They mean that the home is very important and personal. Most people in Britain live in houses rather than flats, and many people own their homes. This means that they can make them personal, and change them in any way they like. Most houses have a garden, even if it is a small one, and the garden is usually loved. The house and the garden are the private spaceof a person. In a crowded city a person knows that he or she has a private space which is only for himself or herself and for invited friends.People usually like to mark their space. If you are on the beach you may have spread your towels around you; in the rain you may have put your coat or small bag on the seat beside you; in a library you may spread your books around you.Once I was traveling on a train to London. I was on a section for four people and there was a table between us. The man opposite to me had his briefcase on the table. There was no space on my side of the table at all. I was unhappy. I thought he thought that he owned the whole table. I had been reading a book about nonverbal (非语言的) communication so I took various papers out of my bag and put them on his case! When I did this he suddenly became angry and his eyes nearly popped out (突出)of his head. I had taken up his space! A few minutes later I took my papers off in order to read them. He immediately moved his case to his side of the table.6. What does the first sentence in Paragraph 1 mean?a. Englishmen usually live in homes instead of castles.b. [本题1分](C) effort41.The increase in international business and in foreign investment has created a need for executives with knowledge of foreign languages and skills in cross-cultural communication. Americans, however, have not been well trained in either area and, consequently, have not enjoyed the same level of success in negotiation in an international arena as have their foreign counterparts.Negotiating is the process of communicating back and forth for the purpose of reaching an agreement. It involves persuasion and compromise, but in order to participa te in either one, the negotiators must understand the ways in which people are persuaded and how compromise is reached within the culture of the negotiation. In many international business negotiations abroad, Americans are perceived as wealthy and impersonal. It oftenappears to the foreign negotiator that the American represents a large multi-million-dollar corporation that can afford to pay the price without bargaining further. The American negotiator’s role becomes that of an impersonal supplier of information and cash.In studies of American negotiators abroad, several traits have been identified that may serve to confirm this stereotypical perception, while undermining the negotiator’s position. Two traits in particular that cause cross-cultural misunderstanding are directness and impatience on the part of the American negotiator. Furthermore, American negotiators often insist on realizing short-term goals. Foreign negotiators, on the other hand, may value the relationship established betw een negotiators and may be willing to invest time in it for long-term benefits. In order to solidify the relationship, they may opt for indirect interactions without regard for the time involved in getting to know the other negotiator.Clearly, perceptions and differences in values affect the outcomes of negotiations and the success of negotiators. In an effort to quash some myths, here are the four most common stereotypes regarding college education in the United States.Myth 1: American students are not as academically driven in comparison to other nations. There are more than 3,000 universities in the United States. Some are highly selective, some not at all. The less selective colleges may consist of students who have little concern for their academic well-being, but in the more selective colleges you will find very committed students who will spend countless hours at night on their homework. This is a phrase in the United States called an ―all nighter‖ which is used when a student stays up all night to perfect an assignment. In truth, it is an issue of prid e. Myth 2: American students party all night and day. While American students do enjoy the freedom to explore a full lifestyle, they are also expected to keep up with very high standards of social behavior and academic excellence. Internation al students often join clubs or organizations where they can become involved in exciting programs both on and off campus.Myth 3: American students are all rich and can afford a college education.Although a certain percentage of American college students do come from wealthy families and have large expendable incomes, most American college students come from moderate-income families. Most American students enter college knowing they must apply for loans, work part-time, and earn scholarships in order to meet their financial obligations.Myth 4: Most Americans (and college students) live in large cities which are crime-ridden with drugs and drive-by shootings.Of all industrialized nations, the United States has one of the lowest crime rates. College campuses are no exception. Safety is of primary importance to all students, parents, and staff at universities.Universities centered in major cities have endless services to ensure the safety of all students, from campus transportation services to on-campus police officers. Most of universities located outside of the city are very safe, and various precautions are made based on their demographic situation.(1) According to the passage, the word ―myth‖ means _______. These figur es would not surprise most people. But many would be surprised to learn that twenty million Am ericans ride motorcycles. Few people realize that motorcycling is fast becoming one of America’s most popular sports. Many kinds of people enjoy motorcycling. The average American motorcyclist is between the ages of twenty-one and thirty-five. He owns his own house, and has a wife, more than one child, and at least one car. He is a responsible citizen.Cycle Magazine, a monthly publication with almost 280,000 readers, claims that about fifty-five per cent of American motorcyclists are businessmen, with three per cent in the professions and nine per cent in government service. Such information is offered by motorcyclists in the hope of i mproving the general p ublic’s impression of their sport. The public has tended to believe that all motorcycles are ridden by wild, irresponsible, lawless young man. There are several things about motorcycling that the average citizen dislikes. Motorcyclists oft en look dirty; in fact, they are dirty. On the road there is little to protect them from mud, crushe d insects, and bird droppings. For practical reasons they often dress in old clothing which looks much less respectable than the clothing of people who ride in cars.Probably the machine itself also produces anger and fear.Motorcycles are noisy, though som e big trucks are even noisier. But trucks are big and carry heavy loads; they are accepted beca use they perform a needed service, making America move. Motorcycles, on the other hand, make an unpleasant noise just to give their riders pleasure. That is what is commonly thought.Of course the danger of motorcycling also helps account for many people’s low opinion of th e sport. Its defenders, however, claim that careful cyclists are in less danger than is commonly b elieved. As motorcycling becomes more common in years to come, it will be interesting to see how p eople in general feel about the sport. Perhaps it will someday become as ―respectable‖ as tennis or golf.(1) Motorcyclists . [本题2分](C) hope to improve the general public’s impression of their sport(2) The average citizen dislikes motorcycling not because . [本题2分(B) they perform a needed service(5) Which of the following ideas is suggested in the passage? [本题2分](D) Motorcycling becomes more common in the future.44.Schools in the U.S. generally do not have a specific teachingplan for teachers to follow, and they certainly don’t have a set of textbooks that are taught by all school districts throughout the country. That’s why textbooks vary greatly from school to school, and from teacher to teacher e ven though they are all teaching the same subject in the same grade. Some schools provide bo oks to use, but teachers do not strictly follow them. They only use them as a reference, and enj oy pointing out mistakes and wrong information given in the books. They often share their own p oints of view with their students. Teaching like this has many advantages. Teachers can bring ou t their expertise, fully elaborating their most familiar areas. Students are more interested in what t hey are studying. Also this flexible teaching style benefits students in the development of critical t hinking skills and the ability to apply them. On the other hand teaching like this also has many drawbacks. It causes uneven study levels. It is even more so among different schools and distric ts. Students in the same grade do not usually have a thorough understandi ng of a subject taught in the same school year. The teacher for the following year would have to spend a lot of time f inding out what the students already know or do not know in the subject before starting his/her own teaching plan. Some parts may be repeated, resulting in waste of time; and other parts may not be covered at all.Exams in American schools are much less rigid than those in China. Teaching is flexible, so are exams. Even if you memorized the whole textbook, it might not be of much help in the exa ms. My Chinese friend envied me for not having to worry about the competition for attending the best schools by taking endless exams.1) What are advantages of the flexible teaching style? [本题2分](D) Both A and B.(2) The flexible teaching style ______. [本题2分](A) may cause troubles to the teacher for the following year.3) The word ―drawbacks‖ (paragraph 2) means______. Most rubbish is made up of things we can't eat or use. If we kept these things, we would soon have amountain of rubbish. In some cities the rubbish is collected and taken outside the city to a dump. Often the city dump is placed where the ground is low or there is a big hole. The kitchen rubbish is broken into small pieces and sent into the sewage(污水,排水)system. The sewage system takes away the used water from toilets, bathtubs and other places. To keep mice and flies away, some earth is used to cover the newly dumped rubbish. Later, grass may be planted on the rubbish-filled land. Finally, a house or a school may be built there, and then you'd never know that this had once been an old rubbish dump.In other cities the rubbish is burnt in special places. The fire burns everything except the metal.Sometimes the metal can be used again in factories where things are made of metal. The food parts of rubbish are put in special piles where they slowly change into something called humus(腐殖质), which looks like black earth. It is rich with the kinds of things that feed plants and help make them grow.(1)、You can most probably read this kind of passage in a telephone book.A:TB:FB(2)、The main idea of the passage is to tell people to take useful things out of rubbish.A:TB:FB(3)、The underlined word "sewage" in the second paragraph means laundry.A:TB:FB(4)、According to the passage, the food parts of rubbish can be used again to feed plants.A:TB:FA(5)、We should take care of a used metal box by reusing and recycling it.A:TB:FA2、After having lived for over twenty years in the same district, Albert Hall was forced to move to a new neighborhood. He surprised his landlord by telling him that he was leaving because he could notafford to buy any more chocolate. It all began a year ago when Albert returned home one evening and found a large dog in front of his gate. He was very fond of animals and as he happened to have a small piece of chocolate in his pocket, he gave it to the dog. The next day, the dog was there again. It held up its paws and received another piece of chocolate as a reward. Albert called his new friend "Bingo". He never found out the dog's real name, nor who his owner was. However, Bingo appeared regularly every afternoon and it was quite clear that he preferred chocolate to bones. He soon grew dissatisfied with small pieces of chocolate and demanded a large bar a day. If at any time Albert neglected his duty, Bingo got very angry and refused to let him open the gate. Albert was now at Bingo's mercy and had to bribe him to get into his own house! He spent such a large part of his weekly wages to keep Bingo supplied with that in the end he had to move somewhere else.(6)、Albert lived there for many years.A:TB:FB(7)、Albert was moving because he did not like the place.A:TB:FB(8)、Albert and the dog became friends a year ago.A:TB:FA(9)、The dog visited Albert every day because it wanted the chocolate.A:TB:FA(10)、Albert "had to bribe him" means he had to take care of him.A:TB:FB3、Shyness is the cause of much unhappiness for a great many people. Shy people are anxious and self-conscious; that is, they are excessively concerned with their own appearance and actions. Worrisome thoughts are constantly occurring in their minds: what kind of impression am I making?Do they like me? Do I sound stupid? Am I wearing unattractive clothes? It is obvious that such uncomfortable feelings must negatively affect people. A person's conception of himself or herself is reflected in the way he or she behaves, and the way a person behaves affects other people's reactions. In general, the way people think about themselves has a profound effect on all areas of their lives.Shy people, having low self-esteem, are likely to be passive and easily influenced by others. They need reassurance that they are doing "the right thing." Shy people are very sensitive to criticism; they feel it confirms their feelings of inferiority. They also find it difficult to be pleased by compliment with a statement like this one, "You're just saying that to make me feel good. I know it's not true." It is clear that while self-awareness is a healthy quality, overdoing it is harmful. Can shyness be completely eliminated, or at least reduced? Fortunately, people can overcome shyness with determined and patient efforts in building self-confidence. Since shyness goes hand in hand with a lack of self-esteem, it is important for people to accept their weaknesses as well as their strengths. Each one of us is a unique, worthwhile individual, interested in our own personal ways. The better we understand ourselves, the easier it becomes to live up to our full potential. Let's not allow shyness to block our chances for a rich and fulfilling life.(11)、What does the author try to prove by citing "what kind of impression am I making?" (Para.1)_____B_____A:Shy people benefit from their caring about their appearance.B:People's shyness made them care too much about their appearance and actions.C:It's natural that shy people don't believe other's compliments.D:Shy people think they are different from others.(12)、According to the writer, self-awareness is ____A______.A:a good qualityB:the cause of unhappinessC:harmful to peopleD:a weak point of shy people(13)、That shy people react to a compliment in such a way is ______B____.A:goodB:unrealC:very reasonableD:harmful(14)、Which of the following statements is true, according to the passage? ___C___ A:Shyness helps us to develop our potentialB:Shyness enables us to understand ourselves betterC:Shyness can block our chances for a rich lifeD:Shyness has nothing to do with lack of self-esteem(15)、It can be inferred from the passage that shy people __B__.A:should find more of their weaknessB:should understand themselves in the right wayC:had better ignore their weaknessD:can get rid of their shyness while maintaining low self-esteem三、词汇与语法1、__C_____ these honours he received a sum of money.A:ExceptB:ButC:BesidesD:Outside2、A police officer claimed he had attempted to ___A_ paying his fare.A:avoidB:rejectC:refuseD:neglect3、How can he _____ if he is not _____? 一.阅读:
A young man who lived in London was in love with a beautiful girl. Soon she became his fiancée (未婚妻). The man was very poor while the girl was rich. The young man wanted to make her a present on her birthday. He wanted to buy something beautiful for her, but he had no idea how to do it, as he had very little money. The next morning he went to a shop. There were many fine things there: gold watches, diamond… but all these things were too expensive. There was one thing he could not take his eyes off. It was a beautiful vase. That was a suitable present for his fiancée. He had been looking at the vase for half an hour when the manager of the shop noticed him. The young man looked so pale, sad and unhappy that the manager asked what had happened to him.
The young man told him everything. The manager felt sorry for him and decided to help him. A bright idea struck him. The manager pointed to the corner of the shop. To his great surprise the young man saw a vase broken into many pieces. The manager said: "When the servant enters the room, he will drop it."
On the birthday of his fiancée the young man was very excited. Everything happened as had been planned. The servant brought in the vase, and as he entered the room, he dropped it. There was horror on everybody's face. When the box was opened, the guests saw that each piece was packed separately.
