(一) I. Classify the following sentences into four types. Choose A for simple sentence, B for compound sentence, C for complex sentence, and D for
compound-complex sentence.
1. My hair and my muscles are deteriorating and disappearing.
2. My arms are sore, and my feet are swollen when the day is over.
3. The shelf has three layers, two of which are devoted to books on various subjects.
4. Louis disliked walking home from the bus stop because the street had no overhead lights, and it was lined with abandoned buildings.
5. Energy is part of youth, but both are quickly spent.
6. The wood itself gives off a faint sweet smell, and its original color resists decoration.
7. They all stand in perfect order like two rows of soldiers marching through dark night toward dawn, or say, like two platoons of guards of ceremony waiting for the inspection of some VIP.
8. English is offered only in the morning while chemistry can be taken at night.
9. Since the house had been burglarized, Smith couldn't sleep soundly for several months.
10. The expedition was led by Colonel Walter H. Wood of New York, and spent several weeks at its camp on Seward Glacier.
11. People often say wise things like age is a state of mind.
12. We must plan our family budget carefully, for the price of food has risen recently.
13. After Jack dialed the police emergency number and received a busy signal, he dropped the phone and ran, so he didn't have time to call back.

16. The children started arguing, so I made them turn off the TV.

II. Decide which is the topic sentence in each paragraph and put the number of the sentence in the blanks on the answer sheet.
1. (1) Hurricanes, which are also called cyclones, exert tremendous power. (2) These violent storms are often a hundred miles in diameter, and their winds can reach velocities of seventy-five miles per hour or more. (3) Furthermore, the strong winds and heavy rainfall that accompany them can completely destroy a small town in a couple of hours. (4) The energy that is released by a hurricane in one day exceeds the total energy consumed by humankind throughout the world in one year.
2. (1) The sky is clear blue. (2) Sparrows chirp in the early mornings. (3) The fruit trees in the backyard are beginning to bloom. (4) The hills are turning green, and purple and yellow wildflowers are appearing in the fields. (5) The snow on top of Camel Mountain has all melted. (6) It must finally be spring.
3. (1) Many TV commercials imply that a woman's self-esteem depends on her cleaning ability. (2) In one commercial, we see a woman terribly upset because her guests find spots on her glassware. (3) Countless other commercials blur out the message that a woman will pass muster as a person if her kitchen floor gleams and her toilet bowl is blue. (4) This idiocy must work, because the images of women scrubbing, mopping, waxing and smiling keep on coming over the air.
4. (1) Californians and New Englanders are both American. (2) They speak the same language and abide by the same federal laws. (3) But they are very different in their ways of life. (4) Mobility—both physical and psychological—has made a great impression on the culture of Californians; lack of mobility is the mark of the customs and morality of New Englanders.
III. Composition-writing.
It’s said that a well-read man is also a man who thinks well, who has a background of opinion and a stand for judgment. Write an essay of about 150 words on the topic “My View on Reading”. You are to write in three parts. In the first part, make comments on the statement. In the second part, support your viewpoint with examples
