Somaliland is one of the poorest African regions.
Its __rural_ __population__ is struggling to make a living in the best of times, but __ _drought__ makes it __impossible__.
"I am 80. In the 80 years of my life, I've never seen such __severe__ __drought__.
It has killed so many animals and caused so much __famine_.
Our lives are in danger."
The situation is similar in the _neighboring_ Puntland region and parts of Ethiopia. The United Nations last month called for _urgent_ aid to save _1.7_ million people in the _affected_ parts of Somalia.
"Communities are losing their means for _survival_, and we need to stop this loss of li ves and
forced _displacement_ as people have no other _option_ than to move in search of foo d, water and income."
But when there is no food and water for _miles_ _and_
_miles_ around, moving may be _futile_.
Some Ethiopian farmers have crossed the _border_ to try to _escape_ __famine_. "The _drought_ has been __raging_ for three years in Ethiopia.
We were told that there were pastures on the other side of the _border_.
But when we got here, we found nothing."
Ethiopia, Africa's second most _populous_ country, is in the grip of its worst _drought _ in _decades_.
The government is _appealing_ for aid to help 10 million _affected_ people.
The food shortage is also _grave_ in Malawi, which has not yet _recovered_ from last year's record flooding.
"Before the floods, my child was doing well.
But after we lost our _crops_, my child got sick and became _malnourished_.(32) That is what made me come to this hospital for _treatment_ and food."
Malawi's president has declared a state of national _disaster_.
But the food crisis in parts of Africa could get worse yet.
“The _peak_ of the crisis is still to come.
So, I think we will see the _situation_ getting worse before it will get better.
We talk about maybe a small _improvement_ around mid-2016 or shortly after this." Experts say people in the _affected_ areas depend on aid to _survive_ and are calling f or an urgent step-up of humanitarian _efforts_.
