Types of Packaging
• The third level of packaging, tertiary packages, comes into use when a number of primary or secondary packages are assembled. This is used to transport products in large numbers.
– e.g. soft drink bottles, sweet wrappers or the inner bag of cereal boxes
Types of Packaging
• Secondary packages , or transport packages, are designed to contain several primary packages. It is used so that goods can be transported more easily, saving energy and costs.
• Resist both internal and external corrosion such as gas, oxygen, water and smells
• Guarantee that the product has not been opened or tampered with
• Keep products fresher for longer • Display detail of the product and information
Tertiary packaging
Types of Packaging
• Primary packages hold the basic product and are brought home from the shop by the end consumer. It performs the dual purpose of protecting the product and advertising the product for the manufacturer.

Packaging logistics
• Packaging logistics covers the design of a product, its package and packing, as well as the adaptation and control of the distribution system and the administrative and information systems associated with the processes throughout the whole chain from raw product, via various processing stages, to the distribution to the end user, and on to recycling and recovery.
• Chemical characteristics
– e.g. commodities that are sensitive to ethylene (mangoes, bananas and broccoli)

• Various properties of goods must be made known to consumers to help them to make the correct buying decision and care for the product properly.
