And it can be more exciti ng if there are dolphins swimming around and jumping out of the sea too. For many people,it would be a wonderful dream to swim with these lovely animals! However, this may not be good for dolphins. They may get hurt because of human interaction (互动). Dolphins are active and usually look for food at night. In the day, they like to rest in shallow bays(浅湾). Many people think the dolphins are awake during the day as they swim. But when they sleep they rest half of their brain and keep the other half awake to breathe,so they may be sleeping even when they’re swimming in the water. From 2010 to 2013,spinner dolphins (飞旋海豚) of Hawaii’s Big Island appeared to human activities more than 82 percent of the time, according to Julian Tyne,a researcher at Australia’s Murdoch University. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) says disturbing the animals in their near-shore habitat could force them to swim to less pleasant places where they may be attacked by sharks and other animals. Moreover, when people are around, dolphins become more active. Thus, they can’t get enough sleep. “Disturbing their resting behaviors can actually affect their long term health and the health of the dolphin population.” Ann Garrett of NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Ser vice said.As a result, the NOAA wants to make rules to help protect the dolphins. In Asia, especially in China, Japan, and Korea, it is difficult to go to university. Students must first pass the strict national examination. However, in Canada and the United States, it is easy to go to university, and anyone who wants to go can go. As a result, Asian parents decide to leave their countries so that their children can go to university. The problem is that when Asians arrive, they discover that finding a job and making money are more difficult in the West than in the East. Also, they find that they are very lonely, and that they miss their homes. Because of these two reasons, most Asian parents decide to go back to work while their children study in the West. Therefore, these two reasons, most Asian parents decide to go back to work while their children study in the west. Therefore, these children become satellite kids”, and most of their parents do not know how sad it is to be a “satellite kid”.Only until now are Canadians and Americans discovering the “satellite kids” problem. Because these children do mot speak English and because their parents are not there to take care of them, they are often absent from school. To be a “satellite kid” means growing up in a country where you know you are different and where you cannot make friends because you do not speak English well. Also, it means growing up lonely, because your parents are elsewhere. What these “satellite kids ”will probably say to their parents is that it’s better to have parents around than to have a universit y education.根据材料内容选择最佳答案,并将其标号填入题前括号内。

However, his work had an important, lasting effect on music-lovers, as well as other composers. When ragtime first appeared in the late nineteenth century, it was considered a low form of cheap entertainment, not a serious musical movement. Then in 1899, Joplin wrote a ragtime song called Maple Leaf Rag. The song showed Joplin’s creative mix of African. American rhythm and more accepted European American musical styles. It was a huge success and helped to make ragtime popular with the general public. Maple Leaf Rag was the first instrumental work to sell over one million copies of sheet music (乐谱). It was also the first music by an African American to find a large number of fans among European Americans.Although the general ragtime style already appeared for a long time before Joplin began composing, his work attracted a lot of attention from other ragtime composers of his time. Songs like Maple Leaf Rag influenced these composers mostly because they were very popular with the public. And many of them started to add similar fast and com plicated rhythm to their music. Later, composers came to think highly of the high quality of Joplin’s music, which has continued to capture the imagination of many composers and musicians by now. For example, many later jazz musicians were influenced by Jo plin’s complicated Africanstyle rhythm. Jazz, in turn, went on to influence many more popular music styles. These include the blues, rock and roll, soul, and even hip-hop. As a result, many music historians now list Joplin’s work as an early basis of all modern popular music.1.What can we learn about ragtime?A.It was a mix of music styles.B.It was most popular during Joplin’s time.C.It was not a serious musical movement.D.It helped make ragtime became cheaper.2.What can we infer from the passage?A.Ragtime came from Europe in the late nineteenth century.B.Ragtime was started by Joplin around the beginning of the twentieth century.C.Most of European Americans in Joplin’s time were tired of European American music.D.Most of European Americans in Joplin’s time didn’t listen to music by African Americans.3.The expression “capture the imagination of many composers and musicians” in this passage is the closest in meaning to _________________.A.make many composers and musicians relaxedB.make many composers and musicians stressedC.make many composers and musicians satisfiedD.make many composers and musicians interested4.What is the passage mainly about?A.Scott Joplin’s fast piano playing.B.The types of music Scott Joplin liked.C.Scott Joplin’s short period of success . Then he said to the three hundred students, “Who would like this ¥100 bill?” The students began to p ut up their hands at once. Then he said, “I am going to give this ¥100 to one of you, but first, let me do this.” He then made the bill into a ball. No matter (无论) what I did to the money, you still wanted it because it did not go down in value (价值). It was still worth ¥ l00!”Many times in our lives, we are dropped, crum-pled, and stepped on by the chances we take and the things that happen to us. We feel as if we are worth nothing. But remember, no matter what has happened to you, you will never lose your value: you are always valuable to those people who love you. Your value doesn’t come from what you do or whom you know, but WHO YOU ARE.You are special and valuable. Don’t ever forget it!◆根据以上短文内容,然后从每题所给的四个选项中选择最佳选项。

And they give us happy feelings back. But a recent study shows that it’s different for plants.A study, published in The Plant Journal, shows that plants don’t “like” to be touched. That’s because touching changes their genes (基因) and, even worse, can slow their growth.Professor Jim Whelan of the La Trobe Institute in Australia gave an explanation. “The light est touch from a human, animal, insect, or even plants touching each other in the wind, leads to a huge gene change in the plant,” Science Daily reported. In order to test the theory, the scientists did an experiment on plants. They grew a number of plants to the age of four weeks. Then they touched them with a paintbrush every 12 hours over a 36-hour period. They found that as a response to the touch, the mitochondria (线粒体) in the plants had been partly destroyed. The mitochondria, as Science Alert not ed, are the “powerhouse of the cell (细胞)”. The mitochondria produce energy for therest of the cell in both animals and plants. If this “powerhouse” is weakened, the plants will lose a large amount of energy that should have supported their growth. Whelan further explained to Science Daily, “If the touching is repeated, then plant growth is reduced by up to 30 percent.”Although the process does have a strong effect on plants, usually the plants survive. Touching changes the plants, but it’s not necessarily a bad change.According to Science Alert, frequent touching or moving plants will make them grow shorter than other ones. The researchers believe this change, in some way, could be helpful. It may help plants fight threats to their health such as insects and bad weather. The new research findings have led to a deeper understanding of the plants’ response to touching. And the research might “open up new ways to reduce sensitivity (敏感性) and improve growth in the future”, Science Alert reported. 1.Why did the scientists do the experiment?A.To test if touching can change the genes of plants.B.To show that plants’ and animals’ genes are different.C.To tell when touching has effect on plants and animals.D.To find out why some plants grow more slowly than others.2.What did the scientists find in their experiment?A.Repeated touching shortened the plants’ life by four weeks.B.Touching slowed down plant growth by reducing energy for growth.C.Repeated touching made plants die sooner than they were expected to.D.Mitochondria in the plants couldn’t produce energy because of touching.3.What do the scientists think of the fact that touch makes plants become shorter?A.The plants will be more likely to be attracted by insects.B.The plants will be more easily harmed by bad weather.C.The plants will be less sensitive to being touched.D.The plants will be better at fighting dangers.B14、When you are about to do something brave, a cheerful wish of “Good luck!” from a friend can be helpful. However, as the funny saying goes, “Depend on the rabbit’s foot if you will, but remember it didn’t work for the rabbit!”People in Britain love trees. For most of us, we begin to feel hungry in a few hours after each meal. We can’t imagine starting our day by waking up hungry, going all day without food and going to bed with even greater hunger. The statistics (数据) on hunger in the United States are much surprising to all of us. According to Feeding America, “50,000,000 Americans don’t know where their next meal is coming from. That’s the number in one of the wealthiest nations on the planet. And one in four of these 50,000,000 people are children.”No Kid Hungry surveyed more than 1,000 teachers and principals around the country and found that 73 percent of teachers said they regularly teach hungry students who don’t have enough food to eat at home, and 87 percent of principals said they often see hungry students in school. As a result of so many hungry students, teachers spend nearly $40 a month buying food for kids with their own money. This is the time of the year when children do not have the benefit (好处) of school lunch programs. Here are some ways we can do to help change this situation: First, we can give money to the local food bank. Next, we can donate food in our local area. Third, we can volunteer our time at a local food bank. So, on our next visit to the grocery store, add an extra food idem that can be donated to a food bank.
