One couple in Sweden decided to take that logic a few steps further, and are refusing to tell anyone whether their child is a boy or a girl. The child – called Pop, to protect his or her identity – is now two years old, and only a few close relatives know the sex. “We want Pop to grow up more freely,” Pop’s mother said. Pop wears dresses, and also “male” styled pants and Pop’s hairstyle changes often. Nordenstrom, who studies hormonal (荷尔蒙) influences on gender, says, “It will affect the child, but it’s hard to say if it will hurt the development. I don’t know what they are trying to achieve. It’s going to make the child different.” She says if Pop is still “genderless(无性的)” by the time he or she starts school, Pop will c ertainly receive a lot of attention from classmates. “We don’t know exactly what determines sexual identity, but it’s not only sexual education,” says Nordenstrom. “Gender-typical behavior, sexual preferences and sexual identity usually go together. There are hormonal and other influences that we don’t know that will determine the gender of the child.” Pop will soon welcome a brother, or a sister. Pop’s parents will not reveal the sex of that child, either, except, perhaps, to Pop.C1. What did the couple in Sweden do to their child?A. They taught their child to take a few steps further.B. They didn't want anyone to know the sex of their baby before it was born.C. They are refusing to tell the sex of their child.D. They refused to let their relatives get close to their child.D2. The name makes it hard for others to tell the sex of the baby.A3. What can we learn from what Nordenstrom said?A. It's hard to tell whether the influence on the child will be good or bad.B. The child will become abnormal (反常的).C. The child is neither a boy nor a girl because it is "genderless."D. Hormonal influence will determine the gender of the child.D4. Foreign travel can be very educational for anyone if he is interested enough to make preparations beforehand. Learning the language of the new country would be difficult for the traveler, 1 the benefits of such an effort would become obvious immediately on his arrival. It may not seem important to him when he comfortably stays at home, but knowing how to 2 a meal or book a room is necessary for the newcomer in a strange country. Without knowing the language, it is very difficult 3 the stranger to understand the people of the new country and their customs.Of course,in our small world it is often possible to find someone 4 understands our own, but this is only second–best for the traveler. To be sure, he can see places and things without the use of a language, but places and things are not the heart of any country. To get the greatest benefit from a trip 5 another country, it is how important for the visitor to have an understanding of the language.B1.A. to B. but C. order D. for E. whoC2.A. to B. but C. order D. for E. whoD3.A. to B. but C. order D. for E. whoE4.A. to B. but C. order D. for E. whoA5.A. to B. but C. order D. for E. who正确答案:1-B, 2-C, 3-D, 4-E, 5-A22.【Unit Four (2)】Many people who work in London prefer to live outside it, and to go in to their offices or schools everyday by train, car or bus, even though this means they have to get up early in the morning and reach home late in the evening. One advantage of living outside London is that houses are cheaper. Even a small flat in London without a garden costs quite a lot to rent. With the same money, one can get a little house in the country with a garden of one’s own. Then, in the country one can really get away from the noise and hurry of busy working lives. Even though one has to get up earlier and spend more time in trains or buses, one can sleep better at night and during weekends and on summer evenings, one can enjoy the fresh, clean air of the country. If one likes gardens, one can spend one’s free time digging, planting, watering and doing the hundred and one other jobs which are needed in a garden. Then, when the flowers and vegetables come up, one has got the reward together with those who have shared the secret of Nature. Some people, however, take no interest in country things: for them, happiness lies in the town, with its cinemas and theatres, beautiful shops and busy streets, dance-halls and restaurants. Such people would feel that their life was not worth living if they had to live it outside London. An occa sional walk in one of the parks and a fortnight’s (two weeks) visit to the sea every summer is all the country they want: the rest they are quite prepared to leave to those who are glad to get away from London every night.B1. Which of the following statements is NOT true? ___________A. People who love Nature prefer to live outside the city.B. People who work in London prefer to live in the country.C. Some people enjoying city life prefer to work and live inside London.D. Many nature lovers, though working in London, prefer to live outside the city.C2. With the same money __________, one can buy a little house with a garden in the country.A. getting a small flat with a gardenB. having a small flat with a gardenC. renting a small flat without a gardenD. buying a small flat without a garden B3. When the garden is in blossom, it means that one ___________ if they had to live outside London.A. living in the countryB. having spend time working in the gardenC. having a garden of his ownD. having been digging, planting and wateringA4. People who think happiness lies in the town would feel that __________ if they had to live outside London.A. their life was meaninglessB. their life was invaluableC. they didn't deserve a happy lifeD. they were not worthy of their happy lifeC5. The underlined phrase get away from in the 3rd paragraph refers to_________.A. deal withB. do away withC. escape fromD. prevent from正确答案:1-B, 2-C, 3-B, 4-A, 5-C阅读理解23.【Unit Four (2)】 Language is always changing. In a society where life continues year after year with few changes, the languages do not change either. The earliest known languages had difficult grammar but a small, limited vocabulary. Over the century, the grammar changed, and the vocabulary grew. For example, the English and Spanish people who came to America during the sixteenth century gave names to all the new plants and animals they found. In this way, hundreds of new words were introduced into English and Spanish vocabularies. Today life is changing very fast, and language is changing fast too. There are several major language families in the world. Some scientists say there are nine main families, but other scientists divided them differently. The languages in each family are connected, and scientists think that they came from the same parent language. About 3% of the people in the world speak languages that are not in these major families.B1. The early language had many words and easy grammar.A. TB. FA2. In the next few hundred years we can expect language to change a great deal.A. TB. FA3. This article shows that language changes with changes in society.A. TB. FB4. Between 1946 and 1960, 63 million babies were born in the United States, up 22 million from the fifteen-year period before that. this big jump in the birth rate came to be known as the baby boom (婴儿潮). Before the war, American children were raised very strictly. They were often told to be "seen and not heard." After the war, however, young parents raised their children according to different ideas. Dr. Benjamin Spock's Common Sense Book of Baby and Child Care, published in 1946, emphasized flexibility (灵活性) in raising children. Spock encouraged parents to listen to their children and respond to their wishes. New parents quickly made Dr. Spock's book the best-selling book in US history. By 1952, sales had reached 4 million copies per year for the next eighteen years. Critics (批评家) who believed that the old ways of raising children were best accused Spock of being too permissive. They thought his ideas would spoil children. But Spock opposed strict discipline because he thought there were was "no such thing as a bad boy." 第二部分:阅读理解1Before you go to another country it is a great help if you know the language and some of the customs of the country. When people meet each other for the first time in Britain, they say ―How do you do?‖ and shake han ds. Usually they do not shake hands when they just meet or say goodbye. But they shake hands after they haven’t met for a long time or when they will be away from each other for a long time.Last year a group of German students went to England for a holiday. Their teacher told them that the English people hardly shake hands. So when they met their English friends at the station, they kept their hands behind their backs, the English students had learned that the Germans shake hands as often as possible, so they put their hands in front and got ready to shake hands with them. If you telephone him early in the day, while he is shaving or having breakfast, the time of the call shows that the matter is very important and requires immediate attention. The same meaning is attached(附予) to telephone calls made after 11:00 pm. If someone receives a call during sleeping hours, he assumes it’s a matter of life or death. The time chosen for the call communicates its importance. In social life, time plays a very important part. In the U. S. A. guests tend to feel they are not highly regarded if the invitation to a dinner party is extended only three or four days before the party date. But it is not true in all countries. In other areas of the world, it may be considered foolish to make an appointment too far in advance because plans which are made for a date more than a week away tend to be forgotten. The meaning of time differs in different parts of the world. Thus, misunderstandings arise between people from different cultures that treat time differently. Promptness is valued highly in American life, for example. If people are not prompt, they may be regarded as impolite or not fully responsible. In the U.S. no one would think of keeping a business associate(伙伴)waiting for an hour, it would be too impolite. A person who is 5 minutes late, will say a few words of explanation, though perhaps he will not complete the sentence.6. What is the main idea of this ?B. Many people think of Chamberlain as a giant. He is so tall that he has a special, extra-long bed to sleep in and a special car with enough space for his long legs. During his playing days, Wilt was paid about $200 000 a year. That was what the president of the United States earned for being president. At that time, it was more than any other athlete in the entire history of sports had ever been paid.Wilt played for the Los Angeles Lakers team. Wilt owns a beautiful apartment building in Los Angeles and another one in New York. He owns racehorses (赛马). He wears fine clothes. He owns an English Bentley car. When Wilt was just seven years old, he took a job. He did not tell his mother or father, but one day his mother found out. F4There are three kinds of goals: short-term, medium-range and long-term goals.Short-term goals are those that usually deal with current activities, which we can apply on a daily basis. Such goals can be achieved in a week or less, or two weeks, or possibly, months. It should be remembered that just as a building is no stronger than its foundation. Long-term goals cannot amount to very much without the achievement of solid short-term goals. Upon completing our short-term goals, we should date the occasion and then add new short-term goals that will build on those that have been completed. The intermediate goals build on the foundation of the short-term goals. They might deal with just one term of school or the entire school year, or they could even extend for several years. Any time you move a step at a time, you should never allow yourself to become discouraged or overwhelmed. As you complete each step, you will enforce the belief in yourability to grow and succeed. And as your list of completion dates grow, your motivation and desire will increase.Long-term goals may be related to our dreams of the future. They might cover five years or more. Life is not a static (静止的) thing. We should never allow a long-term goal to limit us or our course of action.19. What is the main idea of this ?C. Different kinds of goals in life.20. She gave the money to a children’s hospital.Gladys Holm never got married or had any children. But she always liked children, and she wanted to help them. F6Britain and France are separated by the English Channel, a body of water that can be crossed in as few as 20 minutes. But the cultures of the two countries sometimes seem to be miles apart.Last Thursday Britain and France celebrated the l00th anniversary (周年纪念) of the signing of a friendship agreement called the Entente Cordiality. The agreement marked a new beginning for the countries following centuries of wars and love-hate partnership. But their relationship has been ups and downs over the past century. Just last year, there were fierce disagreements over the Iraq war—which British Prime Minister Tony Blair supported despite French President Jacques Chirac speaking out against it. This discomfort is expressed in Blair and Chirac’s body language at international meetings. While the French leader often greets German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder with a hug (拥抱), Blair just receives a handshake. However, some political experts say the war in Iraq could in fact have helped ties. The history of divisions may well be because of the very different ways in which the two sides see the world. But this doesn’t stop 12 million Britons taking holidays in France each year. However, only 3 million French come in the opposite direction. Surveys (调查) show that most French people feel closer to the Germans than they do to the British. And the research carried out in Britain has found that only a third of the population believes the French can be trusted. Perhaps this bad feeling comes because the British dislike France’s close relationship with Germany, or because the French are no t happy with Britain’s close links with the US.Whatever the answer is, as both sides celebrate 100 years of ―doubtful friendship‖, they are at 1east able to make jokes about each other. Here’s one: What’s the best thing about Britain’s relationship with France? The English Channel.26. For centuries, the relationship between Britain and France is .D. a mixture of love and hate27. They had planned either to live in a furnished apartment or to buy used furniture. But they soon learned about a new system that more and more people are using. The renting of home furnishings (bed, tables, dishes, and so on) has become one of America’s fastest growing businesses. What kinds of people rent their home furnishings instead of buying them? People who are international business or government officials, foreign students, airline workers, young married couples—people whose job or business may force them to move frequently from one city to another. They save a lot of trouble and the cost of moving their furniture each time. They simply rent new furniture when they reach their new homes. Young people with little money do not want to buy cheap furniture that they may soon dislike. They prefer to wait until they have enough money to buy furniture they really like. Meanwhile, they find they can rent better quality furniture than they could afford to buy.One family, who now have a large, beautiful home of their own, liked their rented furniture so much that they decided to keep renting it instead of buying new things. But u sually people don’t like to tell others about it. The idea of renting home furnishings is still quite new, and they are not sure what their neighbors might think.11. One of my favorite stories is about a dog that wanted his owner to please him.One of my friends has a large German shepherd named Jack. These dogs are often very intelligent. Every Sunday afternoon, my friend takes Jack for a walk in the park. Jack likes these long walks very much. One Sunday afternoon, a young man came to visit my friend. He stayed a long time, and he talked and talked. So it was time for my friend to take Jack for his walk, but the visitor didn’t leave. Jack became very worried about his walk in the park. He walked around the room several times and then sat down directly in front of the visitor and looked at him. But the visitor paid no atten tion. He continued talking. Finally, Jack couldn’t stand it any longer. He went out the room and came back a few minutes later. He sat down again in front of the visitor, but this time he held the man’s hat in his mouth.German shepherds aren’t the only in telligent dogs. Another intelligent dog is a Seeing Eye dog. This is a special dog, which helps blind people walk along the streets and do many other things. We call these dogs Seeing Eye dogs because they are the ―eyes‖ of the blind people and they help them to ―see‖. Seeing Eye dogs generally go to special schools for several years to learn to help blind people.6. Like many other dogs, Jack tried to please its owner master.A. TB. F7. They are men and women recognized for shaping our nation’s consciousness and development as well as the lives of those who admire them. Yet, some people say that ours is an age where true heroes and heroines are hard to come by, where the very idea of heroism is something beyond us – an artifact of the past. Some maintain that because the Cold War is over and because America is at peace, our age is essentially an unheroic one. Furthermore, the overall crime rate is down, poverty has been eased by a strong and growing economy, and advances continue to be made in medical science.Cultural icons are hard to define, but we know them when we see them. They are people who manage to go beyond celebrity (明星), who are legendary, who somehow manage to become mythic. But what makes some figures icons and others mere celebrities? That’s hard to answer. People have several dreams each night. Dreams are like short films. They are usually in colour. Some dreams are like old films. They come to us over and over again. That may be because the dreamer is worrying about something. Dreaming may be a way of trying to find an answer. Some people get new ideas about their work from dreams. They may have been thinking about their work all day. These thoughts can carry over into dreams.Sometimes we wake up with a good feeling from a dream. But often we can’t remember the dream. Dreams can disappear quickly from memory.Too much dreaming can be harmful. The more we sleep, the longer we dream. The mind is hard at work when we dream. That is why we may have a long sleep and still wake up tired.6. It may be less important to sleep than to dream.A. TB. F7. Dreams and films are usually very long.A. TB. F8. A van hold seven persons easily, so a family of three children could ask their grandparents to go on a holiday travel. But Spock opposed strict discipline because he thought there were was "no such thing as a bad boy."
