AThe least-visited countries in the worldIt’s every traveler’s dream — a corner of the planet still undisturbed by tourists. And obviously, such places do exist. The United Nations World Tourism Organization lately reported the four least-visited countries globally.Montserrat (9,000)Once a popular holiday spot, this Lesser Antilles island has never quite recovered from a series of natural disasters. Hurricane Hugo in 1989 hit 90 per cent of the island and in 1995 the Soufriere Hills volcano erupted. These days, its volcano is now actually one of Montserra t’s main attractions, along with its beautiful beaches. Visitors can also go diving in its clear waters.Comoros (24,000)This collection of islands in the Indian Ocean near Madagascar serves as the perfect destination for those who want to get away from everyday city life.Comoros offers beautiful volcanic scenery, fruitful forests, and remote sleepy towns. There are even some of the best undiscovered reefs (礁) just waiting to be explored by divers. Liechtenstein (69,000)The sixth smallest country in the world is also one of themost undiscovered.Lying between Austria and Switzerland, Liechtenstein is an outdoor enthusiast’s playground. It’s the only country in the world to be totally in the Alps and a summer destination for hiking and cycling and snow-covered skiing perfection in winter, for those who can afford it.French Guiana (199,000)French Guiana is the least-visited country in South America, with some of the world’s most diverse plant and animal life. While there is much to attract tourists to the area, not least its miles of jungle, the infrastructure (基础设施) is in need of some attention.21. When I was six years old, I took a traditional Irish step dance class.I fell in love and stuck with it for the next seven years. During that time my father also became more involved in the Irish music world, so he would play, and I would dance. My ethnic heritage (族裔归属) is German and Irish, but because I was surrounded by traditional Irish music and dance in my home, I have grown to be more interested in and connected to my Irish heritage. When I started interning (实习) for the Folklife Festival, I became interested in traditional Basque music and dance and I learned that their experience with dance is very similar to my own. There are so far over 170 Basque organizations in 24 countries, with a greater population of Basques outside of the Basque country than in it. The separation they experience from their homeland is both physical and psychological, so being part of a group with the same interests is an important social support system. These organizations contribute to the continuation of Basque culture, language, and community, and encourage future generations to learn about their ethnic heritage. One of the ways they achieve this is through dance. While learning and performing Basque dances, they connect to their heritage, experience a part of their homeland, preserve Basque culture, and create connections and friendships that last a lifetime.Californian Valerie Arrechea began teaching alongside her father at the age of thirteen and on her own at sixteen. For her, dance is her preferred expression of heritage; it provides a way to be proud of her Basque heritage. The dance performances of North American Basque organizations have developed the interest of non-Basque Americans as well. Janet Iribarne from the Basque Dancers explained that their organization is open to anyone, and afterseeing her group perform, several of her non-Basque friends have developed their own love of Basque traditions as well.24. What is the reason for the author’s preference for Irish dance?A. Her dance teacher.B. Her love of Irish music.C. Her interning experience.D. Her family’s strong root in dance.25. What do we know about Basque people?A. Most of them live abroad.B. Their culture is being lost.C. They live in poor conditions.D. Their population is increasing.26. What is the purpose of Basque organizations?A. To help Basques in need.B. To preserve Basque culture.C. To provide medical treatment for Basques.D. To support overseas Basque children for education.27. What’s non-Basque Americans’ attitude towards Basque danc e?A. They show no interest in it.B. They find it difficult to learn.C. They are enthusiastic about it.D. They are concerned about its future.CYou know that Grandparents Day, taking place the Sunday after Labor Day every year, is a holiday for celebra ting your parents’ parents. But how did the holiday come to be? Did it originate out of a sweet, sincere wish at heart ... or was it all a giant marketing plan to sell more goods? It is, in fact, the former. When Marian McQuade first thought of the idea for the holiday, commercialism (商业主义) was the last thing on her mind. In 1956, McQuade was trying to plan a celebration for the elderly members of her community. She made the sad discovery that many of the senior citizens in the nursing home didn’t often rec eive visits from their families. So she set a day to appreciate grandparents. In any case, McQuade never wanted the holiday to be a money grab. Mother’s Day actually has a similar story; in fact, its founder wanted it discontinued in the 1920s after she saw how commercialized it had become. However, it didn’t s top card companies from getting excited about the future of a new holiday. Hallmark predicted that, by 1983, Grandparents Day would become the sixth highest card-selling holiday. But to their disappointment, it never became a commercial holiday. Many families have much more meaningful ways of celebrating the holiday. Danielle Kirsch celebrates by trying a new activity every year with her grandmother Elsie. “This year, we’ll be painting together,” she t ells /doc/25c32404e0bd960590c69ec3d5bbfd 0a7956d509.html . Molly Arnold’s grandmother is no longer around, yet she still finds a way to honor the holiday. Arnold is the Chief Operations Officer of the Frank and Barbara Broyles Foundation, a charity she created in memory of her grandmother, B arbara Broyles, who passed away from Alzheimer’s disease (老年痴呆症).However, just because the holiday is not about commercialism doesn’t mean you can’t exchange gifts. /doc/25c32404e0bd960590c69ec3d5bbfd 0a7956d509.html actually suggests that grandparents give theirgrandchildren gifts, especially gifts that “honor family traditions”. For example, a meaningful gift from a grandpa to his granddaughter would be actually a birthday gift, but we think it’s a perfect Grandparents Day idea too.28. Why did McQuade found Grandparents Day?A. To grow her own business.B. To realize her parents’ dream.C. To remember her own grandparents.D. To call on people to care for the elderly.29. What does the underlined part “a money grab” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?A. A way to make big money.B. A celebration of on e’s wealth.C. A chance to give others money.D. A deal between family members.30. Hallmark thought Grandparents Day _____.A. wouldn’t grow popular among young peopleB. would become a commercial holidayC. would turn into a global holidayD. wouldn’t l ast long31. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?A. Meaningful ways of celebrating the holiday.B. People’s attitudes toward the holiday.C. The effort to carry out the holiday.D. The future of the holiday.DScientists may have evidence that our personality plays into our eating habits. People who are open and extroverted (外向的) eat more fruits and vegetables than others, according to new research. The new report, published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology, analyzed the eating habits of more than 1,000 young adults ages 17 to 25. Researchers gave participants a test to measure for the “Big Five” personalities: openness to experience, conscientiousness (尽责性), extroversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism (神经质). Then they asked some participants to keep a food diary for 21 days and others for 13 days, in hopes of encouraging more people to complete the task.Participants who scored higher than average for openness ate about 4.5 more servings of combined fruits and vegetables per week than those less open ones. They also consumed less unhealthy food, such as potato chips or fries. Extroversion also had a positive effect on fruits and vegetable consumption, though not as strongly as openness did, while conscientiousness was a weak predictor of produce consumption.Of course, the study only found an association between the characteristic and eating habits, rather than a direct causation. It’s likely that people who are open to new experiences take those same attitudes toward food, study author Tamlin Conner, a professor at the University of Otago, told The Huffington Post. Their personality may make them more eager to try new fruits and vegetables. But it’s also possible that eating healthy foods can cause anyone to feel more like anextrovert: Another of Conner’s studies found that in the short term, eating more fruits and vegetables resulted in more feelings of motivation, which she says are key characteristics of extroversion. So, you want to eat better? Start eating like an open, extroverted person. “Try to t ake an attitude of openness, especially toward unusual healthy foods,” Conner said. “Go tothe store, and pick something new. Practice behaving like an open person.”32. What does the new research focus on?A. Food and health.B. Personality and health.C. Eating habits and health.D. Eating habits and personality.33. What do we know about the experiment?A. It asked participants to share their food diaries.B. It was carried out among old people.C. It involved five personalities.D. It lasted for a month.34. Which of the following would lead you to eat more fruits and vegetables?A. Openness to experience.B. Extroversion.C. Conscientiousness.D. Agreeableness.35. What does Conner suggest?A. Consulting an extrovert about foods.B. Making friends with open people.C. Going on a balanced diet.D. Trying new healthy foods.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

APoetry, one of the essential art forms of literature(文学),is a brief and easy way to express our feelings. Moreover, everyone understands it in their own way. Some find relief in poems; some read them simply for peace; some read poems for simple artistic pleasure. There are some special features of poetry, which make it quite different from other forms of literature. First of all, poems have rhythmic patterns. Generally most parts of a poem follow the same form of rhythm. Poems may have rhyme, but they don't have to. The lines are neatly arranged together so that they express a particular feeling or emotion. There can be various types of poems but according to the pattern or the form, there are mainly three types:匕丫1记5(抒情诗):The lyric mainly concentrates on human thoughts and emotions rather than a story. Lyrics always bear song-like appeal. These are mainly short poems. Popular lyric poem forms are the elegy, the ode and the sonnet. William Shakespeare, Edmund Waller and Keats are some of the greatest lyric writers of all times.Narrative poems(叙事诗):This type of poetry tells a story. Narrative poems are usually long poems. Epics(史诗)and ballads fall under this type. Some of the greatest epic poets are John Milton, Dante, Edgar Allan Poe, Alexander Pope, William Shakespeare, etc.Dramatic poems(戏剧诗):Any drama that is written in verse is a dramatic poem. These poems generally tell a story. Black verse, dramatic monologue(独白)and closet drama belong to this type. William Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe and Ben Jonson are some of the greatest dramatic poets.Whatever the form is, one thing, which cannot be denied, is that poetry is one of the most powerful tools to express our feelings.1.What do we know about lyrics?①They are similar to songs.②They usually tell stories.③They are not very long.④The sonnet is a type of lyrics.A.①②③B.②③④C.①②④D.①③④2.We can know from the text that.A.poems are weak in showing feelingsB.some poets write more than one type of poem 普宁一中2019-2020学年度高二第二学期第一次月考英语试题1C.narrative poems are shorter than lyric poemsD.the sonnet and the ballad belong to the same type3.This passage is written mainly to .A.tell us some simple facts about poetryB.teach us how to write poemsC.give some advice on reading poemsD.make us interested in poems【语篇解读】这是一篇说明文。

For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word; for the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank. Here are a few of common phrases and the stories behind them.Saved by the bell: This means to be saved from a difficult situation at the last moment. In England in the late 1600s, a guardsman was accused of being asleep on duty. He denied that he (21) (sleep) because he had been awake to hear the clock of St Paul’s Cathedral (22) (strike) 13 at midnight. This was his proof that he (23) not have slept. The judge laughed at the idea that the bells of St Paul’s Cathedral could be heard so far away and sentenced him to death. It was later verified, however, (24) the clock did strike 13 instead of 12 times on that night. (25) (save) by the bell, the guardsman was released from prison and lived to the age of 102.Top dog and underdog: Before the days of electric sawmills, all timber (26)be cut by hand. Two men used a saw to cut the timber. One man stood in the pit and got covered in sawdust as it fell down from the wood (27) (cut). He became known as the “underdog”. The (28) (fortunate) man, who stood above the pit at ground level, was called the “top dog”.Buy a pig in a poke: it means to buy something (29) having a close look at it before. In old times, a pig was frequently put on display for buyers to look at. When someone decided to buy the pig, the seller offered them (30) pig tied in a sack (known as a poke). When customers went back home and opened the sack, they sometimes found that the pig was not as good as the one on display.Section BDirections: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. It is a timeless, classic and evergreen city which is known for some of the most famous buildings, museums and galleries in the world.” she writes, “and the weather is pleasant even though the rain clouds hover over (33)and it pours frequently. But it is not (34) my spirit a bit.”Her schedule for the two days is packed with visits to museums and parks, (35) the vintage side of the otherwise modern city. She is taking a walk in St James’s Park, enjoying the (36)flower display and smelling the roses along the way she messages me. “You would fall in love immediately with the rich spread of rainbow-hued flowers. They say the English are(37), but I am warmed by their smiles while walking and travelling with them in the tube or by the roadside.”At the end of the day, Megan plans to treat herself to a typical English afternoon tea, which is a platter of sandwiches and English pastries and cakes served in an elegant cake (38) and a pot of tea.On day two, she is to visit the Tate Britain which holds (39) from modern and contemporary artists. She will be catching a ferry down the river to Shakespeare’s Gl obe, a replica of an original Elizabethan theatre, which shows Shakespeare plays in the open air. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.Today, there are many avenues open to those who wish to continue their education. However, nearly all require some (41) in one’s career in order to attend school full time. Part- time education, that is, attending school at night or for one weekend a month, tends to drag the (42) out over time and puts the completion of a degree program out of reach of many people. (43) , such programs require a fixed time commitment which can also impact (44) on one’s career and family time.Of the many (45) to teaching and learning, however, perhaps the most flexible and accommodating is that called distance learning. Distance learning is an educational method, which allows the students the (46) to study at his or her own pace to achieve the (47) goals, which are so necessary in today’s world. The time required to study may be set aside at the student’s convenience with due (48) to all life’s other requirements. Besides, the student may enroll in distance learning courses from (49) any place in the world, while continuing to pursue their chosen career. Tutorial assistance may be (50) through regular airmail, telephone, fax machine, teleconferencing and over the Internet.Good distance learning programs are characterized by the inclusion of a subject (51) tool with every subject. This precludes (排除) the requirement for a student to travel away from home to take a test. Another characteristic of a good distance-learning program is the (52)of the distance-learning course with the same subject materials as those students taking the course on the home campus. The resultant diploma or degree should also be the same whether distance learning or on-campus study is employed. In the final analysis, a good distance learning program has a place not only for the (53)students but also the corporation or business that wants to work in partnership with their employees for the educational benefit, professional development, and business growth of the organization. (54) distance learning programs for their employees gives the business the advantage of (55) career-minded people while contributing to their personal and professional growth through education.41. There was a bridge across the river and carts, trucks, and men, women and children were crossing it. But the old man sat there without moving. He was too tired to go any farther. It was my business to cross the bridge, explore the bridgehead beyond and find out to what point the enemy had advanced. I did this and returned over the bridge. The old man was still there.“Where do you come from?” I asked him.“From San Carlos,” he said, and smiled. “I was taking care of animals.”“Oh,” I said, not quite understanding.“Yes,” he said, “I stayed, you see, taking care of animals. I was the last one to leave the town of San Carlos.”“What animals were they?” I asked.“Various animals. There were two goats and a cat and then there were four pairs of pigeons.” he said, and shook his head. “I had to lea ve them. The captain told me to go because of the artillery (火炮).”“And you have no family?”“No,” he said, “only the animals I stated. The cat, of course, will be all right. A cat can look out for itself, but I cannot think what will become of the other s.”“This is not a good place to stop,” I said. “If you can make it, there are trucks up the road whereit heads for Tortosa.”“I will wait a while,” he said, “and then I will go.”He looked at me very blankly and tiredly, then said, having to share his worry with someone, “The cat will be all right, I am sure. But the others. It’s better not to think about the others.”“If you are rested I would go,” I urged. “Get up and try to walk now.”“Thank you,” he said and got to his feet, swayed from side to side and then sat down backwards in the dust.“I was taking care of animals,” he said dully, but no longer to me. “I was only taking care of animals.”There was nothing to do about him. It was Easter Sunday and the Fascists were advancing toward the Ebro. The fact that cats know how to look after themselves was all the good luck that old man would ever have.56.What is the narrator’s job?A.He takes care of animals in his hometown.B.He protects the people who cross the bridge.C.He scouts ahead for the enemy's location.D.He questions people before they cross the bridge.57.What are some inferences you can make about the old man?A.He's angry; he's confused; he's out of control.B.He's exhausted; he's given up; he's emotionless.C.He comes from a rich home; he's missing home; he's lost.D.He's aware of what's going on, but has little intention of leaving.58.What is the theme of the story?A.Wars disrupt the lives of innocent people.B.Growing old makes you tired.C.Animals are hard to find in war time.D.Soldiers have tough jobs in San Carlos.(B)The Development of MuseumsThe conviction that historical relics provide infallible testimony about the past is rooted in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when science was regarded as objective and value free. Such conviction was, until recently, reflected in museum displays. Museums used to look - and some still do - much like storage rooms of objects packed together in showcases: good for scholars who wanted to study the subtle differences in design, but not for the ordinary visitor, to whom it all looked alike. Similarly, the information accompanying the objects often made little sense to normal visitors.Recently, however, attitudes towards history and the way it should be presented have altered. The key word in heritage display is now 'experience', the more exciting the better and, if possible, involving all the senses. Good examples of this approach in the UK are the Jorvik Centre in York; the National Museum of Photography, Film and Television in Bradford; and the Imperial War Museum in London. In the US the trend emerged much earlier: Williamsburg has been a prototypefor many heritage developments in other parts of the world. No one can predict where the process will end. On so-called heritage sites computers provide virtual reality experiences, which will present visitors with a vivid image of the period of their choice, in which they themselves can act as if part of the historical environment. Such developments have been criticised as an intolerable vulgarization (通俗化), but the success of many similar locations suggests that the majority of the public does not share this opinion. It could be claimed that in order to make everything in heritage more 'real', historical accuracy must be increasingly altered. For example, in the Museum of Natural History in Washington, Neanderthal ( 尼安德特人的) man is shown making a dominant gesture to his wife. Such presentation tells us more about contemporary perceptions of the world than about our ancestors. There is one compensation, however, for the professionals who make these interpretations: if they did not provide the interpretation, visitors would do it for themselves, based on their own ideas, misconceptions and prejudices. And no matter how exciting the result, it would contain a lot more bias than the presentations provided by experts.Human bias is inevitable, but another source of bias in the representation of history has to do with the transitory nature of the materials themselves. The simple fact is that not everything from history survives the historical process. Castles, palaces and cathedrals have a longer lifespan than the dwellings of ordinary people. In a town like Leyden in Holland, several families lived together in circumstances beyond our imagination. Yet in museums, showrooms give only an image of the lifestyle of the upper class of that era. No wonder that people who stroll around exhibitions are filled with nostalgia: the evidence in museums indicates that life was so much better in the past.pared with today’s museums, those of the past .A.did not present history in a detailed way.B.were more clearly organized.C.were not primarily intended for the public.D.preserved items with greater care.60.According to the writer, current trends in the heritage industry .A.emphasize personal involvementB.rely on computer images.C.reflect minority tastes.D.have their origins in York and London.61.In Paragraph 3, the writer suggests that some museum exhibits .A.fail to match visitor expectations.B.are based on the false assumptions of professionals.C.reveal more about present beliefs than about the past.D.allow visitors to make more use of their imagination.62.The passage ends by noting that our view of history is biased because .A.we fail to use our imagination.B.we tend to ignore things that displease us.C.only very durable objects remain from the past.D.museum exhibits focus too much on the local area.Section CDirections: Complete the following passage by using the sentences in the box. Each sentence can only be used once. Note that there are two sentences more than you need.Despite the fact that American companies have been “global” for a very long time now, many people today inside companies still misunderstand cultural differences. They misperceive foreign- born workers, for example, as too "shy" or not “confident" enough. 63 In many cultures, it is just not appropriate to make small talk with someone you don't know, especially someone above you in the corporate level. 64 For example, if you express your loyalty to a particular team without knowing that of your colleagues, you might put them in the uncomfortable position of having to either conceal their own preference or express something that conflicts with yours. So, you can imagine how challenging it can be for someone from a non-small talk culture to try to fit into a US corporate setting. In addition, the US is basically a“straight-shooter ( 坦率的人)”style culture, where it is culturally valued to tell it like it is. But this isn't necessarily true worldwide. For example, in Japan, people prefer to communicate indirectly, especially when it comes to a sensitive topic. To avoid accidentally damaging a relationship, people approach problems through subtle hints or general statements. If someone were to directly state a problem, it would make them look ungraceful, immature, and untrustworthy. 65Americans tend to be relatively informal in a business context. 66 Many cultures are quite formal, especially when interacting with superiors. In general, Indian culture, for example, is very formal. Indians typically greet their elders and superiors by title (Sir, Mr., Dr., Professor) and never by their first name. This is also the case at the university, where students act with extreme levels of respect towards their professors. The above discussion just hits the tip of the iceberg of the different cultural misinterpretations in corporate America. For American employers to succeed in selecting, training, inspiring and keeping their top foreign-born talent, it is high time that they started taking account of these cultural differences in their leadership selection process.第II 卷(共23 分)I.Summary WritingDirections: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.School uniformsSchool uniforms are becoming more and more popular across the U.S. A. That's no surprise, because they offer many benefits. They immediately end the powerful social sorting and labeling that come from clothing. If all students are dressed in the same way, they will not pay too much attention to their clothing, and some of them will not be laughed at for wearing the “wrong” clothes. Some people are against the strict rule of school uniforms, but they do not realize that students already accept a kind of rule—wanting to look just like their friends. The difference is that the clothing students choose for themselves creates social barriers; school uniforms tear those barriers down.As in other places, uniforms remind the wearers of their purposes and duties. For example, when a man or woman puts on a police uniform, he or she becomes, for a time, the symbol of law and order. The uniform means to the wearer his or her special duties and sends the same message to everyone the wearer meets. People with different jobs wear uniforms of one kind or another. For students, the school uniform reminds them that their task for the six or seven hours they are in school is to get an education. Some parents are unhappy about uniforms, saying that school uniforms will affect their children's “creativity”. As noted above, the clothes students choose to wear do not necessarily express their individuality. Chances are that they just copy their classmates. While they're in school, their job is to master reading, writing, maths, etc. Mastery of those skills will be good for the students to build up their creativity in every way.II. TranslationDirections: Translate the following sentences into English, using the words given in the brackets.68. 随着时间的流逝,一些广泛使用的谚语正在被淘汰。

Four friends spend their days in an arrow room atop a Left Bank apartment building. The neighbors think they’re painters- a cover story to explain the chemical smell. In fact, the friends are members of a Jewish resistance cell. They’re operating a secret laboratory to make false passports for children and families about to be deported to concentration camps (集中营). The youngest member of the group, the lab’s technical director, is practically a child himself. Adolfo Kaminsky, age 18.In the summer of 1943, he and his family were arrested and sent to Drancy, the internment camp for Jews near Paris that was the last stop before the death camps. This time, their passports saved them. Argentina's government protested the family's detention, so they stayed at Drancy for three months, while thousands of others were swiftly sent on to die. The Kaminskys were eventually freed, but they weren't safe in Paris, where Jews were under constant threat of arrest. To survive they would have to go underground. Kaminsky's father arranged to get false papers from a Jewish resistance group, and sent Kaminsky to pick them up. Whenthe agent told Kaminsky that they were struggling to erase a certain blue ink from the documents, he advised using lactic acid, a trick he'd learned at the dairy. It worked, and he was invited to join the resistance. Kaminsky's cell was one of many. Historians estimated that France's Jewish resistance networks together saved 7,000 to 10,000 children.Kaminsky never took a penny form forging. He thought the money would ruin his belief. He made a living by taking some commercial photos. To this day, 94-year-old Kaminsky feels guilty he survived the Holocaust, in despite of the fact that his remarkable work as a forger during World War II saved the lives of thousands of Jews. It was said that school should not start before February 17th. The exact start time of school will depend on situations and further notices. However, many parents are very worried that putting off the start of school may affect children’s studies. It they have such a long winter vacation, children will not learn any knowledge, read books or study at all. They may forget what they have learnt before. Staying at home for a long time will make them keep eating, sleeping and playing, which seriously affect their physical and mental health. In short, the close of school influences learning and develops bad habits, so how should we avoid these problems? Local education departments have also issued a notice, that is, to organize online teaching and create a network platform, where necessary courses will be shown every day, and online teaching will be given by excellent teachers of the subject, and students can learn at home through computer or mobile network. It should be said that such a method is very good. It can not only keep students indoors and not worry about the infection of the disease, but also make them study at home, improve their learning ability, and truly achieve “no suspension of classes”. Both the platform itself and the recorded lesson resources are more useful, and are welcomed by parents and teachers.Of course, except for learning at home, it is also necessary to teach children about health knowledge, especially how to keep away from touching virus; at the same time, it is also necessary for children to do some physical exercises or some games, which is good for physical health at home.8.Parents worried about putting off the start time of school because .A.children may be infected by virusB.they don’t like the idea of online learningC.children’s study may be affectedD.parents have no time to look after children9.Except for learning at home, what is also necessary according to the writer?A.To keep playing online games.B.To keep touching different people.C.To do some physical exercise outside.D.To teach children about health knowledge.10.The underlined word “suspension” in Paragraph 4 probably means .A.planB. stopC. growthD. change11.What’s the best title for this passage?A.ASpecial Way to Learn at HomeB.ANew War with a New ChangeC.AWay to Keep Mentally HealthyD.AMethod to Make Parents UnworriedDMoney might not grow on trees, but it seems that furniture does! Gavin Munro, a UK-based designer, has come up with a brilliant alternative to cutting beautiful trees and converting them into furniture. He first came up with the idea of growing furniture when he was working as a gardener in California and also made furniture with washed-up driftwood on the side. After several attempts, he finally managed to develop a model chair using four trees. Munro is now tending to a small 2.5 acre “furniture forest” of 400 trees in a field north of Derby, England. He uses specially designed plastic frames to make young oak and ash trees into the shapes of chairs, tables, frames, or lamps.A forest that grows furniture sounds like a setting right out of Alice in Wonderland, but there’s nothing magical about it, just a lot of hard work. The forest consists of rows upon rows of trees covered in blue plastic molds, converting them into furniture as they grow. Once they take the desired shape, they are cared for until thick, mature and ready for harvest. After harvesting, each piece is planned( 刨平) and finished to show off the wood grain inside. “It’s an art form in itself, keeping track of everything,” Munro said. The entire process takes about four to eight years, resulting in fully functional, organic, eco-friendly furniture, and more long-lasting than anything else on the market. They are grown and grafted(嫁接) into one solid piece without any joints that loosen over time. As Munro puts it, “These pieces of furniture could last for centuries.”Quality isn’t an issue with forest-grown furniture, but maintenance and scalability(可伸缩性) certainly are. For now, Munro expects to grow 50 pieces a year, with the first lot of chairs available for purchase in mid-2017, priced at $3,700 each.12.The first paragraph mainly serves as .A. commentB. praiseC. introductionD. background13.Gavin Munro thought of growing furniture .A. while serving as a gardenerB. while relaxing at homeC. w hile studying in CaliforniaD. when he grow up14.What plays a key role in growing furniture?A. C. They may feel more pressured at work. D. They don’t know how to do basic modern-human-being things.
2. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “crunched” in Paragraph 2?
A. When Amazon Go charges. B. What Amazon Go sells.
C. Where Amazon Go lies. D. How Amazon Go works.
6. The main purpose of the passage is to ________.
A. encourage people to shop online B. advise people to work for Amazon
There’s an obvious reason: These tend to be the ages when people have young children at home, and the researchers did find that this group reported feeling increasingly crunched for time. But adding to that pressure, coworker support also tends to decline at this age. Some researchers interpret the findings:
We offer delicious ready-to-eat breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack options made fresh every day by our on-site chefs and favorite local kitchens and bakeries. Our selection of food stuff ranges from bread and milk to cheeses and locally made chocolates. You' ll find well-known brands we love, plus special finds we're excited to introduce to customers. For a quick home-cooked dinner, pick up one of our chef-designed Amazon Meal Kits, and you can make a meal for two in about 30 minutes.
Sandy Van Dusen likes the idea that clothes are finding new homes instead of being thrown away. “Because it helps to keep the Earth green. There’s no point in my opinion in continuingto buy new clothes when we can reuse what’s already here. Give it a new home--- let somebody else love what you used to love and no longer love.”
But the good news is that after about a decade of struggle, things start to pick back up again. Occupational psychologists say that happiness at work recovers when people reach their 40s, and that people in their 50s are more satisfied with their jobs than any other age group. Hang in there, 30-somethings-soon you will be older, but at least work will meet less frustration(挫折)!
Kim Pratt organized the clothing-swapping event in Springfield. She also organized a money-raising activity for the high school’s debate team. It is one of several ways that her group gives to charitable causes. Another is by donating all of the“un-swapped” clothing to shelters for victims of domestic violence.
A. Make some money by giving away unwanted clothing

It is a popular Internet thing to focus on the upside of being in your 30s, and it is nice to know how to do basic modern-human-being things like paying your taxes and cooking a simple meal. But it can be a less-encouraging story at work: People in their late 20s to early 40s tend to report lower levels of job satisfaction and higher levels of emotional exhaustion than other age groups, according to new research.
