SouthLuoguLaneis786meterslongand8meterswide,connectingGulouEastS t.onitsnorthanddi’anmenEastSt.onthesouth.SouthLuoguLanewasbuiltin1267whenYuandadu wasconstructed,andwasacomponentofthemarketareainYuandadu’surbanlayout,whichhadtheimperialgovernmentbuiltinthefront,themarketar eaattheback,theimperialancestraltempleontheleft,andthesacrificialaltaront heright.ThelanewaspartofthezhaoHuicommunityintheYuandynasty,andser vedasthedividinglinebetweenthezhaoHuicommunityandtheJingGongcom munityinthemingdynasty.itwasunderthejurisdictionoftheXiangHuangBann erduringtheyearsofEmperorQianlong,andbelongedtotheLeftiiicommunityi nthelateyearsofEmperorGuangxuandduringtheyearsofEmperorXuantong. duringthe
Republicofchinayears,itbelongedtotheinnerVcommunity.TheLanewascall ed“LuoguoLane”inthemingdynastyduetoits“Luoguo”featurewiththemiddl eparthigherthanthetwoends.in1750,thelanegotahomonymicnameof
“LuoguLane”,andwasdividedintoSouthL uoguLaneandnorthernLuoguLan e(nowwithintheandingmencommunity).Thenameofthelaneremained“Sout hLuoguLane”duringandaftertheyearsoftheRepublicofchina.Thehutongwas brieflycalled“HuihuangSt.”duringtheculturalRevolutionandlaterregainedit scurrentname. SouthLuoguLanewasbuiltunderthearchitectural
conceptof“residentialblocks”–withthelaneservingasthecentrallinedividing 8parallelhutongsoneachside,henceformingtheoutlookofafishbone,ora“wug ong”.Thus,thelanewasalsocalled“wugongLane”.SouthLuoguLaneistheonl yremainingtraditionalresidentialareainchinathatstillfullypreservesthechess -boardstylelayoutofhutongs
typicallyfoundintheY uandynasty,withitsscale,qualityandhistoricalvalueun matchedbyanyotherlanes.
SouthLuoguLanewasamongthefirst25areaslistedforhistoricalpreservationb ytheBeijingmunicipalGovernmentinnovember1990.currently,withintheSo uthLuoguLanearea,onesitehasbeenlistedfornationallevelpreservation,11sit esformunicipallevelpreservation,and9sitesfordistrictlevelpreservation.wit hitsimpressivehistoricalandcultural
