Body Language

Use a dictionary to find expressions using the following body parts.

1. brain

① have (got) something on the brain (非正式)萦绕于脑际,念念不忘

② beat (one's) brains (out) 【informal】绞尽脑汁,大费脑筋:

③The coach has winning on the brain. (一心想取胜)

④pick (someone's) brain 或pick (someone's) brains

2. head

①head off 拦截:阻挡…的进程或完成;拦截

②bite (或snap) someone's head off 抢白

③head for ④come to a head 发展到危急关头

⑤from head to toe (或foot) 从头到脚,全身

⑥get one's head round (或around) (非正式)想通(不快或不幸之事)

⑦hold up one's head (或hold one's head high) 充满信心

⑧keep one's head above water 勉强度日(尤指在经济拮据时不借债度日)

3. eye

① cast(run) one’s eye over sth. ( look at it or read it quickly) 匆匆查看;浏览

② If sth. catches one’s eye, you suddenly notice it.突然引起…的注意

③clap eyes on sb. or sth. / set or lay eyes on sb. sth. (see ) 看见;瞧见

④make eye contact with / avoid eye contact with sb.与…目光交流/躲避…的目光

⑤cry one’s eyes out =( cry hard) 痛哭

⑥an eye for an eye / a tooth for a tooth: 以眼还眼;以牙还牙;一报还一报

⑦have an eye for sth. (=be good at noticing it or making judgments about it)

⑧make eyes atsb. (=look at sb. in a way which shows that you find them attractive and which is intended to get their attention.). 向…抛媚眼

4. ear

①be all ears (informal)全神贯注地听,洗耳恭听

②grin /smile from ear to ear 咧着嘴笑

③have/ keep an ear to the ground 十分了解事态的进展,保持敏锐

④listen with half an ear 心不在焉地听,似听非听

⑤be out on one's ear (informal)不光彩地被打发走(或被解雇)

5.nose

①poke one's nose into sth. 管…的闲事;窥探

②look down one’s nose at sb. (=look down upon)

③pay through the nose 被勒索;花大钱

You'll have to pay through the nose for those curios. 你买那些古玩得花大钱。

④under someone’s nose (=clearly)

⑤keep one’s nose clean (= behave well and stay out of trouble) 行为规矩;不惹是非

⑥get up one’s nose (= annoy sb.) 使生气;惹…发火

6. tongue

find (或lose) one's tongue 受惊后能(或不能)说话了

get one's tongue round the words. 念(单词)

hold (one's) tongue 保持安静

lose (one's) tongue 失声:失去说话的能力,例如由于震惊

7. hand

hand on 把...传下去

hand out 分发,散发hand over 交出,移交

8. foot
