Listening Text (P23)
Two college students are chatting. Tina wants Sara to go to a disco with her, but Sara is nervous about going.
Part 1
T: I’m going to Belle’s Karaoke Bar and Disco tonight with some friends. Why don’t you come too?
S: Oh. I’m sorry, I can’t.
T: Oh, come on. You never go out anywhere.
S: To tell you the truth, I’m too nervous.
T: What are you nervous about?
S: Well, suppose someone offers me drugs?
T: Just say “no”. You don’t have to do a nything you don’t want to. S: Maybe t hey’ll think I’m stupid.
T: Nonsense. Lots of people don’t take drugs. Who cares what they think anyway?
S: You know I’ve never drunk alcohol either.
T: Well, i t’s OK to drink orange juice or something instead.
S: Yeah, but I’d really like to try beer, only I’m frightened I might get drunk.
T: Then only have one beer and drink it slowly. And it would be a good idea to have something to eat before you go out, like rice or
noodles.
S: Thanks.
Part 2
T: Any more worries?
S: Another thing that worries me is that I might start smoking again. I used to smoke and it was really hard to stop.
T: Yes, I know what you mean. I found the same. So we need to help each other. If someone offers you a cigarette, don’t take it. And I’ll remind you not to smoke and you can remind me.
S: T hat’s a good idea, thanks.
T: Is there anything else you’re worried about?
S: Umm, just one more thing.
T: What?
S: I can’t dance.
T: (laughing) Well, I’ll teach you. Let’s get my CD player and start practicing now. It’s not difficult…(fades)

A Visit To The Doctor
(D=Doctor L=Li Yue)
D: Hello, Li Yue. What can I do for you today?
L: Well, I’ve been getting a lot of headaches lately.
D: Mmm?
L: And I feel tired all the time. The problem i s that I’ve got so much work to do, but my headaches and I keep wanting to go to sleep.
D: I see. Are you sleeping well?
L: No, not really.
D: Mmmm. Now let’s see. You’re preparing the College Entrance Exams, aren’t you?
L: Yes, that’s right. I’ve got so much to do but I can’t do it when I’m feeling so ill.
D: Well, don’t get upset. We’ll sort it out.
L: I hope so.
D: OK. Well, I have to do some tests to rule out anything physical, but I really think the problem is stress.
L: Stress?
D: Yes. How much time do you study each day?
L: I don’t know. As much as I can.
D: And how much time do you take to relax?
L: None at all. I don’t have relaxing time.
D: I know it’s difficult. I remember when I was studying for exams, study seemed more important than anything else. But you will actually do better in your exams if you balance study with some relaxation.
