Many Americans are learning to climb in city gyms. Here, people are learning on special climbing walls. The climbing wall goes straight up and has small holding places for hands and feet.

How do people climb the wall? To climb, you need special shoes and a harness (保护带) around your chest to hold you. There are ropes tied to your harness. There are small pieces of metal that stick out for you to stand on and hold on to. Sometimes it' s easy to see the new piece of metal. Sometimes, it's not. The most difficult part is to control your fear. It's normal for humans to be afraid of falling, so it's difficult not to feel scared. But when you move away from the wall, the harness and the ropes hold you, and you begin to feel safe. You move slowly until you reach the top.

We have also formed a special support group to help young people stop smoking. We are particularly proud of the most recent group we have created. They couldn’t go outside and the children’s visits brought some into their lives.

Many young people like me have very little contact with elderly people .As a result , we have a lot of wrong ideas about them . We have little or no idea of the kind of lives they lead in the homes . after this visit , my friends and I decided we should do something to help improve the quality of their lives .

Each year, many Chinese people go abroad because of all kinds of reasons. They are

becoming younger and younger by year.Even some Chinese parents send their chikdren to foreign countries when they are only in a middle school. They think their children can get a wider view, less academicx(学业) competition or family honor. But life can be bad for young people there.(79) At first, they have to face the culture differences and language problems. However, these are not

always the most difficult things to overcome. To best children, controlling(管理) themselves well is a big challenge when studying alone in a strange country.Yu Yang, a 15-year-old student from Guangdong Province studies in a high school in Toronto, Canada. To his surprise, his teachers there seldom push students to study abroad. And usually there isn’t too much homework.Students have lots of free time to do the activities. Some of his friends spend their whole year’s money in the first two months of the new term.So they have to ask their parents for some more money.

On the one hand, studying abroad can help students learn foreign languages quickly and

open up their eyes, (80)but on the other hand, some children may feel lonely, become bad, lose themselves, etc.Mnay problems may happen to them. These are different from their original thoughts. So parents should think them over before their children go abroad.

What will the home of the future look like? A team of architects(建筑师)in Hong Kong say that city homes will be tiny, as populations continue to grow and space becomes more expensive.

They have designed “spaceflats” that are just 30 square meters in size. These flats have small rooms: a living room, a bathroom and a bedroom, as well as a balcony(阳台), but everything is carefully planned to make good use of the limited(有限的)space.

The living room is the main room of the flat. It can be used as an office, a kitchen even a second bedroom. There is a sofa that can be changed into a bed. The dining table can be changed into a computer desk. And, if not needed, both the sofa-bed and the table can be folded away and stored into a small space in the wall. There is a flat-screen TV, which can also serve as a computer monitor. In one of the room, a small cooker, a microwave oven and a miniature(微型)refrigerator are hidden out of sight.

The other rooms are small but practical(实用). The bathroom contains a toilet and a shower. The double bed in the bedroom can also be a sofa, if necessary. The balcony has enough room for two people to sit and enjoy the view from the block of flats. All the rooms have high ceiling to provide as much storage space as possible, while the flat has large windows to let in plenty of sunlight.

“Spaceflats” are now being tested in a building in Hong Kong. “It’s wonderful,” said one resident(居民). “The flat is so well designed that you feel that here is plenty of space.”

Sudden shaking of the ground makes an earthquake. It is caused by a sudden rock movement underground. Earthquakes usually happen in long narrow belts, where different large plates of rock meet.

In spite of much research and wonderful equipment, it is impossible to predict an earthquake accurately(准确地), although experts can estimate roughly(大概推测)an earthquake coming in a particular region. So everyone needs to learn a bit about how to keep oneself safe in an earthquake. As you may know, the greatest danger of an earthquake comes from falling buildings and structures and flying glass, stones and other objects. Please read on for some tips about how to stay safe in an earthquake:

●If you are indoors, find a secure location to wait out the quake, such as under a heavy table or desk. Doorways are among the safest places to stand because you can brace(支撑)yourself between two walls. However, watch out for swinging doors. Stay away from windows.

●If you are outdoors, try to get into an open area, away from falling buildings, power lines, trees, etc.

●If you are in a crowded public area, crouch down(蹲下), with your hands protecting your head and neck.

●If you are in your car, pull over to the side, away from power lines and overpasses, and stay inside the car until the shaking stops.

Some countries have large numbers of earthquakes. Japan is one of them. One of the most serious earthquakes in world history took place in Japan in 1923. The shock and fires caused by it destroyed much of Tokyo and Yokohama and left more than 7000 dead. Other countries do not have many. For examples, there are few earthquakes in Britain, France, Germany.

There is often a great noise during an earthquake, but it is not always. The earth rocks. Houses fall down. Railway lines are broken. Sometimes many people are killed in an earthquake. People think earthquakes often happen near volcanoes(火山), but this is not always true. The centers of some are under the sea. The bottom of the sea suddenly moves. The powerful forces inside the earth break the rocks. The coast is rocking and great waves are caused there. These waves travel long distances and rush over the land when they reach it. They are strong enough to break down houses and other buildings; sometimes they break more buildings than earthquake itself.

What kind of building stands up best in an earthquake? A building with concrete(水泥) walls is perhaps the best. A steel frame(框架) will make it even stronger. The frame holds the different parts together and the walls do not easily fall. There is less chance of fire because concrete and steel(钢材) does not burn. This kind of building is the safest. Today modern concrete and steel apartment buildings are commonly seen in cities of Japan.

76. Why do we say that an earthquake is terrible?

_____________________________________________________________________.

77. What kind of building is the safest for us to live in against earthquakes?

_____________________________________________________________________.

78. Which country has the largest number of earthquakes, Britain, Japan, or France?

79. 判断正误:正确的在括号里写T,错误写F。

What’s your idea of a perfect mom? In America, moms of the 1950s and 60s in the TV plays were the “perfect” examples. They always made freshly cooked meals and had a tidy house. It was their full-time job to care for the children and the home. It meant that the home was the real centre of mothers’ lives. But that was 40-50 years ago. Times have changed, and so have the roles of moms.

In the U.S., in 1960s, society began to change. The women’s liberation movement (妇女解放运动) caused women to question their traditional and solid roles. And women began leaving their homes to get jobs or go back to school. Society changed in Asia, too. Fifty years later, it becomes normal

for mothers to work outside the home without the exception (例外). This is true in both America and Asia.

Mothers today serve as presidents, CEOs, university teachers and airline pilots. In fact, they can be found in every profession (职业). But most people will tell you, their most important job is still being a mom.
