can learn from the first two paragraphs that ___________.A. Judy was against the idea of having women in space at firstB. Judy was the first woman selected for astronaut trainingC. Judy helped to launch three new satellites at the age of 35D. Judy carried out a programme during her second space travel59.Christa McAuliffe was chosen for training because _______.A. she was popular with the news mediaB. she expected to give history lessons in spaceC. she was an excellent teacher and communicatorD. she made the students in space very excited50.The reason why there was great interest in Flight STS-51-L is that ________.A. both Christa and Judy got PhD degrees in the same yearB. a young secondary school teacher was on the flightC. students were going to learn more about space travelD. it was the first time for women to travel in space61.What would be the best title for the passage?A. Two AstronautsB. Flight STS-51-LC. Travelling in SpaceD. The Training Programme(D)City traffic is a great problem. More cars are produced every year and the streets are getting more and more crowded. So during “rush hour”, when people are going to or from their work, traffic is brought to a standstill. It has been suggested that commuters should share their cars and give each other lifts. So each car would carry four or five people instead of only one. It is an excellent idea, however, so far nobody has been able to think of a way to compel people to do so.To discourage motorists from leaving their cars in the streets all day, parking meters(计量仪器)are used. When you park at a meter, you must put a coin in the slot. This pays for a certain amount of time. The meter records this and it shows when the time that you have paid for is finished. If the car is still there then, you have to pay a fine.Traffic wardens look after the meters. They walk around the streets and check that every meter shows that money has been paid for the car parked there. If a meter registers “Time expired”(时间已到), the motorist who has left his car there is fined. Of course, the traffic warden cannot wait for the owner of the car to return. He carries a block of printed forms, and on one of these he writes down all the details, such as the registration number of the car, where it is parked, how much the driver must pay and where he must send the money. He leaves this form on the car where the driver will be able to see it easily; he usually pushes it under one of the windscreen wipers so that it will not blow away. And in case it rains before the motorist returns, the form is put in a little plastic envelope to protect it. With developments in the speed and connectivity of the Internet, increases in technology and the rise of on-demand entertainment companies, people can now have their favorite shows stream (流播) directly to their television at their convenience. This behavior is nothing new. In fact, binge-watching has been officially listed in dictionaries since 2015. The entertainment companies recognize this behavior and many take steps to encourage it. Often, instead of releasing each episode on a week-by-week basis, an entire series will become available concurrently. Once the episode finishes, many platforms will display pop-ups with “you might like” suggestions, or will automatically play the next episode. However, recent research suggests that out of the more than half of British adults who watch more than one episode of a show back-to-back (一集接一集地), almost a third have admitted missing sleep or becoming tired as a result; and 25% have neglected their household chores (家务活). Next we’ll be missing work!Bingeing has other connections — binge eating, binge drinking and binge smoking. All of them are often associated with a lack of control and a possible route to addiction. Lindsey Fussell, consumer group director, said, “The days of waiting a week for the next episode are largely gone, with people finding it hard to resist (抗拒) watching multiple episodes around the house or on the move.” If people find binge-watching hard to resist, are we witnessing the birth of a new type of addiction? The countless number of information and entertainment that television and online media can bring us is, many would say, a good thing. However, when the activity begins to bleed into other areas, causing us to stop functioning, then it becomes a problem. So, what’s the answer? Moderation! Neither a tiny amount, nor too much. After all, as the old proverb says, “A little ofwhat you fancy does you good.”4.How did the writer develop the first paragraph?A.By giving a definition.B.By telling a story.C.By listing some examples.D.By analyzing the cause and effect. 5.Which of the following can best replace the underlined word “concurrently” in Paragraph2?A.For convenience.B.At the same time.C.In detail.D.Free of charge.6.What Lindsey said in Paragraph 4 implies that ______.A.people can’t control their feelings B.people can’t resist the temptation of Bingeing C.people have no patience to do work D.people are addicted to waiting for a new episode7.What advice did the writer give at last?A.To keep online media from stopping functioning.B.To enjoy entertainment as much as possible.C.To learn life lessons from the episodes.D.To watch episodes in a moderate way. This week, Google researchers published a paper describing results from an AI tool built to create music. The tool, called MusicLM, is not the first AI music tool to be launched. But the examples Google provided demonstrate musical creative ability based on a limited set of descriptive words.Several different music examples produced by MusicLM were published online. Some of the generated music came from just one-or two-word descriptions, such as “jazz”, “rock” or “techno (高科技舞曲)”. The tool also created other examples from more detailed descriptions containing whole sentences. In one example, Google researchers included these instructions to MusicLM, “It is a soundtrack of a game. It is fast-paced and upbeat, with a catchy electric guitar riff (反复乐节). The music is repetitive and easy to remember, but with unexpected sounds ...” In the resulting recording, the music seemed to keep very close to the description. The team said the more detailed the description was, the better the system could attempt to produce it.The MusicLM model operates similarly to the machine-learning systems used by ChatGPT. ChatGPT and MusicLM both require powerful computers to operate complex machine-learning models. The San Francisco-based company OpenAI launched ChatGPT late last year. ChatGPT has recently received a lot of attention because of its ability to generate complex writings and other content from just a simple description in natural languages. Such tools can produce human-like results because they are trained on huge amounts of data. Many different materials are fed into the systems to permit them to learn complex skills to create realistic works. However, the MusicLM researchers said there were some risks linked to the new tool. One of the biggest issues the researchers identified was biases (偏好) present in the training data. A bias might be including too much of one side and not enough of the other. The researchers said this raised a question about appropriateness for music generation for cultures underrepresented in the training data.8.What can we learn about MusicLM?A.It is the first AI music tool to be launched.B.It requires detailed descriptions of full sentences.C.It creates music based on simple descriptive words.D.It generates complex writings from a simple description.9.What is the similarity between ChatGPT and MusicLM?A.They can take the place of musicians.B.They have gained commercial success.C.They don't have any practical use in life.D.They are based on huge amounts of data. 10.Which of the following is an issue of the MusicLM model?A.Creating music with strong biases.B.Requiring too much training data.C.Being difficult for some people to use.D.Producing music works with no creativity. 11.What would be the best title for the text?A.The future of humans with AI B.A new AI tool to make musicC.Music created by some AI tools D.AI and its function in culture developmentCyber-bullying (网络欺凌) may take place in the online world, but it is no less damaging than in the real world. If you do little jobs well, the big ones will tend to take care of themselves,〞 said Dale Carnegie.Sometimes, doing your best work or trying your hardest at something is difficult. It may have something to do with trying to do something new for the first time, like a new sport or activity at school. It may have something to do with doing homework for a subject that is not your favorite or is not your best.As Hunter S. Thompson once said, “Anything worth doing i s worth doing right.〞And as Albert Einstein added, “We have to do the best we can. This is our sacred human responsibility.〞Developing the habit of trying your hardest and doing your best is something that will help you succeed throughout your life. If you have looked at some quotes related to trying your hardest, you will see that many of them come from people who have made a big difference in the world. This is not a coincidence. It was not only their cleverness that helped them stand out and change the world, but their ability to try their hardest and do their best in whatever they were doing. If you can develop thissame habit---to do your best in any situation, it will be a great benefit to your family, career, school and community. As Bob C ousy put it, “Do your best when no one is looking. If you do that, then you can be successful at anything you put your mind to.〞 The choice is yours.24. Why does the author use the quote of Dale Carnegie in Paragraph 1? A. To describe a scene. B. When you are doing something that you like very much.26. Why does the author suggest we develop the habit of trying our hardest? A. To let us make a big difference in the world. B. To help us achieve success all through our life. C. To make us more skillful in our work.D. To make it possible for us to benefit the whole world. 27. What is the main purpose of the passage?A. To inform.B. To advertise.C. To introduce.D. To persuade.C The young boy saw me, or rather, he saw the car and quickly ran upto me ,eager to sell his bunches of bananas and bags of peanuts. Though he appeared to be about twelve, he seemed to have already known the bitterness of life. “Bananas 300 naira. Peanuts 200 naira.〞 He said ina low voice. I bargained him down to 200 for the fruit and nuts. When he agreed, I handed him a 500 naira bill. He didn’t have change. So I told him not to worry. He said thanks and smiled a row of perfect teeth. When, two weeks later, I saw the boy again, I was more aware of myposition in a society where it’s not that un common to see a little boy who should be in school standing on the corner selling fruit in the burning sun. My parents had raised me to be aware of the advantage we had been afforded and the responsibility it brought to us.I pulled over and rolled down my window. He had a bunch of bananas anda bag of peanuts ready. I waved them away. “What’s up?〞 asked him.“I…I don’t have money to buy books for school.〞 I reached into my pocket and handed him two fresh 500 naira bills. “Will this help?〞 I asked. He looked around nervously before taking the money. One thousand naira was a lot of money to someone whose family probably made about 5,000 naira or less each year. “Thank you, sir.〞 he said. “Thank you very much!〞When driving home, I wondered if my little friend actually used themoney for schoolbooks. What if he’s a cheat? And then I wondered w hy Idid it. Did I do it to make myself feel better? Was I using him? I didn’t know his name or the least bit about him, nor did I think to ask.Over the next six months, I was busy working in a news agency innorthern Nigeria. Sometime after I returned, I went out for a drive. When I was about to pull over, the boy suddenly appeared by my window with a big smile ready on his face.“Oh, gosh! Long time.〞“Are you in school now?〞 I asked. He nodded.“That’s good,〞 I said. A silence fell as we looked at each other, and then I realized what he wanted. “Here,〞 I held out a 500 naira bill. “Take this.〞 He shook his head and stepped back as if hurt. “What’s wrong?〞 I asked. “It’s a gift.〞He shook his head again and brought his hand from behind his back. His face shone with sweat. He dropped a bunch of bananas and a bag of peanutsin the front seat before he said, “I’ve been waiting to give these to you .〞28.What was the author’s first impression of the boy?A. He seemed to be poor and greedy.B. He seemed to have suffered a lot.C. He seemed younger than his age.D. He seemed good at bargaining.29.The second time the author met the boy, the boy . A. told him his purpose of selling fruit and nuts B. wanted to express his thanksC. asked him for money for his schoolbooksD. tried to take advantage of him30.Why did the author give his money to the boy?A. Because he had enough money to do that.B. Because he had learnt to help others since childhood.C. Because he held a higher position in the society.D. Because he had been asked by the news agency to do so. 31.Which of the following best describes the boy? A. Brave and polite. B. Kind and smart.C. Honest and thankful.D. Shy and nervousD When you go to the doctor, you like to come away with a prescription .Itmakes you feel better to know you will get some medicine. But the do ctor knows that medicine is not always needed. Sometimes all a sick person needs is some reassurance that all will be well. In such cases the doctor may prescribe a placebo.A placebo is a sugar pill, a harmless shot, or ail empty capsule. Eventhough they have no medicine in them, these things seem to make people well. The patient thinks it is medicine and begins to get better. How doesthis happen? The study of the placebo opens up new knowledge about the way the human body can heal itself. It is as if there was a doctor in each of us. The doctor will heal the body for us if we let it. But it is not yet known just how the placebo works to heal the body. Some people say it worksbecause the human mind fools itself. These people say that if the mind is fooled into thinking it got medicine, then it will act as if it did, and the body will feel better.Placebos do not always work. The success of this treatment seems to rest a lot with the relationship between the patient and the doctor. If the patient has a lot of trust in the doctor and if the doctor really wants to help the patient, then the placebo is more likely to work. So in a way, the doctor is the most powerful placebo of all.A placebo can also have bad effects. If patients expect a bad reaction to medicine, then they will also show a bad reaction to the placebo. This would seem to show that a lot of how you react to medicine is in your mindrather than in your body. Some doctors still think that if the placebo can have bad effects it should never be used. They think there is still not enough known about it.The strange power of the placebo does seem to suggest that the human mind is stronger than we think it is. There are people who say you can heal your body by using your mind. And the interesting thing is that evenpeople who swear this is not possible have been healed by a placebo .32. What do we know about placebo according to the passage? A. It contains some sort of medicine.B. It won’t function if you are negative about medicine.C. People who don’t believe placebo can’t be healed by it.D. Patients and doctors know clearly how it helps to heal the body. 33. Why is the doctor sometimes the most powerful placebo? A. The patient needs help badly .B. The patient believes in the doctor .C. The doctor knows better about your body .D. The doctor has carefully studied medicine .34. What does the underlined word “it〞 in Paragraph 5 refer to? A. The placebo. B. The bad effect.C. The body.D. The medicine. 35. What is the passage mainly about? A. Placebo :Work on Your Mind B. Placebo :The Most PowerfulMedicine C. Placebo :The Best Doctor D. Placebo :Heal Your Body第二节〔共5小题;每题2 分,总分值10分〕根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最正确选项。

It wasn’t a major role and he had only four or five lines. However, he worked hard at perfecting the lines, repeating them in front of a mirror over and over again, as his drama teacher had suggested. He had great fun rehearsing (排练) with the older students. Then finally the big night came.Suddenly, things felt different. The theater was full of audience. He looked around at those experienced actors and saw the confidence they’d shown at rehearsal seemed t o have disappeared. Everyone was on edge. When Tom got on stage, he couldn’t help hurrying into the words he had repeated so many times before. He tried to slow down but, thinking about doing that, he suddenly realized he had missed a sentence. With no time to think it over, he carried on. When he stepped off the stage, his hands felt sweaty and his heart was racing. He didn’t think about what he had achieved. Instead, he was beating himself up for the mistake that he had made. The audience, of course, did n’t know he had missed a sentence. In fact, no one noticed it except his drama teacher. “Well done, ” she said. “Acting is like learning to ride a bike. You may fall off a few times, yet each time you get back on, you do it better. Your performance may not have been perfect but, for your first time, it was great. ”The drama teacher’s words put Tom’s mind at ease. What is the most shocking about the heatwave affecting the Pacific Northwest is not that it has hit a usually mild area, nor that so many long-standing temperature records are being broken. It is thatthose records are being broken by such large margins (幅度). In Portland, Oregon, temperature reached 46.6℃(116°F) — making it one of several cities in the region where former records have been beaten by a full 5℃(9°F). At the same time, heatwaves are also hitting central Europe and even Siberia.Heatwaves may become headlines, but less attention is paid to them. In 2018 about 300,000 people over the age of 65 died as a result of extreme heat, mainly in India, a 54% increase since 2000, according to a report in the Lancet, a medical journal. The report also shows that, unlike storms and floods, heat does not lead to dramatic before-and-after pictures or widespread damage to belongings. It is a silent killer. As many as 70,000 people died due to a heatwave in Europe in 2003.Heat also kills by worsening health conditions such as heart problems, so not all the deaths it causes may be directly attributed (归因) to it. Climate change will make heatwaves more common and more extreme. Even if greenhouse-gas emissions (排放) are cut to zero by the middle of this century, temperatures will go on rising for decades. So other measures are needed to protect people against extreme heat.Governments can set up early warning systems to alarm health workers, shut down schools and stop outdoor activities. They can provide the public with forecasts of coming heatwaves, explanations of the dangers and detailed advice on what to do. Improved facilities can also help. This includes providing shaded areas, water parks and “misting stations” to help people cool down, and get to airconditioned “cooling centers” where they can fi nd shelter and sleep if necessary. The world is, undoubtedly, facing a big health challenge right now. There is no excuse for ignoring heatwaves and their effects.8. What shocks us most about the heatwave in the Pacific Northwest?A.It has stricken a usually mild area.B.It hits central Europe except Siberia.C.Many temperature records are being broken.D.Many records are being broken by large margins.9. What can we learn from the report in the Lancer?A.People have paid much attention to heatwaves.B.Heat doesn’t cause widespread damage to belongings.C.The damage of heat is as obvious as storms and floods.D.About 300,000 middle-aged people died from extreme heat.10. What can governments do to protect people against heatwaves?A.Provide some cool places. B.Build nursing homes.C.Organize outdoor activities. D.Shelter the homeless.11. What can be a suitable title for the text?A.Improving Public Facilities B.Taking Heatwaves SeriouslyC.Preventing Natural Disasters D.Reducing Greenhouse-gas EmissionNew genetically modified (转基因) apples designed by a biology company are being released this fall but won’t be labeled as GMOs (转基因生物). They’re called Arctic apples, whose genes have been changed from their original Golden Delicious state to make sure that after the fruits are cut open and exposed to the air, their flesh won’t turn brown in color. The development company, Okanagan Specialty Fruits, says the apples may be on sale as bagged slices in up to 400 stores this season throughout the Midwest and Southern California. The fruit won’t bear the standard “produced with genetic engineering” label because of a 2016 law allowing codes to be visible on the packaging that link to a website with information on how the fruit was made. The apples were made using a technique called gene silencing. The Okanagan team engineered the fruit’s DNA to produce less enzyme (酶) that causes the white, inner flesh to brown so that the new and improved slices will stay fresh for up to three weeks. Although there are only about 250 acres of Arctic apple trees currently planted across the US, the team hopes GMO fruits can reduce waste and increase apple sales overall. While some experts believe that the Arctic apple’s GMO status isn’t harmful, groups op posing GMOs have started protesting the apples. An organization called Friends of the Earth claims that they’re “understudied, unlabeled and unnecessary.” Right now, apple slices treated with calcium and vitamin C can be purchased off Amazon with the promise of not browning before they arrive on the customer’s doorstep. And, a little bit of lemon juice is an easier and more natural way to prevent cut apples from turning color for a few hours.12. The Arctic apples will not be labeled “GMO” because ________.A.actually these apples are not genetically modified foodB.the fruit will be sold as bagged slices in up to 400 storesC.there is not enough space for the label on the packagingD.information of their apples can be checked on the Internet13. If you’ve never been to Cambodia before, it can be overwhelming to take it all in at once. We’ve put together a guide for you to make things easier.Arrival at CambodiaMost visitors arrive in Cambodia via Siem Reap International Airport, which is three miles from Angkor Wat and roughly five miles from the city of Siem Reap. You can take minibuses, buses, or domestic flights from Siem Reap to other country regions, such as Phnom Penh, Battambang, Kampot, and Sihanoukville. To travel to Cambodia, tourists require a visa. Check the Cambodian Ministry of Tourism website for the latest information on policies before making travel arrangements.Things to do in CambodiaIf you’re thinking about a holiday to Cambodia, we have two recommendations for you:Siem ReapSiem Reap, a tiny village about five kilometres south of Angkor Wat, has grown into the fastest-growing settlement in Cambodia. Tonle SapTonle Sap, Southeast Asia’s largest freshwater lake, grows from 1,000 square miles to 6,200 square miles during the rainy season, from June to October. Over 300 species of freshwater fish breed in the flooded forests, and the lake supplies half of Cambodia’s entire fish catch. A short drive north of Siem Reap, Tonle Sap is known for its floating villages, where entire populations depend on the lake for their survival.Where to stayAs Cambodia’s most popular gateway city f or tourists, Siem Reap has a wide variety of accommodation options, from hostels to five-star hotels. Booking in advance is especially important if you plan to travel during the peak season of December and February.Best time to visitVisit Cambodia in the dry season, which lasts from the end of November to the beginning of April. What is special about Tonle Sap?A.It’s the largest freshwater lake in Asia.B.It possesses rich fishing resources.C.It’s the fastest-growing settlement in Cambodia.D.It is Cambodia’s most popular gateway city.3. If Jack is a food blogger particular about accommodation, you’re likely to recommend ________.A.Tonle Sap B.Angkor WatC.Phnom Penh D.Siem Reap2. I live in Xizhou in Yunnan Province, on the historic Tea Horse Road. I have to admit that when I first heard that Paul Salopek was going to walk the entire globe on his own two feet, I was blown away. I couldn't imagine that there could be such an unusual person in the world.Last May, I met Paul. He told me that it was his first time in China. He talked to me with great excitement about the history, migrations, and discoveries in my region of China. He spoke of the Shu-Yandu Dao (the Southern Silk Road), the travels of the 17th-century Chinese explorer Xu Xiake, the Tea Horse Road and the early 20th-century American botanist Joseph Rock. He also talked of Xuanzang. Paul considered many of them heroes and in a sense Chinese pioneers of slow journalism.I decided to accompany Paul on his walk toward Yunnan. On September 28, 2021, we set out. Our days were simple: walk, eat, sleep, and repeat. We woke up at sunrise, set off in high spirits, and rested at sunset, dragging ourselves into exhausted sleep. We met many people on the road. Some were curious, surrounding us and watching us; some gave us directions; some invited us into their home to take a rest; some spoke of the charm of their hometown. We met many beautiful souls, simple souls and warm souls. We were walking with our minds.Together, we were impressed by the biodiversity of the Gaoligong Mountains. As I walked on ancient paths through mountains, I seemed to hear the antique voices of past travelers urging me to be careful on the road.Looking back on the more than 200 miles I walked with Paul, I came to a realization. Walking for its own sake, while healthy and admirable, is only a small part of the benefit of moving with our feet. A deeper reward is rediscovering the world around us, shortening the distance between each other, and sharing each other's cultures.1. How did the writer first respond to Paul's travel plan?A.Scared. B.Puzzled. C.Disappointed. D.Surprised.2. What can we learn about Paul Salopek from paragraph 2?A.He was a western journalist. B.He had a knowledge of China.C.He came to China several times. D.He was Joseph Rock's acquaintance.3. What does paragraph 4 tell us about the writer and Paul?A.They honored the ancestors. B.They set off in high spirits.C.They satisfied the locals' curiosity. D.They built bonds with people.4. What is the main purpose of the writer's writing the text?A.To share and reflect on a journey. B.To suggest a new way of travel.C.To advocate protection of biodiversity. D.To introduce and promote Chineseculture.3. Besides “wow” and “great”, what else would you say when flying over the Earth in space? Samantha Cristoforetti, the first Italian female astronaut in space, posted several lines of a famous ancient Chinese composition on Twitter to share her joy.She first wrote in Chinese, and then attached an accurate translation of the lines in both Italian and English to help more people understand. “Looking up, I see the immensity of the cosmos; bowing my head, I look at the multitude of the world. The gaze flies, the heart expands, the joy of the senses can r each its peak, and indeed, this is true happiness,” it says. Two days before she landed on Earth, the beauty of space and Chinese literature resonated on her Twitter account. Before long, her posts went viral on Twitter with thousands of retweets, likes and replies. The text she quoted is from the Preface to Poems Composed at the Orchid Pavilion,a Chinese calligraphy masterpiece by Wang Xizhi (303-361) of the Eastern Jin Dynasty (317-420). She also attached three photos taken in space of China’s Bohai Bay a nd the day-night view of Beijing. “The poem and views are both magnificent as well as healing. If everyone could enjoy the same sight, a lot of pain in the world would be ‘dissipated’,” one user comments. As the first Italian female astronaut in space, Cristoforetti carried out her first space mission on Nov 23, 2014. In 2022, she started the second mission in April and returned to Earth on Friday night after a 127-day stay in orbit.Cristoforetti has also been active in Sino-European cooperation in the field of manned spaceflight. She was a working group member with Chinese counterparts to define and implement cooperation in the field of astronaut operations. When not traveling for work, she is an eager reader and has a great passion for languages. Speaking clear Chinese, Cristoforetti once told the media that the teams from China and Europe were working very well together in the field of astronaut training.1. What is the result of Cristoforetti’s post online?A.The birth of a masterpiece.B.A trend of journey to space.C.An instant hot issue on Twitter.D.Different translations of the lines.2. Which word below can be used to replace the underlined word “dissipated” in Paragraph 3?A.Relieved. B.Caused.C.Increased. D.Recognized.3. What can we learn from the last paragraph?A.Cristoforetti’s devotion to her career.B.Cristoforetti’s language learning strategies.C.The leadership Cristoforetti plays in her team.D.The possible motivation for Cristoforetti’s post.4. What can be the best title of the passage?A.A female astronaut becomes online starB.A Chinese poem gets popular abroadC.Literature conveys the beauty of spaceD.An Italian astronaut promotes Sino-European cooperation4. In a fascinating paper published last year in Science, a team led by Andreas Nieder of the University of Tubingen in Germany showed that crows —already known to be among the most intelligent of animals —are even more impressive than we knew. In fact, the evidence suggests that they are self-aware and, in an important sense, conscious (有意识的).Crows had been observed previously to use tools to solve certain problems. Nieder’s experiment showed that the birds were actively evaluating how to solve a particular problem; in effect, they were thinking it over. This ability to consciously assess a problem was associated with the cerebral cortex (大脑皮层) in the brains of humans, which birds don’t have.Other studies support the idea that the bird brain can, in principle, support the development of higher intelligence. It had been dismissed in the past due to the small size of birds’ brains. But recent research has shown that in birds, the neurons (神经元) are smaller and more lightly-packed, which makes sense to reduce weight and makes it easier lo fly. The total number of brain cell in crows (about 1.5 billion) is about the same as that in some monkey species. But because they are more tightly-packed, the communication between the neurons seems to be better, and the overall intelligence of crows may be closer to that of gorillas (猩猩).This research has important consequences for our understanding of the evolution of higher intelligence. First, a cerebral cortex is not needed, and there are other means to achieve the same outcome. Second, either the evolution of consciousness is very ancient tracing back to the last common ancestor of mammals and birds about 320 million years ago, or, equally interesting, consciousness arose at least twice later on, independently in mammals and birds. Both options raise the possibility that higher intelligence on the planet may not necessarily be mammal or human-like, but could very well be birdlike.1. What did Andreas Nieder’s team find out about crows?A.They are more intelligent than other animals.B.They have left people a very good impression.C.They are much cleverer than previously thought.D.They can use tools to solve certain problems.2. What does the underlined “It” in paragraph 3 refer to?A.The idea. B.The bird brain.C.The development. D.Higher intelligence.3. Why do crows have high-level intelligence?A.They have more tightly-packed brains.B.They have a small number of brain cells.C.Their brain neurons could communicate well.D.Their brain cells are the same with the monkeys.4. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?A.Cerebral cortexes are necessary for the evolution of higher intelligence.B.Both mammals and birds got their intelligence from common ancestors.C.Higher intelligence has already developed separately in different species.D.Higher intelligence on the planet might be different from what we imagine.5. Green exercise is a term used to describe any type of physical exercise that takes place in a natural environment rather than in a health club or gym. 1 . Instead, it relies on the use of natural means of taking part in activities that improve strength and endurance with as little reliance on equipment as possible.2 . For example, some consider a truly natural exercise experience requires that the individual wear clothing only made from natural fibers. Others consider barefoot running or walking with a big arena to be more desirable than running or walking with shoes.A slightly different approach to green exercise puts more stress on the fresh air, sunshine and involvement with the natural world, rather than the equipment or clothing used during the exercise.3 . Similarly, climbing a mountain using standard equipment and protective clothing would also be considered a green exercise. Many consider green exercise helps to reconnect human beings with the natural world. The interaction with nature helps to lower people's blood pressure, refresh their mind, and actually improve their self-esteem. 4 .Not everyone believes that the green exercise is more beneficial than working out in a health club or gym. 5 . Meanwhile, the use of fitness devices may result in more challenging workouts which helpstrengthen the heart and lungs in ways that more simplistic exercise in a natural setting would be difficult to manage.6. He loved to annoy me and I wanted to boss him around. I am five years older so we didn’t really share friends or activities but we always got along well. That all changed in 2013 when my mom died.Sorrow does strange things to people. My brother and I dealt with it differently. He was 18 then and put his feelings into finishing his final year of high school.I turned to drug. I’d been using a painkiller for years to help with my kidney disease and I’d never abused it. But that changed in a moment. My mother’s death took over my life. I remember swallowing a handful of painkillers and then calling a local drug dealer to bring me more pills. My addiction progressed and I became even more irresponsible. I even risked losing my son when child protective services became concerned enough about my ability to be a good parent. I’ll never forget the fear on my brother’s face when he came to the police station. My brother was confused by my decisions. He didn’t realize addiction was a mental illness. I could see the anger and hopelessness in his eyes. Seeing him walk away from me was one of the worst feelings I’ve ever experienced.I started treatment. As my brother saw the work I put into my recovery, he began to let go of his anger. Little by little, we repaired our relationship. I know our mother would be proud. I remember someone telling me that my mother’s death would either destroy our family or bring us closer. At first, it tore our family apart but, from ashes to beauty, I firmly believe her death and all of the hardship along the way have made us closer than ever. I am forever grateful.4.How did the bro ther react to their mother’s death?A.He lost hope for life. B.He started to take drugs.C.He quit school immediately. D.He focused on his study.5.Why did the author nearly lose her son?A.She couldn’t afford to raise him.B.He was taken away by the police.C.She was not considered a responsible parent.D.She didn’t want to take care of him any longer.6.What repaired the author and her brother’s relationship?A.Her efforts put into recovery. B.Her devotion to her brother. C.Somebody else’s kind words.D.Good memories of their childhood. 7.What can be the best title for the text?A.Sufferings after Mother’s DeathB.Drugs-Not a Good Way to Kill SorrowC.Kicking Away My Drug AddictionD.Getting together with My Dear BrotherCWe can video chat with astronauts aboard the International Space Station and watch live footage from the frozen heights of Everest. But communicating with a submarine (潜艇) or a diver is not so easy. The lack of practical methods for sharing data between underwater and airborne devices has long been a frustration for scientists. The difficulty stems from the fact that radio signals work perfectly in air travel but poorly in water. Sonar(声呐)signals used by underwater sensors reflect off the surface of the water rather than reaching the air. Now, researchers at MIT have developed a method with the potential to revolutionize underwater communication. "What we've shown is that it's actually feasible to communicate from underwater to the air," says Fadel Adib, a professor at MJT's Media Lab, who led the research. The MIT researchers designed a system that uses an underwater machine to send sonar signals to the surface, making vibrations (振动)corresponding to the Is and Os of the data. A surface receiver then reads and decodes these tiny vibrations. The researchers call the system TARF. It has any number of potential real-world uses, Adib says. It could be used to find downed planes underwater by reading signals from sonar devices in a plane' s black box and it could allow submarines to communicate with the surface.Right now the technology is low-resolution. The initial study was conducted in the MIT swimming pool at maximum depths of around 11 or 12 feet. The next steps for the researchers are to see if TARF is workable at much greater depths and under varying conditions-high waves, storms, schools of fish. They also want to see if they can make the technology work in the other direction- air to water. If the technology proves successful in real-world conditions, expect "texting while diving" to be the latest underwater fashion.8.What does the author mainly talk about in Paragraph 1?A.The future of video chat underwater and in air.B.The difficulty of communication from water to air.C.The frustrations of developing underwater devices.D.The current situation of communicating with a submarine.9.What does the underlined word "feasible" mean?A.Changeable. B.Convenient. C.Achievable. D.Alternative. 10.What do we know about TARF?A.It is widely used to find downed planes.B.It can work well at great depths underwater.C.It is an underwater machine that sends signals.D.It can send, receive and read signals from underwater.11.What is the best title for the text?A.The Real-world Uses of Sonar Technology.B.A Breakthrough in the Application of Video Chat.C.Full Water-to-air Communication Closer to Reality.D.TARF Becoming a New Means of Communication.DFemale scientists with PhDs earn substantially less than their male counterpart (职位相当的人). A survey tracked more than 55,700 people who earned PhDs between 2024 and 2024. Overall, about 35% of all PhD recipients reported having a permanent job lined up at graduation, among which men reported an average annual salary of $95,000. Women reported a salary of $72,500, a gap of $22,500. In a similar survey in 2024, the overall gender(性别) gap in salaries was $18,000.Men were over-represented in relatively high-paying fields such as computer science and engineering, but inequality continued to exist even within fields. Men with permanent jobs in the life sciences, for example, reported an expected median salary of $87,000, compared with $80,000 for women. In mathematics and computer science, men reported an expected median salary of $125,000; for women, that figure was $101,500.Salaries and career paths can vary greatly from one scientific discipline to another, says Michael Roach, an economist at Cornell University. Roach is looking closely into differences in career outcomes for US PhD holders. Roach says it’s clear that women, on average, earn less than men even when all other factors are taken into account. In industrial research and development, there are differences that can’t be explained by ability or degree or the status of a university. The root causes of those differences remain unclear, Roach says. One possibility is that men are more willing to negotiate for higher salaries. Roach notes that some women might have to make sacrifices to start families, but it would be a mistake to blame all income gaps on lifestyle decisions. “A lot of men want to spend mor e time with their families too,” he says. The report shows that a PhD improves overall career and salary prospects, but the actual value clearly depends on the field of study, the demands of the marketplace and, for reasons that still aren’t clear, the per son holding the degree.
